Pulse pounding. Impossible to put down. A most original ending.
After surviving a plane crash, June West surrenders to a shallow existence of a life without memories--without purpose. She is stuck in a hospital where she is taken care of and told what to do with the rest of her life. But how come she has no relatives? No family, children or friends? Hell, she isn't even sure her name is June West.
Slowly, her grasp on the world starts slipping. She hears baby cries every night. She eavesdrops the nurses talk about the last girl. Then she receives a note from under the door: you have twenty four hours to save your daughter or they will kill her.

It took me forever to get through “The Last Girl.” Which is normally not the case for me. I was ready to put it down about 1/2 of the way in but momma didn’t raise no quitter.
After reading this, I was lost, I then went and read reviews on this book and that left me even more puzzled. I’m not sure that the 5 star reviewers actually read this book either. Especially when someone claimed that this book made them laugh??? I don’t recall anything particularly funny occurring throughout. The story was dark.
****Spoilers**** The storyline claimed that everything occurred simultaneously, but with the randomness of each occurrence it really didn’t mesh well. The characters were not all that great. You’re led to believe the main character is something special and instead she’s a druggie/prostitute who dreamt up crap during one of her drug induced stupors and can’t rationalize between fiction and reality. The whole thing was unbelievable. If the first 1/3 of the story had kept going with the direction it was headed in it would have been good.... but then after that it is as though there are 3 other people telling you the same story and between the 4 of them they’ve all come up with their own version and it’s nothing but a mess.
Surely I’m not the only one who read this and then thought “wtf did I just read?!?!”
The first half of this book was amazing. It had me trying to guess what was going on the whole time i just couldnt put it down, i had to know if my guesses were right. But then when I got to the second part of the book, we get a curve ball thrown at us once the doctor and his comatose wife get introduced into the story and all my origional predictions get thrown right out the window with some brand ideas of whats going on. It isnt until the 3rd half of the book that everything starts coming together and the whole story is becoming clear that i started to actually dislike the book i started to get confussed with all the different perspectives and once i finished the book i felt like i needed a little more clarification on a few parts. Im not sure if i missed something or if something should have been explained more. But im still thinking of the book more than 2 hours after finishing it which to me in a great feat. The author did a great job and i found the story enjoyable if im still unsure that i missed something i wouldnt mind reading again because i had a great time reading it.
I read this a while ago and can't remember too much detail. A plane crash. One survivor. Amnesia. A baby crying. June West is convinced she needs to save her baby - but from what? Twists abound. Good thriller, a bit of a mind fuck.
I skimmed through half a dozen reviews before I read this book. The premise sounded interesting, which is why I chose the book. What I also found interesting is that none of those reviews in any way described the specifics of the story - that is, most of the action takes place on what is apparently a Nazi military base. That isn't the point of the novel, far from it, but if I had read that I would have known immediately that this is not a book that would interest me. Before you label me a "snowflake" let me state that I served four years in the USAF and my husband is a retired USAF major who is fascinated with WWII history and military airplanes. So my reasons for choosing not to read books that focus on the military and soldiers are simply that 1) I am tired of the subject and 2) unless the author has been in the military, they rarely get the details right.
Okay, I wanted to get that off my chest and also to give others with similar feelings a heads up. Now for the actual review.
The Last Girl 418 pages 1 👎 Description: The plane crash took everyone's life, except June West, the last girl. It took her memory... Waking up in the hospital with no memories after the plane crash that killed every other passenger except herself, June West finds herself suddenly thrust into a life she doesn't recognize. No husband. No children. And no relatives... it all feels unusual. While her doctors assure her that it's normal for sole survivors and that the memories will return, the authorities suspect foul play and that she may be involved in the accident. As she struggles to search for herself, she discovers a dark secret about her forgotten past--a secret that makes her not only question everything she's been told, but who she really is. Will the slow return of her past memories, threaten her future to come? In fact, she suspects the Last Girl was never her, but a forgotten daughter, one that everyone denies she ever had 🤔MY REVIEW🤔 SPOILER ALERT : This review is going be hard to write. First off I never write spoilers but this book had me so upset I had to . The beginning of this book drew me to the point I could not put it down. I thought wow this is going to be an amazing story . Then it really started to drag and not go anywhere. I'm not sure what in the heck happened but once I reached the halfway point it was like a totally different writer took over. It went downhill very fast and made no sense. Nowhere in the description does it say anything about an island full of Nazis who do nothing but burn and rape women , or a coke addict that was pregnant getting ready to give birth having drug hallucinations. Because that is what the whole book ended up being about. As for the side story going on the author really failed to tie it in , in a way that made it made sense. What was even the point of it ? The ending omg what a mess that was. It made no sense what so ever. It was rushed , confusing and a mess. I honestly wish I had not even wasted my time reading this book. It is a unbelievable, far fetched, confusing mess. I have NEVER read anything like this in my life and I hope never to again. I definitely will NOT be reading anything else by this author. How this ever got published is beyond me. Instead of the character having psychotic delusions I think the author did. I also don't understand why it is under psychological thrillers because it definitely is not.
