I've been making up stories since I was five years old, and now I'm thrilled to be able to do it as a full-time job. I have an obsession with dark fantasy, dystopian futures, and Pride and Prejudice-style love stories full of witty banter and sizzling, unspoken feelings. When I'm not writing, I'm creating digital art, reading funny blogs, or watching my favorite shows (which include TVD and BSG). I live with my geeky husband and our two bad cats in Atlanta, GA.
Attention Book Bloggers ~ If you are interested in interviewing me or reviewing one of my books, send me a message. I'd love to hear from you! (Please note: I am currently not able to fulfill most requests for print copies at this time, but you can always ask. However, I am ALWAYS able and happy to provide e-copies or PDFs of my books in exchange for an honest review.)

Still not sure how I feel about Prince Jehn. I’m just not convinced he’s worth the loyalty and service. Granted, this book wasn’t kind to him, but . . . yeah. He just isn’t always the noblest of souls, is he? More than happy to use his friends as his tools.
Continuing to enjoy all the angst keeping Briand and Kael trapped in their slow-burn romance. I love every moment of progression, but I equally love all the drama keeping them apart. It’s just the kind of suspense that keeps me turning pages. (But after all this, they BETTER get their happy ending! I’m just saying!!)
The action is intense, the drama is high, and all the complex pieces of this puzzle are ready to fall together. I’m eager to see Briand grow in her Dragonslayer abilities and hopefully bring this war to an end at last.
I liked this one a little more than the others cause of Kael and Jehn. I enjoyed seeing them together and understanding more of their close friendship. Jehn’s suffering made my heart hurt but it was all pretty satisfying. Kael and Briand along with their drama still continues to rankle me. I’m over it completely. I’m much more interested in Auberon, Jacob and Valora! I’m hoping we have more of them in the next book.
The angst is real, y'all. I am especially glad that that one plot didn't get dragged out, but Damn that ending is mean. I do hope to see more Auberon next book. I want to know what he's up to. He seemed real bad off for a while, there, but then seems to be doing better. What about how he feels for Briand? I want to dislike Jehn, but he doesn't have it easy even though he keeps managing to hurt the people that care for him. And does Jacob actually care about Valora? I can't quite get a handle on that guy. I miss Tibus. Best of all, Kael puts his foot down. About time!
Kate Avery Ellison, who is the author of the Frost series now has a series is called The Kingmaker's War. In the first installment of the Kingmaker's War, A Gift of Poison", our heroine, Briand is an orphan, living with her cruel Uncle, and barely getting by on her own. She is viewed as the castle troublemaker and has earned the nickname "Guttersnipe". Briand's actions get her banned from the castle, on the verge of being sent to the woodlands, when she discovers her cousin is involved with a secret society. Briand uncovers powers she did not know she was capable of and ends up a member of the secret band of rebels. The country is at war. A war between the "true" Prince who is living with his court in exile and the usurper Prince who is ravaging the land leaving in his wake destruction and death. The rebel leader of this secret society, Kael, enlists Briand to aid in their efforts to defeat the evil Prince and his army of evil Seekers.
As the series progresses you learn that Briand takes a stand, refusing to actually join the rebel of forces of the exiled Prince, while continuing to aid them on their missions. She eventually meets the Prince, who we learn is devious and untrustworthy in-spite of the fact that he maintains the unrelenting faithfulness of his followers; a prime example of this unwavering loyalty being Kael. No story is complete without a love triangle.....of sorts or at least I think it wants to be a love triangle. Briand and Kael fall in love. A long the way Briand develops a love hate relationship with a Seeker. A Seeker is an individual with special powers - be they the ability to heal, read other's minds, etc. The Seekers are tools of the Monarchist's cause and work for the evil Prince. The Seeker Auberon and Briand have formed an unwanted connection. At points in the story they become unlikely allies, working together to solve a shared problem, and yet at the end of the alliance each looks for opportunity to betray the other. The reader learns that Auberon has had a troubled past. I am going to just come out and admit I am full-on team Auberon. I think I have a thing for bad boys. Don't get me wrong, I love Kael and all his goodness, but Auberon is a troubled bad boy looking for someone to understand him. If we are being honest Auberon and Briand share a lot of similar life experiences and can relate on a level she cannot with Kael. A couple of times now Ellison has lead me to believe that something special was building between Briand and Auberon but I am really starting to wonder if the romance isn't all in my head. I guess we will see.
Right now there are 6 completed books in the Kingmaker's War with book 7 due out October 29th, 2018. I read the first 4 books in two days. The story drew me in from the first sentence. As a bonus these books are available via Kindle Unlimited.
Books in the series:
A Gift of Poison (Book 1) A Bed of Blades (Book 2) A Kiss of Treason (Book 3) A Circle of Flames (Book 4) A Shield of Sorrow (Book 5) A Court of Lies (Book 6) A Reign of Thieves (Book 7 - Due Out Soon)
Grammar - 3 There are a few minor grammatical issues with these books. It is not overwhelming but a couple of times I found myself re-reading a sentence. Words were missing or in the wrong place. If this is something you find to be problematic then it might be an issue for you but in the grand scheme of things it was not a deal breaker.
