A young woman with a secret. A man with a death sentence. And a terrible fate that threatens to destroy them both ...
When I was invited to the secretive castle DuMoir, I knew I'd end up dead. The guests might be excited by the exclusive tour around the estate, and the ending ball that concludes it, but I know better.

The castle's inhabitants are vampires. And they want our blood.

I must find a way to survive their feast, because I'm not here as a clueless visitor. I'm here for a reason. Undercover work can be hard, but I've been through worse. That is until I unwillingly become a blood slave to Drake, a mysterious, brooding vampire prince.

Tragedy strikes the castle and chaos arise. Despite the new dangers surrounding us, I soon find out there's more to Drake than he lets on, and feelings I'm not supposed to have stir in my chest.

But I can't afford any distractions or everything will be lost. After all, I'm hiding a secret-a dark secret that might save us all ... or doom us forever.

A thrilling and bloody paranormal romance novel, The Vampire Heir is a stunning new adult fantasy featuring a dark and mysterious vampire prince and a strong heroine. Fans of A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest and The Vampire Diaries will become addicted to this series!

I’m always happy to dive into vampire books, eager for a story that will hook me and take me back to my teenage days when vampires were everywhere. The Vampire Heir seemed like a book that would be perfect for going back to my teenage years, but I had so much trouble with it.

In fact, this is one of those books where I could sit and rant about all the tiny things that annoyed me. I kept reading, hoping things would improve. Instead of improvement, new things were introduced that annoyed me. Rather than listing all these things, I’ve combined them into one simple way of explaining why this book was so hard to get through. There were a lot of moving parts to this book, which could have made it interesting, but nothing was fleshed out and it prevented any element from hooking me.

Although this series seems to work for many, I have no desire to continue the series after this one. Perhaps I’m too picky with my vampire books, but this failed to deliver.

Ok, so if you’re reading this your probably dig some vampire books. With that said, this is not like every other book. Thea and Drake’s story have something different to it. It a crazy mix of hate, love, magic, blood, and backstabbing...like all mixed up into one. This was a great book, and I devoured it in one day. I fell in love with not only the main characters, and one extra character as well. It is nicely written, and it keeps you wanting to know what the heck is going on! I can’t wait for book two!

Not for me

I just couldn't get into this book. Who wouldn't go looking for an 8 year old that has a family? They kill 200 people a year and no one suspected anything? Small things like that just didn't add up and kept me from enjoying the book

⚠️TW: sangre - asesinato - contenido adulto.

***3/25/2021 Update

I have been thinking much about this book since I read it (which is a good sign) and my review. I just wanted to say that while this book wasn't for me when I read it, I don't want people to not pick this book up if they're interested. Just because this wasn't for me, doesn't mean this series won't be for you. I will be recommending this book to others. They might love this and I want people to give this book a try.

___________________________________________________

I really wanted to give this book 2 stars. But I don’t think I can do that.

Character: 0/2 stars
ll the characters fell flat. I liked Thea and I didn’t hate anyone. The motivations for each character was not well defined for me, so I couldn’t tell if anyone was acting in response to their personality, flaw, strength, and weakness or to their goal.

Story: .5/2 stars
The premise is interesting. People being invited to this castle for a tour and oops now vampires are taking a bite out of you: that all sounds awesome! Yet more plotlines were introduced than tied up. I’m sure the author has a plan with all the elements she kept introducing and all the worldbuilding elements she dropped in, but I needed it to be differently structured for me to like it enough to read more books in the series.

Writing: .5/2 stars
The writing itself wasn’t bad. It was fast paced and I needed that speed read I got with this book! I didn’t agree with the first person POV. Maybe at another time I would have really liked not being included on Thea’s mission. But I couldn’t find a logical reason why she wouldn’t keep the readers in the loop. Had, for example, vampires been mindreaders and she needed to not think directly of her goal to keep herself safe, then I would have been more likely to be on edge with her. But this choice wasn’t a good fit for me now.

Experience: 0/2 stars
I was so excited to read this book and I started off strong. But the more I read, the more annoyed I was with the story. I slowly became less interested and that makes me sad! I also listened to part of the audiobook and the male narrator was so cringe worthy, I began to dread Drake’s chapters. Thea, I love, but again it only went so far.

