A deadly mistake in an otherwise routine crime for Brikken Motorcycle Club puts an eight-year-old girl in front of Chief.
Just why Chief steps up to become Johanna's guardian escapes his reasoning, nor has he wasted time trying to find an excuse beyond protecting a child's innocence from the club's criminal activities. He only knows that when he looks down into her sweet, innocent face full of curiosity instead of fear, she moves him. Her eyes are more expressive, her personality more addictive, than anything he's ever experienced.
Johanna fills a void inside of him in a way that being president of Brikken, the son of Rollo, the leader of hundreds of the roughest men, fails to satisfy.
And so, he plants Johanna in his life. He provides and gives, and makes her feel special. She isn't only his taste of freedom from the hard life he lives, but his spring, summer, fall, winter. She becomes his breath of fresh air in a world where betrayal, enemies, and a knife in the back can happen at any moment.
Through building Brikken Motorcycle Club and continuing his father's legacy, Chief deals with heartache, incarceration, secrets. Determined not to repeat his father's mistakes, he creates and manipulates the world around him, including those he permits into his life.
He does everything for Brikken. For Rollo. For his sons— Jett, Olin, and Thorn. For Johanna, the child, the woman, who makes it all possible.
Johanna's earliest memories center around a big man who picks her up, changes her life, and the way his beard tickles her skin. At a young age, she learned there are two kinds of people in the world. Those who love forever and those who love—or maybe can't love—and leave. Her mom left her with strangers. Nene sent her away. Karla would eventually push her away. But, from the moment Chief walks into Johanna's life, he promises to stay. No one has given her the comfort, security, and pleasure that she fearfully needs, until Chief.
Through the tribulations of her childhood, the awakening of her womanhood, and a new world filled with bikers, she learns to survive on promises, trust, and the love of one man, through the biggest struggles of her life.

I liked this, but I thought it had potential to be a lot better. The story was sometimes all over the place, the tension was misplaced, and there were a lot of missed opportunities.
I decided to reread Chief to refresh my memory because I would like to continue this series. I enjoyed it just as much as the first time.

Chief is book 1 in the Brikken Motorcyle Club Saga and my first book by this author. I will start by saying that I'm sorry I didn't read any of her books earlier because I really enjoyed this one. Now it was far from perfect and I did feel uncomfortable with some stuff Chief had said but I was able to put it all aside and really enjoy their story. I look forward to reading more books from this author.
Even as a big lover of age-gap romances, this book drained me. Absolutely horrid on all fronts—garbage story, garbage characters, poor writing, slow pacing, unnecessary 4 year separation, plot holes and weak foundation for the series. I love older heroes but they aren't supposed to be mopey fucks like Chief. Once they get together, I want my heroes to crave their heroines and be possessive about her. Chief is fine with her being with others before he finally makes her his old lady and then is totally fine with being 4 years apart from her. h is naive, dumb and has imprinted Chief on her psyche. There's no hope for her.
Author really missed an opportunity to even explore something here. Her sex scenes were truly atrocious, dialogues were gross and the relationship between H and h never changed from creepy to anything that makes sense.
First of all I wanna say that this book is a first in a saga. Usually I don't like stories that span decades but Debra Kayn won me over. The first meet between Chief and Johana happens when he's 34 and she's 8. He's moved by this slip of a girl and decides to take care of her against better judgement and going acting like never before. We know there's an age gap of 26 years. I love when the hero's much older than the heroine but 26years? I was hesitant at first but I must say their story works perfectly and totally engaged me. You see how their feelings grow deeper and deeper and how they changed during the years. How the deepest affection turns into the stronger love. Johanna and Chief are an indissoluble duo. Johanna knew from the beginning Chief was her man, her soulmate, the same as he did. Her savior, her protector, her lover, her man. Her Chief. Always hers. Always his. After a while you forget the age gap and got invested in the couple. You root for it and have no doubts about their life and love commitment. Johanna may be young, and the youngest among th old ladies but she learned quick and well. You don't wanna mess with her or her man. I love how she's jealous of Chief's beard. It sounds strange said like this but if you read the book you get what I mean. Chief has three sons, all older than Johanna. They will have their own books and can't wait for Jett and Sydney's story, the next planned. There's an amazing and sweet epilogue where you see how Johanna must share her claim on Chief's beard.
