Adventure, intrigue and romance combine in this sparkling tale of espionage and rescue.
Young widow Lady Juliet Hampshire jumps at the chance to be involved in an espionage mission into France – she will do anything to avoid having to think about her dwindling finances and the necessity of catching a wealthy husband. It is just a shame that her traveling companion is to be the stuffy, snobby Lord Alistair Chisholm. But there is more to the wounded Lord Chisholm than Juliet can see. Alistair has been chasing redemption for years, ever since he accidentally killed his older brother in a drunken brawl. Now the heir to his father’s Marquessate, he should be staying at home, finding a wife and siring children, but he can’t rest until he atones for his grievous sin. And as an experienced spy, he can’t understand why the untried, scandalous Lady Hampshire is involved in his mission. Thrown together and required to work closely, they quickly realize their first impressions of each other are mistaken, and passion flares between them, with both of them assuring the other the liaison will cease when they return to London. But when first one and then the other falls in love, can they overcome injury, familiar strangers, capture and the deepest of betrayal in order to claim their happily ever after?
Bree was raised on a diet of tea and crumpets, sweet romance, epic fantasy, old movies, and swashbuckling adventure. It’s no wonder she goes through life imagining herself in other places and other times. She is owned by Eugenie, a cat who believes herself to be a princess, and Boofie, an old, adorable rescue dog. They also own her husband. She lives in Queensland, but has spent time in three other Australian states as well - Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia. Bree has recently discovered that her wanderlust and itchy feet are hereditary. You can connect with Bree on Facebook by clicking here, or at her website: www.breeverity.com.
A fast paced adventure, skillfully plotted that will hold your attention until the last page. Can a young widow, gossiped about by the Ton, find happiness again? With funds running out, it is important for Lady Juliet Hampshire to marry so that she will not end up destitute. When she is unexpectedly ask to go on a mission in France to uncover some documents, she grabs the chance to earn some money. Little does she know she is paired with Lord Alistair Chisholm, who is looking to cleanse his guilt after a tragic accident when he killed his brother. Can two such souls find redemption in each other? Being thrown together and getting to actually know each other holds surprises for them both as things are not always as they seem or what is bandied about by the gossips. This story is full of intrigue, suspense, danger and unexpected emotions of Juliet and Alistair. I was sorry to see it end and with many surprises that I never anticipated!! Bree Verity writes a story that always has me turning the pages and becoming engaged with the characters!! A tale you do not want to miss.
This was an enjoyable 4.5 Star read. I really liked how the characters were placed in opposition to each other from the beginning. I thought the story was well plotted out, and the twist at the end was a surprise that could not have been predicted. It seemed believable to me that a woman who had married above “her station” in that time period, who then lost both her husband and solid financial footing, would be agreeable to work as a seamstress in France on assignment for the British government. There was the financial benefit it would bring as well as a sense of contributing to the National cause. The initial meeting and relations between Alistair and Juliet are quite believable. The care that the author took in portraying how Juliet had to work at Sewing to make her hands look believable in applying ufor a job as a seamstress, added to the authenticity of what would have been required to have actually have been successful in landing the job. The initial friction between Alistair and Juliet that started on board the ship continued as they set up housekeeping together. That being said, the change in Alistairs’ opinion of Juliet seemed too abrupt to ring quite true. More time or a more significant event in which Juliet’s more refined behavior made a large impact seemed needed to bring about such a drastic change in Alistair’s opinion, it seemed to me. That was the only criticism of the writing itself that I have on this delightful and engrossing story. The political tensions of the time were well characterized and were worked into the story well. Their inclusion in the story makes this historical novel a cut above many others of the same genre. There are sexual encounters in the book, which I skipped over and could have done without. (I agree with another reviewer who would have liked to know what happed to Robert and Lottie afterward. I guess that would call for another book!). I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
An entertaining read 4.5*. After the death of her husband, Juliet is ostracised by the ton due to her humble origins and the salacious gossip of her former in-laws. She is approached to carry out a task of national importance in France, to which she agrees, little knowing that she will also have to pose as wife to her travelling companion. An enjoyable tale of romance and intrigue, though I would have liked to know what happened to Robert and Lettie. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.
Juliet is desperate for money and accepts a spying assignment in France. Unfortunately it’s with Alastair, Viscount Chisholm and they do not approve of each other. As they work together, their attitudes change but can anything develop once they return to England. They have quite an adventure during dangerous times. This was an entertaining read. I was given a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

sorry to say this book really wasnt my cup of tea. i dont usually read these type of books but thought i would give it a try. this was the first book i read in this series . maybe i should have read from the start.
Some laughs, a lot of tension, and Bree tied it all neatly together. I'm glad the mysterious death of the oldest brother was resolved. Happy writing, Bree.
This book is a recency romance with some intrigue thrown in. Set in Paris during the turmoil of the revolution and the war between England and France, our hero and heroine go undercover to unmask a courier network for spies running through a dressmaker's shop. Though a Duchess by marriage, Juliet was a seamstress before she wed. Alistair, though a Viscount and heir to a Marquess, was a second son and Army officer before his brother's death made him a unwelcome heir. Neither one knows anything about the other before their mission except what common gossip says about their reputations, which is nothing but a small kernel of truth wrapped up in lies and exaggerations. As the mission unfolds, these unlikely agents learn to work together and learn to separate the lies from the truth in their lives and their mission. I enjoyed the characters, the historical accuracy and locations. The author brought back a character from the previous book, Hidden Duchess, for a strong supporting role in this story, tying them together which was nice. There was some violence and sexual situations, not terribly graphic, but it is not a sweet and clean romance. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author for review. Since I had read a previous book by her and had enjoyed it, I was happy to read another. 4 stars.
A really great book showing how the upper classes were real snobs even if a commoner Juliet married for love and is a Duchess after she was widowed her in laws spread horrible rumours about her which are believed by society. Alistair, Viscount Chisholm is one of those although a spy and on the fringes of society for supposedly killing his brother whilst drunk. They pair up and go to France to be spies together to intercept and decode messages being sent covertly into England. Whilst there Alistair finds it very difficult to sit and wait whilst Juliet is undercover and does nothing. Things become very close between them, but things start to go wrong and Juliet’s kind heart tries to fix some problems. With someone very unexpected behind everything going wrong which is not disclosed until the end. Will they manage to escape unharmed after acts of violence and get their own happy ending or will society pull them apart. I voluntarily reviewed an arc.
