Damned If I Do
The Harker Trilogy Book 1
By: Erin Hayes
Narrated by: Kristin James
This was a pretty good vamp book. Not like others. The vamp hunter is a Harker, a magical being that can turn one of her hands into a sword. There are only a handful of Harkers left. It goes to the oldest female. They killed her sister, her older sister! Now she is the Harker. The only other female is her niece, her sister's little daughter. They are after her now and she has to protect herself and her family. The only one not trying to kill her is a vampire that has amnesia from before...Jude. He has been her friend and is helping her now that her sister is gone. But the immortal vamps know him...how? Great read!!!
The narrator is wonderful! Great performance!

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review

With the dark creepy cover, this wouldn't be a book I would normally pick up, but as I read another book by this author and the blurb sounded interested I decided to give it a try. This book definitely surprised me in the best possible way. I enjoyed it from the beginning till the end. Damned if I Do is fast paced, filled with action, interesting story line, creepy vampires and kickass vampire hunters. There are interesting characters and side characters who all have their own agenda. This book captured my attention and I was so sad when I read the last page as I can't wait to read what happens next.

This book has a dark and gritty feel that really fits the story. Bad things happen, people die and get hurt, but those who are left standing are still fighting for a better tomorrow. The prologue gives a view of what happened 5 months before the start of the story when Edie her sister dies, it's pretty horrifying, but it really hit home the danger of the vampires and how gruel they could be. Edie is infected and being a Harker vampire hunter that means a slow and painful death, the only thing she wants is to make sure her little niece won't be afraid for the vampire who murdered Edie her sister. So she's hunting the vampire who did that and sort of looking for a cure, although that isn't Edie her focus. And later on in the story it all makes sense why Edie her sister was killed and Edie infected and I liked how all things made sense and everyone had their own agenda and motives. It made the villain more interesting and maybe even more creepy and scary too as he knew what he wanted and planned for it.

The ending of this book was really well done, I knew something was up, but I wasn't sure what. And then when things start rolling and the truth comes to light I was really surprised. There sure are some surprising revelations, especially the one in the last chapter took me by surprise. There also was one twist a bit earlier that I had expected as I've seen that in a few other books, but I still think it was well done. There was a bit of an horrifying scene towards the end, actually two of them and I felt a bit shocked and sorry for Edie, but it did make sense even though I thought it was pretty gruesome.

Edie is an interesting main character, she really has her heart on the right place and she fights for others first without thinking about herself at times. She really goes through a hard time and I was happy there were some people there ot help her as she really needed people who looked out for her. Carl is her cousin and he's a great guy, he wants to help, even though Edie is reluctant to let him do that as she doesn't want to bring him in danger. Edie her aunt is reading through books searching for a cure. Then there is Jude who is a vampire with memory loss, there are some hints to his pasts, but he doesn't remember anything. We also get some chapters from his point of view, which I liked. He truly cares about Edie and I thought they made a nice couple. Then there are a few other interesting characters they meet along the way and at times it's hard to know who they can trust and who not. There are a few scenes involved Edie her niece Amelia and her brother in law and it just broke my heart how they had to live without Edie her sister. The scenes with Amelia were a bit lighter than the rest of the book, but also illustrated how much their family had been through and lost and it was just so sad.

There is a bit of romance, even though it isn't the focus, I still liked how it was present. It was interwoven into the story, with now and then a scene that focussed on it a bit more. I liked the romance and how they are an unlikely combination, but it works. Edie and Jude are great together. There romance did develop a bit quickly, but given the circumstances I think that was logical. And they already have known each other for 5 months. I also liked how there wasn't too much drama and they got together in the first book already. I am looking forward how their relationship will progress.

