only one explanation
for why we are here.
Why our souls choose
to incarnate as mortals
only to suffer for a hundred years

we were once angels
who chose to manifest as humans
in order to experience the imperfect

About the author

Dr Kamand Kojouri is an Assistant Professor of English at the American University in Dubai and a Fellow of the Emirates Literature Foundation. She holds an MA and a PhD in Creative Writing from the United Kingdom, where her work was shortlisted for the Peters Fraser + Dunlop Award and published in CityNovel 2016. In 2024, her short story "Felix" was shortlisted for the prestigious Rhys Davies National Short Story Prize and published in A Dictionary of Light: The Rhys Davies Short Story Award Anthology.

Kamand’s work spans multiple genres and has been featured in leading international publications, including the BBC, El País, and The Irish Times. Her first poetry collection, The Eternal Dance: Love Poetry and Prose was published in March 2018. This was followed by God, Does Humanity Exist? in March 2020.

All royalties from her books are donated to nonprofit organisations that support children living in poverty or hardship. With every book sold, Kamand also funds the planting of a tree in Sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative helps provide families with food, income, and sustainable livelihoods. To date, more than 4,100 trees have been planted.

Kamand’s teaching and research are rooted in a strong sense of social responsibility. She is committed to highlighting marginalised and disenfranchised voices through both her courses and her creative work. In 2025, she co-founded the AUD Spoken Word Series, an initiative that fosters inclusivity by amplifying diverse voices and cultivating a vibrant culture of storytelling, dialogue, and shared humanity.

I fell in-love with Kamand’s poetry more than a year ago and I was thrilled when this collection was published. It stands on my night table ever since and every once in a while I pick it up and I choose randomly a poem. Then I find myself turning the pages as words dance in front of my eyes and my heart feels the music. I see this collection of poetry as an eternal love dance. The dance of words. Some are about deep passionate reciprocated love, others about the inevitable pain when the love for someone it remains sadly one-sided. It is a declaration of love from the author to its muse presented in different section: love, attraction and infatuation, enchantment, heartbreak, devotion and obsession, understanding and unity. It is an emotional journey in the world of words. The message of each poem is deep yet easy to understand. To conclude, I would describe the whole collection as eternal beauty.

Type of reader: Lover of poetry and love in general. For those that admire how the words flow on the paper and take their time and reflect upon the infinite messages those words captured within.

It is impossible to pick a favorite poem from this collection but here is a fragment of one from the many:

“Knowing you,
I became mindless.
Having wasted previous wishes,
I’m riddled with regrets.

I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways. As always, an honest review.

The Eternal Dance is a passionate book of poetry about love. The author really captured her feelings and put them into words. The poems range from 1 line to about 20 lines. As with many other books of poetry, it was easy to pick up and read a few poems here and there. Most poems were easy to understand, even for someone like me who doesn't read a lot of poetry. I wasn't completely absorbed in them though. I liked that the book had sections such as attraction and infatuation, enchantment, and unity taking the reader through a sequential journey. In general, I enjoyed The Eternal Dance by Kamand Kojouri.

My favorite book. I love things that tug at my heartstrings and make me daydream about love endlessly. I wasn’t in love at the time I read this, but now that I am it is even more beautiful. It’s the kind of book that makes you wish you were in love. It’s also the kind of book that makes you feel like you’re in an angsty high school relationship and has you feel those emotions. But it has some beautiful lines of poetry that I will remember for forever.
