Why would a rich girl become a prostitute? Three years ago Joy refused to sleep with an ex boyfriend. When he committed suicide, her guilt was enormous. To punish herself she opted to serve as a prostitute for three years. How far would you go to protect your child? Cora loves her convict husband despite - or because of - his bad boy ways. But now that he's back in her life, she has their daughter to consider. Is a faulty father better than no father at all?
A serial killer… A serial killer who murders women and displays their bodies dressed in a white sheet with a fencing mask covering the face. Who will be next?
Yvonne Walus writes crime fiction set in South Africa because she believes it’s a misunderstood country. South Africa means a lot of things to a lot of people: lions in long yellow grass, diamond mines, apartheid, Nelson Mandela, rugby. All of those images are right, yet none of them - according to Yvonne - are representative of the country or its people. None of them describe what it’s like to live in South Africa, both in the 1980s and today. Yvonne would like her readers to smell the red dust of the continent and to fall in love with Africa the way she did when she first set foot there as a teenager. Through her books, Yvonne shows that South African people, despite the recent history of discrimination, are no different to any other people. Not worse, not better. Just people.
3.5 Stars. Zero Zimmerman, a Probationary Police Officer, is thrown into her first big case when a serial killer starts targeting prostitutes. Set in the seedy underbelly of Auckland NZ, Zero finds she is more connected to the case than she first thought. This Thriller has a cast of unlikeable characters and has quite a dark storyline. I received a digital copy of Serial Wives. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my copy of Yvonne Eve Walus's book.
Serial Wives: Introducing Zero Zimmerman is a book written by Yvonne Eve Walus, a polish novelist and poet. It is addressed to young adults and adults because it contains violence, strong language and explicit sexual scenes. It is about a serial killer who murders women. The scary and dark thing is that women are found dressed and with a fencing mask in their faces. The story is narrated in third person. The language is stilted and the reading flows easily. I found myself drawn into the novel and caring for the characters. Yvonne is a fantastic writer and created a really interesting book and addictive. The ideas are very clear. The action is solid, suspenseful and creepy. It makes you sense all the feelings on the emotional spectrum from shock to disbelief to frustrated rage and back. Then you stay up way too late on a work night trying to finish it. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this kind of reading! It is a great work to explore!
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
I was immediately intrigued by the description of "Serial Wives" by Yvonne Eve Walus. A guilt ridden girl, a mother with a husband who recently returned home but is still a bad boy, and a serial killer who murders women and displays their bodies dressed in a white sheet and puts a fencing mask on them. This description had me hooked. Unfortunately, I did not feel connected to any of the characters. I did not find myself rooting for them to succeed or survive. I did not hate them nor was I actively hoping any of them failed or died. I just was not sympathetic toward them. I found the story to be all over the place, leaping from one person to an other. From the beginning you knew all of the characters were going to be connected. The "reveals" did not seem like reveals. The book seemed very long. When I finished, I was surprised to see if was, according to Goodreads, only 204 pages. I think the story was ok and would give it 3 stars. Yvonne Eve Walus has written 13 books but I do not think I will add any to my "want to read" list.
Since middle school, I've loved shows like NYPD Blue, Homicide: Life on the Streets, and later on Criminal Minds and CSI. I'm also a huge fan of true crime shows like Forensic Files. That's why I feel confident when I say that this novel was so well written.
Walus does an incredible job at the details of the story. She knows the whys and hows of murder. You can tell she's not just writing based on crime dramas she's watched, but that she's honestly researched the topic of serial killers and motives. This book was so addictive. I cannot wait to read the next one. I want to see what happens to Zero and Jackson and what the next storyline will be.
If you love crime dramas and true crime shows, you're going to LOVE this book! I highly recommend it!
REVIEW: The storyline is pretty interesting. It starts off at a nice pace but slows down in the middle then again rises itself. The moment where I had thought that there is nothing much to the story, a boom happened and left me amazed. Characters are well developed and all the characters are given well-deserved space and we get an insight into their mind. Reading difficulty is very low. No loopholes are left in the story. There are various sexual descriptions in the book that may not be comfortable for you. Other than that, it was a really good read and I just couldn’t put it down. It is a short book (under 250 pages) and I definitely recommend it to all the mystery lovers out there!
I really enjoyed reading every single page of this book. Unlike other writers, Walus wrote this book in an accessible, easy-to-read style. The story really reached out to touch my heart..
"Serial wives" is a story about love, loss, family and second chances. This author is very talented and I'm sure you will keep smiling as you read this beautiful book. I can't wait to read more of this author in the near future. I want to see what happens to Zero and Jackson and what the next story line will be.
What more can I say?? This is indeed a book with a serious message. I would recommend it to anyone. THANKS!
This is one of the best books I've read in quite awhile! Great characters, great development of the story. Lots of other stories are great reads but don't always put all the pieces together like this one does, one by one. I also loved how the reader is made aware of every character's full story, something you don't always get in other reads, especially after you think the mystery is solved. Highly recommend!
I love police procedural books and shows. I found this book highly entertaining and addictive. I'm already looking forward to the next one in the series! I enjoyed Zero and Jackson and feel that they will be fantastic reoccurring characters in a series. If, like me, you enjoy thrillers, crime dramas and true crime shows, you'll love this book!
I would like to thank Yvonne Walus, BooksGoSocial and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

An excellent story. This is a stunning crime thriller set in the seedy underbelly of Auckland, New Zealand. Yvonne Walus does not disappoint in her latest book. It is edgy and fast-paced, with believable characters.
This book is about different people and what they feel the "need to do" to feel better about themselves. I really didn't like the bouncing around much, but the 'short stories' inside where pretty good. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Reading Deals.
I love police books and shows. This book was so addictive. I cannot wait to read the next one. I want to see what happens to Zero and Jackson and what the next storyline will be. If you love crime dramas and true crime shows, you're going to LOVE this book! I
"Serial Wives" takes place in New Zealand. This book is a thriller and completely full of suspense. The author's voice is pleasant and the writing easy to follow. A satisfying read.
Joy’s family is well off, why would she turn to a life of prostitution? Three years ago, she left her world behind after her ex-boyfriend committed suicide after she rejected him.
Cora loves her husband, convict or not, he’s the one for her however, he’s a bad boy in more ways than one. How far is Cora willing to go to keep her child safe?
Someone is out there, murdering women and staging the bodies. The police are on the hunt for a serial killer, can they race against the clock before the next victim appears?
📚
Serial Wives hooked me from the very first page, I spent most of my day on the couch with this book until I finished it. The story is told via multiple POVs between a police officer, two women in the sex trade and “the Business Man”. This story was GOOD, strong/interesting police procedural, great characters who are likable and unlikable at the same time, insane story with twists that blew my mind and great writing. I was kept on my toes the entire book, just as I was starting to guess, something new was thrown in that blew up every theory I had. Highly recommend this book to any crime lovers!
I found this title sitting in my Archived, not downloaded section of netgalley and after reading the description I had to purchase it!
Huge thank you to netgalley and booksgosocial for this book in exchange for a review.