Plot - 4.5 I love the story. A young woman who has had to struggle in life to survive. She eventually finds herself and her purpose. Along the way she develops her own identity and her own belief system. Briand learns to read, she becomes educated, she learns to fight, she sees the world, she finds a cause that she supports without getting lost in that cause, and she becomes an individual. She takes the skills she used to survive as a young teen and uses those tools to make her mark on the world.
Believability - 4.5 The story is fantasy. It is a wonderfully made up world with dragons and other imaginary creatures. Ellison has built an environment for these characters and creatures to live in. I believe that sometime or somewhere this world and these people could exist.
Cover - 3.5 The covers are nice but don't have that "wow" factor. As a person who has historically been drawn to a book by it's cover I might not have taken a second look if it wasn't for my already familiarity with the author. I loved Kate Avery Ellison's Frost series and was already onboard for the Kingmakers War regardless of the way the covers looked.
Ending - 4.5 The story has not yet concluded so the ending is really not a factor to consider at this point. Each book is definitely not a stand alone. The story flows effortlessly from book to book and a reader needs to read from the beginning to fully understand the storyline.
Price Value - 4.5 For me they were free with Kindle Unlimited and you can't beat free. If you do not have Kindle Unlimited the price is relatively low and the books are well worth the cost.
Overall - 4.5 I am in love with this series. I downloaded the first book when it came out and forgot it was in my kindle until a couple of weeks ago when I rediscovered it Labor Day weekend. I love all the characters, even the ones I don't think I am supposed to. Sometimes when a series has this many books I find one that I will struggle to complete at least one of the books but each book in this series has been truly engaging.
I highly recommend this series and wait with baited breath for the next installment.
I could not put this series down. I reviewed the first 4 books as one and I was eager with anticipation for book 5. Andddd it did not disappoint. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the characters in these novels that you start to care and love. Not only that, Ellison is just a wonderful storyteller. Her stories are complex and layered and have these twists that you don't see coming.
The storyline picks up where it left off in A Circle of Flames. Briand has gone her own way with Nath and Crispin, and Nath was slowly try to turn her into a legend. While Kael continued to serve his prince dutifully. There was such an emotional heaviness that loomed over the character in A Shield of Sorrow. Both Briand and Kael pined desperately for each other and it was heartbreaking. Both stubbornly hiding how hurt they are. It was has if their bones ached for each other. This entire book they struggle with overcoming, clamping down and forgetting their feelings for each other.
Nath is a character that just keeps growing on me. He played such a wonderful role and I LOVED his banter with Crispin. And his loyalty and love to Briand, whom he hated in the beginning, was endearing.
Jehn is turning out to be such a complex character. I want to find out so badly who he is, what makes him tick, why he does the things he does and what other scheme he has up his sleeve. I also started to pity him. Ellison shows us a side of him that was completely unexpected.
Kael. He is loyal to Jehn to a fault, that it becomes annoying. However, we also see a more human side to Kael. We start to understand why he is as loyal as he is, and I hate to admit it, but it's extremely admirable. His apparent hurt and turmoil turns him into something more real, and he no longer seems like this emotionless blinded character who only follows his prince and feels nothing else. He is growing on me, and this was a side of Kael I needed to see.
Where the heck was Auberon?! I was missing his absence immensely and dying to find out what things were happening between him and Briand. Because if she ends up with anyone, I would hope it's with Auberon. He is the villain who really isn't one and I want more. I don't want a love triangle either, and I have a feeling more than likely he will die in Kael's place while Kael gets to live and end up with Briand. Isn't that how the story always goes? Let's hope not.
UGH! Now I have to wait how many more months for the next book?!?
Okay, book five was just as fast paced and amazing as the last four. Briand, Nath, and Crispin are galavanting in the north, spreading word about the Scarlet Blade, or a made up fairytale with Briand as the savior. Reunited with a beloved friend and dracule, Briand searches for more information about the dragonsayers and the guardians who helped them. But with forces continuing to seek her, her heart broken, and Auberon haunting her dreams, Briand has to fight to survive and ultimately figure out who she wants to be. Kael and Jehn are bound for Nyr as dangers mount to create an alliance. However, an unseen enemy attacks and events spiral out of control, something the clever prince did not foresee. And it could cost the Monarchists everything.
This book was a wild ride that kept me awake most of the night reading until my eyes were too bleary to see. I was confused on how I felt for most of the book, because characters were coming into their own, dangers mounted, and new alliances were being formed, but Kael and Briand's story was just so hard. They wanted each other, but their prince ordered Kael to marry someone else, something he chose to do and subsequently broke Briand's heart. She had spent her whole life feeling unloved and unwanted and for most of this book, she believed Kael just didn't want her. It was heartbreaking. There was action, new flavorful characters, and stunning settings, but their relationship and the cost of loyalty to Jehn underlined it all. Auberon's role in Briand's life is also still being revealed and I have to say that I love his character. The few glimpses we got of him in this book were not enough. I'm excited to see where things go after that cliffhanger because there's no way I'm missing the next installment of Briand and Kael's story.