I have written this review to contain absolutely no spoilers and I talk just about the reading experience.
I can say I have been blown away by this book. At moments when you think you may finally figure it out, you're proven wrong again the next chapter. And everything the book fits. All the things that happen add up. To be allowed to read this book beforehand has been an honor and I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading it (and trying to see if I can figure it out before the end of the book)
When reading a thriller, I am usually a bit sceptical. There are not many books which can satisfy me mentally in this genre. I'm also known to be a rather skeptical reader and I will point out everything that doesn't make sense. There was only one thing in this book for me to point out, and it has been adjusted. Rest assured this book doesn't come with an unknown character all of a sudden or with a plot twist which is too far fetched.
So in conclusion, if you're looking for an amazing story, or as the title says "a gripping psychological thriller with a killer twist", this is definitely a must-read book.
I persevered with this, and finished it, but fully admit to skipping all the passages in italics once I realised they were simply repeats of the previous italic passage. I waited for the shocking twist at the end...next morning I'm still waiting.
The premise is based in drugs, and I'm sure it's been written by someone drug addled.
This book is several hours of my life I'll never get back, and if I hadn't been so tired yesterday, I'm sure I would have turned my Kindle off long before I got 20% in.
I cannot, in good faith, recommend this. It's almost fantasy/sci-fi, and as these are two genres of which I have never read (Not Lord of the Rings, not Harry Potter even), this one goes in the same category as far as I'm concerned.
I *hate* giving one star reviews, but this book was not for me. At all. Super convoluted and confusing plot with tons of implausible twists. It literally made zero sense for about 85% of the novel. I also was not invested in the main character at all.
I'm amazed I actually finished it, but I kept looking for some redemption until the end.
The Last Girl is an innovative, daring and creative novel. It's like no other psychological thrriller I have read. It's exciting, surprising, ingenious, cleverly plotted, and well written. Once I started reading, I couldn't out it down. I read it over two days. However, like the main character, it isn't perfect neither is it an easy read. It is confusing, infuriating and distressing at times, but It's good points by far outweigh these aspects. It pushes the boundaries of fact, fiction and fantasy in literature and raises interesting theories about the role of literature in our lives and our need to write, rewrite and share our stories. I will definitely be looking out for more thrillers by Nick Twist because he has a unique and compelling way of telling stories.
**FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW.**
She can't remember what happened or who she is. She can't remember where she is or how she got there. What she can remember is that she has a child that needs saving but not what she looks like or how to find her. The sole survivor of a plane crash, Jane Doe wakes up on an uncharted island with absolutely no memories. As clues slowly start to reveal that she had a daughter with her on the plane, she finds herself in a race against time to save a daughter that she remembers absolutely nothing about, not even a name.
The Last Girl is a nail biting, keeps you guessing suspense thriller, from the depths of mind of best selling author Nick Twist. It grabs your attention from the very first sentence and refuses to let go until the very end and I can promise you, you will be willing to sacrifice even sleep to find out what happens next. Nick has an incredible talent for plot development and there were so many twists and turns that I had no idea what was going to happen next and it definitely wasn't because of a lack of trying. And his characters!!! OMG! They were all amazing, even the ones that I hated! And there are some that you will truly hate and want to hurt! Really, the only thing to do is just go ahead and get this book because you'll deeply regret it if you miss out.
Those 5 star reviews have to be a scam no? This book is the reason I don't bother with friends recommending books that I wouldn't normally read based on the synopsis.
The entire story is nonsensical, repetitive, and written so poorly. The dialogue is ridiculous and juvenile. Was there even an editor?? The author tried too hard to be another guy writing a women's experience but making statements to suggest he "gets it." Except that blatantly making feminist-adjacent statements but still writing your female character awful and one-note and using the word bitch 1,000 times doesn't convince anyone. I realized that for the most part I really hate male authors writing female characters.
If you're still thinking you might check this out for some thrill, confusion, and random unnecessary, illogical Nazi stuff maybe make it in to a drinking game! Every time the protagonist asks herself if she is insane, DRINK! Every time you read "breathe, just breathe" DRINK! Every time she has only one adjective, handsome, to describe a doctor...DRINK! And maybe to top it off you can drink some more every time you read the words bitch, whore, crack whore, slut.
Wow, this book is a very different read than most things I’ve read. Author did a great job with his storytelling and kept you hooked from the first page. At first I thought I was reading a sci-fi novel and wasn’t sure I’d be into it. But then I realized that this is definitely a psychological thriller. Well done and I look forward to reading more of the author’s books.
This was the freakiest story that I've read in years. The MC had my mind spinning in big circles and the Nazi characters were hellaciously scary.
The story had me confused and it took me a long time to finish. I put it down and picked it up later several times. I got into it as a horror story and it worked but the writing really is bad. The WTF factor is what kept me coming back but it got harder and harder to read.
The MC's backstory should have been told more coherently and there are so many loose ends and dead ends. The comatose wife of one character ties into what. The FBI character orders divers into the MC's hallucination? I won't give spoilers but the ending shocked me in two ways. The cast has a reunion of sorts that makes no sense (I still can't make the connection between them all) and the reveal that makes sense of the core of the book's action.
