This is the fourth volume featuring Will Fain, a dedicated U.S. Marshal in Texas who is asked by a federal judge in San Antonio to find Dick Muller, who murdered two Deputy U. S. Marshals. Muller, also called Pie-eyed Dick, escaped into Mexico originally but is now working on a ranch in El Paso. Fain goes to El Paso, but Muller escapes once again into Mexico. Fain takes off his badge and goes into Mexico as a bounty hunter. He finds Muller, but before he can get back over the border, he is captured by Mexican Rurales and condemned to death. Fain faces a firing squad before his deputies, Isum Wood and Del Cole, come to the rescue. An exciting new adventure from R. O. Lane, a writer of classic westerns.
Awesome! What a great read. I so enjoy reading these books about Marshall Fain and his deputies. They is action but also compassion in these books. Now for book 5. Thank you R. O. Lane for a great read.
Just when I thought Will's life couldn't get any more exciting, he has to pursue a killer into Mexico and land himself in Mexican jail awaiting an appointment for his death. Tall, strong and rugged hero, western history with an authentic flavor, and an exciting adventure plot in each new installment all told by a narrator who's a perfect fit for the series keeps me coming back for more.
This fourth installment in the Will Fain series was as non-stop action-packed as the ones before it. There are exciting gun battles that are detailed out so the reader/listener can smell the gunpowder or feel the punch. Its never easy and the cost can be high for Will and his deputies which adds a level of emotion and suspense to it all. My heart was in my throat so many times listening to this one.
There isn't much down time between action sequences, but times of introspection are there and developed well. Character development does not suffer just because these are fast moving stories that leap from one case or adventure to another. The author gives his tough fighting marshal, Will, and his deputies, Isum, Del, and to a lesser extent, Alpha thoughts, dreams, and home lives so they are more than cardboard figures.
Will and his wife have a beautiful relationship and it has grown from the first book. Virginia is a charming, generous lady, but she is also a tough, intelligent frontier woman who is partner to Will. She exhibits quiet strength in sending him off on deadly assignments and then keeps things running on the ranch and with their growing family. It's neat seeing him consult her and share with her and she, with him.
The historical backdrop and Texas/Mexico setting provided shows the author did meticulous research and deftly adds it into each scene so the reader/listener absorbs it right along with the story. The story runs through my mind like a movie. It's fun when there are moments in the story where true events are noted or the author slips in real life characters.
As to the narrator, A.T. Chandler continues to narrate this series. His deep, rich, and rustic voice with its western flavor is an ideal match for the stories. Each character no matter accent or social strata is distinct and he handles women's and children's voice superbly. I like that his voice fluctuates with mood and pace, but there is no distraction from over acting. I hope to get more of his work.
All in all, it was another fabulous entry in the series. This felt like it wrapped things up, but I know for a fact that there are more so I will eagerly await the next release on audio. Those who enjoy old-style westerns or frontier stories should definitely give this series a go.
My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.
This adventures of U.S. Marshals Will Fain and Deputy Marshals Isum Wood, Del Cole are men you want beside you as you track down these notorious bushwackers who haven't any moral ethics. This adventure shows how these U.S.Marshals hone their skills staying alive. There's human trafficking and how these Marshals deal with it. These men face a lot human misery and decadence during their lifetime as lawmen. They all have strong women who face the fact every time their men leave on an assignment, which could be their last, they send them with their love and prays that they aren't killed or maimed during their missions. R. O. Lane the author of the Will Fain, U. S. Marshal series, I love the series; I feel that a lot of the author's moral sensibilities are incorporated in the writing of their characters and plots. Will Fain is a fair man, who treats people close to him, as family. He started a bank account for Isum Wood and the monies that he earned from rewards, he splits it accordingly. The Afro-Americans and the Mexicans did not have access to what was the normal way of life for Whites such as hotel rooms or shopping in town for basics. Isum son is attending Howard University in Washington, D.C. an all Black university, studying to become a lawyer. Isum was able to take of his family financially because of Will Fain's fairness. EQUALITY EQUALITY and RESPECT FOR YOUR FELLOW MAN...This is what how I feel about this author..