HEADS UP: if you aren't into huge age gaps, this one definitely ain't for you. the author pushes that envelop rips that envelop apart cause we have 26 big ones dropping between the H and h
i can see how this book can rub some people the wrong way. Chief makes it clear, later on, okay, at this point i was like,
however, i think the author has some mad skills because this was revealed much later in the book. by the time this was revealed, i loved Chief's relationship with Johanna (Bug).. it was innocent during her child-years. he seemed to be a protector, guardian and above all, a constant in her life she desperately needed since she was young. and i love that he let her experience life. he wasn't selfish even when she wanted to be with him badly when she was like 18 years old. she experienced life outside, even with other men outside of Chief (this is not described in detail though-so we safe;). he didn't try and preserve her innocence for himself (cause God knows how many tricks he went through over the years).
i also appreciated that the author made sure to give us insight of Bug as the president's woman and role in the club. she seemed ok, nothing to write home about, BUT, i still appreciated it.
Can i just give a round of applause to Debra Kayn for a damn epilogue. this was really a 4 star rating but that epilogue deserved an extra half star of its own. the story is rounded up nice-nice..
Chief found her skinny, neglected, alone hiding inside of a box in a shit hole apartment with a dead body in the living room. Eight years old and she had already seen the darker side of life. He looked into her big eyes and she reached up and slid her fingers into his beard in wonder. It was right then he knew he would make sure she taken care of. Such an innocent little thing throw to the wolves. He would ensure she had a chance. Life wouldn't be easy. People would want to hurt her. There was a Rat but no one knew if it was within their Club or their partner Club. She would be forced to live without the one thing she loved most in life. In the end two bodies would be buried and vengeance would be taken.
I am a little late to the party. This is Debra Kayn's 50th Novel and my first time reading her. I have to say I wish I would have known about her before. Her writing style reminded me of Fearless by Lauren Gilley -the cheating. This book follows Bug from age 8 to age 29 and Chief age 34 to 55 - there was a 26 year age gap. They were never "together" when she was under age. It was an emotional roller coaster. At times I was so touched I almost cried while other times I was so frustrated I needed to take a break. Though I started and finished this book in 1 day... I couldn't put it down for long I had to know how their story ended. I can't wait to read about Jett (Chief's oldest son) which is the next book. He has some big shoes to fill.
MY NOTE TO UPCOMING AUTHORS: Hey, upcoming authors! Wassup? If you wanna learn how to make your readers fall for your characters AND the story, LEARN FROM Miss Kayn. Period.
This is the kind of story that pulls you out of a MAJOR BOOK SLUMP. ESPECIALLY IF NORMAL ROMANCES BORE YOU TO NO END.
It's been so freaking long since I have come across a perfect 5 star read. A PERFECT FUCKING 5. NOT FREAKING 4.5.
But I will admit, I am being a little partial with rating this book, though it was a little bit here-and-there. Can't help it though, I am a sucker for a swoon-worthy age-gap romance.
Chief and Johanna are so freaking forbidden for each other!!! Like...I don't understand why I love this level of fucked-up....BUT I DO. I FREAKING DEVOUR THEM. These kinds of relationships are not normal in our world, but it is—up to some extent— in their world. I love MC romances, Man! The angst and attraction are always present in the right proportion in them. Beyond all that, the principles of FAMILY beyond blood is so strong amongst the MC that you'll be in fix wondering if ILLEGAL can GENUINELY meet THE GOOD in the SAME lifetime. It's super-duper easy to get disgusted with all that happens in this book and take Chief for being a child predator, but trust me....he's anything but that. ( Call out on me all you want)
I haven't read many Guardian-Ward romances—which, by the way, are my favorite—but this one definitely gives me Zeus and Lou vibes from Welcome to the Darkside by Giana Darling—which, again... is my favorite book from this trope.
