Sometimes it takes a a sunset to show you what really matters in life. But it's the sunrise that bring the promise of a new beginning.

Ty and Jen have been friends for nearly as long as anyone can remember. But when Ty goes off to college and leaves her behind, he has to face the reality that he cares for her as more then just a friend.

As graduations approaches and with only one summer left before he begins basic training, Ty must make a decision. Military life is never easy; is it fair to force it on the one he loves?

In the midst of wrestling with the question and coming to the realization that summer is quickly drawing to a close, Ty struggles to face questions he cannot answer, and is forced to examine his own heart.

Is it possible that God has a future for him with Jen? Or will the summer close with only memories of days gone by?

Their relationship would be old fashioned. But that was okay. Because old fashioned and whimsical fit perfectly with a southern summer.

Well this was sweeter than sweet tea! This was such a lovely and refreshing love story that had the unique element of just being in the guy’s point of view that was really quite sweet to see as there was no inappropriate thoughts, actions, or even mentions, which I highly appreciated. Great Spiritual Content as well and I loved seeing two college aged young adults be so sure in their faiths. For anyone wanting to read a sweet (yes, I know I keep saying that, but it is!) young adult love story with great faith content, you might really think about this one. :)

MY REVIEW IS LATE but oh well, #summer.

I entered this book thinking, "well one more sweet little novella that'll be a breeze to go through" but OMW I WAS BLOWN AWAY by the truths and brilliant examples in here.

First off, the characters were lovely and sweet. Mike was my favorite. All the young people had great relationships with their parents. Ty was relatable and he had struggles. Jen made me smile.

The plot was slow moving like, a summer evening. You sit still, you watch it move slowly, the colors blending and dancing and changing so quietly you don't quite see how.

It's ROMANCE. Which means emotion and relationship growth. So here's a fair warning. This is ROMANCE. Not an exciting hold-on-to-your-seat thrilling ride. It's sweet and quiet.

It's got a vibe of western and feels traditional and conservative in a lot of its morals + standards + methods so it is 100% clean ;D

Now that the good part is over let's discuss the GREAT points.

- the themes

- firstly of trusting God with your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse. You cannot always be there, but GOD WILL. All the YES to this. You know how in certain movies and books boyfriends + girlfriends are so obsessive and posessive and lying to each other to keep them safe?? They should READ THIS BOOK.

- secondly, TAKING IT SLOWLY. Ha. If all bookish couples took things slow and easy and allowed their relationships to develop like this and weren't in such a rush HALF THE BREAKUPS WOULD BE AVOIDED.

- they keep a nice distance from each other and respect their parents wishes and advice #gold

- putting God first. THAT is marvelous. If God says no it is no. THANKS FOR THAT MESSAGE OF SELFLESSNESS AND OBEDIANCE. we all need it.

So umm... yeah. I know there are those who feel ticked off at really traditionalist values and ways so this book is probably NOT FOR YOU. I loved this little novella and I recommend it to my Christian friends, especially those of the romance loving variety XDD

Summed up, sweet and clean and a lovely example of how things could be done ^.^

Title: I Don’t Dance

Author: Jesseca Wheaton

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

Setting: Southern United States

Publisher: Jesseca Wheaton

Source: from author (in exchange for honest review)

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 stars

I Don’t Dance by Jesseca Wheaton

I don’t know quite what to say about this novella. On one hand, it was a great story with good plot, characters, writing, and setting. I’ve no complaints there.

However, I just didn’t enjoy it. The characters live in a completely different world than my own – and I just couldn’t get into that world. Everything about their lives – and especially about the traditions surrounding the romance – was difficult for me to understand. It’s one of those things I respect but don’t comprehend.

You see, personally, it makes me mad to think that a guy would ask my parents for permission to date (something I don’t believe to be necessary) before even speaking of romance to me – or that my parents would keep this from me for three months. It seems to show a lack of respect for my personal opinions and ability to have original thoughts! I’d be so furious – that guy would definitely be immediately rejected! ;)

The chaperone thing drove me up the wall, too. :P

However, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s an amazing story. If you believe dating should be courting and would like to see your own traditions represented – something which I believe doesn’t happen very often that I’ve seen – then you’ll love this novella!

PLOT: 4/5

The plot was well-designed and came together in a neat, orderly way. I felt like there was a bit of a drag in the middle – and I admit it was probably a little too slow-paced and low on “drama” (things happening, haha) for my personal taste, but it was still a great plot.

