Brief Encounters

Rate this book
Eleanor Ivy follows two rules in life: know how to lie and never let anyone in. With the painful life she left behind and the unorthodox job she currently has, lying is a must. But when Eleanor meets Jess Parker, Breslin University’s hockey player both on and off the ice, everything she has worked for threatens to come crumbling down.

Jess Parker is the epitome of everything Eleanor wants to avoid. He’s popular, cocky, and has more girls’ numbers than a phonebook. Yet, when they are paired together for a school project, their connection is undeniable. As their friendship develops, Jess’s ability to truly see Eleanor shakes the very foundation she’s built her new life on. When Eleanor begins to question the two rules she has always followed, she finds herself wondering if honesty might actually be the best policy. But, when all is said and done, will the truth be too much for Jess to handle?

Brief Encounters is Scarlett Hopper's debut novel and the first in The Encounters series. It introduces us to a wide variety of characters, told in Eleanor Ivy's POV. We learn how she came to be a college student with a not so ordinary job, all while following her love/hate relationship with campus playboy, Jess Parker.

This book instantly captivated me and had me so intrigued to find out what Eleanor's secrets were. I really liked the hints of mystery that we got throughout the story and it definitely made my enjoyment level go up. These characters were all very well developed and I liked getting to learn about their pasts as well as who they were in the present.

The story was definitely more focused on Eleanor than anyone else, but I really thought that was a good thing with this book. It let us follow her life and romance without anything distracting coming in and making the story too jumbled. And even though she was the main character focused on we still learned plenty about the other characters to keep them a big part of the story.

Overall this is a book I would certainly recommend to anyone that likes a NA novel with a bit of a mystery to it. I already can't wait to see what more will come from this series and characters.

First off, thank you so much to the author for providing me an early copy.

The description of this book has curiosity skittering through my brain. Because girl, when you read that she has an unorthodox job and that lying is a must, you're all over that shit.

My kind of low rating it's because even though the plot was good, I felt like there were not a lot, but some subplots that felt unfinished... or maybe it was just my inner beast who wanted more.

The main characters... Ok, don't hate me here but I think that Jess and Eleonor were good just as friends. I didn't enjoy them as a couple, and I really hated how easy they hurt each other.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good book. It just didn't work for me.

I can't wait to see what Scarlett Hopper gives us next.

I was received an arc of this book by the author for an honest review. THANK YOU!!!

This is not your typical college story where the popular guy gets partnered with girl and they fall in love. It is so much more!! The characters are well written and developed. It has a great plot, with enough mystery to keep you eagerly devouring the book till the very end. I truly couldn't put this book down!

Eleanor is not your typical college student. She and her best friend had some very bad things happen in their lives and took an unorthodox route to get them where they are now. College.

In class she does get pared with Jess on an assignment. Eleanor quickly realizes that she judged him wrong, and they begin a friendship. This friendship eventually turns to more, and she struggles with what she wants and what she feels she deserves. As secrets come to light, you are left wondering how it will all work out.

Again, I couldn't put it down. I am so happy with this book and author. It is one of the best first books from a new author I have read in forever. I will definitely be adding her to my automatic one-click list of authors!

Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book!

This book is not what you’d expect AT ALL. The synopsis sets it up to sound like the typical quiet girl placed with playboy for school project and they grow closer and all that. Very cliche. But no, that’s not what happens at all. I mean, it is; they are paired together and the project is the initial reason for talking, but they end up becoming friends. Friends that hang out and learn about each other and after a while, feelings grew. The relationship blooms from there and it’s all very natural.

Eleanor fascinated me. She is such an interesting and strong female protagonist. Throughout the book we learn more and more about the past she’s hiding, but from the get-go, we’re introduced to her as a “companion” for paying men. Quite honestly, I loved this. It’s so unique, yet not unheard of in society. It happens and it is a better way to go than prostitution. But more so, I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with a character in a situation like this. Maybe erotica, but that ends very differently of course. But like a wholesome, contemporary book? No. Eleanor is spunky and funny, emotional and down-to-Earth. She’s such a great mix.

