Beat the Bad Guys. Take their powers. Save the world.
When Mickey stepped into that bar, he never expected to find out he was the most powerful superhero the world had ever seen.
But when footage of him beating up the strongest hero, and biggest bully, in the tristate area goes viral, suddenly the world can't get enough of him.
Now villains are challenging him, the hero society is ringing his line off the hook, and the endorsements? Well, they're second only in size to his burgeoning fan club.
And since none of their super powers work on him, he's never been closer to the top than ever before.
There's just one problem.
The world's greatest villain has returned from the dead, and he's set his sights on making Mickey his first victim.
Please Note: This novel contains a harem. You have been warned.
When New York Times Bestselling author, J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.
Super Human A Superhero Adventure By: J.A. Cipriano Narrated by: Luke Daniels Series: Super Human, Book 1 This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. This is a book that is just like listening to a comic book, a real crazy, funny comic book! Everything you would expect in a superhero comic book you would find in here. Villains, heroes, action, battles, and civilians needing help. The narrator is a hoot! So many voices! My goodness! The perfect narrator for this book! I can't believe how many voices he can do! Wow!!! I am so impressed!
Let me start by saying AGAIN that this didn’t have to be 492 pages. And from looking at the cover it looks like a YA book, which it’s not. AND, in my opinion, it SHOULDN’T have been written in the first person. There were so many heroes and villains that it would have been nice to know what they were thinking and doing. For that reason I don’t think I’ll read this author again.
At 48% I can’t read anymore. The author thinks he has to be funny on almost every page and it’s just not working. Plus, the hero, Mickey/Blue Badger is somewhat of a moron, not in the least bit funny. I was looking for something more hero-ish and less silly.
There was a lot of swearing and the F-bomb was used 6 times. There was no sex up until I quit.
As to the narration: THAT was the ONLY thing good about this book. Luke Daniels was absolutely phenomenal but even he couldn’t help this super-silly book.
Mickey is just your average, snarky, blue-collar, super-powered, trained in martial-arts regular joe..... uhhh... Yeah this is stretching it a bit. Mickey is kind of a jerk with super-powers that, kind of rolls into being a superhero and then saves, kind of the world. Kind of by accident... ohh and there is a harem somewhere in this novel.
Perhaps this just isn't the novel for me, but still things felt off despite of that. I really couldn't connect with Mickey as the MC and both the buildup as well as the climax felt dull. The whole Mickey cant't do any wrong and situations just happen to fall his way by use of his power or his snark, just got annoying after a while.
So in all, this is not a badly written novel, the characters are well wel rounded and there are plenty of jokes and a decent amount of action. Unfortunately this din't click with me.
So there you have it three stars for a decent novel, but not one I really enjoyed.
You keep using that word, I don't think it means what you think it means. 80% into the book before he has sex. No harem action at all, decent super story...but title is misleading.
SUPER HUMAN: A SUPERHERO ADVENTURE is a book which started out pretty slow and I didn't much care for the main character, Mickey being essentially Ed Sheeran's character from anything ever done by Ed Sheeran, but gradually I came to absolutely love the character as well as the world he inhabited. It's kind of a rough and tumble superhero story in the manner of Rocky or They Live with the down and out street brawler character ending up rocketing to the top of the superhero world. There's a lot of boxing motifs in the book as well and they work surprisingly well with superhero fiction.
The short version is Mickey is a mutant with an incredibly powerful ability. Specifically, he can copy or absorb the abilities of other superhumans. He's avoided becoming a superhero, though, because he's generally disdainful of them. This is despite his close friend and mentor (or perhaps because of) being one of the roughest but most goodhearted of heroes. After one famous superhero gets a little handsy with a waitress, Mickey trounces him and unwittingly propels himself to stardom as the city's newest darling.
I really liked this book and think it's probably my favorite of J.A. Cipriano's so far. Once the book got going and Mickey lost the enormous chip he had on his shoulder regarding superheroes, the book took on a sports movie-like feel and that is a peanut butter and chocolate mixture there. He has to deal with sleazy promoters, angry rivals, and beautiful women intrigued by the newest sensation.
I like Mickey because he's a flawed and believable superhero. He's not necessarily going to save everyone, especially on his first try. I also note that he has a woman fall madly in love with him after their first date, starts planing their potential relationship, then immediately gets sucked into sleeping with his childhood crush who is slightly older than him as well as much more famous. He holds out for exactly long enough to be sympathetic.
There's a lot of wild and wacky antics through the book, including a cow-headed cyborg. I think people looking for a fun superhero novel will really enjoy this one.
Disclaimer. I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator / author / publisher, in exchange for an unbiased review.
