The real story of Flight 19: The unsolved mystery of the disappearance of six US Navy aircraft in December 1945

Rate this book
The disappearance of Flight 19, five US Navy Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers, on December 5th 1945 and the subsequent vanishing of a Martin Mariner PBM flying boat which was searching for them remains one of the most baffling and enduring aviation mysteries. More nonsense has been written about Flight 19 than almost any other aviation mystery. The loss of these aircraft has been blamed on everything from giant waterspouts to UFOs and even on the malign influence of the Bermuda Triangle. However, many previous writers have either invented evidence to support their theories or have focused on only a single aspect of this tragedy. This book includes a detailed analysis of all the evidence and concludes that the solution to this mystery is much simpler but no less surprising. The writer has experience of both investigative journalism and flying and uses this knowledge to provide a harrowing account of human failure and fallibility that led directly to the deaths of twenty-seven young men. Clearly set out and meticulously researched, this book finally tells the real story of Flight 19.

When I was around twelve years old, I decided to share some important information with my father: I knew what I wanted to do when I grew up. 'I'm going to be a writer!', I told him. He thought for a moment before replying: 'Don't be an idiot, boy. You'll be needing a proper job.'

And he was of course entirely right. I did need a proper job. Or several of them, because I never did find a career that fully engaged my attention. But all the time, I secretly still wanted to be a writer. I was lucky - I was able to find writing jobs with magazines at first and later with web-sites and they kept me happy when most of my proper jobs simply made me tired.

Now, I'm even more lucky. My two children have finished University and are becoming frighteningly grown-up. My wife (who, unlike my father, has always supported my desire to write) and I have been able to spend several years travelling the world and living and working in some delightful places including Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Italy before settling in Spain.

And now, finally, I can develop the career I always wanted - as a writer. I write blogs and articles for websites, I have clients for whom I write and edit in places as different as Vietnam and Australia and I finally have the chance to write book length fiction and non-fiction.

The author Steve MacGregor sets out to outline his research into the mystery of the Flight-19 disappearance in a logical manner. He is quite successful at explaining the rudimentary timeline and his theory on the happenstance of both the TBM Avenger aircraft and one of the PBM rescue planes sent to find them.

However, in my humble opinion, the book falls short of being a true work of research for a few different reasons. Among other things, it does not contain an index of referenced materials & terms and therefore the reader cannot reference an alleged fact easily. And though there is a short bibliography it is not written in any set standard writing format such as AP or MLA...etc.

Furthermore; though it is a very succinct and simply detailed account of the event, including the subsequent paradoxes after the search and rescue there are a few elements missing from the timeline that the researcher should be aware of and a couple that I believe were overemphasized.

The reader should know that the author's work is a short piece of approximately 110 pages and is meant as one volume in a series of writings about true-life mysteries.

To be fair, I skimmed the book in two hours looking for key elements to a well-authored piece and though I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the story, I sincerely suggest using it as a supplementary reading or as an introduction to a more in-depth analysis by most of the authors listed in the bibliography.

A gift for my son who loves Bermuda Triangle Mysteries, as I did at his age. If a hint of the paranormal is what you're looking for, this is NOT the book for you. However, Steve Macgregor gives an easy to read account and investigation of the evidence of what actually happened to Flight 19, and this book was a quick, but enjoyable read, with some poignancy given to the sad fate of the airmen involved.

Fascinating and great read!

The author presented verifiable facts with proof of evidence. He covered several sides of the story which in my mind makes the information presented a full view of the situation. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the happenings of training flight 19.

No aliens or triangles

Good review of what can happen when we get lost. Following a confused leader will end in tragedy. Tough to go against the leader even if you feel they are wrong.