For the record, I don't really enjoy books that are spanned over many years, but clearly, this book is an exception. I particularly read this book for that feel, and boy was I not swept off my feet. I LOVE CHIEF AND JOHANNA!! I LOVE THEM TOGETHER. I LOVE THEM APART. I LOVE THEM IN EVERY SITUATION BECAUSE THEY OCCUPY A SIGNIFICANT SPACE IN EACH OTHER'S HEARTS. Oh, and my heart too! 😩
I don't know why I didn't find this author earlier but I clearly have a lot of catching up to do. Debra Kayn, I was apprehensive of going into a book written in 3rd person, but you clearly proved me wrong. The chemistry that she kindled between these Chief and Johanna was perfect!!! I love books in which characters accept the chemistry that exists between them and leave the rest of the business/resistance on life, unlike books with characters denying the chemistry that life is offering them. I have immense respect for such characters. Call it what you want, baby!
The way their relationship transitions over the years had me glued to the book. Although, I didn't quite like the way Chief and Johanna treated Karla because I am a raging feminist and the whore-shaming got me real bad, especially after what she had done for both of them, but then they kind of improvised on it and all's good when it ends well.
ps. there's no cheating.
I have a confession. I had tears in my eyes towards the ending of the last chapter of Part 1 of the book. My heart could feel the bad omen barging into their lives. I was so so proud of Johanna and Chief for enduring all that they endured during Part 2 of the book. Had it been me, I wouldn't have made it.
I honestly had 0 expectations going into the book and that's what majorly defines my rating for this book in a finer manner. But that being said, I was a little disappointed in the steam level of the book. I expected quite a lot. Lol. So much for having 0 expectations.
Anyways. I just have one thing to say before I go. GO READ THIS BOOK IF YOU LOVE FORBIDDEN, OLDER, HOT, AND HUNKY MEN WHO WOULD DESTROY THE WORLD FOR THEIR WOMEN!
I have to say I love Older man/younger women, but and there is a big but - I was uncomfortable with the age difference, if they meet when she was 18 or over I woudlnt have minded, but 8 years old leaves me feeling very uncomfortable. I did enjoy this authors writing voice and would try another of her books.
Where can I start this is the first time I read a book from Debra Kayn This book is not for everyone keep in mind I love these kind of books especially with the age difference and the whole aspect of the book of how he raised her and fell for each other many people may not agree like I said it not for everybody but I do see where people may have difficulties understanding there relationship on how it’s developed
My only issues is he had feelings for her already and he new she did to for him I feel like he should have stop having sex with other people I hated that it just didn’t sit will with me especially because he new he was going to keep her for himself he should have stop on her part too read it n you’ll understand 😊I wasn’t okay with him having two females but I got over it at the end all I’m gonna say is when he got with her he was with her No Cheating Involved I loved how he was threw out the book with her I had my ups and downs but he was amazing with her I don’t want to say more because I don’t want to spoiled the book but this book does have HEA!!
I hope Author Debra kayn make more book like this one I loved it She did an Amazing job with this book can’t wait for More 💋
This was a good book filled with the action of the mc and multitudes of different kinds of love. I love a good older !an younger woman romance, and I will admit that in the beginning of this story I was worried. This was due to the age gap being so large I think it was like 26 years, which I believe is the biggest one I've read about. But I worried for nothing got into the story and it all worked out in the end with an adorable HEA. The author describes their story as a saga which when she described it made sense and was a very cool way to describe chief and johannahs story. This book while it didn't focus on it also didn't shy away from the fact that the men of these worlds are typically criminals and outlaws who follow their own rules and those rules aren't always pretty; and I know I appreciated no unnecessary sugar coating of watering down of what they are. So a good older man younger woman mc romance would recommend.
