Relentless: Unleashing a Life of Purpose, Grit, and Faith

Rate this book
John Tesh has achieved more in life than he ever dreamed possible. But the road to success has been anything but easy—and those challenges have become the secret to his success. Through his story, we can learn how to be relentless, how to achieve what we didn’t think was possible, and how to handle our inevitable discouragements. Relentless will show you how to… In this engrossing memoir, Tesh describes how the obstacles that shaped him—including being suspended from college, living homeless for months, and facing a deadly disease—shaped his remarkable life. You’ll hear, in never-before-told stories, how Tesh became the youngest correspondent at WCBS News less than thirty-six months after he was working at a gas station and sleeping in a public park. You’ll go inside the unconventional way he composed the now-iconic theme song for NBC Sports basketball and how he and his wife, Connie Sellecca, created the popular, nationally-syndicated Intelligence for Your Life radio program. From live commentary for two Olympic Games to his decade-long role as co-host of Entertainment Tonight and the outrageous gamble that resulted in one of the most successful Public Television concert specials in history, you’ll learn how Tesh applied his unique process of focused practice, grit, and perseverance while maintaining a single-minded pursuit of his goals. In 2015, he fought and received treatment for a stage-three cancer diagnosis, but when the cancer returned, he and his wife turned to relentless faith and divine healing scriptures to manifest a victory over the disease. Relentless is an astonishing story of how obstacles create opportunity and how faith will lead to triumph

John Tesh has had a full and interesting life. He has experienced fame and challenges, highs and lows, that most of us won't. From celebrity status to homeless person, musician to cancer warrior/survivor, he has a lot to tell in this, his memoir.

(There are scripture and prayer references in it occasionally, but to me it seemed like it was mostly about John's life and television experiences).

I might have enjoyed this book more if I could relate to the celebrity and television stories and references in it.

Decent read, would be great for John Tesh fans who want to know more about John's life.

I enjoyed reading this book more than I had expected (and I expected to enjoy it!) but I have some problems with it.

I'm 29, and I first heard of John Tesh because of his Intelligence for Your Life radio show. I didn't even know he was famous for anything else (sorry!). ;-) However, I enjoyed his radio show SO much, that I started listening to the podcast soon after it was launched. In the podcast episodes, he talked about his life and his cancer journey. So, although I did learn more than I expected from this book, I already knew a *lot* about his life.

Here's my main problem with this book: I am a Christian, and I *absolutely* believe in God's power to heal. However, I think it's our responsibility to take responsible action. From what I know, John Tesh did that, complying with his doctors' recommendations, and also switching to a ketogenic diet (which is NOT mentioned in the book, but he talked about it on his podcast). BUT, this book ends with him walking out of an appointment with a doctor, seemingly deciding to abandon the recommended treatment plan, "Because I knew that I knew that I knew, with the deepest conviction, that I was healed". Again, his decision to try a radical diet change is not even *mentioned*, besides the fact that at that point he had already undergone surgery and chemotherapy.

I feel like that's misleading and dangerous. I worry that someone will read this book and decide to forgo treatment for their illness and instead try to pray their way to healing.

Things I liked about the book: I was not expecting it to have so much discussion of spiritual things. I'm a little uncomfortable with some of (what I think are) the implications of much of what he says. Sometimes he sounds like everyone can be healed if they just have enough faith, and if you're not healed you didn't have enough faith. He doesn't come out and say that, but like I said, it seems like the obvious implication.

So, I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but it was very thought provoking, and definitely a different way to look at things. He mentions multiple times that we need to speak to our problem in Jesus' name, and not "complain" to God about our problems.

I liked this different perspective: "We would hear that oft-used phrase 'God won't give you anything you cannot handle' (that's not in the Bible, by the way), and naturally figure that whatever hardship we were facing was there for a reason. It was somehow a test that God had put before us. . . . I was becoming convinced that prayer is not trying to twist God's arm to make Him do something. It is becoming settled in my heart that God wants me healthy and well. That He wants me to prosper in all things. And that it has always been this way. That's why Jesus went to the cross. He took our sins. He took our sicknesses. "By his stripes you were healed." (1 Peter 2:24)" (I'm still not sure how I feel about that application of 1 Peter 2:24.)

As a fan of his radio show and podcast, it was interesting to hear more about his life, and some of the highlights of his career.

So, overall, I enjoyed this book, but I wish he'd been more forthcoming about how he beat cancer.

I received a free copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

Inspiring read

Atheists and agnostics could especially benefit and learn from this great man of faith. Psalm 118:8: It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. John Tesh was put on this earth to be a messenger. He touches and improves the lives of millions daily and hopefully millions more with this awesome memoir with something for everyone and its timing could not be better.

