This is the story of a baseball player and a fan of his baseball team. The ball he throws accidentally lands on her face and she is hospitalized. When he visits her at the hospital, they feel attracted to each other. He is not a man-whore or player. He is a decent guy. He just doesn’t date during the baseball season. However, after a few times he goes out with her, he realizes that he cannot fight with the attraction or his feelings for her and they start to date. Some paparazzi problems and some shocking revelations related to their past shake their sweet romance a bit but it can only cause an 8-day of separation. Soon, they go back to being sickly sweet.
So, as you can see, this is a love story as smooth as it goes. It is one of those sweet love stories with little angst. As they are both attracted to each other, they start dating, then comes kissing and having sexy times. I don't like it that easy or that simple. There is no banter, no push-pull, no sexual tension built or whatsoever. He wants it, she wants it and they have it. Just sweetness. The result? It bored the hell out of me!
I like some banter, some hot chemistry, some sexual tension built, and I like it when he has to work for it etc. This was a smooth, easy-peasy sweet love story that couldn’t hold my attention. I sometimes like it cute & sweet but this wasn’t the "cute & sweet" that I would love to read; this was "sweet but uninteresting" for me.
My type of "cute & sweet" would be “The Hating Game”. This book is just too simple & too dull for my taste. I like my sweet love stories to contain real good humor and cuteness; I want them to come with unique characters that are really special, not ordinary or mediocre. This book didn't do the trick, sorry :(
Writing & safety:
It is written in dual point of view and it is a short book of appr. 200 pages. Sadly, it didn't make me feel - I was so uninterested in their sweet world of romance.
Falling for the Rookie By Trish Williford (2020/06/08) Rating 3.5/5 Stars Disclaimer: All thoughts and opinions are my own. TW: death of loved ones, Manipulation
Falling for the Rookie By Trish Williford is book one in the Fangirl series. This story follows Melody Carrick who loves baseball. She usually has season tickets and ever home game since she is such a big fan of the sport. When a foul ball hits her in the face on the season opener day, the last thing she expects is that the rookie who hit the foul ball will visit her in the hospital.
Carson Lawrence is the rookie on the Blue Birds baseball team and when he meets Melody, he is instantly attracted to her, so a romance blooms from there. Unfortunately for Melody he has "no dating “policy during baseball season so they decide to be friends, but Carson can't stay away. When something from Carson’s past comes up, Melody must decide if her love for Carson is enough or if she's better off without him.
Okay so I really enjoyed this novel, it was such a fun and quick read. I loved reading about Melody's friendship with Lexi as well as Uncle Clay. I also really liked Ryan and Carson’s friendship as well as Carson’s relationship with his coach. This book was so funny and entertaining that once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down.
Unfortunately, this book suffered from the "not like other girls" trope. I found it unrealistic because I'm sure there are many girls out there that are able to eat in front of the person they are on a date with.
"One quality I find more attractive than anything else in a woman is when she isn’t afraid to chow down in front of me. Eat some meat, sweetheart. Throw that damn salad out to the rabbits. I like when a girl is confident enough to not care what I think of how much she eats."
It also suffered from repetition, I felt like there were many times where the characters said the same phrases over and over again and I felt like that could have been left out of the story.
“I know about your dating rule”
I feel like the author did not have to constantly remind us of the rule especially after it was mentioned one for two times.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a short contemporary sports romance. I can't wait to read the next books in this series.

Melody loves her baseball and attends all home game; little did she know that she was quite literally going to be part of action when she gets hit by a foul ball by the new rookie in the majors, Carson Lawrence. Carson can’t believe he’s hit a fan and can’t help but check on her in the hospital but what he doesn’t expect is for this beautiful young women to knock him off his feet. There is instant attraction and connection between them and all is seemingly going well until the past comes up and bites them both. Will Melody be able to move past what she’s learnt or will it prove to be the end?
“You have really pretty sparkly green eyes and a beautiful smile. And if you want me to be honest, I kind of dig the purple under your eyes.”
This was an enjoyable sport romance read with an unexpected turn that took this from just a sweet romance to a “OMG did not see that coming” plot twist. The story also had great lead characters and support characters which I could really root and cheer for so this made for an overall great read!
“You don’t date during baseball season, you can’t break your rule.” “I’ll just bend it a little, sweetheart.” I winked. I knew I shouldn’t push this and say just goodbye to her tonight, but I have a feeling that not seeing her again will not be an option.”
I loved Melody- she was such a wonderful young woman. Despite suffering through a tragic loss she has still managed to be a happy and kind young woman who wants to help others and just embrace life. Carson was a bit cocky (major baseball player though so can you blame him?) but not enough for him to come across as obnoxious. He had worked hard to get where he now was and you could feel his attention for Melody coming off the page; I loved how much he wanted Melody and how he was willing to ignore his no dating rule because he just knew Melody would be worth it.
“This isn’t casual, and I’m a fool to believe that I can keep it that way until October. She has gotten under my skin and I’m certain I’ll never get my fill. I need this girl.”
