Break the cycle of doubting yourself, take God at His word, and talk back with truth - a new message of freedom from bestselling coauthor of Wild and Free Hayley Morgan. We know Christ came to speak life, but then how come our inner critic keeps showing up and stealing the mic? If we’re honest, she’s a harsh one, saying things we’d never dream of saying to You’ll never measure up, you’ll fail again tomorrow, you just can’t get it right. It has been said that the eighteen inches from head to heart is the soul’s longest journey. Our head knows the good news is true, but our heart struggles to believe it, and it is in this gap that we battle to believe the promises of God. Hayley Morgan, coauthor of bestselling book Wild and Free, has wrestled with this tension her whole life. In Preach to Yourself, she tackles it head-on to discover how we can renew our minds to renew our lives. For every woman who struggles with repetitive, negative self-talk, this book will show you how to identify the toxic loops where you get stuck and replace them with the truth of God we can believe with our whole selves. This is not a “try harder” reprimand, it’s a “believe better” to take God at His word when He tells you who you are. Come along and learn a simple practice to break free from the lies holding you back, and step forward into the fullness of life God has planned.

Who doesn't preach to themselves? I'm constantly narrating my own story, and often my inner critic has the loudest voice. That can be dangerous and as someone who believes change is possible, I am here for this practical book!
Hayley Morgan's writing in Preach to Yourself (PTY) is relatable and full of hopeful examples. PTY is for the woman who wants to replace the lies she tells herself with HOPE! Hayley gives practical examples for lies she's told herself and a step-by-step process for how to identify your own lies and replace them with truth from Scripture.

Made me cry multiple times. Such beautiful and timely reminders for me in regards to positive self talk and coming to the Lord to help me renew my mind and let Him work.
For me this book was between a 3 and a 3 1/2 As I got into the final 2 sections of this book I enjoyed it and got much more out of it. The first 2 sections were sometimes hard to follow. The author's flow of thought was sometimes choppy, or disjointed, and I didn't always connect with her train of thought. BUT the last 2 sections were a) much more positive, giving hope in the midst of the of the journey that there is a way up and out of the miry pit of despair that the old ways of thinking and living keep us trapped in. As the author says, the way forward is found in Christ Jesus ~ a way that leads from darkness to life, lies to truth, death to life. BUT we do have to die to the old habits and thought patterns and come alive to the new life that Christ has made available to those who trust and follow Him! These are ancient pathways. But they are tried and true and they help us to become renewed and transformed, as children of God in Christ Jesus.
"We know Christ came to speak life--so why does our inner critic keep showing up and stealing the mic? If we're honest, she's a harsh one, saying things we'd never dream of saying to others..."
This is for the woman who struggles against the lies that fill her head every day. This book is for the believer that feels like their spiritual growth has come to a halt. This is for the anxious, the broken and the insecure.
If you are wondering how to renew your mind as Scripture commands, pick this book up. It really is interesting how many times in church we are told to renew our minds, but rarely are we told how. Hayley has laid out the process for you in this book.
I love Hayley's honesty and vulnerability. This book is not a difficult one to read or understand, yet it is still packed with truth. I love it when authors always bring the focus back to Jesus. I wish I could give this book to every woman I know because while anxiety may not be your struggle, I am sure there is a lie you are believing that is holding you back from living the life of peace God longs to give you. Hayley gives us ammunition to fight those lies and win.
Definitely, don’t miss this one.
Thank you Zondervan for a copy and chance to be on the launch team in exchange for my honest review. I also bought a copy for myself!
So thankful for books like this -- that remind me that God's promises are true, and His goodness is not based on my ability. I've always been someone who lives very much inside her head, so I'm very familiar with the lies that can so easily entangle with my faith. This book was a healthy reminder of what it means to take thoughts captive, and replace lies with God's truth. We renew, God does the transforming, and He is faithful to complete the work. I especially loved the appendix, where she provides scripture to counterpoint the lies we believe. Recommended!
Preach to Yourself is authentic, practical, and hopeful all in one package. Occasionally Christian books written for women can feel like a cheerleader on the sidelines telling you you can do it and to pull yourself up and keep trying. Sometimes that's great, but what about when you've tried your whole life and gotten no where? That's when Preach to Yourself arrives with a fresh perspective and grounded hope – hope that says you never could try hard enough, so stop striving and rest in the peace that there's a different way - God's way, and his way works. The author challenges you to look at the things you tell yourself every day, consider some common causes, and see what's getting you hung up. She shares her experiences with humility to help guide you along the way, and then shares practical ways to move forward. Hayley Morgan weaves scripture, her own research and experiences, and neuroscience into this book, ending with a beautifully peaceful nudge toward hope that is grounded in God rather than self. This book is a must-read tool for anyone who struggles with the things they tell themselves, negative self-worth, or the gap between head knowledge and believing with faith.
