A collection of sweet and funny stories. I loved how some stories were thoughtful and had a moral while others were just pure fun silliness.
Each story is set within or around the first series. I would have to say my favourite was either Rebound (because it not only tied into the tv show but also to the ongoing comics...and of course, Mai!) or Origami (for the feeling of nostalgia it gave me).
The art style changes for each story. While most aren't bad, there were a couple that were drawn in this like uber cartoonish way and it was a little too much for me. I'd say that is what keeps this from being a 5-star book for me!
I would recommend any fan of Avatar to read this! Or this could be a good introduction into the world of Avatar 😊
I'm not sure I actually liked any of these short stories. They feel much too removed from the world of Avatar, by this point, with uneven writing and downright bad art. It's a shame how far we've come from the high days.
I'm a hoe for when it comes to graphic novels relating to the Avatar the Last Airbender universe and I usually adore everything that gets produced in there. Except this that is.
The art style felt immensely off putting to all the other graphic novels in these series. Also I don't feel like I've read anything noteworthy or worth memorizing. This could've been handled better I'm afraid.
↠ Genre: Avatar The Last Airbender Universe. Comic ↠ Pov: Multiple ↠ Type: Standalone ↠ Rating: 2 stars
This was a bit of a mixed bag for me - I think all the stories were charming enough, (although I think the Pebble was my fave) but there were some issues with the art for me - not that any of the art was actually bad or that I didn't like it on its own - but sometimes I just couldn't recognize a character until someone said their name. I will say it was nice to have these sort of 'detached' little stories that don't really need to be read in any chronological order - and I like that they experimented a bit with the art style although like I said I sometimes just couldn't even recognize characters.
It's literally just published fanfiction so I wasn't expecting much, expecially because of the cover art. Art and writing quality are sometimes decent and sometimes terrible. One of the shorts uses the term "mouthy broad" which took it down a star for me because of how the term doesn't fit within the universe. Cannot recommend reading.
spoilers for The Promise, The Search, and The Rift
The comics I mentioned above are the ones I've read in the series asofar - I still have the rest of them to go.
And I swear -
On that note, I quite liked Rebound because I liked seeing Mai. But still - what I said above better happen.
All of these comics have different artists, but none of the art styles are so extreme that it affects the story. I quite liked it.
A handful of these stories are just cute little detours - like The Substitute and The Scarecrow, but since not all of them are like this it gives a really nice balance.
Toph and the Boulder is a bit of a cute funny one, but it's seriously quite sweet to see Toph and the Boulder interacting like friends outside of the arena. That was - I keep saying this - cute. "I didn't see anything," squee.
Shells is very obviously about fanboys and fandoms and gatekeeping, and it is cool to see it so openly acknowledged in this comic. Also, Suki and Sokka are so freaking adorable and I absolutely loved them in this. So much.
I really loved Sokka's Poem - it was shockingly sweet and full of depth. I don't know if I have a favorite of the Gaang, but Sokka really has a special place in my heart - as the only nonbender in this group, he has a level of insight into the world that the other's don't. And this short little thing about his place in the Gaang - I love it so, so much.
Origami is a simple, sweet story. I do think it was pretty harsh on Sokka, as he's in the background just eating and groaning about doing anything emotional, but the art of "paperbending" is a really pretty angle in the Avatar world.
Sisters was really good because it gave some details on Ty Lee. I do wish that Ty Lee commented on Azula or Mai at some point in this, but I liked seeing her backstory and the hints of what she's doing now. Very nice.
5/5 stars. The thing that I mentioned in the spoiler tag earlier had better happen in this series, but, on its own, this is a fantastic little book about the Gaang. I really want to rewatch the show soon. It's the best.
I am in a season of life where anything Avatar can do no wrong. And yet, somehow, this graphic novel got it all so terribly wrong.
Team Avatar Tales is an anthology of short stories that take place shortly after the original animated series concludes. None of them add anything to the universe or characters. They are so poorly written and so poorly illustrated. There was a single story that I thought was decent. It was a brief Ty Lee adventure called "Sisters" and it at least had a little heart to it. But that's about the only nice thing I can say about this collection.
It does not feel Avatar. It does not sound Avatar. It does not look Avatar. I have no clue what happened here, but this is NOT it.
Like any collection of short stories, I liked some more than others. Overall very cute and I think this would make a nice gift for someone who has watched the Avatar show but hasn't read any of the comics, since it's just little stories about favorite characters.
(Also can we talk about how pretty Katara looks on the cover??)