I started this as an audiobook, got a print copy as that's the way I prefer to read, and finished it as an audiobook while on vacation. The benefit of listening is hearing John narrate with his deep voice, and I enjoyed his family stories, particularly how he met his wife and her son from a prior marriage, and how they all went on to intervene in helping his wife's brother. I loved reading a physical book to connect with many scriptural ideas passed on by John. He's an interesting, unconventional, inspiring person.

I was so excited about it coming out in February this year and then I couldn't find it.
I was a bit disappointed because I had expected it to be about his bout with cancer and his faith but it was more about his career and family. All good and interesting, nonetheless.

I graciously received a free copy through first reads.

So first and foremost, I did not understand the point of this book. Was it to lean more into my faith? Instead, this felt like some guy just bragging about his life. Yes, he had a couple stumbles, but because he was a white guy living in the US, he was able to get right back up due to the people around him. Does he give them enough credit? No. I rather have read a book from his wife about how she got where she was and then had to deal with an arrogant (at least he admits in the book he is) husband. Do I believe Tesh put in tons of work to get where he is? Definitely, but even as he mentions, many others do as well and don't get where he is, so once again, I put this onto the people in his life that gave him opportunities when he probably didn't deserve them at times. Another downfall was that he named dropped his mentors throughout the book, but then when it came to faith, he doesn't have any stories about pastors talking or helping him? Did he not seek guidance? Maybe he felt like he could just lead himself in faith just like he believes he didn't need experience in teaching health or staging an intervention. So while I'm happy that his life turned out well for him, no, I would not recommend this book.

This feedback is done courtesy of Net Galley for giving me a sneak peak before being published.

I'm not exactly a fan of self-help books, and worst of all those which cherry pick some Bible passages to support their views, and unfortunately I found Relentless to be exactly that. Indeed, he's desire is to encourage people to be determined to success, with help/faith in God, but as he communicates his story, it appears that as individuals we are the Sovereigns and determinants of how our lives will end up looking like, and of which any serious student of the Bible knows isn't so. So, in short, I'm saying that this book isn't Gospel-centric in nature, no matter how many verses of the Bible it contains.

Not my favorite “self help” if you will. I’m a huge fan which is why I gave it a whirl. The last 45 minutes or so of the actual book was where I truly was grabbed. I think I was looking for more references and how he applied it. Although I felt distracted throughout, I will say his book did reach me as I spent most of it reflecting on my own life, I guess the whole reason for these types of books.

Reckless, irresponsible, preachy non-memoir that is an attempt to sway readers to a lop-sided spiritual viewpoint and includes almost nothing about Tesh's personal life. This is a truly disappointing book that only has a few good things in it that focus on career, but most of it is Tesh bragging about his inappropriate choices or his non-stop bugging people to do things his way. He calls himself relentless, I (and it sounds like many others) call him obnoxious.

From the start the book is poorly written. He claims in the introduction to be a consumer of memoirs and therefore has written his the way he would like others to write. That's no surprise--his gigantic ego runs throughout the book. He also states that a good memoir is about helping people see themselves in it. False. A good memoir is one that is open and honest about the subject's highs and lows, tearing down the wall that the celebrity has erected. We don't get any of that in this book. Instead we get his non-stop preaching at us, trying real hard to make us learn from what he considers an amazingly successful life.

But he needs a serious dose of reality--the book is a mess. He chooses to mix his last few years fighting prostate cancer with stories about his career choices. Some chapters are dated, others aren't, so his timeline is confusing and he skips big chunks of his life. It detracts from his career and his medical issues instead of having a solid impact on the reader.

He also skips over just about anything we'd really be interested in. He mentions nothing about being Eagle Scout, a foreign exchange student, dating, being married to a first wife, doing drugs, having sex, or his relationship with Oprah Winfrey when they both worked in Nashville (Kitty Kelley's book claims they slept together).

I didn't need to read another chapter on how he recklessly would "dream big" and force himself into a new job. He claims he was being relentless--but that's only the perspective from the selfish guy that is pushing his way to the top. He says almost nothing about how his choices negatively impacted anyone else, such as co-workers, his parents, his first marriage, his second wife, his stepson, his daughter. Tesh just pretends that his life is a fairy tale that he made happen by being obnoxious, untruthful, and pushy.

Bottom line is the guy was from a well-off family, blew many of his young opportunities, got kicked out of college after lying and forging a professor's signature, continued to lie in order to work himself up in his career and even lied to meet his second wife. There is nothing admirable about this guy and I had to keep wondering how he became successful when he had no training, no education in the field, and kept getting promoted young. I suspect there are secret stories there from the early years that we're not seeing on paper, because he just isn't that talented to go from college dropout to major market TV anchor in a couple years.