Aftermath: 1/2
This book is giving me a lot to think about in terms of my own book I’m writing and I’m sure I will refer to this book in the future, but rereading it seems unlikely at this point. Maybe I will though. Who knows.

Overall: 2/10 stars or 1/5 stars

The heroine is not likeable, she is “arrogant” and “childish” just as the hero says and TSTL...it’s as if she doesn’t grasp the gravity of situations often.

¡Buenas buenas, lectores!

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

4 ⭐️ This is my review for the series as a whole....

This was a fun, action packed, binge worthy supernatural romance series! I absolutely enjoyed the series as a whole and I can't wait to read all of Juliana Haygert's books!

The storyline and plot was easy to follow, the romance was steamy and the spice was "nice" 😉

I have been reading a lot of high fantasy lately and this series was a breath of fresh air and a nice pallet cleanser for me.

Rite of the Vampire definitely gave off The Vampire Diaries vibes and for someone who LOVED that series, I absolutely ate this up! I really enjoyed all the twist and turns throughout the series and I would definitely recommend this as something you can binge and have a good time reading.

I'll be honest and say that I hadn't heard of this book until the author approached me and asked me if I'd like to review it! I've heard of this author's books and I have a few of them on my Kindle, but I still have to read one of them lol! I obviously said yes to reviewing this book because I read a vampire series last year and enjoyed that one, so I was looking forward to this book! Luckily I had also just finished my current read, so I was able to start reading this book as soon as I received my copy! After reading, I can say that I enjoyed this book! It started with a bang quite early on and then it progressed nicely and it held my attention all the way through! The plot also only took me a few sittings to read and I read the first half of the book in one sitting and the second half of the book in another sitting! The plot also had a few secrets in it and these changed the plot a lot! There were a few seriously hot scenes between the two main characters too! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Thea was the main female character, and in this book she was placed in a very dangerous situation that completely changed her life! I felt for Thea, even though she knew in a way what she was going into! I'm not sure if Thea was quite expecting vampires though lol! I also connected with Thea all the way through this book and I didn't lose that connection at any point! She also had a secret in this book, but I could understand why she felt like she couldn't tell anyone! Drake was the main male character and love interest of Thea! Drake was seriously hot and it was easy to see his feelings for Thea develop! He was very protective of her too, which was completely understandable! I also felt for Drake in this book because he went through a lot and had a lot on his plate! Thea was just one of those things lol! Drake tried his best to handle it all, but things seemed to go from bad to worse and he was in serious danger! I loved that this book was written from both Thea and Drake's point of views! I was hoping that it was going to be after I read the synopsis, so I'm really happy that it was! It helped me connect more with both characters and it allowed for more things to happen in the plot, especially as both characters were dealing with their own problems! I also can't wait to read the next book in this saga! I know that it releases in a few months time, which makes me really happy because it means I won't have to wait long to read it! The ending of this book was also left at the perfect place to lead into the next book! I can't wait to check out this author's other books too and give them a read! The cover for this book also suits it perfectly! It would definitely draw me to the book and make me want to pick it up or read the synopsis to find out more! I love it a lot and the model is the perfect Drake! Big thank you to Juliana for an ARC of The Vampire Heir!

The Vampire Heir by Juliana Haygert a five-star read that you would give your first born for. This is the first book in the Rite of the Vampire Saga series and if the rest of the series is half as good then it will be amazing. I have read this author as part of another multi author series, but this was my first foray into what is solely her world and I am a fan the world has great depth and the characters have real qualities to them, you can imagine yourself in the ballroom and on the train, the anticipation and wonderment. Thea Harrington is a woman with secrets was she lucky when she won the lottery and was picked to go to DuMoir Castle or was it something else, it’s the hottest ticket to win. But once you are there much like Hotel California you may never leave. But as with life things are never as they appear on the surface as Prince Drake DuMoir is a perfect example of that. This series appears to be starting with a bang and I for one can’t wait for more!!
There is something for everyone in this story and it’s a great example of writing and I can only wait with baited breath for the rest of the series.

I wanted to love it so bad, but I couldn’t. The characters are very non-dimensional. The “love” between them, I still didn’t understand it. The plot? Read like a couple aspects had been considered but instead of choosing one to focus on, they were all done - and badly. The vampire lore - I was desperate for some after reading some Christine Feehan books and this fell utterly flat. If you love Twilight maybe you might enjoy this... But it wasn’t for me.

