The Stunning Conclusion to Jay Allan's Crimson Worlds Refugees Trilogy!
The Final Struggle…
A battered group of human ships, fighting for survival, fleeing deeper into the far unknown, pursued by the deadly forces of the genocidal artificial intelligence known as the Regent.
A legendary commander, the man who has saved his people time and time again, struggling to lead the fleet ever forward, fighting through every attack the enemy throws at them.
A hidden world, a remote refuge prepared millennia ago, holding the promise of a new future, if the fleet can reach it…and hold it against the Regent’s relentless attacks.
Admiral Terrance Compton and his lost fleet battle their way forward, striving to reach the end of their great journey. They will fight, with all the strength and power than remains to them, standing firm, resolute against all the force the Regent hurls at them. But their destiny is no longer in their hands.
In the end, the fleet’s survival rests on the courage and strength of a tiny force of Marines and a desperate mission, one that will lead this group of warriors right through the enemy’s thickest defenses, to the very heart of the enemy’s domains, the ancient homeworld of the First Imperium…and the inner sanctum of the Regent itself.

Another rousing adventure for Jay Allan. If you like military science fiction you will love this book, this series and this author.
Pursued by superior ships sent by the Regent to destroy humanity Admiral Compton knows he has to do something different or it will only be a matter of time before his fleet is eliminated through attrition.
Lots of typo's and grammatical errors in the last half of the book was a minor distraction
On our way to Shangri La or the planet that promised to hold untold advance technology that should help us finally defeat the Regent. As you know by now, the Regent is the actual enemy. It is the super intelligence behind all the mindless robotic attacks against the humans. It’s sense of self preservation has some how over ridden it fundamental program which was to server the Old Ones of this ancient race. It and it alone, decided that the Old Ones were a threat to its existence so it methodically began to exterminate these ancient humans. The weapon it used has worked before to wipe out hundreds of thousands of humans without a shot being fired. And now it was going to turn that weapon lose upon the humans of this new fleet.
Dr. Cutter has found references to other human civilization that the Old Ones seeded just as they had Earth. Admiral Compton, strongly urged by his scientist. agrees to send out an exploratory vessel to find this other civilization and see if they can become an ally in their fight against the First Imperium. That single ship sets out on a voyage alone knowing that the fleet will forge on without them to Shangri La. If they can return, they will meet back up with the fleet there, but first they have to find this other human planet. I wonder what they will find there, and more importantly, what will they bring back. Could it be something useful or could it destroy the rest of humanity?
While this is going on, the fleet is still fighting sporadic attacks by the First Imperium. These attacks are not large, but just enough to wear down the fleet. It is slowly using more and more ships and crew. The surviving crews are becoming battle weary and barely able to continue at their stations. Something must be done to bring some rest to the fleet and Admiral Compton has a plan that could do just that.
He decides to split the fleet into two groups. One will head for Shangri La while the other will fight a delaying action leading the First Imperium on a different path. It’s hoped that this rearguard can pull the First Imperium away from the main fleet so they can continue on in relative peace for awhile until they reach Shangri La. HIs plan works for the most part. Surprisingly, the main fleet does reach Shangri La and then Doctor Cutter has is work cut out for him. He, some how, has the knowledge to operate the vast underground laboratory which will make Shangri La very useful to the fleet at least for a while. But, the equipment is very, very old. Some has decayed beyond usefulness and is inoperative, but there still may be just enough.
But, nothing appears to be immediately available to defeat the Regent. Except for the last logs of the ancient Old Ones who had a plan, but it was never executed. Their time ran out. So, can this plan be revived and put to use. If so, its chance of success is extremely low, but it might be the only chance the human race has to survive.
Also, surprisingly, Admiral Compton decides to lead the rearguard group against the strong objections of his fleet Admirals. He is tired of sending his crews to their death without truly risking himself in these numerous battles. He feels it is now time for him to commit something other than order his people to their death. So, he and the AS Midway are now caught in the midst of numerous running battles with First Imperium starships of which Admiral Compton can only hope to defeat. Soon, everyone in the main fleet believe that Admiral Compton has died, but his successor, Admiral Erika West carries on. She isn’t Admiral Compton, that’s for sure. She commands by fear for the most part which doesn’t make her well like by the fleet. Still, the job is hers and she will do it to the best of her ability or die trying and so will her fleet!
I was surprised by the ending of this book. It’s almost like the series could end here, but the epilogue indicates that isn’t happening. Still, there is a significant action at the end of the book that makes it hard for me to see this series continuing. But apparently it will because book 4, "Winds of Vengence” is already published. I’ve got that book, but I think I’m going to read something else for awhile. There just doesn’t seem a compelling reason to continue on with this series given how book 3 ended. Of course, you might think otherwise.
Good space opera. This is the third (and not entirely final) book in one of several series that branch off from the author's "Crimson Worlds" series. (Jay Allan must be a veritable writing machine--his output is something impressive.)
There is a fine and admittedly subjective line between emphasizing the travails of a main character and being excessively repetitive about it. For me, this one occasionally strayed into the repetitive zone. At the same time, I might not argue with the contention that such repetition is intrinsic to this style of space opera, as in the work of EE Doc Smith and others. Other than that, it has a good story, well-defined characters, and the requisite cataclysmic space battles.
I also noted, with disappointment, a marked increase in the level of f-bombing--still far below the sorry carpet f-bombing of some other modern sf writers, but a needless crutch to which this writer need not resort.
