An oversized anniversary epic, told the only way your pre-eminent pals in the Spidey-Office know how — in the Mighty Marvel Manner! For weeks, the Tinkerer has been launching a campaign against his do-gooder brother, the Mason, and Spidey's nearly met his maker more than once trying to stop their sibling rivalry! With a little help from a tech-heavy team of Marvel heroes, Spider-Man takes the fight directly to Tinkerer! But Tinkerer's got tech of his own…and it's out of this world!
Chip Zdarsky is a Canadian comic book artist and journalist. He was born Steve Murray but is known by his fan base as Chip Zdarsky, and occasionally Todd Diamond. He writes and illustrates an advice column called Extremely Bad Advice for the Canadian national newspaper National Post's The Ampersand, their pop culture section's online edition. He is also the creator of Prison Funnies and Monster Cops.
This is extra-sized and full of all the exciting ingredients that one expects from a massive milestone. I haven't kept up with the story, though. On some level I think I had hoped for a jumping on point, though that's not to say the crew didn't do a good job of getting me in on the action. We hit the ground running, but it seems like it's just SO MUCH and there's not really a resolution. There's a great turn-around of heroes besting villains, and then flash-back scene that's original/clever, and then TIME TRAVEL and the story is chock full of gags but it seems the jokes are peppered in and then ended a half-panel too soon. That makes them seem rushed (like Chip had a quota. Gotta get fifteen jokes in, NOW GO!)
I liked a lot of moments in this. Doom, though, seemed out of character. I might have missed something important from the end of Bendis' run on the character. It's hard to keep continuity with the characters and then lose something from that same continuity, though I'm not sure it's the writing or a moment where I blinked in Marvel recent-history. I just feel that the out-of-character bit was there simply to get us to the time travel, and that was not a direction I expected. And the surprise was not a good one. I gotta trust the next few issues involving time-travel are worthwhile, but that's merit that shouldn't count towards this issue and it's initial reading.
Jameson stole the show for me, though. I gave bonus points for him losing his car. Go JJ. :)
(I'm experimenting with a checklist in order to understand what I look for in the genre. This got 28.75/50)

Five stars for the cover gallery alone And also how incredibly hot Dr. Doom is Ok and I like what Zdarsky’s doing even if I’m skeptical about the ride we’re on.
