Prequel to the Amazon #1 bestselling, THE HAUNTING OF HIGHDOWN HALL, by Shani Struthers.

What do you do when a whole town is haunted?

In 1899, in the North Yorkshire market town of Thorpe Morton, a tragedy occurred; 59 people died at the market hall whilst celebrating Christmas Eve, many of them children. One hundred years on and the spirits of the deceased are restless still, ‘haunting’ the community, refusing to let them forget.

In 1999, psychic investigators Theo Lawson and Ness Patterson are called in to help, sensing immediately on arrival how weighed down the town is. Quickly they discover there’s no safe haven. The past taints everything.

Hurtling towards the anniversary as well as a new millennium, their aim is to move the spirits on, to cleanse the atmosphere so everyone – the living and the dead – can start again. But the spirits prove resistant and soon Theo and Ness are caught up in battle, fighting against something that knows their deepest fears and can twist them in the most dangerous of ways.

They’ll need all their courage to succeed and the help of a little girl too – a spirit who didn’t die at the hall, who shouldn’t even be there…

This novella is a ghost story with an element of mystery.

A North Yorkshire market town overshadowed by a tragedy that happened in 1899, killing 59 people. The town hasn’t been the same ever since. At the request of a local resident, two psychics, come to the town a hundred years after the accident to see if they can make a difference.

I found the focus on the past quite heavy going, as it was such a heart breaking tragedy that I can imagine must have had a huge impact on the town at the time. I could feel the energy of grief and misery amongst the spirits. The interaction between modern day psychics and spirits of the past was both touching and emotional. I even had tears in my eyes at one point.

Although this is set around Christmas, it could easily be read any time of the year. I recommend this to fans of ghost stories and paranormal fiction.

I would like to thank the author for a copy of this book, via THE Book Club (TBC) on Facebook, in exchange for an honest review, and wish her great success with this book.

Review: EVE: A CHRISTMAS GHOST STORY (a Psychic Surveys Series Prequel) by Shani Struthers

I had already purchased the first two books in this series, but had I not, this prequel would certainly convince me to acquire them. EVE is a poignant story with a knockout impact. It's nearly Christmas Eve, 1999, in the tiny economically-depressed village of Thorpe Morton in Yorkshire. Not only is a new millennium approaching; so is the centennial of the village's most tragic event: the deaths of 59 adults and children at the market hall, on Christmas Eve 1899. The town has never recovered, and that's only partially due to the tragedy. Many lives were lost, but the continuing oppression of the village is mostly due to the negative energy entities which have fed there for a century.

A couple of psychics head up to Yorkshire to investigate disturbances at a site where a great tragedy happened 100 years ago.

Eve: A Christmas Ghost Story is a sort of mash-up of Halloween and Christmas. It takes place during Christmas, but the feeling of the book leans more toward the spoopy, rather than Christmas cheer. Although, xmas comes into play by the end. So really, you could read this during either holiday. I chose now, because I was given a review copy by the narrator and felt like I shouldn't sit on it for months while she's waiting on a review.. Having said that, you're still getting an absolutely honest review out of me, because that's how I roll.

First off, it's a good story. I'm not into psychic stuff, but I still got caught up in this story. I do like a good mystery or detective story, so I was interested to start with. It's a credit to the writing that I stuck with the book even when it turned out that the mystery aspect wasn't particularly strong. No clues had to be sleuthed, no murder weapon unearthed, and no evil-doer unmasked. Paranormal activity is where it's at with Eve, as I assume is the tendency of the Psychic Surveys series. I've never read one before, but after this pleasant experience, I'd be happy to read more.

Heather Tracy's narration is top-notch. She handles all ages, genders and a variety of accents with ease. I don't think I've listened to her before, but I really enjoyed her lovely voice. Her name's on my "narradar" now.

Eve: A Christmas Ghost Story was the last book I read in 2015 and it was the perfect book to end the year with! This story takes place in a small Yorkshire town where a horrible tragedy occurred on Christmas Eve 100 years ago. So it's not a sweet holiday romance. It's a somewhat dark supernatural yet emotionally touching story. Eve is the prequel to the Psychic Surveys series, which is now a must read for me!

We get to know the two main characters, who are psychics, as they get to know each other. They were both very likable women. The author gave such a great description of the town, it's townspeople and inside buildings, I felt as if I knew it. I could imagine what it was like from it being so well written. She writes the emotions you will feel with her words.

You will feel the sadness that has lingered in this town for 100 years. There are some very emotional moments that brought tears to my eyes. Will Theo and Ness be able to help the the ghosts pass on so the town can be happy once again? Things that go on will have you wondering if it will be possible.

