Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.
Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.
Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books.
Jansson's Moomin books have been translated into 33 languages.
Although I do love this series of moomin cartoons which have been enlarged from the originals and coloured, I prefer the stories that focus on the magical other world the moomins inhabit rather than some, like this one, that reflect on the problems of our world.
This adventure sees the moomins visit an expensive holiday resort and mix with the rich and famous, as expected they find that a glamorous life isn’t as fulfilling as they hoped and they discover they did enjoy their old life more than they thought.
Whilst this was a fun and amusing adventure with high action and plenty of moomin style philosophical musing, I do prefer to escape to Moominvalley rather than see them in our world.
It's as always really cute, it's the Moomins I expect nothing else! It's also got elements of comedy which I really love and comic sketches are adorable. Moomins will always have my heart!! 💓
Another fantastic little story. The Moomins hit up the ritzy Riviera and spend some time in a fancy hotel mistaken for being eccentric Millionaires they rack up huge debts they have no ability to pay for.
My partner was quite insistent it was a lovely story, despite my questionable look over Moomin-Papa going through a glass window as a sort-of-end-paper at the start. On completion, when I again looked at him with the same expression, he told me it was the same good vibes he got from digesting Simon Hanselmann’s work... We have very different descriptions when it comes to vibes, clearly!
I’m going to be sitting up all night now anxious over the naivety regarding hotel bills, some of the gender comments, the excellent commentary on wealth and privilege... I’ve honestly come out of this ‘lovely’ experience incredibly stressed by the explored themes - which is a compliment to the effectiveness of said exploration!
With all the excitement online about the movie, I decided to read some of the series! I love the Moomins. I think they were what I was feeling so nostalgic for the first time I saw a Ghibli film. It's the same vibe of gentle freedom and beautiful nature and loving family.
Okay, after reading this I'm concluding I preferred the structure of Moomin and the Golden Tail (the only other Moomin book I've read thus far, for context). I was quite humoured by all the hijinks and escapades in this one but the overall book felt a lot more one-note with its characterizations and its plot. Didn't feel I got enough of Moomin himself here either.
