Lord Stephen Radcliffe is tired of society and in particular, his friend’s ability to constantly lose his heart to whichever eligible young lady catches his eye.
However, this particular young lady, Miss Stanway, is rather different. She seems to care for Lord Morton also.
Determined to prove to Lord Morton that his most recent love obsession is nothing more than sheer infatuation on his part, Stephen states that he is determined to make the lady fall in love with him, simply to prove to Morton that there is nothing of substance between them.
However, there is more to Miss Stanway than meets the eye. There is a reason she is trying to grow close to Lord Morton, a reason that Stephen soon discovers. Determined to help both her and the rather difficult situation with Lord Morton, Stephen throws himself headlong into the midst of their relationship – and finds that it is he who has lost his heart.
Authors Note: This is a clean, stand-alone romance, so there are no cliffhangers.
I found the storyline and the heroine to be lacking, there is so little to the plot and the heroine only learns stand up for herself right at the end. This is also a very short piece of writing, it literally took me an hour to read.
When I began reading this book, I’d been fearful it would follow your typical storyline of a woman’s father getting into so much debt that the only resource for getting out of it, would be giving his daughter away to marry some aged old landed gentry. Needless to say, his daughter would have no interest in marrying the old geezer, for her heart belongs to a much younger virile looking guy.
Which is why I enjoyed that the author, Emma Evans, had decided for the female protagonist, young lady Catherine Stenway to be interested in her father’s idea for her betrothed, Lord William Morton. But, unbeknownst to her, Lord Morton, is the town’s “playboy,” who at the drop of a hat could switch his interest to another woman who has caught his eye. Adding to this mix, Ms. Evans, throws in Lord Stephen Radcliffe who happens to be Lord Morton’s friend and who also happens to know about Morton’s prowess with women.
Being the gentleman, he is, Stephen is irked seeing Morton in the company of Lady Stenway, doesn’t want her to wind up a broken heart because of his friend, throw himself into their relationship, without realizing he’s going to lose his heart to her. However, Lady Stenway had made herself a willing chit, to help her father get out of debt, a father who’s willing to destroy Morton’s reputation if he doesn’t marry her.
With this rivalry afoot, who will wind up helping Stenway’s get out of debt? Who will wind up having her become his wife and have the HEA they’re both are looking for? For having given her readers and myself an enjoyable twist for a familiar storyline, I’m giving Ms. Evan 5 [4.5] STARS for her endeavor here.
William Morton and Stephen Radcliff, both Viscounts, were longtime friends. Morton had a bad habit of falling in love very easily, and every London Season he had an infatuation for a new lady. But for the first time he was serious about proposing a lady, Miss Catherine Stanway. Worried, Radcliff decided he would investigate about her. That's when he was in the right place, at the right time, and discovered that Miss Catherine needed to hopefully get Morton to marry her. Her father was full of debt and wanted to use Morton's good heart, when he was his son-in-law, to pay off his debts and increase his credit. But if Morton refused to marry his daughter, Baron Stanway had a diabolical plan to annihilate Morton's reputation.
Radcliff can make - without much effort - Catherine admits to him the whole plan, and together they begin to direct a way to free Morton from this possible blackmail.
Meanwhile, the co-existence between Radcliff and Catherine causes them to fall in love, and instead of simply ridding the friend of a future problem, Radcliff wants Catherine for him.
The plot is interesting, and Baron Stanway had everything very well planned to achieve his goal. However, I was annoyed by Radcliff's lack of character. His solution to the problem might have been made by Morton, since he was in love with Miss Catherine, but instead Radcliff took his friend out of the way and stole his suitor. 3,5 stars
I got an email with this book as read and review, so I did, in one evening.

Miss Catherine Stanway is a pawn in her father's scheme. She is an u will I g participant, but down not know how to stop it. When Lord Radcliffe offers to help she accepts. Now she does the one thing that throws Radcliffe a curve.
Trying to help Radcliffe keeps up the ploy of trying to take her face films from Not an but all the while actually falling g for her himself. As the plot thickens he finally figured out a plan only to discover from Morten himself the her father has betrothed her to a man ordered than himself.

Two young viscounts, one of whom is yet again in love, and a sweet young lady, the only daughter of a widowed gambler, find themselves involved is a knot of a problem. Lord Morton is in love and wishes to marry the quiet, sweet young Lady Stanway. His friend, Stephen Radcliffe, realizes that his warm-hearted friend Morton has yet again allowed his fickle heart to rule his actions, and worries that Morton’s sudden intention of marrying the young lady is a result of her desire for Morton’s position and money. Stephen sets out to prove Catherine Stanway has no true interest in him, but will willingly settle for the next rich lord who shows more promise of proposing first. But no sooner does Stephen come to the next ball to meet said young lady, than he overhears her coarse, heartless father yelling at his daughter to make sure she makes a young man seek her hand, and thumps the wall for emphasis. He sees the young weep and submitting to the father’s demand to be off to the ball to accomplish his goal. Of course, the weeping girl and Morton’s new love are one and the same. Thus the story begins, and ‘Oh, what a tangled web is woven!’ This is a sweet and clean short story with a HEA ending, appropriate even for younger romance readers.
