I believe there is a book before this, but the kids didn’t need it to enjoy the story. A boy and a whale have made friends. A winter storm comes up on the lighthouse where the boy lives. His father’s boat is frozen out in the water so the boy walks out on the water and finds the boat stuck in the ice. His whale friend helps the boy get home safely.

It’s a simple and sweet story, easy for beginners. I love the art and the setting. It’s a great winter tale about friendship. The nephew said he wanted to be friends with a whale too. The niece gave this 3 stars and the nephew gave it 5 stars.

Whales have been very fascinating to me since I've watched 'Finding Nemo' and 'Finding Dory'.

This is the story of a little girl and a cute whale.

Recommended for young kids.

Since my own whale-themed book first came out a couple years ago, I've been engaging in occasional close reading of children's picture books about whales. What I've discovered in my "research" is that the basic plot points in these books don't vary a whole lot: most of these books involve either a whale who gets beached on land and has to get pushed back into the sea by one or more land-dwelling friends, or, conversely, a land-dwelling creature who runs into trouble at sea and has to get pushed back to land by one or more amicable whales. Often a book will incorporate both of these plot points, with the whale pushing the land-dweller to safety as a gesture of thanks for the land-dweller having once pushed the whale to safety, or vice versa, using the mirror-image symmetry between the two rescue scenes to convey a lesson about friendship, loyalty, and/or gratitude. It's not plot, then, that makes a whale book stand out. The Storm Whale in Winter seemed to me to stick out from the pack, but this was not so much because of its plot as because of its external trappings: here, the whale plot is almost just a symbolic embellishment upon a story about the bond between a working single dad and his lonely latchkey kid, and I was moved by how the beautiful illustrations really capture that loneliness for love.

Noi, his fisherman father, and his cetacean friend return in this follow-up to The Storm Whale , as the little boy waits one winter night for his father to return from his last sea voyage of the season. When his father does not come home, Noi sets out to find him, walking carefully across the frozen waves. But when he finally does happen upon his father's boat, he finds it empty! Fortunately for Noi, his whale friend comes to his rescue, breaking the ice (together with his whale pod), and shepherding the little boy to shore, and to his father.

Although I didn't find the story here quite as poignant as in the first book, probably because that initial tale focused on Noi's feelings of loneliness, and on his father's understanding of his actions in bringing the whale home, it was still appealing. I enjoyed revisiting these characters, and think that young readers and listeners will feel the same. The artwork in The Storm Whale in Winter was every bit as gorgeous as in the first, depicting the warmth of Noi's home (with six cats!) and the frigid depths of the winter sea beautifully! My favorite scene, visually speaking, was the one in which the pod of whales is seen from underneath, approaching the boat in which Noi is resting. Recommended to anyone who enjoyed The Storm Whale , as well as to anyone looking for picture-books with a seashore/marine theme.

Noi waits for his dad who leaves to make one last fishing run before winter closes the waters. When the storm gets worse and Noi can't find his dad, he heads out across the ice in the dark. When Noi finds his dad's empty boat ice locked his friend the storm whale and his family come to the rescue!

I DID NOT know this was a sequel to another book called The Storm Whale, but I didn't feel a lack in the story, nor do you have to have read the first book to understand this one. Noi and his dad have a good relationship but Noi misses his whale friend and thinks about it at times when he looks at the ocean. I can see where another story could precede this one and am intrigued by its blurb. I'd say this book makes a great follow up centered on friendship this time after the father / son centered story in the first book.

The illustrations are the draw to the book though. Beautiful, evocative and moody, they truly show the way of life in a small fishing village on the water. Showing children other ways to live is a great way to help them be sympathetic and understanding of other children who live differently from them.

This book also teaches about community and relying on neighbors and strangers, and other unexpected sources of help. The discussion can be taken a step further by talking about how we she gratitude for what the fisherman did for Noi's father. This can be done by helping someone else in the community who needs our help but isn't expecting it. Also the first book can be touched on, how the whale returned the favor from the previous book.