Even his Christian twist, where Connie Sellecca brought him to church when they started dating, is vague--he doesn't actually say when he became a real Christian and once he starts spewing the gospel it is totally distorted into a prosperity version, where health and wealth are promised by Jesus if you just believe hard enough!

He has a number of mistaken "facts" in the book, he twists all the stories to make him look good (including an inexplainable unnecessary chapter on his druggie brother-in-law), and the theology near the end is a mess. He repeatedly quotes Mark 11:23 where Jesus says, "Whoever says to this mountain be removed and cast into the sea...he will have whatever he says," using it as Tesh's foundation for rejecting another round of cancer treatment and only commanding the cancer to come out of his body. He says that you should "speak to your problem, not speak to God about the problem." That's a complete misreading of the New Testament and a distortion of the verse he quotes as his foundation. The very next verse (Mark 11:24) says "when you pray" and the next (Mark 11:25) says "whenever you stand praying." Jesus isn't talking about praying to the mountain but praying to God about the mountain!

So reality is that you need to both speak to God and speak to the problem. Tesh mentions prayer, but to him it is speaking in tongues. He says, "When you learn to pray in the Spirit, perhaps in your own special language, it will be jet fuel to your life."

I feel for John Tesh--what he has gone through the past three years with cancer and chemo and treatments and hospitalizations is something I would not wish on anyone. And I do admire him for fighting the battle to stay alive, because he does have positive things to say about his family (though almost everything in the book related to his family has to do with his career success!).

This is not a memoir--it's merely a career overview that reads like a long PR bio, mixed in with bad theology that could mislead some into thinking that God is calling them to abandon the medical community. This guy is reckless, not relentless. He fails to see that his selfish, pushy, "high octane" choices along the way could have been the very things that fueled the cancer cells in his body. He should be preaching a message about backing off career, thinking more of others, preaching a full gospel that includes the beatitudes ("Blessed are the poor..."), and being totally honest as the way to true healing.

John Tesh is a very recognizable face from television past. He was one of the co-hosts of Entertainment Tonight from the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties. Teaming with fellow host Mary Hart, the two were responsible for dishing out celebrity news and gossip.
RELENTLESS is about much more than that. John talks in detail about his battle with prostate cancer, that as the medical world thought, was his death sentence. He was given barely eighteen months to live, worried more about getting all his affairs in order.
He planned on dying, but through medical intervention and deep faith, he became cancer free, ready to live life again to the fullest.
It has not always been a smooth road for Tesh. He was homeless at one time, be-fore getting his first on-air jobs at smaller radio stations in Raleigh, Orlando, and Nashville. He was the youngest reporter at CBS News, heading to Europe for six years to be a CBS reporter there. And that was when Entertainment Tonight came calling. While at ET, he had to take a course in body language because it seemed he was not relating to Mary Hart as he should.
He also talks about his infatuation with now wife Connie Selleca, trying to get a date with her. It worked, and they have been married for almost thirty years. Music is now his biggest passion, and his series of Live At Red Rocks concerts on PBS, has raised millions for the network. It has created millions in record sales as well. Tesh also hosts the popular radio show Intelligence For Your Life, heard on 350 stations, with over fourteen million listeners.
John Tesh has had quite the life, many would be envious of. RELENTLESS talks candidly about progressing positively every step of the way.

Amazing life story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. One always thinks people with fame and fortune have had it easy but it often is not the case,as is John Tesh's journey. His faith in God and trusting in Him to lead his path along with sheer determination and hard times, hard work, led him to success. This is a book that once you start is hard to put down. He includes how he and his wife Connie Selleca met and how she helped lead him to a true relationship with Jesus Christ. He is not being preachy but includes some of their favorite verses and how that has helped him through tough times and a cancer diagnosis. How he now listens to that ''still, inner voice'' and how it eventually led him back to music and the life he was meant to live. There really are no coincidences and he tells how obstacles that were put in his path were soon removed. It is a great testimony to his and Connie's lasting relationship, his career and his Christian life. Great book!
I received an Advanced reader copy of the book and was under no obligation to provide a review. The opinions expressed are my own. Many thanks to John Tesh, the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

As far as stories go John Trsh certainly has an interesting one. As far as memoirs go I found it disjointed and some parts I couldn’t quite figure out why they were included and others why they were missing (did he reconcile with his parents? How? He mentioned once later in the book yet no mention of how he got to that point). I personally believe that whatever faith you have can be powerful and I believe we create our own reality through our beliefs. Though I do not mind people having a religious base to their beliefs I don’t particularly like when I feel preached to- down to quoting over (the same ones) and over again bible verses. I felt a little preached to at times. And though I enjoyed much of this I felt like a better editing job could have smoothed this out. Still an interesting read nevertheless.