Grateful that women like Hayley are leading the way in our generation. Hayley walks us thoughtfully through the process of speaking truth to ourselves and literally re-wiring our brains with the Word. Super practical and relevant!
Not exactly what I was expecting. Grounded in Scripture and excellent points. A little too academic for my taste when she goes into the workings of the brain in a scientific sense. Enjoyed the back third (application!) the best.
I started this one MONTHS ago when it came out (I was even on the launch team!) but I put it down part way through when the holidays got crazy. I finally got back to it this week and it was EXACTLY the right time for me to finish it. Don’t you love when God is totally at work orchestrating the timing of things like that? So good. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my enneagram 1 inner critic, and all the lies I repeat to myself with or without realizing it, and the ways I can be working to rework my thinking to renew my brain, and the wisdom from Hayley here is SO HELPFUL for all of that. Loved this one so much!
Definitely one I’d recommend! Does a great job of tying in psychology and the ways we think to why we need to preach the gospel to ourselves over and over again. I’ll go back to this one for sure!
In "Preach to Yourself" Hayley Morgan shares the important message of taking your thoughts captive and renewing your minds... a message that it so needed! I couldn't stop making notes from this book, and I'm looking so forward to putting the message into action.
"This book is about shining light on the mess in your head and asking God to come into it. He wants to clear out the cobwebs and replace your self-made tired bad news with the good news of Jesus." - Hayley Morgan
If you struggle with your thought-life, if you keep telling yourself bad news (I can't do it, things will never change, God doesn't love me, ETC) and you want some practical help with identifying those loops and talking back with the truth of the Lord, this book is for you. Hayley is smart, relatable, and humble, and this book will be a blessing for you. The information contained in these pages impressed me so much: the scientific information, the personal stories, and the spiritual counsel. I love when a book shares not only philosophy and theology, but solid, practical steps to apply to your life TODAY. This book gives you both. I'll be recommending it to many, many women, I know that for sure.
Some favourite quotes:
"It occurs to me that this Gap is where I uncomfortably encounter the dissonance between my head and heart. I feel like I've learned enough to be an expert on "Wild and Free". I know all the right answers. But my heart still needs a steady reminding. I had already done all the research and know all the right answers. It isn't that I need to know more or know better. It turns out I need time to sit with the knowledge, boldness to preach it to myself, and discipline to exercise the truth every chance I get."
"There is a big difference between head knowledge and embodied understanding. The first stays in the brain, while the second unfolds into the real world."
"We don't have that bone-deep belief that we want, and it causes us to live half-heartedly, settling for a watered-down, cheap counterfeit of the greatest love story of all time."
"The great news is that even though the world is not going to start spinning more slowly anytime soon, all it takes is anchoring yourself in Christ. He is the One who is, was, and always will be. You get to become more like him as you grow, and quiet, calm minds are fruit of abiding in Him. You're not left spinning on your own. You have a Holy Helper who is outside of time and space to slow your spinning and to walk with you in all your days to come." Many of us would say we are our own worst critic. We preach to ourselves every single day -- the question is, though, what are we preaching? Truth or lies? In her most recent book, Hayley focuses on choosing to be mindful of what our inner critic is saying, and to learn to replace lies with truth.
Hayley focuses a lot on one particular lie, which is the one she says she struggles with the most: 'I can't do this.' Although that's certainly a thought many of us (including myself) have, I wouldn't say it's the one that is loudest in my life. If it is in yours, this book will likely be a practical, relatable, and helpful tool. But if it's not what your inner critic says, you may struggle to relate with many of the sections in this book, as they're specifically tied to this particular thought.
Overall, I liked the book and think it's a message that needs to be shared. It starts an important conversation, but for me at least, there's something missing. It isn't the best sign when you reach page 210 and think "that's it?" but I also recognize that because it's geared toward one particular lie, it just might not have been the book for me.