The world building was done quite well, we get a good idea of what goes bump in the night and who fights against them. There are vampires and vampire hunter and we learn about them both. From Jude his point of view we see a bit more from the vampire side of things, how they live and how they get their blood. I liked that not all vampires are evil, but it depends on the person. there's also some lore later on about how they came into existence which was quite original ad interesting twist. They can't stand sunlight and need blood to survive, so they stay true to most of the normal ideas about a vampire. Then there are the vampire hunters who hunt vampires, but usually only those who are a danger to society and hunt humans. The Harker family is a special vampire hunter as the strongest/ oldest of their family has special powers and can summon a sword from their hand. There is also a few more paranormal elements, involving ghosts and how Edie can use some powers like setting fire to things or moving things with her mind. It was very well done and I really liked how Erin Hayes built this world. If you are looking for a well written vampire book I would recommend this one!

To summarize: Damned if I Do is a great start of this series, fast paced and filled with action. Once I started reading I didn't want to stop and the story kept my attention from start to finish. There were a few interesting twists and surprises. The world is dark and gritty, but there is some hope too. I liked Edie and there are some interesting side characters as well, although it was hard to know who was trustworthy and who not. The romance developed a bit too quickly, but it was well done and I thought they made a nice couple. The world building with the vampires and vampire hunters was very well done and I liked how not all vampires were evil, but it depended on the individual vampire. There's an original twist about the original of the vampires as well. I can't wait to see how this series continues!

Wow! I am positively baffled by how much I loved this book. I am shaking with excitement, and having to tell my best friend about this book even though it happens to be 4:40 am. Yep that's right this book was an up all night long type of book.

This book had a whole new spin on the vampire world. One that involves not only vampires, and vampire hunters, but the vampire hunters also have magic putting a real spin on things, oh but that is not all. This book has a hidden mystery in it too. A ghost even wants to help solve the mystery. While searching out that mystery with the help of another awesome vampire; romance blossoms, however other things always seem to get in the way, like the fact that vampires want something, but Edie has to figure out why, and what it may be. What she doesn't expect is for it to be something she never suspected. She even manages to find something that was just a scary fairytale to her; it wasn't supposed to actually exist.

This book was something both new and exciting. Not only that, it held my attention all the way through. I became a part of the book and I am really glad I did. When you get to step into a new world with different things it can be the most exciting thing, or the scariest, I found this a little bit of both, because I felt everything happening; I lived it, and became a part of it. I have to say that this book is by far a favorite of mine, just because this book took imagination exactly to length it needed to be taken to; with new ideas instead of the same old thing that you sometimes encounter in books.

I received this ARC book for free from the author which had no influence on this review. I was under no obligation to provide a review.

This book has alternating 1st Person POV (Jude | Eddie) & overly simplistic writing. I don’t recommend it.
————————————————-
I’m going to repeat a lot of what was said in previous Amazon & GR reviews but I can’t imagine writing a review & not mentioning it.

I didn’t enjoy the story enough to get past her "I did this & then I did this & then I quickly did this" writing style. We spend too much time hearing every self doubt Eddie has. One review counted 5 “I’m useless in a vampire battle” type comments in 2 chapters. That gets old quickly. As for the coupling well that was another let down. The 5 month relationship avoided the insta love cliche but has as much history & growth as Mayflies.
As for the narrator MEH
This book was one big #FAIL

They murdered her sister and poisoned her blood with their venom, now Edy Harker, vampire hunter, will do anything to avenge that murder before her own clock runs down. The power and legacy of the Harker family has been passed down through time, now their powerful vampire haunting dynasty may be coming to an end, thanks to the vampire blood running through Edy’s veins, but with a network of unlikely allies, including an amnesiac vampire, Jude, she may be close to achieving her goal.

What Edy discovers is darker and more terrifying than she could have imagined and the father of all vampires becomes the most unlikely ally of all.

DAMNED IF I DO by Erin Hayes is a dark, fast read filled with high tension and the searing emotional POV of both Edy and Jude, the vampire who would do anything to keep Edy safe.
Prepare to doubt the intentions of Edy’s allies, expect the unexpected and meet one tough young woman who will stop at nothing to avenge her sister and save humanity, even trusting the most powerful vampire ever. A fascinating read, with just the right amount of intrigue and twists to keep that ending a complete shock!

I literally just finised this book 5 minutes ago and I am bouncing in my seat with my heart racing and my mind going crazy. This book was amazing throughout but the ending has left me nearly speechless. I never in a million years would have seen that coming. I am still flipping out. Now I have to wait until January to see what author Erin Hayes has planned next. I may lose my mind!