CHARACTERS: 5/5

Miss Wheaton always writes amazing characters – and this book was no exception!

Mike was probably my favorite. He was a great best friend – and he was funny, too! I wouldn’t mind seeing a book about Mike, though I’m too eager to see other works by Jesseca Wheaton come out to push too hard for that. ;)

I did like Ty and Jen as well. Jen seemed quite spunky and fun; I’d like to be her friend! I think we’d get along fairly well, too. (I need to meet this fictional character!)

Ty was also a good guy. And he appreciates country music, which is always a good thing. :P

Some of the characters in this book annoyed me – such as most of the parents and younger siblings – but that’s personal preference and me being a lot more, well, liberal in this area, haha! What’s controlling and overly protective to me is commonplace to others.

SETTING: 5/5

I loved the lazy feel of the Southern summer! I’ve always wanted to visit the South – though I don’t know if I want to live there – so it was definitely interesting and enjoyable to read about it!

I also LOVE LOVE LOVEDDD the country music references! I think I got most of them. Really a lot of fun. :D

WRITING: 5/5

The slow-paced summer romance bled perfectly into the writing style. I’m used to seeing Miss Wheaton write historical, so this was new, but she definitely pulled it off – and well!

CONTENT: 1/5

Language: n/a

Violence: n/a

Sexual: n/a

Other: talk about wars, going off to wars, being a soldier, etc., no details. Mentions of losing a limb and a prosthetic leg.

Perfectly clean and fine for all ages.

OVERALL: 3.5/5

Though I personally didn’t like this book, I would recommend it to any conservative Christians (more conservative than me, meaning) who enjoy summer romances and would like to see their personal style of courtship/Christian dating portrayed.

There are no words to describe how amazing this book is! I want to rate it 1,000+ stars, but sadly 5 stars are what I can rate it. This book was one of the sweetest, most humorist romances I have ever read. Jen and Ty's relationship was so amazing to read about. I loved it!! As much as I love Ty, Mike probably stole best character in this book for me. He's teasing and character was amazing and I loved him. xD

This book was amazing and I recommend it EVERYONE!!!

This book was so many things. Comfortable. Heart-warming. Hilarious. Beautiful.

In fact, I like those labels so well that I want to take them one at a time. Never done a review this way before, but let's give it a try. :)

Comfortable. The small-town southern setting. The families that had known each other forever. The lifelong best friends wondering if they could become something more. There was just such a homey feel to this setting, these characters, this love story. It wasn't deep, dark secrets and tragic backstories and insurmountable obstacles. It was down-to-earth living and learning and loving. Trusting and walking with God for the day-to-day and the uncertain future. Old-fashioned chivalry and chocolate ice cream mixed with Instagram messages and country music CDs.

Heart-warming. Ty and Jen's relationship was just so perfect. It's been a while since I read a romance from only the guy's perspective, but I wouldn't have had this one any other way. The story was Ty's in the same way the struggles and decisions were his, and Jen was his perfect complement--lightening the mood when things got too somber, trusting him in the midst of his uncertainty, and loving him for exactly who he was. Ty's struggle to be sure of their future didn't leave me annoyed and frustrated because it was grounded so solidly in his high ideals, his love for Jen, and his desire to obey God above anything. I loved him so much--not in a romantic, swooning way, but with a satisfied, solid admiration and affection. And if that doesn't sound like a compliment, trust me; this kind of hero is my absolute favorite!

Hilarious. Mike. Oh, my word. What can I say? Every guy needs a best friend like this. Who am I kidding? I need a best friend like this! Their chemistry was perfect. Their banter was flawless. The way Ty could go from laughing to wanting to throttle him in the space of a breath was so real. Near the beginning, I almost didn't want to get to the love story just because I was having so much fun with the two guys. (Good thing I wasn't the author, because, as above, the love story was wonderful.) But every time Mike poked his nose into the scene again, I knew I was in for a great time!

And finally, take the sum of everything I just mentioned. Multiply by the hundred other bits and pieces that fit together perfectly to make the whole. Add an epilogue that brought tears to my eyes--again! What is it with you, Jesseca?!? Subtract any hint of inappropriate content or uncomfortable description in the romance. And the total is--beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

I would recommend this book without hesitation, and I'm so honored to have been part of the team of beta-readers. This is my favorite of Jesseca Wheaton's books so far--and that's saying a lot. Five glowing stars!

I received a free copy of this book from the author. A favorable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

5 stars (6/10 hearts). I don’t drink sweet tea but I imagine this would be the written version of sweet tea. It’s just precious.

