Henrietta C. Logan or HC as she prefers to be called, is sent on a mission. She must discover who the Summoner of a demon is who has been unleashed at a high school in Montana.
Logan's employer/mentor, Mr. Knatt, a friend of her father, Charles Logan, has been training her since she was just a small girl. Now, he is deadly, coldly British and seriously in charge of her life.
The greatest part of this book is that the characters, both young adults and grown, are totally relatable. Tess Adair handles sensitive subjects like childhood neglect, gender fluidity and sexual assault in a straight forward manner while entwining them in an exciting, scary and ultimately triumphant plot.
Shadow Summoner is the first book in the series and promises to much more magic to be revealed in the following books. I highly recommend it.
I cannot recommend this book enough. It's a great detective story, but the murderer's weapon of choice is a demon! Good storytelling. I love this new heroine too. She rides a motorcycle and drinks coffee like any good detective worth her salt, but she also has a few super-human skills that are intriguing. Good writing too - reminds me of some of the best mystery writers, who don't miss the small stuff like what the room feels like or how the murder suspects look or what the food tastes like. These are the details of good storytelling, and Adair gets them right. Plus she throws in the Choronzon Key for added mystery, but I guess I'l have to wait for the next book to know more about what that is. I just loved this book.
This book was a super enjoyable paranormal mystery read that gave me a bit of Veronica Mars vibes with the undercover counseling at a high school. The pacing was great and kept my interest the entire time.
While we did get a glimpse of Logan's personal history and background growing up, I do wish that the book had explained more about the realm of the Other Side, the Choronzon Key itself, and the eira vs letha magic system. It's implied that Logan knows a lot more about all of those topics than was revealed in the story.
The book wrapped up nicely and gave a good introduction as to the contents of the next book in the series.
Girls are in danger at a small high school and they need help. Logan is sent in as a grief counselor and begins to question what has happened. She knows it is a magical being, but looks for a deeper understanding of what she faces. Judith Li, a high school student helps distract the monster with a magic blast and attaches herself to the hunt. Judith helps answer important question, but refuses to step out of the danger area. Can the stop the creature before it turns on the self-trained magician? This is a book with intense fight scenes and insight into the characters introduced in the story. It has an easy flow to the plot that I enjoyed.
I really enjoyed this. This was a really well written, well plotted mystery with paranormal intrigue. The main character Logan was interesting and has layers and although she was an odd duck - she was really likable. I loved Judith as well and was excited to see the friendship of sorts develop between them. The mystery itself was fairly predictable but the journey to get there was solid. The paranormal elements are riveting and I really want to know more about Logan's genetic history as well as her childhood. Great read. 4 stars.
This was not a fast read, and I'm not sure why--because I did find it interesting. The half demon, half human main character was a mystery to herself, and pretty well remained a mystery to the reader, as well. I'm not overly fond of being kept in the dark.
There were a few editing issues. The ending of the first installment tied up that particular adventure, but did leave the reader with a teaser. For the main part, I enjoyed this book, and will probably continue with the series.
A great book. The writing is good and but what I like best is the main character. It takes time to truly know anyone and that is definitely the case for her. Bits and pieces are dropped everywhere allowing you to get a picture of the character. At the end of the book that picture isn't entirely clear but the setup for the book encourages you to be ready to learn more..
Tess Adair has written a different kind of paranormal heroine who has many layers to her magic and changing body morphology. She has been assigned the task of finding out what monster has been killing high school teens and getting rid of it. This story has many layers and is a great who done it that will keep you guessing.
The title and book cover is what first caught my attention, then the blurb. I love how gutsy, tough, smart assy, and strong Logan is. You only get glimpses into her past and it makes me want to read more to fund out where she came from, who was her mother, why is she the way she is and why is she covered in markings.
Shadow Summoner by Tess Adair is an awesome story that I have read. This is book number one and it is full of dark magic with a paranormal detective all of which I loved reading about. I highly recommend this story to everyone that loves reading about dark magic and a paranormal dective to read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was hesitant about this book, so many urban fantasy follow.such tired cliches, but this one has a good mystery and believable characters and didn't turn into a paranormal romance, thankfully. Color me pleasantly surprised. I'll read the next one ASAP
An enjoyable little fantasy book. An easy read with a plot that grips you and keeps you engaged I didn’t love some of the writing style, and I feel like the author wrote this hungry based on the pure amount of unnecessary references to the food they serve at the diner but all in all a good read and I’m excited to see where Logan and Judith end up next!
Well written and suspenseful. The heroine herself is unsure of her origins but knows she is part-demon with the ability to use magic to protect others. It is a glimpse into a fascinating new world.
A well-written fantasy/ horror story featuring strong, mostly likable (and a couple of truly repulsive), characters and an intriguing plot. Highly recommended.
Loved how the author always kept you guessing on what was going to happen next. I liked the pace and the way it ended. Looking forward to reading the next book!
I absolutely got pulled into this book from the 1st page. I hated putting it down. I loved the main character and how the book flowed. Can’t wait to read the next!
