RACING D RANCH SERIES BOOK 1 "MAKING HER MINE" A CONTEMPORARY STEAMY WESTERN ROMANCE
This Alpha knows how to take his woman to the down low and dirty...and keep her there all night.
Jake knows what he wants...Her name is Race. She'll be hard to catch, even harder to keep. He's already on a bad start with her. Race isn't in Denver to fall between the sheets with this cowboy. Even though that's what she craves most. Jake wants her...more than once. Can he fix the mistakes he made and win her heart?
Cliffhanger. Warning you straight out, because while it said that it was book 1 in a series on the Amazon page, it did not say that it ended in a cliffhanger and that you'd need to read all 3 other books in the series to get to the HEA. No, that's not the reason this is 1 star, but it didn't help.
Race (h) and Jake (H) meet at a agricultural conference on rancher's rights, but don't realize that they are on opposite sides of a heated debate. Lots of sexual tension lead to a steamy night before the conference begins, but there's an unpleasant surprise for Race in the boardroom the next day. Already burned by an ex husband, where do they go from there? (Granted, you have to read 3 more novellas in the series to find out.)
I was honestly kinda bored with this one. Seriously, this should have been an afternoon read, not one that would get put down and forgotten on my Kindle for a few months. For a 60 page story, the first almost 2/3 was lots of talking and "flirting." Never really felt the connection - just kinda felt stilted and forced to me. Lots of heat once they finally got together, though. That part was well done. Either I needed more banter to their connection (rather than what we had), or I needed things to heat up sooner. Whatever I needed, this one didn't hit that sweet spot.
The ending (aside from the cliffhanger) was rather a let down. After so long with them each thinking about the meeting in their own ways (not realizing the other will be there), the actual Big Showdown in the boardroom was rather anticlimactic. I know that going into details about the content of ranchers' water rights doesn't make for thrilling romance novel reads, but maybe a bit more of the tension of the debate?
I didn't understand Race either. She's not interested in a relationship with Jake. She's accepted that this is a one-night stand. Then she stomps away jealously when she sees him hug his sister? She's described as such a strong character that it felt out of place. Either she wants more with him and could understandably be jealous, or she's writing him off as not worth the one night (as she said, she doesn't share), but then doesn't say anything to him? She had no problem being sarcastic and strongly opinionated earlier! Just a weird scene.
A number of little quibbles too. Like, what hotel that has a claw-foot tub and fireplace in the rooms would serve room service on plastic? Why does Jake need to specify that? There were more, so that's just one. They were just little things that jarred me enough to pull me out and say "huh?".
Editing issues. Lots of homophone and near homophone errors (affects/effects, brute/bruit, etc). And a fair number of verb issues. For a book set in the present tense, there were a number of past tense verbs tossed in, and the verbs didn't always match the subject in singular or plural. This is only 60 pages, so it's harder for me to let these go.
Alternating 1st person POV. No cheating, no OW/OM drama, no love triangle nonsense. Minor suspicion of cheating, but that was an overblown reaction on Race's part and soon sorted out. No real plot or drama, at all, really. As it's book 1 of a serial, I'm guessing that comes more in later volumes. Basically 40 pages of stilted talk and (as we're told) sexual tension, then a steamy scene, then the Big Reveal leading to the cliffhanger to book 2.
Would I read more by the author/in the series? No. I'm not a fan of serials anyway, and I prefer it clearly stated from the get-go that I'll need to buy 3 more books to get to an HEA. But looking at this story specifically, I neither connected with the characters enough nor enjoyed the writing enough to pay $10 to find out what happens to them.

I did not finish this book I found it very hard to get into and work out what was going on.
It started out of no where a took a little while to work out what was going on.
This is book one you have to read several more books to get to the end of the story, I hate when authors do this you have not written several books you have written one book and broken it in to several parts I want a start and middle and and the end to a story not just a few chapters and then you have to wait for the next book to be released.
Knowing it's a short read from the get go, is a usual tip off it's a cliff hanger...Well I fell for it .This was an ok read , since most of it was about the sex. Still would have been a pleasure to read, except the spelling errors made my inner editor kick in.After that it was another job and ceased to be enjoyable.
Loved this story! Jake and Race prove that despite past hurts and the subsequent walls are never too much for love to permeate. Only wished there was more to the ending... left me hanging. But I couldn’t put the book down.
An excellent read. Loved the interaction between these characters. While it is fiction, this could actually happen to you today if you were in the right place at the right time. Sweet and very spicy with lots of interest in the sidelines. You won't be sorry you read it.
Fast pace get to the heart of the matter western romance.
She's been burned before by her ex-husband, so she doesn't expect to want more from a cowboy like him. He's in town on business but the minute he sees her that changes.
Making Her Mine: I loved total opposite Make and Race were but very competitive in the boardroom and comparable between the sheets. Fantastic writing with suspense and surprises. Lots of Hot Sex. Great syory!
Jake and Race found a night of unbelievable sex only to learn they are on different sides. Will they learn that the night of unbelievable sex will be the same to each other. Find out in the next book, UGH!!! Needless to say I HATE books like this, cliffhangers.
If you are looking for a down and dirty read, this short story fits the bill. Hot as all get out but quite poorly written. Grammar issues aplenty and use of the wrong words take away from this quick read.
An interesting start to this steamy story!! Trouble is, each time a new book comes out 8n th series, I have to start at the beginning again to get to the right level of “hotness”
Loved this book, but a cliff hanger? really? It should be a whole novel not part of one.. But i enjoyed it none the less.. Can feel the tension from the very first page to the ending! Jake is so dangerous but his met his match.