The words were fine. Nothing difficult or hard for my nephew to follow. The whale part was by far the most moving to him. We both adored the spread with the whale family as seen from down below. Any scene with family is quite powerful to my nephew and I think many other children would also be so moved!

BOTTOM LINE: Whale Family Community!

Such a wonderful sequel! Again beautifully illustrated with a sweet, heartwarming story!

This will be a short review.

I never expected that The Storm Whale would get a sequel. Sure, I hoped seeing the whale again, but I never expected we would get a whole new book! So I am absolutely delighted, and the story was once again absolutely adore, cute, and heartwarming.

This time it is winter time (duh, given the title). Noi is still looking around for his whale, hoping he would spot him, but so far he hasn't had the luck. I felt sorry for Noi, he cares so much about his whale, and misses him immensely.

Noi was also very brave, because when his dad disappears during the last fishing trip, Noi goes off to find his dad. And what happens then it was wonderful, adventurous, but also very sweet as we have a reunion happening. <3 <3

The ending was really sweet, and I was so happy for Noi, for his dad, for the whale! Yay!

It was also fun to see all the cats again, and to search for them in the illustrations. <3

The art was beautiful, and perfect. I love the colours!

Highly recommended! But be sure to read the first book, otherwise it will be a bit confusing, plus you would miss out on the feels!

We loved it! Gorgeous illustrations and very readable. I'm seeing here that this is the sequel to the The Storm Whale. I'll have to track that one down too. But this one is great as a stand-alone and perfect for cozy winter nights! 5 stars.

Ehdottomasti suosittelen.

Noi and his fisherman-father live on a remote island. Noi is always searching for the storm whale they had rescued and released together. When Noi’s dad travels into the wintery ocean on the final fishing trip of the season, Noi waits patiently at first for his dad to return. Eventually he can wait no longer, and travels out by foot on the frozen sea to search for his dad. With some bravery, and the help of his never-forgotten friend, Noi and his dad are reunited.

Upsides: Everything that is lost is found again and everything will be alright. Winter thaws to spring. Family and friends are reunited even after long and unexpected journeys. The illustration in this picture book is beautiful, and lends nicely to the sense of independent adventure that the text creates. One two-page spread looks down at the tiny Noi walking far from his boat on the frozen waters, making the reader pause just at the scale of it. It is an excellent read for the worrier and warrior kids alike.

Downsides: More of a caution here - Noi and his father live alone on a tiny island, and Noi (of indeterminate age) is very independent. He travels out alone on the ice to search for his dad’s boat, which may not be the best lesson for kids that are rambunctious when left home alone. To be sure though, the story can lead to some excellent conversations about personal safety, responsibility and expectation.

BEAUTIFUL illustrations. If this were a book with only pictures, no words, I don't think the story would change at all. The illustrations are so perfect in telling us what is happening. From Noi looking out the window, watching for his father to return. Then the whales pushing the boat, with Noi on it, towards a lighthouse, where we already know his father is waiting. I think the lighthouse is significant in this story. A symbol for home, safety, guidance, family. This story just melts my heart. I definitely enjoyed this second book more than the first, though they are both good stories.

Oh. I guess this is a sequel to another book which I haven't read. Good thing Goodreads tells you that sort of thing. Maybe I can find the first one around here...or...I could just be lazy and finish this review half-heartedly... Yeeeeeees.

A sequel to ‘The Storm Whale’, where Noi’s dad goes out on his boat but doesn’t return. Noi ventures into the icy ocean to find his dad. Although Noi’s dad’s boat is found, dad is not.

The storm whale and its family find Noi and help to return the boat back to the Lighthouse, where dad is waiting.

A lovely story which shows that friends can be depended on and the importance of helping each other.

No on nunnu küll. Kujutan ette, et ettelugemiseks täpselt õige pikkusega lugu pisematele tegelastele. Ja ma tahaks sellist majakest merekaldal.
