Everyone is talking about ketogenic diets now, and for good reason—a low-carb, high-fat nutritional approach is a highly effective way to lower blood sugar and insulin levels, reduce inflammation, increase energy, stabilize mood, and so much more. But far too many people are trying to go keto without shifting the focus of their diet to real, whole foods. That’s what Real Food Keto attempts to educate readers about—explaining the reasons why whole foods are a critical element in optimizing your pursuit of nutritional ketosis.
Nutritional Therapy Practitioner Christine Moore has teamed up with her husband, health podcaster and international bestselling ketogenic book author Jimmy Moore ( Keto Clarity , The Ketogenic Cookbook , and The Keto Cure ), to help you apply the principles of nutritional therapy to a healthy low-carb lifestyle. Most people think that going on a ketogenic diet will fix all their health and weight woes, but this book explains that sometimes it takes a little fine-tuning in your diet and supplementation to get the desired results. Real Food Keto provides detailed information about a variety of topics that are rarely discussed in ketogenic circles, including • Digestion • Blood sugar regulation • Detoxification • Endocrine function • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies • Hydration • Stomach acid • The importance of eating real food ...and a whole lot more!
Real Food Keto also shares information about specific foods that provide the proper vitamins and minerals, resources on where to find quality foods, and a connection to Nutritional Therapy Practitioners who can help you with your ketogenic diet. An incredible collection of amazing keto recipes from international bestselling cookbook author Maria Emmerich rounds out this low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic approach to healing yourself from the inside out.
This book is just jammed with information, much of which I found to be of little value. Perhaps with age, I’ve just lost my patience, but there is far too much unnecessary (IMHO) information on the background of the keto diet, and far too much personal info on the authors struggles with health. While the point of this info is often to display improved health once you eliminate sugar and carbs from your diet, I’m quite certain it could all have been delivered more succinctly.
I did start out with great gusto reading every page and all the fine details but at some point, where yet another example of the authors medical journey was provided, I lost interest. So, then I quickly turned pages skimming areas of interest, but again got bogged down in the details. Now, while my background thrives on details, like just about everything....there are varying degrees of details. More importantly is deciding when they are necessary and when they can be summarily presented. This book fell short in making the distinction.
The recipe section was well written and well presented but was by someone other than the authors. Tasty simple recipes with everyday application.
My recommendation would be skip this book and get a recipe book by Maria Emmerich, who provided the recipes in this one. Without her recipes in this book, I would have only rated this book two stars.
As a nutritionist, I often recommend a low carbohydrate diet for my clients. This book would be a good introduction for the layperson who wants to do eat low carb/ketogenic. It gives the reasons for using real whole foods as well as good information on minerals, vitamins, digestion, blood sugar and the endocrine system. The photos and graphs are excellent. The recipes are a little too complex in my opinion and include too much dairy and pork, neither of which I recommend due to food allergies/sensitivities and quality of food.
The book is a great start for anyone looking to start the keto diet. I've been following this diet for over a year now, so the book was more of a reminder on a few things. A few recipes at the end that I would have tried early on but probably would not now since sweet tasting food is no longer as appealing to me as it was early on as the carbs were being reduced.
Love all of Jimmy Moore's books, this one is even more special because his wife wrote it with him. The best diet, is using real food. Love the recipes and the content. The pictures are fantastic.
Some good recipe. May be a good book for someone that eats a regular diet. I am vegan and gluten free so I had to pick the recipes that could be converted
While there are only a handful of recipes in this book, there is wealth of knowledge and links to many medical condition that can be treated wit a Keto lifestyle. I so wish I would have read this book years ago. Anyone questioning whether Keto is for them should definitely read this book. Another one on my to buy list.