I was originally drawn to the cover and title when I saw it on NetGalley. A Christmas ghost story sounded like my kind of book. And I read it during the week of Christmas. But anyone who loves a superb supernatural story would enjoy this no matter what time of the year it is. It does not disappoint.

This book was hard to put down and drew me into the storyline from the very beginning. Definitely a must read. I really loved this story so it is a book that I highly recommend!

* I received an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I haven't read a good ghost story for I don't know how long, so when THE Book Club asked for volunteer readers/reviewers for Shani Struther's book 'Eve' I requested it straight away.

I loved it. The author creates a spooky menacing atmosphere in the town the Christmas forgot- or should that be the town that tried to forget Christmas? The characters of Ness and Theo are rounded and interesting. I really wanted to know more about them.

'Eve' is a prequel to the Psychic Survey series of books. Sometimes prequels seem too short or rushed but this is very satisfying read. I'm now off to download the Psychic Survey books as this has got me in the mood for being scared some more!

In 1899, minors & owners were at each other’s throats. Cut costs/raise profits.
12/24/1899, North Yorkshire, Thorpe Morton (town). A fire had broken out.
59 people died at the market hall while celebrating Christmas Eve.
There had been a mass stampede of PPL.
The list of the deceased names had been recorded.
12/24/1999, Sussex county Lewes (town). 2 psychic/clairvoyant investigators Theodora “Theo” Lawson & Ness Patterson were asked to investigate the matter.
What did Theo ask Sue, & Barbara (Adelaide’s BFF) about?
Aunt Jean (40+) had died of cancer.
12/24/1999, Ness was leading the séance.

Alice Field, Walter Field, Ada Letch, Arthur Letch, Mary Letch, Ann Letch, Bert Letch, William Howes, Margaret Howes, David Allen, Paul Gaines, John Tattersall, Mabel Tattersall, Ellen Corsby, Edward Corsby, Joseph Roberts, & Harriet Roberts had appeared/vanished.
Ruth Roberts-Carter (mother) had passed away. Edna Carter (79) followed on 12/24/1999.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written paranormal book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great paranormal movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free author; crooked cat publishing; BookFunnel; Amazon Digital Services LLC.; book

I wish I could have read this on a dark wintry night in the run up to Xmas Eve as it is a truly atmospheric book and I really felt like I was exploring the haunted town of Thorpe Merton in North Yorkshire along with psychic investigators Theo and Ness. Perhaps I will read it again at Xmas, snuggled up beside a log fire in a candlelit room, just to reacquaint myself with this otherworldly winter’s tale. The storyline was kept very real and presented an authentic account of psychic and spiritual occurrences; particularly when referencing the troubled souls of spirits who refuse to vanish. It is a compelling read with restless spirits hiding in dark corners and the depression of the town and its people is felt deeply. At the centre of this story is the market hall, where a terrible tragedy occurred over 100 years ago; a tragedy that the townspeople and those who haunt them cannot forget. Although this is a standalone book, I understand the author has written a whole series and I now feel encouraged to buy all of them; it really is that easy to get hooked on Shani’s books. Not only was it an extremely well written account of a dark tragic tale where everything felt accurate and true to life, it was really fascinating; a truly haunting experience that one cannot forget easily. My heart was in my mouth at times; especially on that dark creepy stairway where something sinister gathers. Theo and Ness were very brave, memorable characters that I couldn’t help rooting for and I look forward to joining them on more spiritual adventures in the future. An absolute gorgeous cover means this is a book that will feature prominently in my bookcase. Definitely one for the Xmas stocking. Can’t wait to read more of the author’s books.

Another excellent read with this prequel to the equally good Psychic Surveys series from Shani Struthers and her different look at the supernatural and afterlife. Set during the week prior to Christmas 1999, we meet Ness and Theo (from Psychic Surveys) and how they investigate a tragedy in which 59 people died on Christmas Eve 100 years previous. The bleakness, sadness and depression surrounding the town is brilliantly captured in the initial stages as they stay in arguably the most downbeat guesthouse in Northern England!! The owner, Edna, has her own ghosts (literally) and demons and her past is largely at the heart of the story and the significant change in her character throughout is oddly heart-warming.

The resolution of how the tragedy unfolded is very cleverly done and I had goosebumps more than once as I finished the book well into the small hours of the night. It also leaves the reader thinking, especially as at least one question is left unanswered!! Equally though, I loved it when the the two main characters chat about maybe starting up a mainstreet business investigating hauntings!