Some teen girl books are awesome because of how simple they are. They’ve figured out life; they’ve realized the essential truths of trust and what really matters—and they’re right. This is one of them. It’s just all about the essentials of life and the core of trust, and it’s beautiful. So sweet and summery and whimsical and full, full of love—all sorts of love: romance, friends, family, country, and God.

I love how cute the romance is—friends-to-more is so adorable. The characters are delightful… Ty & Jen, and their families, and especially Mike. (His banter is epicness). I love the gorgeous setting. And maybe most of all I loved the themes—they were so true, so powerful, and tied everything together so beautifully. I kept expecting the story to end and turned the pages desperately only to find it continued—and ended perfectly.

I love Jesseca Wheaton’s writing because of its beauty—both writing style, plots, and spiritual lessons. Her works just get better and better—and I’m so eager for her next story.

Content: Mention of a few hugs, a cheek/hair kiss or two, some dancing & euphemisms.

A Favourite Quote: “‘Ty, let’s not focus on how many days we have till you leave. Let’s instead focus on the time we’ve had. And the time we have left.’”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘You got Mike home?’
“‘Yeah, we didn’t have any problems.’ Well, besides the fact that Mike had managed to figure out the password for his phone.”

Oh my goodness, where do I even begin?! My critique partner stepped out of her domain in the world of historical and into my beloved genre—adorable summer contemporaries!

If you'd told me this time last year that I was even going to be writing this review, I would have laughed. "Jess, writing an old-fashioned romance? I think not." But here we are, on release day for I Don't Dance. A sweet lil' book that holds a special place in my heart, all the way down to the country-music-hinting title and a setting that I'm familiar with.

So yes, this darling little book is a love story, about two young people who find themselves falling in love in a whirlwind summer, under a sunset sky. A time of sibling chaperones, ice cream dates, and making the most of their time together.

The romance is sweet and precious and everything a romance should be. Ty is the honorable knight in shining armor. (Or...uniform. Whichever you prefer.) Jen is the sweet girl who's best friend is falling for her. Mike is the hilarious sidekick, full of laughs and jokes and excellent advice. Not to mention I'm 109% for him getting his own story...

The faith themes were so real and well-done they brought me to tears. Their questions, their doubts, their above-all-else faith and trust in God. It was inspiring. <3

This book is summertime and Scotty McCreery and Krispy Kreme donuts. It's uniforms and pickup trucks. It's holding hands and dancing in the rain and falling in love.

It's beautiful and sweet, and I love it oh-so much. <3

I was a beta reader for this book, so I was really excited to read the finished version. It did not disappoint.

This is a really sweet summer read. This follows a friendship that blossoms into a romance.

Ty was an awesome character. He treats Jen with respect, and her parents. Though most of what they did as a couple was fun dates, since they have been friends their whole life's, I didn't really mind. Though I would have loved hearing more of just there everyday conversations, the relationship really didn't feel rushed.

Jenny (Jen) was a very sweet girl. Though sometimes I felt like She was a bit to perfect, I still loved her. She was sweet, and lovable. I loved that she was willing to let Ty lead.

Also, there were two good sets of parents. Do you know how rare that is in YA?? It was great.

Mike was... not my favorite. He's that friend that I'm really not sure how ever became a friend. His teasing was a bit much for me and I found myself annoyed with him through the whole book.

The plot was fairly well paced, and it seemed the perfect length.

The only thing I did not like

I did like the ending. It was cute.

Overall, good, sweet read with a nice, summery feel. I would recommend this to ages 12+ for the romance.

This was just pure fluff and I loved it. The characters were great and relatable, the romance was so cute, the parents were actually involved (!!!), ahhh, it was just a Good.
(Also reading while riding through the mountains of NC is highly recommended, I enjoyed that a lot.)

guys, this book was so adorable. I just... my heart.

I absolutely adored the old-fashioned feel of the whole book. Definitely one of the most absolute sweetest quaint summer-vibesy romances I've ever read, and super clean at that. It was so refreshing to read about the main characters' relationships blossoming in the Lord, and trusting Him through it all. I found it a little strange but still super sweet that Jen's siblings chaperoned their dates, too. I mean, I've heard of that but I've never read anything about it, so kinda weird. :P But really well written!