I purchased this book and am leaving my review voluntarily. This is a new author for me and the book was recommended via a Facebook group I'm in.
Triggers: large age gap, drugs, suicide, murder
**spoilers** just a few...but read the story. It's good.
Johanna, abandoned by her drug addict mother when she was 8 and found by Chief, MC president.
Chief and Johanna have a connection right from the beginning. He is a parental figure and offers her stability.
Johanna grows up in the MC, always protected by Chief with him being the one constant in her life. Their feelings change towards each other when she turns 16, but ultimately nothing happens between them until she is legally an adult.
Standalone with a HEA. But read the next book as it is a story about one of Chief's sons.
A bit over the top for me. I was a bit uncomfortable with this relationship, but I wanted to give it a try. See how she would tell this tale. I think she is pretty good and will give others of hers a try.
i absolutely loved this book. alright i dont usually like books where the male is a lot older and the female is a young girl but this was a different take on that story.
let me settle something straight off though, i didnt for one minute get funny vibes that chief was grooming Jo from 8 yrs of age at all. its been suggested that there was some grooming and abuse there but i didnt feel that vibe. he actually didnt have sex for the first time (and nothing else either) until she was 19 and then only once, the next time due to prison was 4 years later, so he didnt start having regular sex with her till she was 23yrs old. he kept the boundaries and yeah there was a moment his feelings changed from paternal to something more personal and sexual. he didnt act on that or touch her. Jo loved him always. he saved her. i don't ever feel she thought of him as a father figure. she thought of him as a protector, someone who always had her back and didnt abandon her. so none of that insinuation that there was something seedy about this book, there wasnt.
back to the story, loved the interaction of the club, the sons and chief with jo. really well written and honestly i could not put the book down. it felt fresh and energetic. not a simple rehash of the same plot we've read over and over again in biker books.
definitely recommend this book. it meets every criteria.
This books needs more than 5 stars!!!!Well Debra, after given a heads up about the new direction of your next book I have to say I was very excited and looking forward to read Chief ASAP. I've read all your books and love them all but after I finished reading Chief's story I was overwhelmed with lots of emotions. You have outdone yourself writing an amazing novel. You were right that it would be different from your usual stories but you did it so exceptional, crossing boundaries into a new genre in the best possible way and from now on it will be my favorite from all your books. Loved the way you wrote each character, specially Johanna's and Dean. The plot is full of drama, action, secrets, danger, family banter, Hope, Love, Trust and Happiness. Not just a biker romance story, a must read!!! Highly recommend it!!!
This author wants you to think this is a simple age gap story but be warned, this book is 100% a story about a man grooming someone 28 years younger than him to be with him. He freely admits it.
"She wanted comfort and affection. She wanted to love and be loved. She wanted the security of having someone in her life who wouldn't leave. She wanted him. And, he had made sure she wanted all those things. He'd made her needy and starving for affection. It was the only way he could seal his future."
"Gorgeous. Even as a child, she'd been beautiful, and he'd tapped into what she'd become as she matured. It'd been hell watching her grow into her body."
"And, he'd made sure her dreams always centered around him. At first, having her in his life had been a 'what if' situation. Grooming her to be the perfect woman to fit into his life as president of Brikken. But, somewhere over the years, it wasn't so much his paying attention to her, but her commitment to him. Her loyalty and trust were given freely, and he'd sheltered her feelings, letting her have him in her life."