Silly

67% into the book we find out why this insanely stupid girl places herself willingly into a nest of vampires. How fortunate a vampire who likes humans saves her. Then they fall in love all at her tender age of 19????? This could have been an interesting story if it wasn't so unbelievable. In truth she would have been drained dry almost immediately. Disappointing.

DNF

Made it a little over 1/2 way and couldn’t continue.
MC is searching the castle for something, continuing to put herself in danger, but it still hasn’t said what she’s looking for or why. Too annoying for me.
Drake then when became a suspect in the Lord’s death it was too much for me. It’s not plausible.
DONE!

A great supernatural read

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and it's characters. There was some great twists and curve balls thrown which enhanced the story plot even more. The characters were great and I love the alternating POV. I will be looking forward to reading book 2.

Welcome to Castle DuMoir! We do hope that you will enjoy your brief stay because honestly, you won't be here long. You see, your purpose is a singular one. You are here to feed the vampires who call this place home, and then most of you will die this very night. Thea knows these things as she makes her way through the tour of the castle and prepares for the "ball" that will happen afterward when the princes make their appearance. Thea has her own secret and her own reasons for being there, but she is determined to do what she must to succeed. She almost doesn't make it, but when Prince Drake claims her and a young woman she is trying to help, her path is made a little bit easier. Things get complicated though when Lord Reynard is murdered that very night. Now the other Princes are looking to decide who will take over next, and bad blood quickly comes to the surface as suspicions are cast on two. Prepare yourself for the twist you won't see coming.
The Vampire Heir by Juliana Haygert is book one in her Rite of the Vampire series. In this book we are introduced to Drake and Thea as the two main characters. Each has a chapter dedicated to them, so we follow along as the story goes back and forth between the two. Prince Drake is different from the other vampires that have been claimed and turned over the years. He has lost much, but at the same time, with the passing of the years, he has come to accept what he is and let go of old grudges. Thea has a secret that she must keep hidden, and a mission that is important enough to risk her life for.
I honestly admire Drake quite a lot. He expresses a lot of restraint when dealing with Thea. He knows the dangers of the castle, especially with her drawing the attention of Alex, a fellow Prince. He attempts to keep himself aloof from her, but for some reason, he feels compelled to care about what she thinks and feels. Despite the fact that she crosses the line several times, and puts herself in danger, he never truly lashes out to harm or punish her. Thea is a character that takes a bit to grow on me. I understand that she has a mission, but she's also defenseless against vampires who would have no problems draining her. It's like she seems to forget this in her blind decisions to go off and run around. She grows on me when she gets some sense though.
This is an engaging story that's for sure! The mystery element as to who killed Lord Reynard is intense. The author paints the suspicion on one particular character, whom you will quickly come to despise, but be prepared for a twist. The author drops hints here and there, but it's definitely a surprise. This story is well written. There is some chemistry between Drake and Thea, but the romance element seems to stem more from a particular situation and physical attraction than anything.
Overall, I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author stays focused on the main goal of the story and gives us lots of thrills, some steamy scenes, and quite a bit of intrigue. I look forward to the next book in this series!

It was okay. I guess I expected more darkness. It's portrayed as a dark paranormal fantasy. But it is really just a paranormal fantasy.

There are bits that make me love the characters a little more. But the build is not enough to create an interest I want to follow. I didn't feel when I should have felt sadness or frustration on behalf of the main characters. The world build feels rushed...it all just feels rushed.

I listened to the audiobook and found the male narrators version of other male characters so annoying! Either they had weasel like voices or old put on voices, the only deep ruff voice was his own character. The female narrator was much better and did the great voices of all characters.

There is smut, and it sounds hot, but it falls flat in someplacess, kinda like the book itself.

I may read the other books in the future, it could get better...

Move over Twilight

This was such a fun book! It's got a little bit of everything. Romance, mystery, danger, action, a broody alpha male, and a spitfire heroine. I love the world that was built in this first book, and I can't wait to see where the author takes this story. It does end on a cliffhanger of sorts, but it also ends answering the mystery of the beginning of the book. The ending definitely left me yearning for the next book!