Damned If I Do is so different and original. The idea of a vampire hunter becoming infected with a deadly virus from the very creatures she must hunt, while becoming close and relying on one of these creatures to help her seek revenge on the evil vamp who changed her life forever. This story kept me glued to the pages and I continuously wondered what new twist would be thrown in. I loved every thrilling second of it.

One last key factor in my new obsession was Jude. A hot vampire with no memory of his past that wanted nothing more than to aid a gritty, no nonsense hunter named Edie. There was something attractive about the way he looked out for her and always had a come back line that made me snicker. I definitely haven't had my fill of him. Hurry up January!

What an exciting new trilogy! I love Edie and Jude are both great characters. I love the way the author gave us a little twist on vampires in this book. Edie being a "Harker" kills vampires, she is a vamp hunter. But Can you fall in love with one too? I even love the niece Amelia! I imagine she is soo cute and adorable, strong like her mom and aunt but so sweet. So far I love everything about this series! I can't wait to read more maybe I will try the next book as a audio book!

This was a cool story, and the best part was that it really hit the ground running! From the first page, it grabbed me and kept me wanting to read until the last page. I'm so excited that I get to read the next book now, since it has already been made available to me.

Edie Harker is one of the last Harkers, the leaders of the vampire hunters. Armed with a magical sword tucked away in the skin of her hand, she battles the vampires. However, when her sister is killed and Edie is infected by a rogue vampire, she slowly begins to die. Mixing Harker blood and vampire blood only leads to death, not to the creation of a new vampire. Aided by an amnesiac vampire named Jude, Edie's new purpose is protecting her sister's daughter and finding the rogue vampire in order to do the one thing that will protect her niece - kill him.

I loved the suspense and the "crime solving" involved in this book! It was thrilling to watch events unfold, particularly the interaction between Edie and Jude. The story is told from both perspectives, with alternating chapters from Edie's POV and Jude's POV. This is not always enjoyable for me, but in this case, I really liked it. It gave a lot of background we, as readers, wouldn't have, and it helped me bond with both characters.

Now I am off to read the next book! Very exciting, as this book has a cliffhanger. I have to know what happens next!

Everything changes when her sister died, and now she doesn't have much time left to live, but she will do whatever she can to hunt down the vampire that killed her sister. However, when she finds Jude, who seems to be a nice vampire, things start to change.

Now, she doesn't know what is going on or who she should trust.

This book was okay. It had potential to be great, but I felt like a lot of the angst didn't make sense, and it bugged me.

I liked the heroine for the most part, but I wish she had been a little be "more." Other than that it was okay.

**** 4 Cranky Stars ****

Edie Harker is a magical vampire hunter who gets infected with a deadly disease.

Her only source into this fang infested world is Jude. An amnesiac vampire. He can't seem to remember what happened prior to a traumatic head injury while a vampire.

They seek out Anthony who attacked her and her sister together. Anthony the vampire has a very Lord Voldemort like following. People are scared to even utter his name for fear they'll face his wrath. While seeking a supposed mythical being and Anthony they acquire a rag tag group to help out. Edie or the Harker as they call her has a family to protect but a mole in her midst. She's never sure who to trust.

This book is action packed but it's also a love story. A forbidden love story between a vampire and a hunter. Only a few things bothered me like repeating he was amnesiac. This series has definite potential and I can't wait to see what's in store for Edie and Jude.

Same Review Posted Here: Dreamy Addictions

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a vampire fiction novel and when this book caught my eye I want to give this a try because it sounded pretty much kickass. Well, It was good to read but wasn’t exciting enough for me to love it. I’ve read my fair share of vampire slayer novels and there’s nothing new in it but it was really entertaining to read.

Edie comes from a famous vampire slayers family named “The Harkers”. On her way to her home, Edie and her sister were attacked by a group of vampires. A Vampire kills her sister and then attacks Edie, leaving her infected with the virus that will eventually kill her after some time. To protect her niece and to avenge her sister’s murder, Edie sets out to find the vampire who killed her sister with the help of hot amnesiac vampire named Jude. During her search for her sister’s killer, Edie finds out that there might be a cure for the infection spreading inside her and she needs to find it before her time runs out.