A worthy addition to the series, and a reasonably quick read which actually gets you thinking about the unknown and afterlife.

Many thanks to Shani Struthers and TBC for a copy of Eve in return for an honest review.

I don't remember ever really reading a ghost story so I was intrigued to begin this book. I have to admit that it did take me a little while to get into this book, but once I did, I couldn't put it down.

Theo and Ness are mediums, who have been called to Thorpe Morton, a mining town, where it seems everywhere is haunted.

The tale that follows is one of a frenzy of emotions. The developing relationship between Theo and Ness, the guarded feelings of the townsfolk, the desperation of the spirits and how they all link up to an amazing culmination at the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it even brought a tear to my eye at the end. Definitely recommended.

This was a great novella. I had never heard of this title or author before. I have to admit, it was the cover that got my attention. 2 psychic investigators, Theo Larson and Ness Patterson travel to a small town in England where they are called in to help. The entire town seems to be haunted. It all seems to stem from a tragic event that took place 100 years before on Christmas Eve. 59 townspeople are killed, mostly children. I read a lot of horror/ ghost stories and have to say that this seemed very believable. It was very well cone. I hear that this is a prequel to a series, and I most definitely will look for the series!

This is outside my usual genre, downloaded on recommendation from THE Book Club (TBC) and because I liked the cover.
Well, all I can say is that I really enjoyed it. I had to put aside my own views on the while mediumship/ability to communicate with the dead but once I dealt with that I had a good time.
This is an enjoyable, spooky, different Christmas story, well worth reading!

Shani has done it again! This time we met Theo. So, we have Ness and Theo working together to help the victims of a 100-year-old tragedy in a small town in the North East of England, as well as a couple of 'side stories' that need explanation.
Psychic Surveys is about to become a reality! The great thing is, I can still recall each of the books I've read in this series, since the Venetian. That only happens when I find a good author!
I'm not sure that I'm reading these Shani Struthers books in the right order but I really don't care! I am thoroughly enjoying them and aim to carry on. Tomorrow, I start 'Rise to Me' .... Be back soon.

A ghostly mystery!

I have always enjoyed ghost stories but to have a psychic connection with it definitely gets my vote! You are completely drawn in from the beginning, which was 1899 and then moves 100 years on to 1999. The two main leads are Theo and Ness who deal with difficult spirits so to speak! The main characters are great as Theo is a grandmother in her fifties and Ness in her thirties. For me to have them at different ages such as they are works really well. The story itself takes place at Christmas time when disaster strikes and life's are lost that includes children. Help comes along in the form of Theo and Ness who need to discover what happened . A very good read if you like ghost stories and one I would recommend.

An excellent ghost story

I'm so glad I discovered this series and had read the first book in the series before I read this one and it worked out fine - I enjoyed them both immensely. Both are pages turners and great mysteries, and like real life, not simple. Thank you Ms Struthers for the entertainment, I look forward to reading the next book in this series!

A spooky story but a story you could believe is true. Shani has written a weaving tale of haunting, lost spirits & lost living, then rolled it together to this.
It's different in that all sides are written about and you get the whole story from each side.
Very good

Eve: A Christmas Ghost Story:A Psychic Surveys Prequel. Author Shani Struthers.

I came across Eve: A Christmas Ghost Story while checking my Facebook feeds and was very much drawn in by the book’s cover. It reminded me of an old spooky photograph that had been found in a forgotten place. So I thought why not give this book a try. I’m really glad I did. The story of those who died and was still holding on in the spirit world was heartbreaking. This book was also packed with very heavy emotions. And the character in this book were really captivating and leapt off each page. It’s very easy to get lost in each ones back story and feelings throughout.

The story itself is about Theo and Ness as they are asked to help in the town of Thorpe Morton, where years back a tragic advent took place at a Christmas party for miners and their families that left many people dead and the survivors and generations after with hurt, grief and anger. Now Theo and Ness has to spiritually battle against the darkness and lead those who are still afraid past the flames of their death and in to the light of the life after. Will they be able to help everyone before Christmas is over? Or will those souls still be stuck in a loop of fear and sadness? Read this emotional, but gripping book to find out.

I was in tears by the end, especially the scenes with Harriet, Edna and Ruth. They were really well written and each scene was very easy to picture in my mind. I could also feel the emotion of what was happening to them all. I thought Edna was quite a character. I loved how she spoke and her quiet, misunderstood way about her. I also loved the friendship between Theo and Ness, and the way Theo when dealing with the dark energy that a lot of the time fed into her fear of spiders did in the end see them in a much more harmless light.

