2021 Review of the Audible Audiobook: To me, the overall experience of this audiobook was 3.5 stars. I had previously read this book a couple of years ago so I already knew I loved it. In fact, I think I enjoyed it more this second time in audio. When it came out in audio and the author offered me a chance to review it, I was happy to revisit it and see how I felt about it, especially in audio, given that there isn’t a lot of Nigerian romance available in this format. This exciting romance is as I remember- it has shades of social justice, mental health, Nigeria’s queer-phobic culture, and political intrigue wrapped around an opposite’s attract romance about “poor little rich girl” heroine with heart, and a solid, silent type hero with a strong sense of justice.
I found that this romance translated very well to audio. It felt action-packed and exciting and I think the narrator did a good job carrying the story along. I listened in 1.3x speed and found it compelling. However, the performance fell apart for me in the actual match between the narrator and the story she was reading. The issue is that this story is set in Nigeria, using Nigerian names, Nigerian patterns of speech and so, to me, as a Nigerian person who grew up in Nigeria, the way things were said, names were pronounced, was distractingly incorrect. I think the narrator was alright overall and brought the story to life in a way that made me sympathize more with Rita than I did in my first reading of this, but to Nigerian ears, it was an awkward match between the narration and the characters. There’s NO WAY that’s what these characters sound like. And I think more than anything, this amplifies the challenge that many indie (and non-indie) authors especially of black romance or African romance face when trying to get their books in audio. There is definitely a gap in the availability of Black, African and diaspora voices working in global audio narration. I do love that despite this struggle, this author went the extra mile to make her book more accessible and available in audio. I don’t think that the issues with authenticity that I personally had, would signify to anyone who’s not Nigerian or who isn’t familiar with how names are pronounced and the way Nigerian-glish sentences are said with phrasing. I think only Nigerians will notice the things that aren’t said quite right. And whilst distracting, it didn’t distract from the fact that this is still a fabulous story. For that reason, I still highly recommend this audiobook because it makes a gorgeous African romance accessible AND the narration is fine, if not exactly authentic (for understandable reasons).
Many thanks to the author for the complimentary review copy!
2019 Original Review: I'm new to this Nigerian romance writer which is lucky for me because it means I have the privilege of having her backlist to explore. Featuring a corrupt senator's spoiled daughter and a strict ex-Army hero out for revenge against him, this romantic suspense novel set in Abuja in Nigeria is realistic, relevant, contemporary and just really entertaining.
Admittedly, this started a little slowly for me with quite a bit of stage setting where I would have preferred a start with a more action-packed bang. But a few chapters in, once hero and heroine meet, its really interesting from then on out.
This is a really compelling, well thought out romance filled with family intrigue with important themes of mental health, corruption and even sexuality. Whilst this may not be ground-breaking in the world of romance, for a romance set it Nigeria, this is shaking tables brilliant and I loved it. I like that the author created solid, well-rounded characters that weren't just tropes of "poor little rich girl" and "taciturn soldier." The characters had unexpected depth to them and solidly emotional back stories that explained who they were as people and made them 3-dimensional. The author did such a great job wity character development that I wish a little more had been done with some of the side characters like the stepmother, the father, brothers etc (e.g. exploring Rita's character dynamics with them a bit or having them play more of a role as barriers or supporters). But even without that, this was a strong, stellar romance and I can't wait to read more from the author.