You may have wondered what John Tesh was like before ET. He was an ordinary child. He did things typical boys do. He also did things you'll be surprised at. The book gives you a look at the past and how it shaped the present. You will be moved by how his private and professional life came together. A lot of prayer and luck.

I found this book engaging and brutally honest. When you being this book, you'll feel as though you are carrying on a conversation with Mr. Tesh. This book will touch your heart and soul. You will have all the feels. I highly recommend this book. If you know Mr. Tesh personally, you'll be shaking your head. If you only know him from ET or his music, you'll be astounded.

I found no issues here.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it's such compelling reading.

Inspirational!

In his introduction, John Tesh wrote that everyone would find something that they had in common with his story. I did not find that until later in his story, when he wrote about the Holy Spirit's proddings to take unlikely but inspired actions, which resulted in great success. I have also experienced those moments. He backs up those moments with explanations and Scriptures to show that it wasn't his ideas but God moments. He acted and achieved great success. I too have achieved success in my own small way when I acted on those God moments. I recommend this book highly to everyone!

Relentless by John Tesh is a memoir of his life. I remember him as co-host of Entertainment Tonight which cam on after the nightly news while I was growing up. John explains that fame and fortune are not always what they seem to be and those who have been successful have lived through their own journey to become who they have become. He shares his story of being a journalist, musician and husband. He gives his thanks to not only his wife and family but friends. In 2015 he was diagnosed with stage-three cancer, he turned to his faith in scriptures for healing his disease. I recommend this book to anyone who has been relentless in their own journey.

I love John's radio show "Intelligence For Your Life", so that's what drew me to this book. But the truth is that I didn't like it at all. In fact, after I read part of the intro I decided to skim the rest. I didn't want to hear his stories of surviving cancer and the stuff he went through. I admire him for writing so openly about it, I was a little uncomfortable reading it.
I read briefly about his time on Entertainment Tonight because that's where I first saw him, but it wasn't very interesting. Even the part where he talks about "Intelligence For Your Life" was just dull.
Overall a disappointment. I'll stick with his radio show.

I have been listening to John Tesh’s radio program, intelligence for your life, for the last few months. The music and living life better tidbits scattered throughout makes it an interesting listen. Anyway, I’m always interested in a life story so when he said he had a book out I put a hold on it at the library. I was surprised at how long the list of people waiting to get the book was.
He’s had a fascinating life with more twist interns than most I would say. Lots of people stepped in to help him just at the time he needed it most and he took some pretty big risks as well. That, along with a major health scare, made this book an interesting read.

Couldn't Put It Down!

I'm not a "reader" so for me to say that is something special. As a survivor myself, I found Mr. Tesh's feelings and doubts to be spot on. His style is much like his music; smooth and enjoyable. Seeing John Tesh since I was young made his unusual life descriptions all the more surprising and interesting. I certainly would never have guessed all that he went through to be the guy I saw on TV and heard on the radio. A great and inspiring read!

Younger generations know him from his variety of media shows. Older generations know him as an instant success story as a musician, and of course, host of "Entertainment Tonight" for a decade. What most will learn by reading his autobiography is through a recent cancer scare, he has used his life journey, intertwined with his faith journey, prodding that anyone can have the power to be relentless.

John Tesh is authentic. He doesn't hold back in explaining how his faith molded him into the individual he is today, through any circumstance, good and bad. Whether it be falling into jobs in his twenties which rescued him from homelessness, intervening with his brother-in-law's struggle of drug addiction, or running away from home in his sixties only to find being graciously welcomed back by his wife, those wanting to find authenticity may accidentally find themselves already being relentless.

I enjoyed this so much, not because of amazing writing skills and placement, but rather the heart behind it to share the truth of his life, good, bad and beautiful. Being bold to share his faith story is encouraging!!! I have always loved his music and have pulled it out once again too experience it through his eyes this time! If you’re a fan of his truly enjoy and learn.

Recommended by a friend, I was captivated by John’s storytelling and the way the book moved between his biography and his faith journey through cancer. He focused my attention on a new way to pray on a couple of powerful Scriptures during times of trial.

Listened to this book in one day. John Tesh read his memoir. Interesting how his career developed and his fight with Cancer. Many good bible passages to refer to over and over again. Exceptional motivational book. I borrowed this book from the library but I think I will need to purchase it.

My mom gave this to me to read. I really had my doubts, but found it encouraging and insightful. We all make mistakes, but what we learn from them and taking that information forward in life is essential for growth. This theme came up several times in the book.

The book was okay. It was billed as being about his struggles with cancer. Although that topic was discussed quite a bit, the book was really about his career and life. I enjoyed it, even though it wasn't what I thought it would be. He is an interesting person with great talents.