I've thought about it for a couple of days and settled on a two star rating because I do need wtf books every now and then. It cleanses the mental palate, as it were.
I originally wrote that "Its a very well done thriller" but it isn't. It did have me holding my breath in parts and my head hurting, trying to sort the real from the unreal. I'm not sure that this is worth reading.
I LOVE this book. I was lucky enough to get an early copy from the author, and I have never been more satisfied. Your sucked in from the start, and can't put it down. (If you have kids like me don't start this till bed time!) Your on a wild ride with someone who can't remember. She is so well written and captivating you can't help but feel every emotion with her. And while you'll try, the second you think you have a grasp on what's happening the rugs pulled out from under you. The author does not shy away from the more disturbing or harsher aspects, it is raw, honest and compelling. There are so many on point tiny details, the research into this book, some historic, and understanding the author has is austounding. You won't regret this one on any level. And you'll never see the ending coming. 💗💖 a must read!
I wish I could remember the names of the girls from my childhood, but I seem to have blocked this part of my memory into a grave in my skull. I stop the car. We’ve arrived. In the cemetery we pay our respects to aunt Ashlyn Ward. I’ve buried her ashes inside an urn that I had placed in a coffin. Ashlyn deserves to be remembered, not just as my pen name author, but as a human being. It’s also nice to see June pray on her knees with laced hands. She seems so serious about it. I wait as she tells Aunt Ashlyn about her flying plans and tattoos. June claims she can hear Ashlyn talk back to her. I never comment or ask about the things Ashlyn tells her. I’d like to think it’s true, not that my daughter has an imaginary friend who is her aunt. Besides, if I know what Ashlyn tells June, I think I will break down in tears.
I was give this book as an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
This book is one of those rare finds that keeps you hooked from the first page. Every time you think you've got it figured out the plot thickens so to speak. Having read other books by this author under a different name I wasn't expecting a book like this.
The story revolves around a woman who wakes up and can't remember anything, who she is where she is.... Add in some action and you've got a different sort of amnesia book. would highly recommend to any one who like mystery stories with a twist. I read this within 2 days and I've read it again twice since
Received an early copy from author. This book is definitely a page turner. I was hooked from the very begining. It keeps you wanting to read more and is definitely a book that automatically grabs you and sucks you in. My interest was peaked after reading the first sentence. I was disappointed when I had to put it down to adult. Author Nick Twist never failed to make me gasp at what was happening next. The twists in this book were unbelievable. I was mad, sad, and confused all at once. The confusion was well worth it in the end. The Last Girl has so many twists and turns. Can't wait to see what he has in-store for us next. Having read books under Twists other name, it is definitely a different direction from his other novels but a good direction at that. Twist has a true talent for writing and never ceases to surprise me and keep me wanting more. Definitely a GOOD READ. 😉 Keep em coming Twist.
I received a early cook to review! May contain some spoilers
This book grips you right away and does not let go till you are done. I started yesterday afternoon and didn't stop till I finished it right before I was due to go into surgery. I love that you really have no idea who she is or what's even real till the end. I still walked away and though about it for the rest of the day. Every time I thought I was figuring out how it was going to end, bam not gonna happen. You dont get bored reading it that is for sure! And I really li,ed how it all wrapped up with everyone being so close. Really kept me on the edge of my seat. Can`t wait to read more from this author!
I was lucky enough to receive a preview copy to review from the author. I couldn't put it down! There are so many twists and turns, you just are compelled to finish it in one sitting. I thought I had it figure out than another turn of events happened and I had to keep reading, kept me up until the early morning. I was there right alongside of June, fighting with her, edging her on every step she took. One of the best books I have ever read, Nick Twist( Cameron Jace) keeps you on the edge of your seat with every page read. I give it 4 stars and would give it a 10. A Must read book!!!
The Last Girl - This thriller story draws you in from the very first page and continually challenges your mind which makes it very hard to put down. With the twists and turns your mind begins to wonder which character's world we are living in and Camereon keeps you guessing til the very end. You think you know where the story is going only to have the carpet pulled from under your feet and further into the rabbit hole you fall. An awesome read that keeps you on the edge of your seat chapter after chapter. This book would also make an awesome movie thriller.
I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this book and I loved it! I couldn’t put it down. It had plot twists and suspense! It had everything that I love in a thriller! I was very impressed by this book and I would highly recommend it! I hope to see more by Nick Twist in this genre!
This was a book that I could not put down....I just wanted to know what the H was going on. It did have twists and turns. The ending left me a little confused. I think I understand, but I'm not 100% sure. I would have liked a more spelled out ending that wouldn't have left me wondering. But it was definitely a book that you just want to keep reading. If it was a more spelled out ending it would have been 5 stars for sure. I will have to try the authors other books.
This is absolutely one of the most intriguing books I've read. I was a little confused as to what was happening in this story, then as I kept reading I got it! It keeps your interest and you never expect what happens next. The ending was very unexpected! Love this book!