I loved how this was a slow burner romance to start off with where we followed Melody and Carson through their meeting to them developing a relationship; this part was sweet, sexy, funny and just nice to read. Then out of nowhere we have this big plot twist that takes it from a sweet and funny romance to a more intense story and you are left wondering will they or won’t they which came at exactly the right spot in the story. I enjoy a romance but I always need something a little extra; a bit of drama or sadness or suspense and this story definitely delivered for me. A great first read from this author and I really hope Lexi gets a story!
Slow burn romance. This is my first book by this author. And I did like it. It’s a sweet and swooney romance (or to me it was). Plus who doesn’t love a guy in a baseball uniform. 😍😍 I can’t wait to read what this author has in store for Sammie.
So the whole baseball player hits a fan and they fall in love has been done before, I knew this going in to the book but was giving it a chance.
I wanted to like it, I liked the characters and where the story was going but I wanted more. My frustration can be summed up I. The text I sent to a friend noting how I'm at page 210 of a 272 page boom and the major drama hasn't occurred yet. Which of course than lead to the type ending I hate where something huge happens yet the author then solves the conflict and gives the HEA in less than 50 pages.
It gets 3 stars because I didn't hate it or love it, I am happy it was free with ku though!
Really enjoyed this sports-related (baseball) romance -- the main characters were perfect for each other. Fast moving and easy, fun-to-read storyline. Sweet and slow build-up with a touch of angst that was totally unexpected.
I liked the story okay, but it was inundated with grammatical errors. For example, the author didn’t know the difference between “through” and “threw.” Those types of errors really distract from the story for me.
Carson and Melody are both no strangers to pain and baseball! Each one has had their fair share of setbacks in life but have done what they could to become successful! Their love for baseball and one horrible accident bring these two together and from moment one you know it’s going to be a wild ride! I found myself halfway through thinking “gosh they are so perfect how is there more to their story?” Well let me tell you *plot twist* I seriously never saw the bomb that was dropped so cuddos Ms. Williford cuddos!!
Plus with secondary characters like Lexi and uncle Clay you can’t help but fall in love with all this book has to offer! Can’t wait for future books (please tell me Lexi is getting one as well as Ryan?)
This was so flipping cute I can't even deal. Like, if I really think about it I should be giving this book 3.5 stars but the cuteness is way too much and I have to give it 4 stars and I'm not even sorry.
Here's the thing: I love NA books and I love baseball. This book gave me both of these things and it was almost a guaranteed slam dunk for me, er should I say home run. But the thing with this book is that it wasn't just unbelievably cute but I feel like it was a perfectly executed plot that there isn't much I can complain about. The characters were amazing and the romance was top notch and I even loved the drama and loved how it felt more like a legitimate plot twist rather than some unnecessary drama to throw at the couple before ending the book. It was a twist I never really expected but loved all the same. Honestly, the thing about this book is that it was a story that can be a fantasy of mine because I do love me some baseball players and wouldn't mind falling in love with any of them like this. Like I finished this book and was like "can this happen to me? Please?" Ugh, it was so good and had a slight air of being realistic which was great. I also want to point out that I loved how sweet Carson is and it's not something you typically see in NA, especially with a jock protagonist like him but he was so amazing and I fell in love with him so fast. And I also hella related to Melody because I, too, am an insane baseball fan but without the money for seasons tickets. My only problem is that at times the dialogue writing seemed a bit too straight forward and it was like giant monologues one after the other but it was something I could easily get over. However.....the baseball was slightly inaccurate and I was peeved. I can get wanting to dumb it down for people who don't get baseball (though I'm lowkey wondering if the author doesn't know baseball all that much either) but there are some things you need to get right. Like you don't keep playing in the bottom of extra innings once you go ahead and the team has a manager, not a coach. I'm being nitpicky but this is the only sport I care about so let me live. There was another thing but I can't remember what it was so it's fine. Other than that, and the serious lack of Sandlot references where it would've been perfect, this book was beyond perfect for me and was one of the cutest things I've ever read and I'm beyond happy.
Carson Lawrence has finally made it to the show. Playing for the Baltimore Blue Birds. Opening night and he is excited until he hits a foul ball right into the stands hitting a girl in the head and knocking her out.
Melody Carrick has been coming to watch the Blue Birds play since she was a little girl with her parents. But opening day 10 years before her parents were killed coming home from the game.
Melody was taken to the hospital and Carson finished the game. He then went to the hospital to check on the girl. Despite having two black eyes and a knot on her head he was very attracted to Melody.
Melody and Carson’s story is filled with twists and turns and I couldn’t put it down! This is the first story I have read by Trish Williford, but it won’t be the last!
A foul ball hitting her in the face leads to baseball fan Melody meeting new rookie player Carson in hospital. They become fast friends and more in this very enjoyable story.
