Seeing Red by Heidi Brod has the promise of a gripping, spine tingling suspense and a catchy cover to boot.

The story follows Seraphina as she deals with a past trauma, raising a daughter, and a philandering husband. The trauma has her questioning her own sanity, and I think Brod wanted the reader to question her sanity as well as automatically assume the issue was not her sanity, because that would be too easy. Brod keeps you on your toes guessing who the protagonist is and which characters are guilty, not guilty, or just plain crazy.

While the story had it's intrigue and suspense, it was a bit choppy. I felt the characters were acting in contradiction to themselves almost immediately after they did something or said something. They would do the complete opposite, and have a complete 180 of thoughts to the point it made me stop and question if I had read it wrong. It was not smooth at all. While I enjoyed the story, I felt this took away from the overall enjoyment because it took time away to try and mentally catch up with the jumping around. While this did not ruin the story, I feel like it had a significant impact on the story, therefore bringing my rating of it down.

Even with the choppiness, this story held a lot of really good content, including suspense, drama, mystery, and a little love mixed in. Those who enjoy a good suspense novel that keeps you guessing could enjoy Seeing Red. Pick it up and let me know what you think.

Is she in despair or is she delusional?

Seeing Red, Heidi Brod’s debut novel, is suspenseful and eerily... possible. From the turning of the first page, you’ll be on edge wondering if Seraphina really is in danger - or if she’s just a danger to herself.

It all starts with a violent attack she survived, but from which she never quite fully recovered emotionally, while she was in college. Flashbacks seems all too real, and she finds herself back there - or imagining she’s back there - even as she’s now married to her college sweetheart, a solid and serious investigator with the District Attorney’s office.

Her problems are behind her, but the past isn’t staying in the past.

Seraphina feels she must protect her family above all else, and her instincts are sharpened especially now that she has a baby girl of her own. Is she just feeling majorly insecure, or is something major about to happen?

Heidi Brod certainly takes the screenwriting talents of her own past— and transfers them skillfully into this novel. Obviously it would adapt well to the screen, which takes its action and anticipation to a new level in the reader’s mind.

Other than the strength of its writing and story, the best part of this work is that it forces the reader to question everyone’s intentions and sanity, which adds immensely to its suspense. Is Seraphina seriously still in danger? Why can’t her husband help with her paranoia? Could her stalker have been her own husband all along?

While everyone should agree the world needs more strong female characters, the crux of this novel is that Seraphina’s strength is so easy to discount. It’s a fun read — albeit about a troubled couple and a potential serial killer — that taunts the readers senses, but also makes them wonder: How far would I have to go to make someone believe me?

Hated the MC. The wife suffering from PTSD was trying to heal. Her husband was awful. Thinking of leaving, ended up cheating. He blames his wife for his short comings. Saw the ending coming, but was happy for seraphina. Thought it ironic how she healed through destruction.
