A journalist accused of hacking the inbox of a billionaire A company which fought back when it's data was stolen An entrepreneur who fought an international battle to end piracy A hacker who decided to take a start-up hostage by stealing its data Full of riveting stories of hackers, police and corporates, Breach reads like a thriller. The book brings to light several incidents which till now were brushed under the carpet. It has instances of piracy, data theft, phishing, among many others. Even though he focuses on India, Nirmal John takes great pains to show links between underground international networks working to undermine data security.
There was once a facade and this book breaks it. Especially being a citizen of India, I am so unaware of the cyber security situation around. You always get a sense of some of these things. Working in a large IT company kinda ensures that you are kept abreast of the latest practices.
I applaud Nirmal John for writing this book and opening my eyes to read a little more into what is going behind the news. Just like terrorism, bullying and abuse; I fall under the category that it happens to someone else and not me.
The digital world out there is becoming more and more cut throat and all you need to show is weakness or absence of mind or just follow down the wrong rabbit hole to feel violated and made into a victim.
Like Insurance, cyber security practices needs to built into our lives unobtrusive , ubiquitous but effectively protecting us from the background. Dont let something truly random ruin this amazing life you are having.
For those who know about the Indian market or are Indian it is a good read, but it might not be something new if you follow the news. The stories that will grab you is how are those in power actually responding to the situation.
A good simple book on cyber security, mainly on cyber crimes which have happened in the past. Language is easy, both technical and English, so even someone who is new to the tech security world can understand, the author has explained the tech jargon wherever required.
The print I read in 2021 was from 2017, so I felt the things mentioned were not up-to-date and I missed the case studies from the latest events. So that is one reason I felt one should think before picking this book.
Otherwise, a must-read to know about digital warfare, cyber security, data breaches, how attacks happen, who are the soldiers and much more.
