Nat Montgomery is an expert hider. With a promiscuous, volatile addict for a mother, she has long since perfected the art of concealing herself behind humor. An art history major in Washington, DC, with an internship at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, Nat receives a nineteenth-birthday gift from her beloved grandmother, Gigi, who raised her and who died six months previously. The gift is a laptop containing time-release video clips of Gigi’s revelations about Nat’s grandfather, murdered in 1964 when he worked for a secret racial reconciliation group that met after hours in the Smithsonian museums. The murderer was never found, and Gigi’s family always believed he abandoned her and her unborn child.

Knowing the hole Grandpa Bobby’s disappearance left in Gigi’s heart, Nat resolves to discover the truth of what happened to him. But when her roommate Cadence disappears after asking questions about the long-dead past, Nat fears Bobby’s killer is still a threat. Casting off her inclination to hide, Nat determines to find the person who kidnapped Cadence and who may well have killed her grandfather a half-century earlier.

This book caught my interest, and I didn’t realize when I started it on my kindle that it was YA or third in a series. It stands alone well and appeals to adults too. At first, I had a bit of trouble getting into the story, but soon the characters hooked me and I wanted to learn how it would all turn out. I’ve never been to the Smithsonian museums but enjoy reading about them. The museum plays a major part in this mystery. It also links with the past and a group who wants to take over the country. Intriguing tale with compelling incidents and characters of interest too. I enjoyed seeing how all the pieces fit together and the conflict resolved. I received a free copy with no obligation. All opinions are my own.

Her dear grandmother's posthumous request sets Nat Montgomery off on a quest to find out who murdered her grandfather, why, and where his remains might be. But Nat's questions stir up decades old hostilities among the people she works with at the Smithsonian Institute museums and soon, she doesn't know whom to trust.
Nat's irreverent habit of using humor to mask her fears often made me laugh. Her family issues kept me intrigued and the story kept me turning pages. This well-written book uses tie-dye for a clever historical twist. Along with humor, there are some heart-pounding moments and many chapters that will leave you scratching your head.
A good read with a good message.

Great Series! Great Stand Alone!

This is the third and last in a series of books with multiple time periods. I love the premise of the past effecting the present. Just when I started to wonder about something in the past, there would be a jump back to explain. Very smooth and easy to follow, but exciting!

Nat doesn't trust easily. She hasn't had reason to, and the gift she receives from her grandmother after she passes away doesn't make it any easier. The mystery in her family's past collides with the present, creating a life and death situation for Nat and her friends. The result is a story that keeps you turning pages and asking yourself who can be trusted.