I think my only issue with this book was... Mike. Yes, the hilarious sidekick of a best friend that everyone who reads this book adores. Honestly, he annoyed me to no end (I felt like he held a big lack of respect for Ty). xD Totally personal preference, though--like I said, everyone loves him. :P

Overall, a must read if you're into ADORABLE sweet summery contemporary but still old-ish style romance. <3 Also, I thought it was hilarious that they used Instagram to communicate for awhile, given the oldish feel that this story has (might be totally me once again about the oldish thing though). xD 4 stars.

Normally I don't like reading books solely focused on romance, but in this case, I wanted to see how the author would portray a clean relationship between Ty and Jenny in this day and age. And I would have to say she did an outstanding job!

The story is told from Ty's point-of-view, in third person. I think this was a unique choice, since females tend to have the lead in a romance. I found him to just be amazing. His joking around with Mike was hilarious as well as his playfulness with Jenny. I really liked how he was respectful towards Jenny's parents and asked them first if pursuing a relationship with their daughter was possible. Although I'm not completely into the idea of courting, I found this to be delightful overall.

My favorite part of the story in general is that both characters were searching for Christ in their relationship with each other. Many romances these days are superficial, and don't feel real (you know, the whole teen romance thing in our world today xD). This one was different, with Ty being concerned that a life with him being in the military would not be what his love deserved. And the epilogue just touched my heart....

I think it is pretty family-friendly overall, but I would recommended it for maybe 13+ since romance isn't something that should be focused on.If you enjoy clean Christian romances, then this would be the book for you.

FTC DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy of this book. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Oh I love this books as much as I did when I first read it. It was amazing. I only found 1 grammar mistake, an accidentally capitalized E in the middle of a word. But otherwise
It's soo good!
The romance is like 100% clean, the sweetest thing ever. Ty is just such a good guy, Jen is adorable. And Mike... I think we all agree that Mike is just the best.
The story flow was really good. It was all just beautiful and taken care of and sweet and just makes you want to hug them all.
And now I need some sweet tea.

Thank you Jesseca for letting me be part of the beta team (seeing my name in print at the end is surreal) and for writing it!

*waves* Are you ready for my review? I hope so!

The Characters:
Ty - loved him! He had struggles any guy in love would have which made it interesting! :p
Mike - oh my goodness! He's hilarious! He reminded me so much of a character in my own book – so many jokes and jabs! I really liked his personality!
Jenny - sweet and caring, just what Ty loved! <3
Ty's parents - loved them!
Jenny's parents - <3 Her Dad was the best!

The Story-line:
Hey, the guy is in the army, of course this is great! Other than that aspect, this story is definitely a romance. But, the romance was done really well!

Content:
Some hugs between the main couple, also holding hands. A kiss on the forehead.

All-in-all:
I love how the relationship was done in the right way!! It made the story so lovely! Even though there was times Ty didn't think things were going right, he immediately went to the Lord about it! A very sweet romance!

A short and sweet summery read. I loved how music had a purpose in the story and it was fun to see Ty and Jen's relationship bloom. All the younger sibling chaperones were great and almost every scene had a refreshing summery feel, even if the characters struggled. To my own surprise, Mike was my favorite in the end. I always love military themes, so that made this book even better.

Completely family-friendly, but perhaps 10+ just for interest level.

I read this novella in about two hours. I couldn't put it down!

What I loved:
*The message. I've frequently pondered how God gives us signs, directions for what we should do or where we should go. I loved the lengths Ty was willing to go to ensure Jenny's happiness. How he loved her family too, and how courteous he was. A rare gem in today's fast-paced hookup society.
*The characters. They were unique and worked so well together. I related to them very well and might I add, I would love to see a spinoff romance about Mike. 😂
*The scenery and descriptive language! Oh dear, I was so absorbed in the details that I felt almost like I was there. And I've never been to either of the Carolinas!
*The innocence of the story as a whole. I was so afraid that the book would end sadly, (still gunshy after reading a Kingsbury novel where the soldier was killed and his best friend took care of his girl), so I was very pleased that it ended well. And the epilogue....!
*Positive military elements!!

What I was *meh* about:
*The pace did seem a bit rushed. They have known each other for their entire lives, of course, and considering the book length, I feel that the pacing was necessary, but it just felt a little abrupt at the same time. If that even makes sense!

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this story! It lived up to my expectations and then some. Well done!

As soon as I heard Jesseca Wheaton was writing a contemporary romance, I knew I wanted to read it. I fell in love with her writing when I read "A Question of Honor," and couldn't wait to see how she wrote in a modern setting.