Jess too is not the type of character I was expecting to read about. Again, from the synopsis I’m expecting a playboy with very little depth. Because the author took the friendship route for thier relationship, it really allowed his character in particular to develop deeper. He’s more than just the hockey player. In fact, he has real feelings. Something that often doesn’t like to exist in contemporary NA novels. Now as for who Jesse really is, or who his family is, blew me by surprise. I did not see that coming AT ALL. But I will stop there.

The story itself is phenomenal. Everytime I think I had something worked out, it went ahead and did the opposite. But they were always good surprises! Their getting together was adorable and a slower process. Their separation wasn’t for stupid reasons. They fought to be together and they continue to fight to be together afterward. I won’t say much more on the plot for fear of spoilers, but just know it’s great!. I was pulled in and stuck by probably page 5. Maybe earlier.

I’m not one for quoting in my reviews because that takes time for me to take note of the exact wording, but I had to grab this following one:

“I can’t watch you walk away from me, from us.”
“Then close your eyes, Eleanor”

Look. At. That. Is that not the most heart wrenching, devastatingly beautiful combination of words you’ve ever seen? I read them, stopped, went back to reread and process these lines and just kinda stopped for a moment. It’s his response....Something I wasn’t expecting, nor have ever heard in this situation, or just...it just tugged at something in me. Pure poetry.

I feel like I could just ramble forever about this book. I was nervous going into it for various reasons but by about 10% in all those worries were gone. This is such a fantastic read and I recommend it to anyone reading this. I’ll be keeping my eyes out for book 2!

This is new author for me. I was lucky enough to get a ARC of her story. The story was a little awkward at times but smoothed out towards the middle. It kind of went a little long.
The synopsis had me curious about mysterious job and Jess's life. What made her get this job and why all the lies. This was an interesting story filled with secrets and twists. Just when you expect the story to go a certain way it may change. The romance between Eleanor and Jess was not perfect. It was messy with twists, turns and some pettiness. It is told from Eleanor's POV. We see here grow and change with the situations presented to her. YOu find yourself cheering for her and getting frustrated with her. The other characters add to the story and some of them are interesting enough to get their own story.

Brief Encounters was a hard story for me to review to be honest, because I'm not one who likes to talk about what I may not like in a book. However, I'll try to get my scattered thoughts under control to try here without giving anything away. Eleanore was a complex character, as she had too much happen to her by the time she was 16 years old, so it kind of twisted her up, so she decides to do life by herself. So she starts making up a life of lies, and tries to balance them all out, and trust me, there are a few. She meets Jess, a star hockey player, in one of her classes when they are partnered up, and she doesn't care what he thinks of her, just that he does his share of the work. Of course, the manwhore is also complex, so they become friends, then she starts to fall for him, as he has a big heart. And that about sums up what I'm going to give away. Now, first of all, it took me a bit to become invested in this story, as I kind of stayed confused for the beginning parts of it. Plus, with all of Eleanor's stories, I still stayed confused at times, and please remember, this is ONLY MY TAKE on this story. And Jess made me want to choke him at times, and yet, I still loved him somehow. I definitely enjoyed Scarlett Hopper's original story line when it comes to the sports star boy meeting the tortured soul girl. And somehow, my heart always felt for Eleanor throughout, as I could feel her pain seep through my kindle. Now, the cast of secondaries were highly intriguing, and added some more depth to the story, so I would like to see them get their own stories. I certainly want to see what's in store for this series, so for now, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Lots of Story...

In Scarlett Hopper's debut novel, Brief Encounters, she gives her readers quite the story of lies, love and loss. While I wasn't a instant fan of either character, they did tend to grow on me quickly.

Eleanor is a bit of a little girl lost. After encountering more tragedy than a sixteen year old should, she up and left Jersey for New York to try and make it on her own. Hooking up with her friends cousin, Eleanor finds herself working in one of the oldest professions around.

Living a life of lies isn't easy and until Eleanor gets partnered up with Jess, a star hockey player in her English class, she never worried abut the lies catching up to her. Due to the fact that Jess is a known manwhore, Eleanor isn't too worried about what he thinks of her, just that he better pull his weight on the project.

Like you would expect, Jess isn't anything Eleanor thinks he is and she starts to fall for the guy. Same goes for him. Sure, they try the friends thing first, but as we all know, that never seems to work out and they try to become more.