What I liked about the book - I haven't read a superhero story in a long time and thus was really excite when I picked it up. The book's comic-book cover art also looks cool. The story has all the elements you'll expect from a comic superhero book. You do have to suspend disbelieve though and roll with it. The fun and larger-than-life characters were fun and kept me entertained for the most part.
What I disliked about the book - The characters weren't convincing. While listening to the story, I didn't quite connect with any of them. All the situations they were in also sounded very implausible.
Narration - Narration was done well for the content. Different character voices were easily distinguishable.
A great fast paced superhero pulp-fiction adventure!
I really enjoyed this book. It's funny and action(y?) all rolled into one sarcastic young superhuman boxer named Mickey.
The story seems fairly unoriginal, I really get a one-punch man vibe. Mickey, or Blue Badger, is a unique super human that can steal other people's abilities and can even shut them off completely. His power alone makes him an incredibly strong opponent, but most of the time he doesn't get out of a fight unscathed. I like my hero with a side of struggle, it makes them easier to empathize with.
There was a lot of humor, some flat, but most had me smiling. There was also a lot of action, which was very well handled; Mickey's background as a boxer is perfectly choreographed.
Although the focus was Mickey, many of the background characters were interesting on their own: Vic the old retired bruiser, Gawain the flashy knight, Mean Streak the naked she-hulk. (those purple pants don't stay on in this novel.) It was a great cast of heroes to face up against the fearsome and eerily familiar Everlast.
The only downfall was the relationships. Characters seemed arbitrarily paired together, despite obvious lack of chemistry/development, simply to further the plot in an unnervingly idealized way. He gets the girl, then a super friend, then her really super friend. Just like that? Yep almost in succession.
TL;DR - If you want a great action-packed super hero thrill, look no further. Super Human didn't feel unique, but it hit the super-powered nail on the head. I absolutely recommend this and I'll be looking forward to the next in the series.
A pleasant surprise Confession time: I've passed up this book and everything by J.A. Cipriano for years because the covers look like garbage and the blurbs make it sound terrible. "Beat the Bad Guys. Take their powers. Save the world." That sounds like some extra douchey LitRPG nonsense that I just don't have the patience for. Well I finally tried it, fully expecting to DNF in chapter 3. To my very pleasant surprise I really liked this book. This may be to the masterful job that Luke Daniels did on the audiobook, or to the fact that the MC is actually a pretty well grounded kid (when women aren't involved). The descriptions of this book are misleading. It's tagged as harem -it's not. The MC seems like he's obsessed with proving his worth by stats standing and who's ass he can kick (it's almost the opposite in the book). Lastly everything about this book looks dumb, where it's pretty level headed and occasionally quite clever. There are a few way this book exceeds other super hero books, and that was a very pleasant surprise.
Mickey's been hiding his super powers, passing as a regular guy in a city overrun with heroes and their huge egos. When an arrogant hero gets handsy with a waitress, he just can't take it anymore and reveals his powers to the world. Initially branded a villain, Mickey tries to use his powers to help innocent citizens. He slowly works his way up the superhero ranks, but things get complicated when a supervillain from his past resurfaces.
This was a really fun read! I was hooked from the start, Mickey's a guy you really want to root for. His nicknames for the superheroes cracked me up each time. The whole book was action packed and really entertaining. JA Cipriano writes in a way that you can imagine everything as it happens. It had me looking for other super hero books to read! I requested a copy of the book, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review. I'd highly recommend this one for fans of the author and super hero reads.
I’ve come to really enjoy Mr. Cipriano’s books because they tend to be so much fun. However, when I was given the opportunity to read this book about superheroes, I was reluctant to read it only because I’m still on the fence about superhero books. Since the book was written solely by this author, I decided to go ahead and read it. I don’t regret a single minute of it! The book was a page-turner, there was plenty of action, the characters were interesting, and at the very end, I was gob-smacked by something I didn’t see coming, but I really should have. I was like “no way!!” I love it when that happens. If you are a fan of superheroes or this author, you will definitely love this book. (Oh, and to tell the truth, I’m still on the fence.) Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
I have been reading a lot of Cipriano's books lately and have been very entertained by them all, so when I got the chance to read his superhero story I was ready to be entertained again. Full of action, heroes, villains and quite a few funny scenes, I was hooked form the first chapter and it just got better from there. The story is about Mickey, a super passing for a normal human that got fed up with the heroes ego in the first chapter and just went crazy from there. I moaned and laughed through most of it as Mickey learns the ropes of being a hero with unusual powers. I loved how Mickey meets the heroes and many of his first interactions were a blast. I LOVED it. Mickey is so easy to like and the people he ends up meeting throughout the book are so well described I felt like I was right there beside him. Totally worth reading.
Beat the Bad Guys... Take their powers... Save the world...