Edie is pretty much likable character but she wasn’t as kickass as I expected her to be. She is quite loyal and protective of her family especially her niece which is what I liked most about her. She was kinda brooding character who wallows in her pain and emotionally closed off. She is attracted to Jude but because of her inevitable death and her thirst for revenge, she always acts cold towards him. Jude is quite cocky and arrogant vampire who has an interest in Edie. I really liked his fun personality and I’m glad he isn’t dark and moody like other vampires. There’s nothing interesting about their romantic relationship and it isn’t the major element of the plot. I really liked the character named Carl who is actually Edie’s cousin. He is a comical relief who brought some humor to the plot.

The plot is underwhelming and the pacing is quite slow at many parts that made me skip few pages. The writing was perfectly ok and easy to understand. The book was written in alternative POV which is something I always like in a book. As for the characters, apart from Edie I couldn’t connect to any of the characters which is probably the reason why I didn’t enjoy it much.

All in all it was good but it just didn’t worked out for me. The book ended with a cliffhanger and I don’t think I would continue with this series. It is a good mix of action, drama and light romance and if you like reading vampire slayer novels then definitely give this a try but don’t expect too much.

4.5 Blood thirsty stars

ARC generously provided by publisher via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

Harker has a strange family tree, one of vampire hunters. However she is just one in the family her sister is the main hunter, the one with all the special powers. That is until the night that Harker and her sister are jumped in a shopping parking lot and her sister is killed and she is infected. Now there are only two members of the hunters left alive Harker and her little niece. Harker will protect her niece at all costs and she will hunt down her sisters killer if it is the last thing she does. The only thing that can stop Harker is time, it is not on her side.

However the one thing that Harker never counted on was Jude, an amnesiac vampire that has become her biggest helper. Harker knows she shouldn't trust Jude but she does and she is attracted to him in a way she never believed to be possible. Soon everything Harker believed to be true is thrown upside and she has a chance to end it all, but there is a vampire in her way, the one who killed her sister. Now only that Harker is betrayed in a way she never thought possible.

I loved Harker, she is a kick ass heroine that protects those she loves fiercely and knows her purpose in life whether she is happy about it or not. I also love Jude. He is such a good guy, he may not have started out that way but all he knows he loves Harker and will do whatever it takes to save her.

I cannot wait to read more in this series.

Damned if I Do started off action packed and tragic. I couldn’t believe the beginning and was actually worried for the characters for the duration of the book. The characters in this book live in a fast paced and dangerous world. This book definitely grabbed and kept my attention until the very end, and what an ending it was! I was definitely not ready for it to be over!

In my opinion, what Hayes has done here is revamped (hehe, get it?) a traditional vampire and slayer story, sucked all of the delicious hemoglobin out of the main arteries, and created a whole other creature that looks familiar to us, but it’s just different enough for us to accept it and not reject it as an imposter. The underlying traditional values, strengths, and weaknesses are there, but they have been modified to give this book its very own life, unlike anything else I’ve ever read. That is a good thing. A Vampire book that can stand out from the million other Vampire stories, that all seem to say the same thing, is a rare find and worth every minute spent reading it.

“The Harker” is a vampire slayer. In Damned if I Do, this is an inherited position, passed down through the women in the family. Erin Hayes did a great job of developing a modern and unique version of slayers, while incorporating the basic traditional values and heritage into her characters. Edie never expected to become The Harker. Vampires killed her sister and then infected her with a nasty kind of bug that is probably going to kill her. I like Edie’s character. She seems like someone who has a good head on her shoulders, and knows firsthand how important family values are. She seems a little impulsive, but I suppose she probably needs to be in her line of work. Now she hunts the vampire who killed her sister and is trying to find out why that vampire felt the need to poison her with his blood.

