“EVERYONE LOVES IVY” part three! The quest to end Ivy’s domination heads toward a close, but can Batman offer Ivy redemption on the other side of this crime? It’s an epic showdown between the Caped Crusader and one of his most popular foes, brought to you by the creative team behind “THE WAR OF JOKES AND RIDDLES.”
Tom King is a little weird, he is just absolving many villains of past sins, he doesn't think they are villains. But villains exist and they lie, that's just the simple truth. There is no way Catwoman was a benevolent thief her entire career, that's just how Tom King choose to tell her story. And there is no way Poison Ivy just killed those men in the war of jokes and riddles. He is pretty much acting like his run is the only run, but that's not true, he even mentioned zero year at one point, so he is building up on Scott Snyder's run. Did Ivy really kill nobody in that run? Personally I don't remember even though I read all of it a few years back.
So its a continuation of Ivy's story in the "War of Jokes and Riddle". Its ok.. I guess. It still didn't answers the things that bothered me in this mini arc but still a good ending.
"Batman changed in the car. Batman has a machine that puts his pants on. In the car. Batman's crazy." I'm so happy Harley is the one who had to witness him get dressed by a machine, and that the first thing she wanted to tell her wifey was that. She's everything.
I like the teamwork combo Batman and Catwoman deliver. Good psychology warfare. I liked the artwork and the story as well. There is a nod to the War of Jokes and Riddles as well.
This issue was a bit confusing for me because I haven't read War of Jokes and Riddles yet (I know, I'm annoyed by that too), but I did really enjoy the scene where Harley comforted Ivy. One of the best depictions I've seen of their relationship in a long time.
Seeing Harley and Ivy together in this issue, it... it does things to my heart. What a weirdly perfect pairing they are. You could probably have thrown Catwoman and Harley together or Ivy and Catwoman together and gotten similar results. But the dynamic between someone who is so strictly devoted to her cause contrasts beautifully with someone who is joyously chaotic and unpredictable.
They keep each other from losing themselves to the extremes of their personalities. It's more than an opposite's attract thing; I find it oddly heartwarming that they seem to have this unspoken respect for each other despite seeming like people who would hate each other.
Next to Big Barda and Mister Miracle, this is probably my favorite DC Power Couple. I think if you wanted to, you could actually have them both reform completely as a result of their union. And instead of reverting to tradition, just keep them that way forever. It's one of the more powerful narratives to come out of either character. I usually don't give two shits about what happens to a fictional friendship or romantic pairing, but these two kids, they bring a tear to my eye when I see um doing their thing together.
And this issue had one of the more powerful moments I have seen between the two.
I got nothing to add. Except maybe that the issue could have been longer. Ivy is more than one of my favorite Batman villains, as this issue shows, she is one of my favorite anti heroes, one of my favorite characters.
And here we get the introduction to Sanctuary that's going to be the next Crisis. I really loved how Harley was able to get through to Ivy. Those two characters have always walked a fine line in pretty much everything they do. They're interesting. I'm so happy Tom King allowed them to BE interesting in their own right and not as a sideshow to Joker.
King is killing it. Really didn’t expect such great Harley/Ivy stuff when this arc started, but here we are. Also, really love the way King continues to explore the idea of marriage through other characters. Really hope he gets to see this all the way through.
This issue was great... no not really... it was just a bunch of talking, existential bulls**t and stuff! Why did Ivy keep saying when she was young during the War of Jokes and Riddles? That was just a few months prior and she makes it seem like years went by.
A bit slower, but a good conclusion to the Ivy mini-series. Now we seem to head back to the love story between Batman and Catwoman... not sure about that but I will have a look and we'll see!
