The Miner's Song

Rate this book
Mining was Ramon’s life. The sight of silver ore sparkling in the light of his headlamp thrilled him. But on a night of celebration, Ramon’s life took a tragic turn, and he sank into a deep pit of despair and bitterness. Unable to do a man’s work, Ramon turned to begging on the streets. It was when he landed in the hospital that he heard the songs. Songs about Jesus and hope whispered, swelled, and swept through his lonely heart. Long after the last notes died away, he lay entranced. “God!” he pleaded, “I need this hope.” Then God sent Art Plett across Ramon’s path. The Miner’s Song is the wonderful story of two desperate souls and how a merciful God used one of them to bring grace, peace, and a song to the other.

This book has been on our shelf for several years. One of my children read it, but I always had it in the “some day” category. However, a patron of the library was asking recently about books by this author, so I decided to bump it to the top of the stack. Am I ever glad I did! This book is worth reading.
If this book were fiction, I would say that the author has done an excellent job of getting her main character almost to the point of freedom… and then another catastrophe would strike. Since it is a true story, though, all I can do is marvel at how God works in people’s lives.
I liked the juxtaposition of two stories. Ramon’s story takes up the most space in the book, but the story of Art Plett and his family (Art is the author’s father) is also quite important. Not only do we follow a Mexican man through his whole life, we walk with a Russian Mennonite family as they move from Canada to Mexico and back… several times! I found both stories almost equally engrossing.
If you like stories that read like novels, but are well-researched accurate accounts of real life, you will enjoy The Miner’s Song. This is a good book.
CONTENT WARNING: Ramon’s accident, when he lost his hand, and his recovery, are rather graphic.

Enjoyed reading this. My heart felt burden for those that have waited for years to hear about the light! This book was well written and gives a good picture of the life as missionaries and those that live in a poorer country
