Two seemingly-typical teenagers living in New Orleans - Magdalene Tanner and Eran Talor - want nothing more than to finish their senior year of high school quietly with easy classes, infrequent homework, and stealing time for forbidden affections. This proves to be a challenge when a threat emerges, because Magdalene and Eran have a secret history of safeguarding humans from hidden adversaries, and now they must shed their teenage personas to stop a secret war from reigniting.

I started rereading the series because I love it. And got so excited to see a new 4th book. But I had a very hard time on this last book understanding and relating to the new 4th book. The book started with telling you that our hero's have been given 2yrs of peace. So then how are the still in high school. The timelines just did not flow for me nor add up . how are Sean and Maggie still teenagers after 2yrs passing . they should be 20. Then for the last chapter to say a few month. Like I said hard to follow
First time i’ve ever given this series less than 5 stars. See? I’m not totally biased! 😜 I just… man, I was a little disappointed with this one.
It’s really hard to stay interested in a series that doesn’t have any consequences, you know? Like, everyone who “dies” in the series comes back because of the powers that Maggie has. So, it really takes away the excitement when you know that nothing is going to happen or could ever happen to any character ever. Like why do I care anymore? We all know now that regardless of what happens everything will turn out fine. So, that’s a huge negative on this series now, which makes say that it if that’s the direction that the story is going to go then it should’ve just stayed three books. There’s no angst anymore between Eran and Maggie because she can’t die and neither can he. I thought we DID need to see more of Lotharius. In the rest of the books he was just kind of this character that was mentioned and we saw once, which I found really strange since he’s supposed to be the main bad guy and he didn’t get any stage time. I thought the big fight scene was lacking big time and that Lotharius was taken care of too quickly, it was honestly kind of lame. I could have done without the government involvement and everything, I found their presence pretty annoying and unnecessary, considering that they didn’t need to be involved in any of the other books up until now. I was hoping to see more sensuality between Eran and Maggie, but it’s okay not every book needs to be SMUTTY and I actually appreciate a book keeping it PG for once. It’s just frustrating that they’re married and they never seem to have any time for each other.
BUT! I still absolutely adore this series, it’s in my top 5 for sure! Eran and Maggie are probably my favorite fantasy couple ever and I will die on this hill! I really wish this series could get more attention!

The fourth book, Defenders, came many years after the original three (3). It is a totally different storyline than the rest of the series (originally meant to be a trilogy, I believe). I find the storyline to be attempting a very dramatic and earth-shattering tale but Maggie and Eran are still trying to go to school… as teenagers? And SPOILERS,
now that we know that no one can really die, it loses it’s appeal. There is no permanency or purpose is killing characters just to bring them back to life… Every. Time. After all is said and done… they return to high school to finish their senior year. But they are married. And the whole government knows about them. Nope. I don’t buy it.
The third book in this, now series, ended the trilogy perfectly. It took me nearly to two weeks to get through this book. I stopped to read other books because it couldn’t hold my attention. Maggie and Eran’s story ended with Reckoning. I seriously doubt that I’ll be reading the next installment.
good enough to finish but not good enough to recommend
I wanted to finish the saga, but I felt like there were a lot of missing plot holes. A lot that I had to brush aside and not get hung up on so I could just finish the story.