Will pursues a wanted criminal into Mexico where he is challenged by Mexican authorities. He captures the criminal but is captured himself and sentenced to death. Isum and Del are both Deputy US Marshals and follow Will. They were able to overcome the death squad escape Mexico with the criminal. Will had learned that there was a human trafficking ring supplying young girls to the brothels. The ring is so widespread that Will recruits volunteers from the local military base. In the meantime, assassins from Mexico have followed the three marshals across the US border. There is much action and fast paced gun play as they take out the assassins. With the help of the Calvary, the marshals are able to arrest everyone involved in human trafficking and with the help of visiting judge they were sentenced to many years in prison and a few were sentenced to death.
Will has been away from home for two months and is very anxious to return to his family. He is determined to change his life and move his family closer to Virginia's parents home. After purchasing land he invites Isum, Del and Alpha and they all relocate to their new home. The characters are realistic and very human. The good guys are really good and the bad guys are really bad. R O Lane continues to capture attention and page turning action in a memorable story. This series reveals the growth and maturity of Will, his family and his deputies.
As the other three stories this one is most definitely another outstanding masterpiece. I am certainly hooked on Will Fain and his colleagues, as they never cease to amaze me with their actions. These stories definitely reach out and grabs the reader immediately and there is never ending adventure at the end of line.
Most definitely a five star extravaganza, with a very heartwarming and somewhat entertaining episodes that leaves the reader breathlessness.
I have become infatuated with the author's uncanny abilities to maintain my undivided attention throughout the entire story and his ability to always provide exciting storytelling and gunplay.
The storylines and characters always provide exciting situations where the reader is certainly blessed with a family-friendly story of activities, and every episode is definitely worthy of following.
I, most certainly, recommend this book, and the entire series, to all readers loving a very descriptive epilogue of our old western adventures. The author goes above and beyond with his extraordinary writing abilities and never ceases to amaze me with his apparent research and development of his wonderful stories. Please don't miss this series,or the loss will most definitely be yours!
It was okay. However having read the first four books I'm a little confused. In book one Virginia was a starving down on her luck widow . Well that happens. Especially in the old west I'm sure.
In book 3 we find she has a large extended family living in the same state. Her parents appear to be successful farmers. Her loving sisters live in the area and they all live near a town which is large enough to support a rail station so she most probably could have found work. Why not go back home? Don't tell me pride. Home is where when you have to go there they have to take you in. I'd hardly let my kids go hungry if my father had a field full of food. But what do I know. Virginia is back in the bosom of her warm and loving family. She's married to a man with the midas touch who is hardly ever home and when he is spends the short time there telling her what a goddess she is and how lucky he is to have her. If her luck holds its only a matter of time until Will gets his brains blown out and she'll be a rich widow. I'm betting her next husband is a banker. But I could be wrong
R.O. Lane successfully earned all 5 STARS again with Will.Fain, US Marshal Book 4 in one of his top & engaging series. The storyline like the previous books in this series are intense with shoot-em-up action plus filled with both romantic & family love. Further, these US Marshals have a bond as friends that even some family members don't have. They always have each others backs & will travel through hell for them. Plus they support each others families if they need too.
As the reader, I felt like I was right there riding with Will or one of his deputies on their missions. Going on he is a fair boss both in attitude & sharing rewards & fines with his deputies. that helped in the capture of that criminal.

If it were possible to give a 10 star rating it would still be too low ! R. O. Lane tells each story in such a way that you get wrapped up and lose track of time. If you didn't look up once in a while and see your own place you'd swear you were a first hand observer, part of the story itself... the characters are larger than life, and at least with Fain and his deputies, live by the same code as my old time cowboy friends.
Pick up any book by Lane - you won't go wrong and you'll be left wanting more !
It takes a lot for me to reread a book. Samuel Clemens for use of language, Francine Rivers for complex characters and unusual redemption endings. R.L. Stevenson whose writings we memorized as I read them to my children and grandchildren. And that's the the overall reactions I have to most of Mr. Lane's stories. Family, honesty, justice, and generosity to others. We certainly can't find much of those qualities from our current culture. You'd find yourself content and realizing more peace if you spent the evening with one of these books.
