Angst, angst, angst. Chase and Chloe had me tied up in knots from the beginning. They have nothing in common. Chase is 31, the president of the feared Horsemen MC, he's a womanizer, the only thing that matters to him is his family and the club, he's a killer. Chloe is 19, the beautiful, abused daughter of a cop/cult leader, she's a virgin, and she cares for no one, maybe not even herself. He's jaded, she's innocent. Yet when Chase comes across Chloe by her broken down car on the side of the road it's the beginning of a tumultuous relationship.
This is a compelling book that nicely balances the dark world of a motorcycle club where laws and life have no value and a budding romance between two people who don't know how to be together. It's told in multiple POV's. It's full of action, suspense, and some sexy scenes. They face threats, betrayals, and danger. It's high on attraction and frustration. There's a large well developed cast of characters, The Mckenzie brothers are all sexy and deadly. Chase is the leader, Marc the protector, Archie the medic, Declan the intelligence, Dan the mechanic and the youngest Oliver is the techie. The sisters Jess and Sammie add a youthful enthusiasm and lightness to each scene they are in. The brothers add a complicated dynamic. Despite family love and loyalty they create more conflict than their enemies. Chloe's step-father Joe is a worthy villain and Jenkins is a great friend with potential for more. The main focus is on Chase and Chloe and the book's success is due to them. I have a love/hate relationship with both characters and with them being together. Chase is an alpha. He's sexy and charismatic. He also has a terrible temper and a cruel streak. For every gentle moment or kind act, he follows it up with a brutal hurt. Chloe is damaged. She has low self-esteem and no ability to trust. Chase doesn't do relationships, only one-night stands. Chloe runs to protect herself. They have plenty of sexual attraction, but can't communicate or be honest with each other. They should be good together, instead it's all misunderstandings and fights. It does build the tension. However, after Marc gives Chase the wrong idea about an incident, there is a week of behavior on Chase's behalf that is unforgivable. After the first night's actions there should have been no way Chloe would consider a relationship with Chase. EVER. Some things can't be accepted, forgotten or forgiven. He went too far. Instead the first time he gives her attention after this, she submits entirely to him. NO! The timing is wrong. There is no time for redemption, no time for hurts to be healed. It leaves her looking pathetic and with no pride. And it's not like he was Prince Charming from this point on. This damaged him and them in my eyes. It was hard for me to accept. For me this was much worse than any abuse she suffered at the hands of her step-father. Yet they both show character growth by the end. It was awesome to see Chloe stake her claim!
All in all this book had me obsessed for 24 hours. I could not put it down. Then it shockingly ended with a horrible cliffhanger that left me screaming. I need to know: Does Chloe take control of her life? Does Chase learn to control his temper? Do these two learn how to be together? Do they get their HEA or are they not meant to be? I need to see Chase prove to his brothers, the MC, and especially Chloe that she is his everything, his forever. I need more!!