I didn't get a real sense of chemistry between these two. They went from hating each other, to best friends pretty quickly. They never delved into each others lives, which was odd, but naturally made the curve ball towards the end of the book that much more dramatic.

The book was well written, however a bit draggy at some parts. It was alright already, you like each other now get together and stay together for heaven's sake. Along with Eleanor and Jess, we are introduced to each of thier friends and significant others, which helps to bring the story to life. Brief Encounters is the first of the Encounters Series and I liked it enough to come back for more.

I received this book from the author herself, and I am definitely not disappointed. It’s so refreshing to read a book where the girl + guy don’t fall in love after an hour of knowing each other. Friends to lovers, with secrets slowly surfacing and a small bit of drama is just the type of book i enjoy. I guessed 2 things that happened in the book, which usually irritates me because i love to be proven wrong, but I wasn’t upset one bit. It was more of a “yes I was right!!” moment. I loved each & every character, from the main to secondary ones. I wouldn’t mind reading companion novels of each other person as well! I’m pretty excited to see what book 2 is about, and I can’t wait to read it!

I loved this book.

I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange of an arc.

I was quite blown away with this debut book by Scarlett Hopper. This book had alot of elements of a good book. It starts of with a bang, which is what pulls me into a story.

"I've always been a good liar, I guess you could say it runs in my blood'

We are introduced to Eleanor Ivy right at the beginning and we know there is something she is hiding. She is a strong heroine who has endured some very tragic times. the events change her into a closed off person who doesn't let people in. She does work a job which she is not very proud of, but, hey it pays the bills!!

Enter Jess Parker, now he's the best part of this story. He is one of the sweetest heroes I've read about. He's a breath of fresh air from your usual damaged ones. He isn't just another college manw***e, he is the friend and lover everyone wants! I just loved him and I felt he was the light to Eleanor's darkness.
I need me some Jess Parker in my life. He is an absolute book boyfriend!

The story moves at a steady pace, it takes us on a beautiful journey from friends to lovers, to betrayal and pain. I felt the pain which Eleanor and Jess went through and my heart broke for them.

The only issue I had with this book was that we didn't get an extended epilogue. I so want to see Eleanor and Jess say 5 years from now! Scarlett Hopper, hope you're listening!!

I liked the supporting characters and hope some of them get books. Nick really intrigued me and I really wish we get to read more about Jess and Eleanor over the years!

Brief Encounters (The Encounters Series, #1) by Scarlett Hopper

"Amanda, Eliza, Eleanor. Three names. Three Completely different people, yet I've embodied them all. Which one is the real me, you may ask? Well, Let's just say I'm still trying to figure that out."-Eleanor/Amanda/Eliza

WOW - Just WOW! This was such an amazing story and I am pretty blown away with it being a debut novel. Scarlett Hopper just made my "Read Everything By This Author Watch List"

description

This story has such a great flow and never really had any "pause" moments. You know when it's time for you to go to bed because you have a one-year-old who gets up early. So you are waiting for a "boring" part in the book to stop reading. Yeah one of those kinds of "pauses parts". Well let's just say it's 1:00 am right now and I just finished this book and HAD TO WRITE THIS REVIEW - LIKE NOW!

Jess, Jess, Jess. *shaking head*
I spent a good portion of this book pretty mad at you, and almost stopped reading because of you and your "manwhore" ways (& Eleanor wasn't a saint either). BUT you were kinda like those "Pitt-bull dog fighting rescue" videos you see pop up on Facebook. Even though its totally breaking your heart to watch - you just can't look away - Therefore I couldn't stop reading and I'm glad I didn't because the ending was so worth it! Eleanor was quick-witted and an ACTUAL strong heroine for me. She is a young girl who has already faced so many tragedies and still came across as strong. When life gives you lemons. Make lemonade.
description

Jess and Eleanor's friends to lovers story was very emotional. I loved seeing their friendship grow and the level of trust be formed. This book had so much to offer - Angst. Betrayal. Humour. Sexy Hero. Witty Heroine. Awesome Supporting Characters. Interesting Story Line. Steamy Sex Scenes.

