The Prophet Joseph Smith organized the Relief Society in 1842, championed women, and gave them personal instruction at a time when women were barely acknowledged. Despite his own life being in turmoil, he made sure to give priority to the women of the Church. In this short booklet, Sheri Dew helps us understand what the Prophet Joseph would want us to know that women play a crucial role n the kingdom of God and that our divine capacity to understand things of the Spirit and the heart allow us to love, strengthen, and lift each other with charity.

About the author

Sheri Dew graduated from Brigham Young University. She served as second counselor in the general Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1997 to 2002. In March 2003 the White House appointed her a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. In 2002, Sheri Dew became president and CEO of Deseret Book Company.

Valuable Insights on Charity and Service, but Not Fully Aligned with My Needs

I give Oh, How We Need Each Other by Sheri Dew 3 stars. While the book has valuable insights, especially about charity as the Savior's defining attribute and how knowledge enables us to do more for Christ's work, some parts didn’t apply much to my current needs.

I appreciated the emphasis on how, with today's access to knowledge and technology, we can advance Christ's work like never before. However, the historical sections on the Relief Society didn’t feel as relevant to me, and some of the language was a bit elevated, as English is my second language.

I’d recommend this book as a quick read, particularly for Relief Society sisters and Priesthood leaders who want to understand the divine potential of this organization.

Thrilling encouragement for charity and unity

Framing the opportunity women have today in the light of lessons gleaned from foundational moments, Relief Society sisters are urged to enjoy greater power as they cultivate elevating characteristics and ennobling bonds with one another.

After hearing Sheri Dew two weeks ago I have been struck by her confidence in pursuing celestial covenants. Any who seek to lead in righteousness will benefit from the experiences and perspective she shares here.

Another little booklet I got at church for Mother's Day at some point. It was sitting in my to be read pile. I needed a quick read in between Thanksgiving day prep. On the back it says "We need each other's strength and compassion. We need to be able to lean on, learn from, and help each other along the path." (Sheri Dew) At the time it was written covid-19 was nowhere on the horizon but how true this is not only for women of the church but for all people in the world right now...we need each other.

Though Sheri always has insightful things to say, I was disappointed in this short book. It felt like a topic that could have easily been a full-length book, but instead she kept recommending a study of Joseph Smith's addresses to the early Relief Society. I would LOVE to read her in-depth analysis of each of those talks. Also, Sheri Dew's personal stories are what really make her books memorable for me, so I was disappointed to see a recycled story rather than new material.

In this pamphlet, Dew acknowledges without judgement that Sonia Johnson was opposed to the church’s position on the Equal Rights Amendment. It is brief: but yet, she states Johnson’s position as a matter of fact, without taking sides. Dew’s words for Mother's Day were inclusive for those who have children, and those who do not, with a distinct nod to Eliza R. Snow—another childless hero of Mormon women.

The Minutes of The Female Relief Society are also celebrated as Dew bears witness of the relevance these minutes have for all Relief Society sisters today. Reading this was truly a delightful surprise that fed my feelings that distinguish SISTERHOOD as the preferable, imperative concept for Mother’s Day.
