No knight can match her. No professor will pass her.
Jess has a warrior's passion, a Druid's gifts, and a professor planning her downfall. If she doesn't act the proper lady, she will be sent home in disgrace. But when slavers bring misery and ruin to her homeland, she trades silk and lace for iron and steel. Expulsion is the least of her worries, with an entire fortress of enemy soldiers waiting to kill her.
If you like stories full of exotic magic, visceral combat, and a girl willing to take on all odds for the sake of her friends, then you'll love this exciting new series, eight books in all!
This was a good start to The Risen Queen series, but I'm still deciding just how much I liked it.
I loved the fact that no one bats an eye when it comes to same sex relationships and thought the story had great promise. But then Jess and her lovely lady crush, Rowan, slept with a man to get close to him. It irked me 'cause it didn't seem necessary. Here are two strong, able ladies who are warriors and all that training goes out the window 'cause they're forced to seduce a man just to plant a tracker on him.
Johnson's such a great author, I was looking forward to reading a story where the main character is a female who holds her own against anyone who tries to do her wrong. I might just put this aside for now... so I can think about whether I want to read the rest of the series.

The story has intriguing and Jess a mostly likable character... except when she'd swoon at any cute guy that smiles at her and immediately turns from a hardened warrior into a simpering harlot. The writing itself is pretty bad, like moderately decent fan fiction levels of bad. Typos abound and often it feels like the author is a teenager trying to impress their creative writing teacher by using rare words (I can't even tell you how many times the word bonhomie shows up), ponderous sentences, and metaphors that they clearly like so much that they must use them repeatedly. And the dialogue! It's so over-the-top expository, especially at the beginning, that it comes off as comical, as if the character is being playful, but then you realize that they're not.
Not quite what I expected when I picked it up. There were definitely parts that made me want to put it down, and ignore it because of it's content, (never been one for the whole female's being used as objects thing), but for the most part, it wasn't a bad story, and I guess I'll read the next one in the series to see what it's all about, but if that one has more of the same, then I won't continue any further with the series. It's nice that she's a druid, and that's great fun, especially when she can make the trees seek revenge for their own cutting, but I don't get the whole have to be a sex object in order to accomplish the mission thing. Admittedly, there wasn't a whole lot of that, which is why I could overlook it, but it still bothers me, and I don't consider myself to be a prudeg, so if you're bothered by such things, you might want to give this one a pass, otherwise, it's a very good story, and well worth the reading.
Intrigue, fierce battle, and a fair bit of romance thrown in for good measure
I really enjoyed this book. The story was well told and quite captivating. The author did a great job of introducing us to a world with lots of rich history. Amazingly, this is but a prequel to the story the author really wants to tell. Thankfully, it tells a compelling story with no cliffhanger ending. I look forward to reading more of Jessica’s life in the books to follow.
Your highness I have just finished reading the beginning of your tale, and withe your permission and indulgence, I would like to read the whole of your tribulations and triumphs. With respect and affection.
Definitely has some cathartic violence. I have the feeling of a fantasy written by a scifi author. I liked his endless online series and am curious where this one will go. This reminds me of Elizabeth Moon's stories with a little less polish.
Jess is in a school of Squires. She wants to protect her lands. She happens to be the last of her kind, a druid. This was a good story. The book has some humor, love scenes and bloody due to battles.
This book is rather interesting. Not really a fan of these kinds of books. But have to say this book is well written. Also, I love how things develop later on.
Ok, sounds fun but when a rebellious girl who wants to be a warrior goes to one!!! salon event and starts swooning at a kiss described in 2-3 pages you've lost me.
