FEATURES AND BENEFITS Would you risk your reputation to find out what is pleasing to God? The greatest thing that can ever be said about a person is that he or she pleased God. But while pleasing God makes you popular in heaven, it may not make you popular on earth. Do you have the temptation to be well received here on earth? Do you make spiritual decisions based upon what people will think of you? Going a step further, have you considered whether you have any reputation in hell? Are you living the kind of life that causes a threat to Satan’s interests? That’s how you become famous in hell.
It’s time to stop valuing your reputation with people more than your reputation with God. Start living your life with eternity in mind. Respected theologian and author R. T. Kendall has written this book to help you discover the keys to living a life that truly pleases God, making you not only popular in heaven, but also famous in hell.
Popular In Heaven Famous In Hell by R.T. Kendall is a powerful and very approachable book that examines how to live as a person of faith in today's world. Backed up with scripture and anecdotes, R.T. Kendall really engages the reader. R.T. Kendall explores the men of faith as listed in Hebrews 11. We want to live faithful lives, seeking to be popular in heaven. This is counter cultural as the world seeks to be popular on earth. We need to live lives focused on God. We want to live by His values and not the world's. Have we lived well? "No amount of money, power or prestige can alter the date we each have with death." One day we will all face God. We want to hear "Well done good and faithful servant" and not "Be gone. I never knew you." A powerful story is told of a man in Australia who stopped strangers asking "Are you saved? If you died tonight, are you going to heaven?" Over his lifetime he saved 146,000 souls. Wow! How do we reach people for Jesus? One life at a time. Who will be in heaven because of your faithful witness? We need to have a healthy awareness of Satan but remember that it is God who is all powerful. He has already defeated Satan and death. We need to stand firm on the Word of God. God already has the victory. While we still have breath, there is kingdom work to be done. My favourite quote is on Ruth Graham's (1920-2007) tombstone "End of construction - thank you for your patience." What will be on yours? Popular In Heaven Famous In Hell is such a powerful book. It will make you think. It will draw you closer to Jesus if you apply the many wise words. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Don't read this book if you want to remain comfortable. This book will challenge and convict you. (It did me.) We want to live our lives pleasing to God. That is our greatest achievement, Kendall says. But we get sidetracked. We wonder what people will think. The question is, he says, do we want to be popular here or popular in heaven? If we want to be popular in heaven, we must abandon approval on earth. (God may give you earthly popularity as a byproduct but not because you were seeking it.)
Kendall gives examples of characters from the Bible, drawing spiritual lessons from them. I was particularly struck by his teaching on Moses. The impact of Exodus 33:13 was strong. So was the teaching on pride and the temptations we face. And the section on grieving the Holy Spirit was so convicting!
Kendall knows that spiritual warfare is very real and has a good section on it. He reveals the kinds of actions the devil hates, making us famous in hell.
Kendall reminds us that there is a time coming when the truth will be revealed. Will we, like Paul, count our earthly accomplishments as nothing? Will we find that our lives have been pleasing to God?
Food for thought: “...if you make popularity in heaven your goal, you might as well forget being popular on earth...” (p. 102)
I recommend this book to Christians who want to please God with their lives. You will be challenged.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
This book basically speaks to something many people struggle with. Pleasing people.
If we try to please people here on earth we often aren’t pleasing God. He should be our main focus, all we care about. But when we try to make the world around us happy or fit in we might not be very well liked, not the most popular kid in school (or in your community, workplace, etc.).
The author gives some great Biblical examples of people who didn’t care about being popular on earth but they are popular in Heaven. This should be our goal as well.
If this sounds interesting to you then give this book a read.
A copy of this book was given to me. All opinions are my own.
3.5 stars for me. It was such a unique idea and something I hadn’t really thought about. Pleasing God of course but actually Popular in Heaven and famous in hell, no. We often do fall into the trap of worrying about what people think of us, this was a wonderful book to help us think differently on our motives for what we do and say. I think it will help me live more boldly, fearlessly and mindfully.
A very interesting book. Kendal makes very informed comments on behaviour that merits heavenly applause and that which cause the angels to blush. My one problem however is the coined phrase 'popular in heaven', as it is I think overused throughout the book. Overall a helpful view of the spiritual realm.
Amazing expository teaching by a charismatic Christian. Who knew? Anyways, really good book teaching us what to do to be both popular in heaven and famous in hell.