This isn't one I'll read again, but I definitely see myself referring to the appendix of "real truth for bad news loops" in the future.
this book is chalk full of so many good nuggets and it’s not a read you should try to finish in one sitting. it’s more of a guide with SO many key truths to devour and digest and jot down and sit with and pray about. she talks about our brains, the importance of taking our thoughts captive, how to turn off bad news feedback loops, what it looks like to replace lies with sound truths and the vital call we have to renew our minds and to renew them well. i savor many things from this book, but perhaps the most impactful one that sticks with me is around Romans 12:2 being an “if-then” statement. IF we renew our minds, THEN we WILL be transformed. that’s both an invitation and a promise in certainty that i’m grateful to be reminded of. “You renew; God transforms.” the surrender, the intentionality to renew our minds, the posture to take our thoughts captive and reset them with sound truths is wildly necessary and even more relevant in this time. if you’re looking for some tangible truths to boost your long-haul spiritual rhythms in the work of renewing your mind and walking in the beauty of obedience, this book is a great resource. thanks for writing this @hayley.e.morgan ♥
Something I've really been challenged with this past year is what I call the Paul Syndrome. Romans 7:18-20, he talks about how he does not do the good he wants to do & does the things he does not want to do. I love how Hayley explains this as the head to heart gap. We know the truths but our heart struggles to believe it.
Preach to Yourself is more than just an authors experience/stories. Hayley provides the perfect blend of tough & tender love, truth grounded in scripture & science, and she leads with vulnerability. She offers realistic steps to help us bring unity to our beliefs & our actions. She challenges us to go deep and stop applying band-aids to our situations when we start to feel stuck or things get hard and we want to give up. She teaches that these behaviors are coping mechanisms that rob us of the abundance Jesus has for us.
This is not a book that will get dusty on a shelf. This book is a tool I will continue to return to for solid guidance in days or seasons of struggle. It is a book I want every woman in my life to read!
There was a lot of (possibly unintentional) bad theology. I think had she worded things more plainly it could’ve been avoided or the errors would be more obvious. “We’re co creators with God” “ When we renew our minds He transforms us.” A lot about God changing your neural pathways (God changing your heart heb. 8:10) and the “bad news” you tell your self (your sinful thoughts).
To me it sounded like she was saying your sinful thoughts aren’t always your fault and if you try harder God will help you. I guess I was looking for something either more practical or more raw. It’s personal opinion, but I just don’t really need to be told I’m just like Wonder Woman or hear Philippians 4:13 over again. A lot of her anecdotes and examples either fell flat or didn’t make sense to me. I couldn’t link them to the rest of what she was trying to say.
I did like a few of her points and was reminded of the importance of scripture memory and also to rejoice and be Glad over the work that the Lord has done.
Preach to Yourself ? Who isn't constantly preaching to themselves? I know I am daily. Why? We are all often our own worst critic. This is for any woman who struggles with lies that fill her head daily. This is for the anxious, the insecure, the broken, the one who is hopeless or the one who maybe has given up on a dream. Haley tackles negative self-talk and how we need to renew our minds daily.
This is one of those books that can be a great tool to use over and over again. One to be visited for different seasons. It speaks truth in grace with love and allows us to see ourselves the way God sees us. This book gives us a healthy view of the way we should think about our thought life and how much time we spend with our thoughts. This book is one that I recommend spending a lot of time in as it brings freedom. I give this book 5/5 stars. I found this book to be so helpful and very informative. Life changing, really.
This is a tough one to rate because I like the overall concept of the book. Who wouldn't want to overcome the lies we have heard as a child (or even in adulthood) that hold us back from being the best version of ourselves? I think this message SHOULD be shared and I do think there are biblical truths that point to us being created for a purpose and in a unique way that makes our path different than someone else.
But the book offers lots of questions in the beginning and no real answers until about halfway through. So you have to hang in there! Then, when I was done I felt like "that's it???". It wasn't very deep.
I think I liked that the book is great for starting some tough conversations. I'm glad I did it as a study with a group of women who could share their personal input and stories since I don't feel like the author had enough insight. Overall, the book felt a bit surfaced and anecdotal. So, by the end, it didn't feel like the book lived up to its title.
As an enneagram 1 I have the loudest inner critic so I was pumped to read this book.
This line in ch.2 hit home, “instead of having ordered and disciplined minds, we’ve become accustomed to that high-paced back-and-forth. we’re used to arguing with ourselves amid our own mental civil war. This is not what we want, but this is what we do.” It’s time to break the cycle of doubting yourself and take God at his word.
