My love for you is like the moon's for the ocean, constantly pulling you in and then thinking maybe I don't need you. Only to realize that I am nothing without you ... -Megan Pollak The ocean is calling all of us whether we are a low tide, a hopeful shore, or a glimmering light in the abyssal darkness. In her debut collection of poetry, Megan Pollak intertwines the ocean's beating heart with themes that connect to nature's beauty and imperfections while encouraging humanity to embrace hope, love, and everything inbetween. Through poignant verse, Pollak provides a glimpse into the joys of finding love, the agony of losing love, and the personal growth that comes with embracing all our feelings. Voodoo shares poems from a fresh voice that illustrate the symbolism between nature and love and encourage all of us to never lose hope.
That was beautiful, so beautiful I'm pretty sure I highlighted almost every page. With every metaphor and every word I got lost in this book and lately that seems kind of rare. Wow, just wow.
What initially drew me to this book was the premise of poetry concerning the moon and the ocean. There was some of that in the very beginning and end, but the element was lost for a large portion of this collection. Many of the poems were very surface-level, while others just seemed out of place. A good portion of it felt as though it was written after a bad breakup... and not in the best (or most profound) way. Although a quick read, I'm sad to be so disappointed after having such high expectations (I've been waiting to read it since 2018! And that cover? Gorgeous!). There were a couple of poems that I personally found enjoyable/relatable/good (hence the 2 stars), but not enough to like this collection overall.
