i’ll start with honesty. this book lived on my bookshelf for way longer than it should have before i finally picked it up. i didn’t realize it was structured the way it was — seven short daily reflections — but it ended up being exactly what i needed where i’m at right now. heart not hype wasn’t super theologically fluffy, and it wasn’t dense or intimidating either. it was reflective in a simple and very relatable way about what it looks like to actually surrender your life to christ and live that out day to day.

the writing is straightforward, it most definitely was written for middle schoolers or high schoolers, and honestly that’s part of what made it helpful. there’s something refreshing about looking at faith through a really simple lens, especially when sometimes christian books either get super complex or full of hype language that feels more emotional than real. this one didn’t feel that way.

that said, i did notice a few things that might make some readers pause. because it is so simple, it didn’t dig deep into theological nuance. it sometimes leaned on broad encouragement without grappling with harder questions about faith, suffering, or the complexities of spiritual growth. some internet discussions i’ve seen about the book sort of treat it like it has deep doctrinal weight, but really the strength here is more in its daily reflective tone than in theological rigor.

in the end i super enjoyed getting to sit with these reflections and apply them to my life. it won’t be one of those books i recommend to everyone, and it probably won’t be a lifelong favorite, but for someone early in their faith journey or even just in a season where they need simple grounding reminders, this was a really welcome read. i'd say it’s most useful when read slowly and thoughtfully, letting each day sink in rather than racing through it.

if you’re looking for something practical, gentle, and reflective rather than complex or dense, this might be a good one to pick up.

Beyond the Butterflies: A 7-Day Roadmap to a Real Relationship

If you’ve recently decided to follow Jesus, you’re likely riding a wave of excitement. But let’s be honest: emotions fluctuate, and "spiritual highs" eventually meet the reality of Monday morning. In Heart Not Hype, Tom Henderson provides the perfect "day-after" manual for new believers who are wondering, “Okay, I’m in... now what?”
The Core Message: Pulse Over Pomp
Henderson cuts through the noise of modern "performative" faith. As the title suggests, this book isn't about maintaining an emotional frenzy or following a rigid set of rules to look the part. It’s about cultivating a genuine heart-connection with Christ.
Why This Book Works
The 7-Day Sprint: It’s not an intimidating 400-page systematic theology book. It’s a manageable, week-long journey designed to build immediate momentum.
Practical Foundations: It tackles the "Great Questions" of the faith—understanding your new identity, how to talk to God, and how to navigate your daily life with a new perspective.
Relatable Tone: Henderson writes like a friend grabbing coffee with you, making deep spiritual truths feel accessible and grounded.
Who Is This For?
"Our walk with Christ is not about hype—it's about heart."
This book is a must-read for:
New Believers looking for a solid starting line.
Mentors who want a simple, effective tool to walk through with a friend.
The "Stuck" Christian who feels like their faith has become more about routine than relationship.
Final Verdict
Heart Not Hype is a refreshing reminder that the Christian life isn't a sprint fueled by adrenaline; it’s a lifelong walk fueled by love. It provides the "right foot" you need to start a journey that lasts.