Before you start this title, please realize it is a spinoff / continuation of a much longer series by the author. You need to read Marines: Crimson Worlds I first, and all of the other books in that series, and the first episode of this new series, or this episode won’t make much sense with the background story and characters.
If you were a fan of the Crimson Worlds series as well as the first two volumes of the Crimson Worlds Refugees, I believe you will like this one. Compton and his stranded forces continue to flee and fight the units of the First Imperium and the battle scenes are very realistic with no hope of resupply or reinforcements. Similar to other books in the series, the future technologies are something you can wrap your hands around. The author once again does a good job of getting you emotionally involved with his characters as you get to appreciate new characters yet feel the pain – and get a little depressed – as characters die off in the continuing battles. Without having a spoiler, this episode brings the main part of the story to a conclusion with a hint of more to come.
I picked this up for $4.99 in the Kindle version: if you have enjoyed previous episodes of the Crimson Worlds series, you will certainly get more than $4.99 worth of entertainment value out of this one.
Admirals Compton and West have lead the fleet to the hidden world prepared five hundred thousand years before by the last surviving members of the Old Ones as a repository of their technology and science. The Old Ones' ancient enemy is still fighting to protect its Imperium. That enemy is the Regent, the massive Artificial Intelligence created to manage the thousands of worlds and millions of robots in the Imperium. Having destroyed its creators half a million years ago, it is now focused on exterminating humanity. Can the Admirals find the way to save the fleet? A great story and I recommend this book.
Probably the best I've read from Jay Allen's brilliant mind.
I just completed books 1 thru 3. This is definitely a series that was almost impossible for me to stop reading. Admiral Compton,s desperate struggle to save his multinational fleet against a massive alien invasion fleet and save the entirety of all humanity. Keeping the enemy engaged to slow them from finding a way to reach our home worlds. And yet maintaining the combat effectiveness of all his ships and people. This is a must READ!!!
I thought this was going to be a trilogy but apparently there's more coming. Should be interesting to see if the story holds up.
Revenge of the Ancients was pretty much what I expected. The fight for survival, ships and key characters being lost - sacrificed to save the fleet. All that kind of stuff. I won't mention names - no spoilers. I felt a bit let down by the ending of this book. But I guess that's why the series continues.
Now are they not only fighting the Regent, but his new biological weapon. If that isn't enough, there are nanobots that take over people. This is getting too far out there, making the story even more unbelievable. Spoiler Alert. Now there is another Regent they will have to fight without any help. I am done with this series, it is just more twists to keep a story line going no matter what.
Adm Terrance Compton continues with the fleet searching through the First Imperium for the planet they now call Shangri la with the addition of seven Imperium ships Dr. Cutter's virus has controlled. The "Regent" is now throwing Imperium units almost randomly at the fleet.
I bought this in the bundle. I enjoyed this book and had a few errors throughout. The plot has grown well and has been exciting to read. The characters have developed also throughout the series and make decisions that seem crazy, yet work well. The book seems to be rushed in places and leaves out information that should be filled in. I enjoy this series and look forward to book 4.
I enjoyed Revenge of the Ancients. It was well written.
I found myself speed reading through chapters though... I don't think there could be much more repetition in a book. Good guys fight, should lose, amazingly, against all odds win...
Still... I enjoyed the read. Was not a waste of my time. I have loads of respect for Mr Allen. Solid work. 3ish stars
The battle continues with the regents forces, but Admiral Cromptons remaining ships and crews may have finally for a way to win this war. I was unhappy about the final round of deaths in the book.
Interesting story line but this volume leaves much to dedired. Repititious, everyone is a hero, they all have feral looks, and it must ve a navy 8f amazons. I left disappointed. If the next one is as weak i am done with this author. Predictable.
So, So ending to a very exciting series. Kinda ricocheted around , trying to develop a proper ending. It was OK but not up to par with the first two installments.
Though this book is somewhat predictable it is still a good read. Supposedly there is a fourth book coming but this will be the last in this series I will read. It ended how I wanted it to so I am pretty happy.
The rolls we each Play in the ever round of life,is not Written in how we are but in what we are in bettering others ,thinking of oneself, will never bring happiness.
Humans have battled the Artificial Intelligence known as the Regent and won. Against enormous odds the AI was defeated and a new earth colony established, but will it survive and for how long? Will the Regent have revenge?
Continuing story of Adm. Terence Compton and his decimated fleet of earth's starship as they seek the Regent, an artificial intelligence determined to eradicate all biological entities. Lots of action and intrigue spread across the vast reaches of deep space.
Jay Allan could have ended this series with this audiobook as a trilogy but no not him, there are 2 more audiobooks to go. He is truly an amazing writer and Jay Snyder is an amazing narrator. Excellent space war story which I fully recommend.
Great very full of action it’s science fiction at its best the writing was excellent the ending wasn’t what I thought it would be and I own the next book in the series the narrator did a fantastic job Thank you Jay Allan for writing
Excellent follow on for the story with twists on the way. I felt some of the timelines got confusing and so suspect but it didn't detract from the overall story. Finished with the plot hanging for the next book which I will approach shortly with the hope it doesn't regurgitate previous plot lines.
I loved how this book continued the complex storyline. The characters were complex, well written. There were so many plot twists and turns it kept me on the edge of my seat. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
I have really enjoyed all of the space battles, the character interaction and universe building you have done in this series. I know others will as well so I recommend this series.
They’ve finally arrived! But can the refugees hold onto the world the ancients left for them? Will they be able to secure their future, will the Regent ever let them?