This was a lovely, summery novella. The romance was very sweet - I loved Ty and Jenny together! Jenny's family members were all amazing. Although I felt it was very short, that's true for most novellas. :) It may be a bit fluffy for some readers. But I look forward to Jesseca's future work!

STORY

I read this in one sitting and it is absolutely best enjoyed outside in the green grass with nieces running about in the yard. If you don't have those last two things, pardon. But for real, this book was a delight.

I'm not one for gushy romances, in all honestly. I'm a romantic at heart, but I love romance as a side plot. I love romance that deals with tough topics and the couples have to push through life together.

This novella did what I loved but was still absolutely sweet. I didn't groan or scoff as I read (which I... tend to do when I read most romances nowadays... *cough*). I loved it. It was well-paced and adorable

THEMES

AMAZING THEMES. PATRIOTISM, FAMILY, LOVE. AAH.

I loved how Ty, the book's main character, called and asked Jen's father for permission, and her parents kept it hush-hush till Ty could come in person (not via text, call, letters) to ask Jen to date. I just LOVED THAT. I'm SO old-fashioned but I love 1) romances where the GUY CHASES and INITIATES the relationship 2) when the guy respects the family enough to ask the father first 3) the kind of love the couple had for God first. It was so great.

I'm old-fashioned, y'all. I am so sick of this day and age where every single Christian is rushing about to find love. I'm sick of girls telling guys what they feel and the guy never has to start the relationship. I'm tired of love being mushy-gushy and shallow.

This book was a great breath of fresh air and really encouraged me. I loved being able to talk to my parents, too, because I've no interest in dating... but if a guy asked my parents first, he'd be off to a great start. ;)

CHARACTERS

Obviously, Mike was my favorite. Because, sarcasm, and kindness, and aaah.

Ty and Jen were super cute. I liked the romance from the guy's POV and while I don't feel we got to know Jen too much, I didn't mind at all. Novellas can only hold so much, and Ty's character arc was absolutely well done. Watching him follow God and honor Him was so great.

The family dynamics were lovely and the whole cast was perfect. How everyone dealt with things and treated each other was spot on. I love Southern novels, haha. (Even if I do NOT LIKE COUNTRY MUSIC.)

CONTENT
G or PG. No swearing. No sex or nudity. No violence. No drinking. SUPER clean read! Just light romance and talks of injuries.

OVERALL

Really encouraging. Sometimes, I feel I'm one in a hundred Christians not interested in a relationship. Not because I don't want love. But because I don't want to waste time searching for something God doesn't have in my life's immediate scope. God has SO MUCH for us to do. So much we can learn. SO much we can do for others. Life doesn't start when we find a s/o, nor do our lives suddenly find meaning when we find love.

This novel was a precious romance but also encourages us to seek God above all else. So, so good.

Arrghhpmh.

Okay, I really like this book. It's so cute, and funny, and very clean.

BUT.

That being said, there's always been something that just . . . bugged me about it. And I finally figured out what it was: Every. Stinking. Time one of them said something sweet/swoon-worthy/romantic, the other person brushed it off with sarcasm. Why. WHY?!?!?! Like, that just bugs me sooooo much.

I read this story in two sittings - would've been one if I hadn't had to stop for dinner and chores. ^.^ This truly is a darling story, that is at once whimsical and realistic, and homey, and fun.
It's so easy to read - I wasn't even aware of the chapters as I flipped through the pages because I was just too involved in the story itself.
The characters were great, Ty and Jen being the "stars". Ty's best friend, Mike, was pretty fantastic too, and as I've seen others say - I certainly wouldn't mind a story staring him either! :)
I loooove the respect Ty gave to everyone around him, but especially to Jen and her parents. That he would respect her so much as to ask her father's permission first - yep, swoonworthy moment there. ;) He was just such a gentleman.
And I appreciated the chaperone-involvement. My older sister courted before getting married, and I was chaperone many a time. ^.^ So this was all quite familiar to me.
What I also liked was the realistic setting. It was very much a part of the story, and I was glad for that.
The faith strand was very present and I loved that they both sought God's will.
So yes, this was a light, airy, fun read that has an adorable romance! And it's clean - I wouldn't hesitate a moment to hand it to my younger sister.

Read for a reading challenge. I had to read the whole book in a weird spot. It was kinda fun:p

I enjoyed I Don't Dance a lot. It wasn't really the most exciting book to read but I really appreciated that they had a healthy, respectful relationship. It was so sweet!
