Why, oh why, can't we have believable moments of crisis?!
Once again, we get an engaging book, with delightful characters, that has a fatal flaw in the climax which takes it form a great story, to a mediocre one. I just don't understand why this author always seems to decide to change her characters in exactly the wrong way, mid-story, every time.
I have to admit that I get a bit irritated with this because I really liked the story, and I love these characters (when they are constantly written). But I never feel like I can end one of these books satisfied.
*****SPOILERS*****
Bart was raised by a man who was, at the very least, a survivalist, if not a prepper. Added to that, he says that he has military training, though his back story never mentions such, and he's spent years as the head of security for the Sentry. With all of that, why does his self-defence training not kick in until well after the fight to save Nico kicks in? Why did he have so much trouble in the fight, considering he is so week trained and they weren't? And most irritating, why in the world does Bart cladding responsibility for killing Jimmy when Alec was the one who stabbed him?! It makes absolutely no sense to me that he would do that!
Nico was a much stronger, better written character. But I have to ask where the whole dual Greek citizenship came from. His backstory says he was raised by a single mother and an absentee father. He considers that his Greek heritage helps him in his job to be exotic, but there was no indication of either of his parents being foreign nationals until Bart brought it up 70% into the story.