I enjoyed having this story written from different character’s POV. I’ve read some books with multiple POV’s and have not enjoyed them because they got confusing. If you would forget who’s name was at the beginning of the chapter and by the time you get midway through you have no idea who is telling the story. This DID NOT happen in this book. Having the multiple POV’s was great in this case. I would have liked to learn more about The Progenerator’s backstory. He was a really interesting guy and gave a whole new idea for the Vampire’s creation story. I love the idea of what Hayes did here. I loved Jude’s character. I can’t wait to find out what happens when he gets his memory of his former life back, but at the same time, I’m a little nervous because I’m afraid I won’t like him if he was a jerk.

One emotion that I felt repeatedly throughout this book was sadness. I felt so bad for each of the characters at different times and for different things! I also felt excited because there is a lot of action and adventure. Edie can kick some serious butt!

I really loved this book. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. This book is filled with action, adventure, mild romance, twists and turns, mystery, and betrayal. Great story overall. I do feel like I need to warn you that there is one hell of a cliffhanger!

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes vampire books about vampires that don’t sparkle and have a unique creation story. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

I won this book via a giveaway on Reading For Fun.
I have always had a love for vampire hunters and the creatures they hunt. This book deepened my love for the lonely self sacrificing hunter.
The story is dark and gritty. It is not a happy sparkly love story. We get thrown right into the action with the horrible murder of her sister. Edie thrust into the role of Harker only has her love for her family that keeps her going. The book is fast paced and was full of action and suspense.
Edie was one bad ass determined chic. I am in awe of the way the author portrayed her. She never slowed down. Never gave up. Through the pain and heartache she kept going.
I love Jude. I think he was my favorite character. dark and surrounded by his own unkown life. He has so much more to tell. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Terrible

I was done by the 4th chapter. It's done in first person in both Edie and Jude. every sentence was "I did this and then I did this and then I quickly did this". It drove me bonkers!
The story follows Edie, a vampire slayer known as the harker, and Jude, a vampire with no memory. The beginning has her sister getting slaughtered by vamps and Edie is poisoned by a bad vampire who, as it turns out, wants to become the progenitor. To become this he has to drink her poisoned blood and kill the original one. The progenitor is basically a Pandora box. A big thing that bugged me is that once they started coming across vamps who recognized Jude no one once bothered to ask about his origins! The script between characters felt forced and awkward. Mostly though was the I did this, I then did this, now I'm doing this. I don't recommend.

“Darkness isn’t the absence of light; evil isn’t the absence of good. It doesn’t need the other to exist. It simply is. Having one who contains it is the only way of restraining it.”

Hailing from a long line of vampire hunters, Edie Mina Harker has spent the last five months hunting for the vampire who murdered her sister Meghan and infected Edie with a virus that is slowly killing her. Aided by a vampire named Jude, who has connections to the vampire underworld and who also happens to be in love with Edie, the latter hopes to avenge her sister’s death and find a cure before her time runs out.

Jude has no idea of who he is or where he hails from due to an incident which occurred fifty years ago which left him with a scar on his head and amnesia.

As Edie’s symptoms rapidly progress, she realises she’s running out of times despite her powers growing stronger.

Meghan’s ghost appears, urging Edie to seek out The Progenitor, the original vampire. Edie is filled with a sense of foreboding when Meghan cryptically warns her not to trust ‘them.’ With the help of Jude, her cousin Carl and a fellow hunter by the name of Zhi along with his vampire aide Maria, Edie manages to track down the father of all vampires. His revelations shock Edie to her very core and make her question everything she has come to believe about the Harkers. Faced with a stark choice, will Edie finally be able to avenge her sister’s death and stop the virus that’s killing her? And just who is the traitor in their midst that Meghan warned Edie about?

Damned if I Do is a entertaining intriguing read and was my first introduction to the author. Her writing style is engaging, action packed and well paced without unnecessary details. She has done an excellent job in creating a unique modern version of the vampire/slayer myth.

I liked that the book was written from the perspective of the two protagonists as it gave us deeper insight into their thoughts and personalities. I would like to have learned more about The Progenitor’s back story as I found him to be an interesting character. I hope we will learn more about him in the next installment.