After having finished reading, I feel so many mixed emotions towards Jehn, especially considering the previous books' ending. On the one hand, he had it rough in this book, but on the other, he sort of showed how much he manipulates people, or at least plays everything and everyone like a strategic game of chess- even Kael and Briand plus his other close "friends".
And on that note, I wonder how much longer Briand and Kael have to endure until they're finally together and happy (I'm guessing maybe until the war is over and Jehn is on the throne) but I can't help but love the angst between them, and I always look forward to the slow burn of their romance. Fingers crossed that there's more progress with Briand and Kael in the next book, especially with the way this book ended.
The stakes are getting higher in the Kingsmaker War, and it feels like the pieces are coming together, but at the same it's getting even more dangerous for everyone. I hope that in the end, a lot of things get a proper resolution, with Briand and the guardians, the Seekers and Auberon and Jane, and Kael and Jehn, and that we get a reunion with Briand, Nath, Kael, and Tibus in the next book! I really hope Briand continues to grow and masters her Dragonsayer abilities.
This is good YA fantasy but i would encourage older YA fans to look elsewhere. This is mostly a review of the series to date.
At this point, Briand is pretty bitter and still stubborn as ever. She has not been my favorite character at all and as of this book hasnt really changed that.
The romance in the story at this point feels stagnant and truly makes the intrigue, action and subterfuge worse. If they are, then do it. If they aren't, then stop the pining.
The secondary characters are, at this point, what in reading for. Their stories are more interesting and, I hope, ecpanded on on in further books.
I really like this series. Although I want to rant and rave about certain things that are happening in the book. Note it would completely ruin the story for you! But I think that is what makes it so good! I really like all the characters and I am completely invested. I just hope it is some what of a happy ending after the freaking bomb shell they dropped on the last page. God I seriously wanted to rip out my hair! I thought the story was great and if you like fantasy books with a lot of drama and forbidden love then this is a book for you! I really liked it.
I think I'm in the minority, but I don't like Kael. So I didn't love hearing from him so much in this book. I wanted more dreams because I actually like Ari. However, that is just my personal feelings and has nothing to do with how well done this book was. Great storyline, conversations, growth, and drama. I'm so anxious to move on to the next book. *This book is a mild PG. There is no swearing, only light, non detailed kissing, and some bloody violence. There is no gore though. *A very brief mention of same sex relationships happens twice in this book. If you can't handle even the mention of it, then don't read this book.
Jehn and his ability to weave things together and see things that others don’t astound me. Even when I know, when I know, that he has a plan, a scheme, afoot I can’t accurately figure out why until it’s revealed. At times, his reasons for how and why aren’t even explained and these drive me mad. Add to his intriguing character and schemes, the other characters with their devotions and quirks, the plot twist and surprising and this turned out to be a book that caused me to stay up way too late each night.
I waited to hope the end was close. Only to see there is another book. I am anxious to read. The changing and peril that will presumably will befall Kael. In so doing, destroy Briand. Also to see if the tattooed Monarchist's prediction will come true. I am so engulfed in these characters lives, I almost feel they are real. This is the author's gift to us.
Entertaining- some good choices in terms of characters
Another entertaining read. I don’t mind the pensive Jehn as much as some others do. It’s a good idea to switch to another character’s love life at this point, so Kael and Briand don’t come across as a soap opera, though the Jehn addiction theme is a bit like that. Still, I’d recommend.
I can’t believe how much I love this series and Briand’s world! I just happened across these books and never read the author before. Every book moves the story along and was better than the last one. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
The fifth book was the best yet. Of course I still have four more to read! I love the addition of Briand’s relationship with Auberon and the tension there. She’s really developing into an awesome character. The first few books she aggravated me a bit but she’s really come into her own. I’m really enjoying this series.
Surprisingly the Character that had the most twists and turns for me in this book was the Prince. I always love a strong female lead and unrequited love, but the unknown future of the strange thinking Prince has me curious!
I say it with every book, this series is one of the best! I love the characters, I love the intrigue that is Jehn. I love the drama and romance and comradderie. Just a great series overall! Absolutely cannot wait to read the next one!
The heartbreak is real and you can feel it in your soul. I swear I was in a foul mood the entire time I was reading this book. It’s that good and you will finish needing the next book! Such a great series
This book stirred up a lot of emotion. Some moments on was on the edge, some in tears and other moments I was angry. Overall I loved this book because of all the emotions, for what book is worth reading if you don't feel something.
I love all of her books but I’m hooked to this story line. I love the characters and the setting. I can’t wait for summer to read the next installment.
This series has kept my interest now for 5 books, which is amazing lately. So many series get repetitive and tedious. These books are fresh and engaging.