If you have a strong phobia of spiders this book may not be for you. As it does have quite a few spidery type scenes.

The end of this book was so emotional and a little unexpected, but wrapped most things up nicely, although I hope there will be another book that answers the question I felt this book left me with by the end…

I would recommend this book if you enjoy reading stories with spirits and the supernaturally. And like great character with emotional scenes, mixed with hope that one day they would all find their happiness and be able to move on.

OPINION OF BOOK: Eve is well written, easy to read and entertaining. I was engrossed shortly after starting. The characters are dynamic and individual. I got a sense of how broken and down Thorpe Morton was when they got there. Eve is written in British English, just a warning for those who are used to American English. There isn’t much more to say about it, other than it was a great read and I look forward to more in the series.

DO I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK: Yes.

SPOILER SECTION (WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT): Thorpe Morton, small village that suffered a terrible tragedy one hundred years ago. The local miners were striking for safer conditions in the mines. The management offered an olive branch of sorts, they would throw a Christmas party for all the families, then the miners and management would meet to talk things out. All the miner’s, with their families, came to the hall on Christmas Eve. The festivities were held upstairs. There was only one staircase, it was steep and narrow, with a door at the bottom that opened inward, toward the stairs. When the party was in full swing, before anybody from management had shown up, an unknown voice yelled fire. The party halted, then panic ensued. People rushed for the stairs, somebody tripped, and people piled up at the bottom of the staircase. They were being crushed against the door. The people at the top could see what was happening and the people at the bottom couldn’t open it from the outside. But the worst part of all of this; those who died in that stairwell died in vein. There was no fire. It had been a horrible prank. The miner’s blamed management and the town became a bleak place. Even one hundred years later, the sorrow and anger hang over the town like a suffocating blanket. Theo and Ness, psychics, have been called in to help release the spirits trapped at the hall. When they arrive, they find out they are dealing not only with those but with parasitic spirits that are feeding off of all the misery created by the events of long ago. On the hundred-year anniversary of the party Theo and Ness go in to free the spirits and fight the strangle-hold the parasites have on them and the town.

I've read three of the Psychic Surveys series from Shani Struthers already, so I was thrilled when I won an audiobook of Eve: A Christmas Ghost. This is a prequel to the series, told from side character Theo’s point of view. I love Ruby, the main character in the the Psychic Surveys series, but fierce Theo is my favourite. I loved getting more of an insight into her story and that of fellow psychic Ness.

The tale begins in mid-December in a town devoid of any Christmas spirit. Thorpe Morton is a place where everyone is haunted by ghosts and the town’s tragic past.

Theo and Ness soon find that they are dealing with more than a simple haunting, resulting in some terrifying scenes.

I loved the growing relationship between Theo and Ness. The contrast between Theo’s strong personality and Ness’ quiet reserved nature worked brilliantly.

This is not only a ghost story, but also a mystery. The ending was sad, but also heartwarming. Like the other Psychic Survey books, this is about friendship and trust overcoming darkness.

The narrator’s accent added to the essence of this book. Her rich, warm accent suited the tale perfectly.

If you're looking for a heartwarming Christmas horror, give this a go.

I liked this book but it was a little slow for me. I love paranormal and ghost stories and this was a good book. 100 years ago a tragedy befell a small miner’s village. Now 2 psychic investigators, Theo and Ness, have been asked to come see if they can help. They aren’t sure how much they will be able to help until they arrive in the village. Shortly after arriving they realize how much the village needs their help but now the question is are they strong enough to give the people of village both living and dead the help they need. Something more than just the grounded dead is in the village. Both Ness and Theo are still getting to know each other and this could hurt what they are trying to do. Both ladies are determined to help both the living and the dead in the village. As they begin their work they realize more is going on than they know about. There is more than just the mystery than what happened in the Village hall to the miners and their family. Will the ladies be able to help everyone like they want or will the darkness prevail? This book was very well written and engaging however it was just a bit slow for me. The story has great characters that have depth to them. I am going to read another book in this series to give a fair shot as I didn’t dislike that book just wished it was a little more something. It is the first book I have read by Shani Struthers as well. I liked the characters and would like to read more about them which is another reason I plan on reading another book in the series. The book is good and I can’t pin point just what didn’t completely pull me in but I still recommend it to others. Just because a book isn’t for me doesn’t mean I don’t think others other won’t like it and that I won’t recommend it to them.
I was given this book in return for an honest review.
