This official souvenir charts Her Majesty's formal and family life over eight decades, presenting a portrait of The Queen as daughter, sister, wife and mother, and Head of State. The 265 illustrations include personal documents, photographs and items from the Royal Collection and Royal Archives, many shown for the first time.
Organised year-by-year, from 1926 to 2006, each page tells a story from The Queen's life. From her childhood are private letters to her grandmother, Queen Mary, her toys and first saddle, her ration books and identity card. Official documents from the Royal Archives illustrate Her Majesty's role as Sovereign over the past 54 years and are given context through photographs from the Royal Photograph Collection.
Magnificent evening gowns and pieces of The Queen's private jewellery, worn on both formal and family occasions, are also included in the book, which has been compiled by Jane Roberts, Librarian of the Royal Library, Windsor Castle.
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Dame Priscilla Jane Stephanie Roberts, The Hon. Lady Roberts, DCVO has been the Curator of the Print Room at Windsor Castle since 1975 and the Royal Librarian since 2002 until her retirement in July 2013.
This souvenir album, made in honour of Queen Elizabeth II´s 80th birthday (2006), is just plain wonderful.
A scrapbookstyle account of her life, starting with the official announcement in the newspaper of her birth, it highlights one (sometimes more) event each year, accompanied by portrait photos, snapshots, pieces of art, dress and jewelry.
Another gem from the Royal Collection; this birthday souvenir album charts The Queen's progress from her birth in 1926 to 2006 on a year-by-year basis.
Beginning with a newspaper announcement of her birth we see the Duke of Connaught's christening present, a magnificent silver cup, photographs of her as a baby while her parents were abroad and the cover photograph is one taken by her father, George VI. The Queen blossoms as she gets older and it is no surprise when Philip falls for her ... and she for him, of course!
Marriage, the death of her father, her coronation and life thereafter forever changed is portrayed with excellent illustrations from private albums and the Royal Archives. Many of the illustrations have never been seen before and go some way to giving a sense of normality to a life that obviously has not been so.
Trips abroad, state visits, less formal occasions, private functions are all depicted and overall it is a superb insight into a privileged life and one of complete devotion to her cause. And The Queen is always smiling and looks completely at ease but surely there must be moments when she is not quite so relaxed and friendly looking ... but there again we can't expect to see such photographs in a book such as this!
A very interesting look at the life of Queen Elizabeth II with great photos of some of the dresses she wore. Also pictures of gifts and jewelry she has received over the years. A wonderful quick read that is informative and fun to look at.