Edie’s guilt over her sisters death, her reluctant journey as the Harker as well as her fierce protectiveness towards her young niece make her an appealing, relatable heroine whom the reader can’t help rooting for. She never asked for this role, nor did she want it but she strives at the risk to her own life to ensure that her niece never has to take up the Harker mantle.

The identity of the traitor came as a surprise as I expected it to be someone else. Also Jude’s connection to Anthony is troubling and I hope that this doesn’t create problems in the next installment.

The epic battle at the end was brutal with lots of twists and turns. It’s repercussions will no doubt be felt throughout the next installment which I’m hoping to read next. I recommend this book for fans of urban fantasy who like vampires/slayers and sassy kick ass heroines.

*I received an ecopy of this book via Xpresso Book Tours. This has in no way influenced my review.*

I didn't dislike this book, but I just never felt invested in it or connected to the characters.

One problem was the 1st person present POV. I think it backfired. It's my least favorite POV because, from my experiences, it's the hardest one for authors to do well. And in this case, the two characters sounded pretty much the same, and they didn't seem to have that much depth despite the fact that I was inside their heads. It was like the writing only skimmed the surface of their thoughts and feelings and who they were.

I think that's also why I didn't feel the chemistry in the romance. It was like I was simply being told what their feelings were.

I actually thought the most interesting thing about the book was Edie's relationship with her brother-in-law, Graeme. It was realistic yet complicated since he clearly hated all the vampire-hunting stuff (with good reason), he seemed to put a lot of blame on Edie, he was always mad or frustrated with her, but they were family, and he would do things like stay up late worrying about her while she was out hunting because he did care about her, even if he didn't say it much. And Edie cared about him (as well her niece) too.

Honestly I don't really have much else to say. The characters themselves were fine, I didn't dislike them. The plot made sense and had a steady pace. The romance wasn't the most believable to me, but it at least wasn't instalove either. There were no glaring flaws or plot holes or TSTL decisions or anything. But like I said, I just didn't feel invested.

Overall, I really wanted to like this book as it sounded like exactly my kind of read, but I mostly just feel apathetic toward it :-/ The ending was significantly more interesting though and has made me very curious about what will happen next and how the things that happened will affect Edie's life and her relationships with certain other characters, so I'm going to give the series another shot and see if the next book does a better job of pulling me in.

As a lifelong lover of all things Vampire, I'm always on the lookout for a fresh take on this timeless tale. And, in "Damned if I Do", I've found it!

Edie Harker comes from a long line of vampire hunters, but never expects to have to take on the role as The Harker so soon. When her sister, Meghan, is killed by a vamp, Edie is thrust into the job. Add in the fact that Edie has been infected with a virus that will soon kill her and leave her 3 year old niece, Amelia, as The Harker, and you can see what Edie is out for revenge.

Throw in a vampire with amnesia who calls himself Jude because he hears "Hey Jude" on the radio when he first becomes aware of himself, the oldest Vamp ever and a few witches and you have a great book!

The book is full of action, angst, betrayal, pain and sorrow, but there is always a little hope mixed in. The author does an amazing job with character development and moves the story along at a quick pace. If you love Vampire novels, the author also throws in some vampire lore (or not) along the way that keeps things interesting.

All in all, a great book when you are looking for that Vampire fix! I can't wait to continue this series to see what happens next!

Damned if I do, by Erin Hayes

It was all a bit much for me. Leaving your heroine with her left arm half torn off following a massacre of evil vampires was just too much for me. Up until she lost her arm I was nicely following the plot, even though it was getting more and more outlandish. But when the vampire Anthony (who had previously killed her sister) launched his attack she lost me.

I must confess, however, that I am not generally a fan of vampire novels, and I picked this one up only out of curiosity for its title. It was well written and author Hayes descriptions of bloody encounters with vampires were exciting enough. But as the plot unfolded it kept getting more and more distant from even fantasy reality, and so I must give the book only a pass. Will I read the sequel to see if the heroine recovers her lost arm? Not likely. Sorry Erin. You lost me.