Carson is not the standard baseball star who sleeps around. He is aware he needs to grab his chances in the majors but is also falling for Melody. Refreshing read. I liked both characters and the storyline. Carson has such a lovely mom! And I would love to visit the island Captiva now.
The story grabbed my attention and never lagged. A new author for my watchlist.
I simply loved it! The depth of the characters is something I love, why? because is not like a simple story you don't connect with, on the contrary, I found myself smiling like a loon after reading some chapters of this book
If you love sports or even if you don't take a chance on it and read the book.
Carson and Melody are match made in baseball heaven. I absolutely loved everything about them. How they first met, after Carson hit Mel with a foul ball. And the rest is history and I honestly couldn't get enough of them. So many laughs, love, an so much more.
Amazing. I love the love between Mel and Carson and the meaning of true love. Hey the tissues ready. Love love love!!!! Anymore books about Lexi and Sammi???
This was a really sweet read by Trish Wiiliford. I work at a baseball stadium so it was fairly easy for me to get into the storyline. I truly enjoyed reading about Carson and Melody. They were a truly enjoyable couple. This was my first novel by this author and it won't be my last.
Melody is a Bluebirds baseball team fan. She has been through tragic loss in her life. She is a strong, happy, independent young lady. She is at a baseball game and and incident occurs and Carson comes into her life. Carson is a baseball player with his own issues. They both meet and are totally attracted to each other, but Carson doesn't want to date anyone during his rookie season. But they are drawn to each other. There are twists and turns I did not see coming. I liked this book a lot. What a good introduction to this series. This is my first Trish Williford book. I totally recommend it.
I love this book!! The characters are so real and loveable I can't wait to read this book again and again! Carson and Melody were destined to meet. She is the biggest fan girl there is when it comes to the Baltimore Blue Birds and he is the Rookie trying his best in a game he loves. But one foul ball sets them on the journey of their lives when they fall in love. Whether you love baseball or not you will love this book!
I was lucky enough to win this book as an arc. Let me tell you this book was amazing! It had the perfect amount of baseball and romance mix. I love Carson And Melody. Trisha does an excellent job of writing her characters. I feel that she really gives them good personality and story lines. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good sports romance. I can’t wait to read more of this series.
What a great introduction to a new to me author Trish Williford. I love to read sports romance novels, and I think Trish did a wonderful job in balancing out the sports side to the romance side. I love when sports books have on field action, and this one certainly had that. But I also enjoyed the locker room banter as well. I think that is when you really see another side to a character than just the romantic one. This story had an extremely unique take on the whole boy meets girl start to the book. It was kind of funny, but not at the same time. You could tell that there was something potentially there between Carson and Melody, even though Carson had strict rules he wanted to follow for his rookie season. These two just clicked, but boy I so did not see that twist in the end coming. It was heartbreaking and then it made me extremely angry. I really do hope that this a start to a new series. I would love to see a story for Ryan and especially Lexi - that girl is fantastic!! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book
Every year since she was a child, Melody has loved to go see her favorite baseball team play. This year she get the surprise of her life when she is hit in the face on opening day. Little does she know it will change her life. I loved following Melody and Carson's story as they are brought together by their love of the game, but may be torn apart by a event from both of their pasts.
Firstly, I’m not a huge fan of instalove. I am SUPER picky about it. I feel that it exists, but under the right conditions.
This book was the PERFECT conditions. The comedy played as a back prop to the usual ironic humor life tends to (throw) at us. It was BELIEVABLE because the characters had real chemistry that you feel before they even meet. There was something fantastic about how they met and how the events unfolded afterward. I almost expected that after such a stellar opening, the book might decline in plot flow.
NOPE.
It held its own flawlessly. This book feels strategized. Not just tossed together. This book was so good that even if it was clean romance, it would captivate me and be a deeply felt love story. The erotic intimacy only added to a perfect tale. Sprinkles on a Sunday.
There was something beautiful about this story. I read it so fast. It became my happy place. I wanted life to pause so that I could read.
There were a lot of laugh out loud moments. The lines were “snort laugh funny” don’t be drinking coffee while you read.
I also love the relationships outside Melody and Carson. Carson’s relationship with his mother, Melody’s with her friend, Carson with his friend, etc. these were healthy, loving, nutty, honest relationships that made me love the main characters more! This made them real people to me.
I can’t praise this book enough, it is a five-star delight that I imagine I will want to reread in the future. It just made me FEEL good. It is a feel good book and worth every penny.
Honestly, I’m surprised it hasn’t been picked up as a movie.
This was a really fun and extremely cute book. It pacing isn’t usually my style but it was refreshing to read about two genuinely good and “normal” people - no bad boys or ice queens or anything - who happen to fall in love. There’s an argument that the romance wasn’t a slow burn but a bit of instalove-y but it really didn’t bother me.
I absolutely adored the main characters. Carson especially was an absolute breath of fresh air. In general their dynamic was so sweet and even the big plot twist - which I didn’t predict for once! - was done so true to character. It was a nice change to see the separation be because of something other than a typical miscommunication/pull away situation.