He had the 2 women he is intimate with, one the mother of his children and the other is his deceased father's old mistress, raise her while he has a father figure presence in her life beginning at age 8. There is a kiss at age 16 and they begin a relationship when she is 19. At which point he takes the house away from the mother of his children, who has just spent 7 years raising her, because she does not agree with what he is doing, and gives it to the FMC. There is not a single occurrence of the two main characters ever having a conversation about anything substantial. There's no chemistry, no relationship building, nothing to make me think they have an epic love story whatsoever. They have nothing in common and he makes her quit her job so she can sit home alone, waiting on him to come back. In fact, there's a lack of meaningful relationships throughout this book. Among the women, the men, the women and the men. Everyone is super detached and void of any kind of emotion. If you enjoy flat characters who are so unfleshed out they will mean nothing to you, borderline pedo grooming, women being expendable by the MMC and the feeling of ick then this might be the book for you.
What a beautiful love story! Chief becomes Johanna's guardian after finding her in the closet. She is tossed into a house who is Nene's lady friend who doesn't really treat her very well, so Chief takes her out of that house and places Johanna with his baby momma name Karla, they have 3 sons together and that's when Johanna feels wanted and lKaoved even though she has very strong feelings for Chief, Debra writes just deep and meaning full books that make you feel so deeply about and I could relate to this book so much in so many ways. Sure the guy wasn't a biker but my first love was quite older for me and so many people thought it was so wrong just like the Karla felt so glad the way the book ended. Can't wait to read Jett's book!
Wow !!!! I loved this book so much!!!! I have to say I've read other books by this author and really liked her style so I had no problem one clicking Chief as soon as it released . I'm so glad I did, I happen to have a thing for older men with younger women and this book Really goes there ( could actually be a problem for some) and I absolutely loved Chief. This book covered all my bases , so if your looking for a really good love story with all the feels and some good MC action / lifestyle thrown in you need to one click this one!!! Can't wait for the next in the series .....
Chief and Johanna's love is unforgettable! Debra Kayn is an amazing author and I always one click her books the moment they are live on Amazon. I couldn't wait to read Chief and Johanna's story and I believe that this is one of the best books by this author. There is trust and affection from the first time these characters meet and what connects them throughout the book is their complete love and respect they have for each other. They stay true in good and bad times and no one can separate them. I can't wait for the next story in this new series!
I can't believe the author made this book work. I put off reading it for a long time b/c of the weird ick factor. And though there are a few parts where I was worried about it nothing actually happened b/t Chief and Johanna until she was in her 20s. The book is well written and is a good mix of couple, MC, character growth and family. It's definitely a strange situation but Kayn's gritty, created world makes it seem more plausible. But Id love to read something from her without a 20+ year age gap! This whole series is pretty much the same.
whew!!! This book. I enjoyed it BUT the age difference was a bit much for me at times. (SHOCKING) because I love me some good age gap books!! I think what made this age gap a big cringey is because she was soooo young to start so it made it a little 🥴🥴🥴😩 especially as the book progressed. At times though it was easy to forget!! Take the behemoth age gap out of it. I enjoyed the book! So much so that I'm actually reading the second book in the series (ANOTHER SHOCKER) because I usually stay away from series!
I love rereading this book, Chief and Bug are a committed and passionate couple. Chief finds Bug when she is eight years old in a drug addiction house. His life is complicated with Kara being the mother of his three sons. He waited until Bug became of age to have adult relationship. I enjoyed reading about the other characters in this novel
Absolutely loved every word. This is another Debra Kayn series that leaves you hanging out for the next book before you have even finished the one you are reading.
The story is fantastic and you just know that the love between Johanna and Chief from the moment they meet is going to be monumental.
Once you start reading CHIEF you have to finish the book. Ms. Kayn introduces to Bracken MC. Chief & Johanna shouldn't work but they do and once you warm up to them, you cheer for their HEEA. Definitely another masterfully written story by Debra Kayn.
I have read other books from Ms. Kayn and her story never disappoint. I love Chiefs and Johannas story. The love and strength between them two is beautiful. Dont care about the age gap. When you love someone that what matters. Beautifully written can't wait for the son's story.