This was such an amazing start to a series. I am so in love with this author's work. All of the characters were instantly relatable and Hayes' fictional world was plausible. While reading this, I had an immediate urge to make a rock playlist. The main character, Edie was amazing. She is a freaking rock star and I've found myself wanting to relate to her by the way she projects herself. Unlovable, bitter, angry, crass and has an attitude and mouth that cannot be tamed by anyone including herself. This is the type of book that makes me love reading. It was so easy to read, to get lost in and books like that are what I live for. I cannot wait to dive in head first with Erin Hayes' other two books in this series. If I could give this book more than five stars, I would in a heartbeat.

Damned If I Do (The Harker Trilogy) by Erin Hayes.

This first installment of the trilogy is incredible. I literally could not put it down.

Edie is the new Harker, a vampire hunter. She watched her sister die a horrible death during a battle that she herself did not walk away from unscathed. The powers and title of Harker where passed down to her when her sister took her last breath. Now Edie is dying. But revenge must come first!

This author captivated me with action, suspense, mystery and love. The storyline is solid, has depth and is unique from most vampire books I've read. Most of the vampire cliches are there but she put her own spin on it. The ending will shock you and leave you gasping for more. Lucky for me, book 2 is available. Highly recommended!

I liked the idea behind this. I female in a family being a suped up vampire hunter each generation. And then one being activated because her older sister died...all interesting. But for me there are sometimes scenes in a book that are so ridiculous to me that I just can't get past them. In this case it was the fact that though Jude and the current Harker had been friends and helping each other out. A vampire whom the Harker doesn't know makes a comment about Jude and she immediately believes it. At the drop of a hat she completely turns on him, no benefit of the doubt and no waiting until they're not in a room full of strangers.

This was just one of those moments I couldn't get past. Super ridiculous and made no sense.

We are put in the middle of action from first page and than for a bit action slows down, to race even faster.
Events are shocking sometimes, but it make reading even more enjoyable. Erin Hayes once again made my laugh and cry in her book!
Characters are full, each one different. Edie is a women that suddely gets Harker's power after her sisters death, and after it her life for sure is not easy to live. She's character that you will root for! I can promise.
Jude - vampire with amnesia. Who is he? What is his part in this whole thing? He's helping Edie to find her way, but is that the thing he do?

I can tell that one thing will blow your mind like mine ;)
I will read for sure book 2.

I had no idea at first this book was re-released. I do like the new covers much better then the older ones and they are more fitting of the story. I'm suprised to find editing mistakes. To be honest, I'm not the type of person to notice these things. So if I'm seeing them, they are the blatantly obvious ones.

About the story, I really enjoyed it and I'm suprised. Because I liked it in the very beginning but then I was bored. I decided to finish it but wasn't going to pick up any of the other books. I'm so glad I did because once this story got going it just didn't stop. Ah...So good. And that ending..damn. On to book 2.

I downloaded Damned if I Do as a free book from Amazon. While I enjoy this author's writing, I am continually disappointed at the quality of the editing-- such a shame for this author not to be shown to her full potential. That aside, as with other books I've read by Hayes, the plot is good and I like the characters. Grammar nerds may have a hard time, but the average reader will probably give this writer a pass on the errors (which were few, but noticeable). There's a real lack of tension and edge-of-the-seat conflict, but the story line kept me entertained. The story ends in a good place, it's still a cliffhanger in which the main thread is NOT resolved and lots of questions remain.

Suspenseful and with lots of action, this book gives a rather different slant on the whole vampire scene and the role of the Harker family. The writing is absorbing and the characters are engaging. It really caught me and kept me reading when I should have been taking care of other things. No sense in giving a synopsis when the publisher's blurb takes care of that. I enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
Kristin James has a real talent for giving the characters definition and life.
This came as Whispersync on the cheap.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Wow! This was awesome! This was my first time reading Erin Hayes and wow was I ever captivated! There is constant drama, action and suspense that fill this book so it's never a good time to put it down. Hayes' characters are not ones that are "in a bad situation but look on the bright side" types. These people live in a dark world and don't hold their breath for a brighter future. With that bring sad I love all the characters and look forward to seeing what happens with everyone but mostly Edie and Jude!