The 4th Installment of the U.S. Marshal Will Fain's Trials and Tribulations
RIO has not disappointed this reader with the 4th book of Will Fain. The Marsha was challenged in his side trip into Mexico. However, he and his Deputies overcame the odds. As they did in rescuing the young women from prostitution. The move was for the family and friends. This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER
All your books are so good I can't put them down.T book is a great read keeps you in suspense all the way till the end. all the characters are real believable and good families and bad outlaws I like that these books carry on from one book to the next and you feel like you know the whole family
Especially I love the main marshal Will Cain and his family Then he has such great deputies to help him get the b as d guys.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, in the back of my mind I could see this most exciting series coming to an end. Will Fain, is a no nonsense kind of lawman that always gets the job done. Will can find himself in the most precarious situations at times but always manages do come out on top. You cowboys enjoy this book while I head off to the computer for another great story about Will Fain. So, "Giddy Up."
The series is best if read sequentially. I hadn't realized that when I came across the series. The development of the various continuing characters is well done. These u.s. marshals lead an interesting life in the post civil war southwest.
The author comes up with realistic situations and ties up nearly all loose ends except for tales that reappear.
Love all these original and well written westerns by everyone’s favorite Marshall, Will Fain. Always enjoy how author Lane interject Will’s practical business acumen, family and tenacity in capturing the bad guys. This is his best book out of the first four volumes. Suggestion: please add audible, whisper sync immersive reading to the other 4 volumes.
Enjoying this series very much, this is another great Western from R.O.Lane! This one has numerous exciting moments for those who love a good Western yarn. Full of good guys hunting down bad guys, international action below the border and some great news for the Fain family! In this one Will even shows he is not invincible and has to depend on his friends and deputies to get him out of hot water. A great read!
Mr. Lane, I love your work.I have read William Johnstone for years and have collected over the years, with Preacher and my favorite Smoke Jensen who i compare to Will Fain. I have read all 5 of your books and would hope that if you have others, I get to read them. Further, hope you continue will fain. I am a fan.
Chose that rating because this is the best book I've read, bar none. The excitement and the softer side of Will is so good. There was nothing I disliked about this read. Would recommend this book and all other books by this amazing author. Thank you Mr. Lane.
This was an exceptionally great book as well as all the other books in this series. Loved all of the action and suspense in this storyline. What makes this book as well of all the other books is the great love stories and the brotherhood of these U.S. Marshals. I highly recommend this book and this series to all of your readers.
I think another review is probably redundant as many have offered their opinion of the book. However I am a fan of the western genre and I just wanted to say the series are my kind of western novels. They are almost impossible to put down the characters are special and they have real lives and romantic adventures as well as just shooting. I am always concerned and worried that R.O. Lane will bump off a main character or two. Hopefully not soon. RO Lane are you listening.
I am a new fan of R. O. Lane. His mix of Marshalling and family life are great. His characters come to life off the written page. The Marshal work is filled with realistic action. Fain's family feels warm and real. Reading Fain experiences are fun and interest grabbing for me.
With all that’s going on around the world I’m so glad that I can pick up a book and lose myself for a few hours in another time/world ,the story lines in this particular book series has really got me so relaxed time seems to fly ,keep up the good work all you western writers
Can't help but appreciate and admire the characters Lane puts in Fain's circle of deputies. When outlaws got Isum (a former Buffalo soldier) to recon with, well ... they got real big a problem. Del is another wild card of Fain's who stands his ground and then takes more. Another good book in the series that brings us back for more cleanup in the old West. On to number 5! PKB
Love how easy it is to identify with the characters in the story. I can quickly get lost in the mystery, frustration and later, the satisfaction of doing what's right and just. Lots of action without putting the story on hold. Looking for the next tale...
A sprinkle of all the things I like in a historical novel!
Good story line, historically factual, clean romance, good character insight, fast moving, enjoyable all the way through. Light reading without being nonsensical.
Guess I'm going to have to find #1, #2 and #3. Excellent writing, fast and exciting pace too! I am very pleased to discover another new to me author who writes so well.
I have now read all 4 of the Will Fain books and hope there are more. I am a great fan of your work. Great characters, great subject matter. Keep up the great writing.
Interesting and thrilling from start to finish. The characters are well described and especially the main ones are fully involved in the frequent action. All four books are first rate. I found that I didn’t want things to end and downloaded all after the first
I have enjoyed the Will Gain series, so much so that I have already acquired book 5 in the series. R. O. Lane has become one of my favorite authors. Keep an coming
Great writing. Get the feel of the characters. The scenes and story line fit for a strong western. The varied interest of the key players made the story believable for the time. Highly recommend.