A heroic, fantastic and brilliant read that left me aching for more. The author sure knows how to capture his readers' interest and attention - hook, line and sinker! I could not stop thinking of this epic read whenever I stopped reading to do other boring stuff. So grand, it was!
Holy hell! That surprise in the last few chapters! I totally did not expect that reveal but there were a few hints but still...loved it! So exciting and enjoyable.
The author kept me on my toes...anxiously awaiting for the next word, the next sentence, the next chapter. Definitely hooked on this series. This is a MUST read superhero book.
Full of superheroes, supervillains, powers, enemies, action, adventure, a harem and mad scientists.
Perfect for readers of superhero adventure harem romances.
I picked this story on Luke Daniels' merits alone, as J.A. Cipriano was a complete unknown to me. Luke Daniels' did not let me down! He thoroughly entertained me by giving a unique voice to each character, in what turned out to actually be a super(b) story! The protagonist is an absolutely affable guy, Mickey, and it turns out that he isn't what he seems, yep he's super-human... This is a lighthearted, action packed book that never takes its self too seriously. Mickey has a well developed, sarcastic sense of humor, and a weird assortment of friends that have helped prepare him for the end of the book and the fight of his life... So, while this might have been the first book I've "read" by J.A. Cipriano, I can assure you, it won't be the last! I do so hope that the sequel will be released soon!
the Mc is supposed to be in his 20' but acts like a jadded 50 year old men, only reason this guy is not dead? the bad guys always try to recruit him rather than just shoot him in the head', the female MC anger issues did not endear her to me in the least on the contrary annoyed the living heck out of me. Couldn't finish this book, and it was the audiobook version!! luke daniels make him sound like Mario Bros and the famela like as if she were possessed by Luigi, up to the point I stopped reading the only decent people are his stepdad, the one dud how cleared him of wrongdoing by posting the phone video on the internet... maybe sherlock and watson? don't know stopped when the party started' so? I do recommend this author other series The Pen is Mightier, but super heroes book? just go read D-List Supervillain by Jim Bernheimer.
Heroes and more super heroes fighting crime around the city. Fancy costumes, specialized for each one. Some fly, some don't fly, some has super strength like Mickey aka super hero Blue Badger. A super bad villain Everlasting blew up the city years ago and is back to do it again. Can Mickey 's friend Sarah help as aka Mean Streak? Who can really do anything with him? HELP! Compelling, persuasive characters and imaginative storyline. Good book! I received a complimentary copy of this book.
I like this story. The world was pretty much your standard super hero setting but the characters are all so likeable that it doesn't matter. The plot moved swiftly with characters progressing in a smooth fashion and after thinking about it I liked that twist at the end with those two characters the hints for the real natures of those two were fairly solidly set up.
This is an easy read with a likable protagonist and great pacing. The action falls apart in several places, as cliches and tropes are wedged into places they don't belong, but the flow and pacing usually keeps you reading.
Those misused tropes, and some obvious "surprises", really hurt this book. Combine with characters that are sidelined for no apparent reason, and I get my rating. Good for a free read, but I wouldn't spend money on it.
Enjoyed the story but run-on sentences and grammar mistakes kept pulling me out of the read. The narrator at times was a bit overenthusiastic which made it jarring to listen to.
Bottom line: Not a bad story, but could have used more editing. The humor didn't really add anything, but I could ignore it.
An enjoyable story set in a world where superheroes are as everyday as a cup of coffee. Would be nice if there was at least one female character who did blush or giggle... Or both. The story felt like a comic book fan's wet dream; be a hero with unique powers, become the best, get all the girls.
Nonetheless, this was a great story with a lot of humor, a lot of action, and a whole lot of puns.
I have read so many J.A. Cipriano books lately. Different than his other works and a slow starter this book, like all his writing, ended an excellent page-turner. I look forward to his next work in this series!
If you are a lover of Super Hero books then you will enjoy Super Human. The storyline is fast-paced, action-packed, full of quirky and colorful characters. This is a fun, tongue in cheek action/adventure. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
To be truthful, the beginning of the book felt slow and I had to forcefully read it some times. It only got interesting for me during the kaiji fight; after that the book was great.
Caught the book on audible a month ago, didn't really have time to listen to it right away. Had a really great time listening to it, the narrator was great, and the plot was somewhat refreshing. Cool power, somewhat over done, but the way the MC used said power made the book for me.
I really enjoyed this one. Good character development and a fun paced story with elements of suspense and a twist of surprise spaced out just right. Well done.
I really enjoyed this book. The MC is likable and not a tool or a moron. It's a little shallow story and character wise but it doesn't detract from the story at all.
Interesting story, great characters with uniques powers, good plot and kickass action throughout the book. Not too heavy on the Harem, just enough for a first book...