"Please Jess," I beg. "I can't watch you walk away from me, from us. "-Eleanor

"Then close your eyes, Eleanor."-Jess

"I'm a person, Jess. A fucking human being and I make mistakes!" I yell. "Stop putting me on this pedestal and thinking I can do no wrong because it makes it a lot worse when I fall off."-Eleanor

EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER.

I honestly can say I can't wait for for the rest of the series to be written and released. There are a *few* characters I really want to know more about. I'm really excited to see what Scarlett Hopper releases next.

So I didn’t realize that it was the author’s debut novel until after I finished reading. Well done! I enjoyed the heck out of it. Which is a pleasant surprise when starting a book written by an unfamiliar author.

First, WOW, did the story’s prologue do its job! Immediately, I needed to know why the main character, Eleanor, felt like she had different identities attached to different names. And I couldn’t keep from turning pages to uncover the answers.

Eleanor was dealt a grim hand from the beginning of the story. She was forced to live a double life, keeping her true self-locked from anyone who might discover her secrets. The only person she trusted was her roommate and best friend, Vivian. All she wanted was to leave her past behind, and pay the bills. That is, until Jess Parker came in and sat next to her in class. Naturally, she didn’t want anything to do with the school’s infamous playboy, but she had no choice when they were paired together for a class project.

While she tried to keep him at arms length, he became determined to break her barriers. After a beautiful and unexpected friendship developed, he started stirring feelings inside of her that she refused to acknowledge. The closer they got, the closer the dam guarding her secrets threatened to burst. Chapter by chapter we get to piece together all the fears that haunt her everyday and influence her choices. Eventually, she is faced with the reality that her two separate lives threaten to collide.

The author did a fantastic job immersing us into the mind of Eleanor. We get to witness significant character growth as she faces every new challenge thrown her way. The story also focuses on showcasing the strength in true bonds of friendship, as well as how honesty, with yourself and the people you love, can set you free.

The only drawback for me was that it did have a few slow moments that I felt were unnecessary, because the story was already doing a great job of keeping us hooked. Luckily, it didn’t stop me from reading way into the night to get more answers, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Overall, I enjoyed the read and can’t wait to see what Scarlett has in store for us next!

I received an ARC from the author in return for an honest review. I am grateful for the opportunity, thank you!

Brief Encounters is Scarlett Hopper's debut novel and the first book in her Encounters series. Since this was the author's first book I had no specific expectations going in, but I have to say that I really enjoyed the character development in both the main characters, Eleanor and Jess, as well as the secondary characters. I have always been a fan of a good new adult college romance and this one defiantly surprised me.

This story captured my attention right from the beginning and with so many unexpected twists and turns thrown in it kept me engaged until the very end! I have to admit that it took me a moment to connect with Eleanor even though the book was actually told in her POV. However, when she and Jess got close I found out just how much I actually liked her. She is certainly one of those characters that will grow on you and by the time you've finished the book you will be craving more of her.

The book was pretty well written and for the most part I was intrigued by the storyline. I am really excited to see what the rest of this series has to hold and I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next! Readers if you love yourself a college romance with some surprising twists thrown in then I would check out Brief Encounters by Scarlett Hopper today!

I couldn’t put this book down, from the very first page I was hooked.
I absolutely loved Eleanor and Jess.
Jess especially as he was one of those boys in a book that you could easily fall in love with, a great book boyfriend. I rooted for them as a couple from the start.
The more I got to know Eleanor and her heartbreaking back ground the more I liked her, she was a really strong, brave young woman, with a huge vulnerability to her, which made her more likeable. A woman who was scared to love because of all the loss and heartache that she had suffered.
This story has really strong friendships in and they were really believable and easy to relate too.
It was full of little twists and turns but I honestly didn’t predict the main twist, when it happened I was absolutely gutted and heartbroken.
Throughout the whole book there was a great story, lots going on but not too much that it confused you but just enough to keep you wanting to read more,
so much so, that I was so busy reading this book and so into the story that I made my son late for his football match!
This book is up with some of my favourites and I would seriously recommend it to anyone who enjoys a love story. You will not be disappointed.

I was gifted this arc by the author in exchange for an honest review. i gave it 4 stars.