Hayley writes in such a beautiful, honest, and powerful way to talk about what many of us struggle with, believing the good news over our inner critic. Hayley has such a beautiful way of share the hard truths and giving you solutions and showing you how as a believer Jesus wants us to win and wants us to live an abundant life with Him.
Preach to yourself fell flat for me. While there were some really great and practical tips peppered throughout, it wasn't new information for me. I have read other books about this same topic that I think did a much better job. I appreciate the authors authenticity but in the end, she focused on one main lie that she tells herself which is "I can't do this!" This isn't the lie that I struggle with. This isn't a book that I would pick up again because in my opinion their are much better options to read to stop the negative feedback loops (i.e. Deliver Me From Negative Self-Talk by Lynn Davis, Winning the War in Your Mind by Craig Groeschel, You're Not Enough (and that's okay) by Allie Beth Stuckey, & Atomic Habits by James Clear...just to name a few).
Hayley is honest and straightforward. This is a refreshing approach from a writer dealing with the topic of self-talk. I have found writers will not always be vulnerable themselves, allowing the reader to know their own thoughts and struggles, when trying to help others...and writers like that are not worth reading. Reading Hayley’s words is like sitting at a table sharing with a friend over coffee. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever struggled with their inner critic and wants to know how to quiet that voice and listen to Holy Spirit instead to embrace who God has uniquely created them to be.
There is freedom in awareness, and Hayley Morgan offers just that in her new book Preach To Yourself. The author provides insight into a territory that is widely uncharted by the faith community. Through the integration of scripture and neuroscience, Morgan reveals the intrinsic connection between the heart and mind, thoughts and behaviors, and how they influence our daily lives. This book is a must read for any woman (or man) that struggles with self-doubt, negative self-talk, or simply wants to move their faith from knowing to understanding.
This book is incredibly helpful for anyone who listens to their inner critic, but especially for someone who struggles with anxiety. Hayley powerfully teaches the truth about our ability to change the way our minds work by retraining our brains. With a combination of story, scripture, and neuroscience, she gives readers practical steps to take to learn to preach truth to themselves and overwrite the fear, worries, and lies that loop in our minds.
After reading this book, I feel inspired and empowered to change the way I think, and grounded in the promise that God will transform me.
I read a good bit, and even read a fair amount of nonfiction/Christian women books. Once or twice a year I read a book that I know I will be talking about for a long time. Preach to Yourself is one of those. I’ve already read through the whole thing once, and now I’m planning to reread it more slowly to make sure I’m processing it and applying it. Hayley’s writing often makes me exhale a sigh of relief from feeling both understood and encouraged. If you are feeling discouraged and overwhelmed, I think this is a book you would love.
I came to know Hayley through her previous books, and on instagram. And honestly, it's been a long while since I've found a voice that speaks to me as a real, modern-day woman and also speaks boldly about the truth of Christ in us. I'm so thankful that her words in this book are dedicated to us knowing the truths God has promised, and knowing them with our own voices. We can teach one another and we can teach ourselves, because we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Thankful as always for this good sister. Her words will be your friend.
This book is a gem. I loved Hayley's transparency and heart. The ability to navigate life is full of challenges but one of the tools God has given us is the ability to preach the full Gospel to ourselves. This book gave me timely language and thoughts that I've been thinking on for quite some time.
Loved the practical insights. What impacted me the most is when she shared on Psalms 42 and how the Psalmist preached to himself. What a beautiful reminder to know that we believe but man do we ever have to continue to preach to that unbelief.
At the close of the book, the author writes, “When we close the integrity gap between our false beliefs and the real-life, good-news truth, we see profound fruit.” To me, this is the bare bones take away of the book. Through reading each of the short chapters dispersed into four parts, you learn to recognize common integrity gaps, how they show up in your life and how to close them. This isn’t an open and shut how-to book; the author makes it clear this a constant journey, but it’s worth the work.
Preach To Yourself is the gentle, yet firm reminder all women need. We believe little lies the world whispers in our ears or that our brains tricks us into accepting. Hayley reminds us to go to God’s Word to combat those lies and to walk freely in His truth daily. Hayley writes openly and conversationally to encourage women and point them back to Jesus for their confidence and self worth. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time and highly recommend it!
Hayley Morgan's new book is a must read for anyone who struggles to hear the voice of God above the voice of their inner critic. It's filled with biblically-based truth about the power we have to fight back against the lies of Satan. Don't stay stuck in lies that aren't serving you, follow this guide to holding every thought captive and seeing God bring transformation to your heart, mind and soul.