Beautifully told story of wanting to find a wife and the need to make a free choice as a young female in old school British society of the 1800's.
Emma Evans till the story of Lord Morton Viscount, the handsome rich young man who couldn't decide on a woman to marry. When he is ready to take the big jump is turned down. His friend wins her hand instead leaving our young man embarrassed and alone. He makes the decision to leave his townhouse in London to return to his country home.
As the Lord Morton sends his clothing ahead a beautiful young woman, Juliette hides in the coach and travels to the country home. Juliette or Julia as she introduces herself to Lord Morton is running from her step-brother who is trying to force her to marry the highest bidder or her refusal will led to him taking her most precious gift.
This is a story of a time. I felt I was there through all the ups and down while watching this couple fall in love.
I highly recommend this to all young girls to see they to can say no and fight for their right.
That you Emma for allowing me to participate in this ARC team.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Emma Evans’ The Viscount's Conquest (Lords of London) is precisely the “clean, stand-alone romance” promised by the Author’s Note in the publisher’s blurb - and that’s a very good thing indeed. There are no cheap tricks here, just a thoroughly well thought out plot that’s perfectly executed (and, for those who care, totally Regency Period appropriate). The writing is excellent. I loved the hero here, Lord Stephen Radcliffe, even more than the heroine, Catherine Stanway. That’s not any criticism of the heroine: she was excellent; but he was just extraordinary. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
Standing Up For Love - Viscount Stephen Radcliffe was a sworn bachelor, so when his best friend, Viscount William Morton said he was going to propose to Miss Catherine Stanway, whom he had only known for a month, he decided to test her loyalty and find out more about her. However, what he didn’t expect was to develop feeling for her, as they spent time together.
Miss Stanway found herself as a pawn in a plot, that she didn’t know how to get out of, but luckily she decided to unburdened herself to Viscount Radcliffe, who took it upon himself to not only remove her from the situation, but also provide her with a happily ever after. There's nothing more enjoyable that reading about a man who has sworn off marriage and relationships, finding themselves desperate for love when they find their soulmate. This is an awesome story that you won’t want to miss reading.
A sweet, clean romance, this book has all the elements of a Regency romance. Lord Morton has fallen for yet another young lady of the tonne, and Stephen Radcliffe is determined to prove that she is yet another passing interesting. That is until he overhears a conversation that puts another slant on the matter. As Stephen comes enmeshed in the matter, he finds that his heart becomes involved and the young lady his friend is interested in, has more depth and problems than he could have envisioned. Although a short story, this is a well written romance that jerks at the heartstrings. I loved the characters and the outcome of this story and would love to read more written by this author. I received a copy of this book for free as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
I enjoyed this story very much. It was a quick read with no descriptive sex or foul language. The story was of a woman who was controlled by her evil father. He planned to "sell" her to pay his gambling debts. When Lord Stephen Radcliffe overheard Catherine and her father discussing his plan to snag Lord Radcliffe's friend, Lord Morton, for this purpose, he felt he needed to intervene. The more he learned about the Baron's evil plan and the controlling nature he had over his daughter to bend her to his will, Stephen wanted to come to her rescue to protect her.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book to read and I am sure it will not be the last of this author's that I enjoy reading.
Her father needs her to marry a rake for one reason and she goes along with it. His friend says no, wait a minute. The rake is being threatened by the father. Now there is competition and fun. It is also exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, emotional and so much more. What an entertaining story. I couldn't put it down. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.
Regency romance lovers will enjoy this book by Emma Evans! The main characters, Viscount Stephen Radcliffe and Catherine Stanway are well-written--what you expect from a regency romance. Catherine's father is demanding a good marriage for her so he can pay off gambling debts. I received the novella, the Viscount's Conquest from the author. This is my honest opinion.
This is short, sweet and entertaining. Stephanie is bold, determined, kind, caring and romantic. Catherine is sweet, caring and gentle. What starts as a bet, and a lesson, quickly turns into love. And a very satisfying comeuppance. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
This story was engaging in many ways. It did bother me that the author refers to the main character as Viscount Morton. He would be Lord Morton, not Viscount Morton. Using the correct verbiage makes the story more believable. There were no dance cards during the Regency. That was a Victorian custom.
Just for staying True within the genre and timeline puts her way ahead of the other more well~known authors who I refer to as charlatans. I think it is a well~thought of plot and pretty solid. We need more writers like her.
Another sweet story of two very gentle souls who find forever love with each other. This is a quick read that will lift your spirits and revive your beliefs in the goodness of mankind. I especially love the unfettered joy that was expressed in the character of the young Sophia.
This is a really good book. I liked Miss Stanway's courage in the face of her father's problems and Lord Radcliffe's assistance in helping her out of her enforced marriage.
It's a short story who is tell with Stephen's POV only, which is original because usually, it's the woman's POV or both. The story was kind of cute. It was just too short to fully develop the relationship between Stephen and Catherine.