Let me just say im so happy it was well written. I love nothing more than reading a book and not have to go over and correct something in my head. So why did i give that rating; because it took me a couple days to really get into it. I honestly didn't think i would get into because of Els profession. It wasn't my cup of tea for sure. But i pulled through and let me say thank effin gegus "jesus". The start was very slow for me it didnt draw me in. But once you pass the first couple chapters it gets good. Once the story started to move along ugh i couldn't stop. I had to finish reading it in one sitting. I loved the build up to the relationship between Jess and Els. Of course something has to happen and i won't ruin it but i like more groveling. Jess was very easily forgiven and let me just say he was a grade a butt hole. I also would have liked there to be an epilogue.

But now I'm waiting for see who comes next. If my thoughts are correct I'm thinking it will be Winona and Nick. Ugh i hope so, can't wait for the next book to come out. Don't hesitate to give this a go. If you are looking for a HEA this is your book.

I absolutely loved this book!
I’ve never read anything by Scarlett before and when she offered me an ARC of this book how could I refuse. As soon as I started it I couldn’t put it down. If you want a cute friends to lovers romance this is the book for you.

Eleanor lost her mother and with losing her mom, she lost her father too. She took it as long as she could before she ran away. She left the only place she called home and never looked back. She went and started a new life with her best friends cousin. They did what they needed to do to survive.

Jess is the hot college go hockey player. He has his past with him too. He’s just another player who gets away with anything with that sexy smirk of his.

When they get partnered up in a class together. A friendship begins. They are the best of friends and everything is great until more feelings start. Then add secrets. Fathers. And ex’s and you’re in for a great read.

I just finished this book and I already want to read it again.
It has a little bit of everything you could want in a book. You’ll want to cry. You will laugh. You will swoon. You’ll feel heartbroken. You will get a little bit of it all.

I loved this book.

A bit different from what I expected from the blurb, Brief Encounters is a unique twist on the typical college romance. With twists and turns that had drama running high throughout this friends to lovers story I was constantly on an emotional roller coaster. I felt all the feels while reading this! From the love that blossoms between Eleanor and Jess to the tragic past that some are still trying to overcome this Book doesn’t slow down once.

Eleanor was such a unique character, strong, yet vulnerable she’s built walls around herself that are nearly impossible to climb. When paired with what she sees as a stereotypical jock she’s not expecting the close friendship that develops between them. As friendship turns into something much more both of their pasts begin to bring forth trials that will either make or break them.

Overall I enjoyed Brief Encounters. The romance was magnificent and the close group of friends created a tight knit family I adored. I personally felt at times there was just a bit too much drama even for all these characters had been through.

I was kindly given an arc of this book by the author. THANK YOU!!

Eleanor Ivy is a college student with a lot of mystery to her past.
Jess Parker is a hockey player playboy on campus.

What Happens when these two are paired up for a project for class?

The friendship these two develop in this book is so amazing. I was so caught up in their lives, I couldn't put this book down. Eleanor is slow to let anyone into her life except for her best friend and roommate Vivian. Jess is the kind of guy who just kind of worms his way into your life and breaks down walls. I loved watching their relationship progress to friendship. The mystery of everything in this book kept me glued to my kindle. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I also enjoyed all the side characters throughout the book. I'm excited to dive in to the next in the series.

This book is so much more than your typical NA college romance, and I loved every minute of it!!

I highly recommend this book! <3
I loved it, especially the fact that you can feel it is written with knowledge of reality around the characters. What I mean is, I am the age characters are and I understand them and feel that they are real, flesh and bones, which isn’t always what I feel with other na books. This one was exactly accurate with music in it and all the feelings and behaviour.
Above that the story is interesting and addictive. I have to admit there was one turn in action I was waiting for while reading and it didn’t disappoint me! 😅
I really loved this book, I loved the fact that it’s a debut and the fact that the writer is so young!
If I have to point something I didn’t like, it felt like the ending was wrapped up too quickly for me. But the feeling doesn’t change my opinion that this book is great! 👏
Last thing I have to say is in my opinion the romance in it is completely genuine and feels totally true.
And I’m waiting for more! 🤩

I loved this story, it was totally up my street! A great storyline full of romance, mystery, heartbreak and happiness. The characters are so engaging that I was instantly committed to learning more about them. They drew me in and made me want to be part of their friendship group.
Eleanor as a leading female is strong, fierce and independent whilst still being relatable. She doesn’t let anyone close to her and protects her secrets at all costs.
Jess is a womanising jock with a heart of gold and secrets of his own.

Brief Encounters is a great NA romance with secrets, friendship and love that’s well written and well paced. It features great characters and reminded me of Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, which is one of my favourite books.

I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Thank you to the author for providing a copy. All opinions are my own and provided willingly.

This story is so much more than the blurb leads you to believe. Told exclusively from Eleanor's POV, we are thrust into a world where she believes that secrets are necessary for her survival. After meeting Jesse Parker, guilt at how much baggage her past has weighed her down with prevents her from being totally happy. Taking a chance at being honest could ultimately ruin everything as her past, present & possible future collide. Accustomed to running when life got tough, she soon realises that it's a cowardly way of living.

"You cannot find peace by avoiding life." ~ Virginia Woolf

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to. The drama was the perfect complement to this angst-y friends-to-lovers romance. I definitely recommend this debut romance, and eagerly look forward to more of Scarlett Hopper's work.

Angst. Angst. Angst. Holy wowerssss! This book broke me a little and had me fidgeting because I wanted to know how things will fall into place.

The main character, Eleonor Ivy, went through things, terrible things and ahe somewhat just went through the motions, trying to get by. The whole time reading except one particular scene, I wanted to hug her. I felt her pain and how she’s coping. Then there’s Jess. Ugh, Jess. You are frucking dreamy but you made me crazy at some parts of the story.

I pegged this books to be a walk in the park. But hells yeah, it’s a crazy stint like walking in that mini mini rope. So if you want a mini heart pounding and mind wrecking then get this book. Ah the feeeels!

I went into this book thinking I know what’s going to happen. I read the synopsis and thought hmm yep I’ve read these kinds of books cool. Boy was I wrong, but in the best possible way. What a delight to pick up a new authors book and find it completely unpredictable! I started thinking ok I will read a couple of chapters before bed, NOPE!! I had to read it in one sitting. I absolutely loved the characters, each of their storylines ( really hoping this turns into a long series as it is the makings of at least 6 books ) I was totally engulfed in their world! I laughed, I got mad and I cried!! And I can not wait to read the next one!!

Eleanor Ivy is not one of those typical cookie-cutter characters. She is sarcastic, snarky, secretive, and a bit cynical. Shoot, she has more issues than Cosmopolitan. And when it comes to the charming hockey star, Jess Parker, she cannot help but feel the walls guarding her heart and her secrets beginning to crack. Deep down, she knows that she should not be catching feelings for this guy. After all, how could he possibly fall for a girl with so much baggage?

This is a debut from this author, and my work, she is certainly one to watch out for in the future. This is the story of Eleanor, who has a tragic past, and Jess who is the school playboy, and the love / hate relationship they have going. When Eleanor is forced to face her fears, will that be the last of their relationship? No spoilers; this is a definite must read, you will not be disappointed! This is an emotional story, with secrets, drama, mystery, and twists, which all had me hooked and intrigued throughout. I look forward to reading more of this authors’ work!

A good story however I felt it could have been shorter. There was a few slow bits where you were reading lots of of pages but nothing was really getting added to the story. From 70% onwards it really picked up pace and grabbed your attention. Eleanor was quite hard to relate to at beginning of the book because her personality was such that she kept everyone one and Scarlett managed to write her this way also. All in all I would recommend and would read more from this author in future.

3.5 STARS!

The cover is what first intrigued me about this book. There was just something about it the drew me in. When I first started reading the prologue I was hooked, which I took as a good sign. Then things slowed down. The story got a little bit draggy for me and the use of full names when referring to the males was a bit of a turn off. I put the book aside for a bit and then came back to it the next day because I hate leaving things unfinished.

This time around I was drawn deeper into the story. I could see how certain parts of the plot would play out it was just a matter of when it would happen. I am a huge love of angsty reads and this book is chalk full of it!! I was not disappointed at all in any of the twists and turns in Jess and Eleanor’s story.

Overall I enjoyed this story and how it unfolded. I would be willing to take a chance on other books by this author.
