Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

This part of the Dressrosa arc is basically a series of boss fights – ending with the start of a proper Doflamingo v. Luffy, naturally! The other major thing we get here is Trafalgar Law’s backstory and…goddamn. Without excess spoilers: Law has a lot in common with Robin, but what the World Government did to his homeland is arguably even crueler. Ohara was destroyed in a day, but Flevance suffered for years. And then, of course, Law had the misfortune of being taken in by Doflamingo, who then killed the only person who genuinely tried to help him (rather than trying to use his anger and desperation, as Doffy does with all his “family”).

AnniversarySpread
The lovely 17th anniversary spread included here! I’d just like to draw your attention to A) Luffy being the only one NOT dressing up! and B) Sanji with the feather boa, pink shirt, and rainbow array of ties on the dresser. Fabulous. I need him to wear something like that in a canon story!

Given his insecurities, it's always good when Usopp gets a moment to shine. He certainly does here when he realizes that Luffy is in danger and no one is close enough to go help in person:
“Kin’emon: You cannot mean to snipe her from this distance! It is impossible!...
Usopp: I’m a sniper, and backup is where I shine! I shoot down the enemy by surprise to protect my people!!...Guess what, Luffy?! I don’t want to hit the seas without you, man!”

Unlike the “monster trio”, Usopp never got training in , so when he suddenly realizes he can , and combines that with his own quick-thinking inventiveness for an effective non-lethal projectile, it's awesome!

Robin also has more cool moments here than she gets credit for. (I wanted to include an image of her fights but google was instead giving me more of the unnecessary fan service I was complaining about last time. God damn it, internet!). I appreciate Bartolomeo saying “Oh man, it was so presumptuous of me to think I needed to protect her!” when she . Because damn right Robin is a badass! She also pulls out some sweet moves to protect Rebecca - my favorite being an umbrella of sunflowers held in her giant hands to ward off a rain of caltrops – maintaining such a calm air that it takes kind of an unsettling amount of time for anyone to realize that she’s bleeding!

We get the backstory on why Baby-5 has an even more extreme tendency toward limerence* and self-sacrifice than Sanji, and…oof! . As Sai notes, when she almost kills herself because she thought that would be “useful”: “I guess you’ve been living in a place where no one forced you to STOP doing that!” This is some heartbreaking foreshadowing for Sanji’s other backstory; he’s gained more self-worth over the years than Baby-5 (in part thanks to people like Zeff, Luffy, and Zoro, who clearly value who he is and do not want him to sacrifice himself all the time!) but he’s still marked by those experiences.
* “Falling in love” at the drop of a hat; apparently quite a common childhood trauma response that develops from a desperate need for affection.

Which is also why it hurt to see this interaction:
“Zoro: Hey, commandant!...I saw you throwin’ people like cannonballs earlier…
Commodore (hefting Zoro in one hand): Are you certain you want to do this? This technique is not designed for the safety of the person being thrown!
Zoro: Stop wasting time and do it!”

Because, in all prior fights where Zoro needed LIFT to fight a giant, it was Sanji who was there to kick him into the air. But Sanji (along with Nami, Chopper, and Brook) are out of this fight, being swept along toward the arc that is going to force the cook to deal with those old wounds he’s never told his nakama about!

Though it is quite fun to see the backstory on how Zoro learned to a technique to harden his blades. Mihawk knew how to motivate Zoro: Until you’ve master the “black blade”, no booze for you!
(While he and Perona were just sitting there sipping their own red wine)

LuffyDoffy
Luffy blocking Doffy from curb-stomping Law

Doflamingo looking at Luffy’s “Gear 4” transformation and actually LAUGHING (“What kind of joke is this? Take it seriously! I thought you actually had some plan up your sleeve!!”) before getting punched across town is great. Because that’s the thing about Luffy: He will always be silly, AND he will whup your ass if you deserve it. The two are not mutually exclusive!

Outside the main story…There’s a list of alternate real-world professions for the Straw Hats – submitted by a reader but approved by Oda – which is fascinating! Of course, many of them HAVE jobs that make sense in the real world (cook, archaeologist, musician, etc), so the goal is clearly to choose something ELSE that would fit them. Here’s how I see the logic:
- Luffy as a firefighter and Zoro as a police officer make a certain amount of sense (they’re both very willing to take on a lot of risk to help people)…though the jokes in the fandom about Zoro being, say, “The samurai who wanted to be a pirate hunter until he got kicked off the force for brutality” make the idea of “cop Zoro” a tad worrying. I like Zoro, but he’s definitely a better person for having spent so much time with his bleeding heart crew! Luffy as a firefighter would mean well, but I’d worry about his recklessness and distractibility. The dude would probably be largely unemployable in most normal fields, TBH!
- Nami as a nursery school teacher is HILARIOIUS…because DANG would her experience keeping the chaotic crew of Straw Hats in line translate well to dealing with toddlers! Chopper likewise values knowledge, and also has to be firm in trying to get the crew to follow medical orders, so “grade school teacher” for him is fitting too.
- Usopp as graphic designer is a no-brainer. He painted the iconic Straw Hat Jolly Roger, after all!
- Sanji as a stylist can make sense on two levels. First, he is a cook because he enjoys creating things that make people happy. A hair stylist uses their hands and creativity in a similar way to bring pleasure and happiness. But second…that is one step away from “writes musicals” when it comes to queer-coded professions, which is something that happens so much with Sanji I can’t believe it’s an accident!
- Robin as a flight attendant? Well, she does have a very calm manner, especially in a crisis – and her extra limbs would be useful in handing out coffee or life vests to everyone.
- Franky as a pilot? Eh, he pilots his own robot suit and is good with technology, so sure.
- Brook as a detective? That’s the one that isn’t obvious! But if they get to keep their devil fruit powers, the way he can detach his soul from his body could be useful for investigating. And even before that I suppose he did investigate enough on Thriller Bark to figure out what the weakness of the zombies was.

And I might as well talk about…
The Fashions
Doflamingo is a terrible person, but he does have a distinctive sense of style with that feathery pink coat, swoopy pink sunglasses, and animal-print capri pants. So it is perhaps fitting that other characters’ fits seem to get an upgrade here.

Fashion1

In the front of this image, we have Luffy as the gladiator ‘Lucy’. The fake beard is atrocious, but we can see he’s added a sash and substituted a sunflower-print Hawaiian shirt for his usual vest. That’s kind of cool both as foreshadowing of the field of sunflowers part in this story, as well as being a bit more of the subtle sun imagery that has been accumulating around him.
Right behind him are Rebecca (in the outfit I think is probably Princess Leia inspired!) and ZORO IN A SUIT! We’ve never seen that before in canon, but he cleans up good…and imagining the grumbling as someone (probably Sanji!) helped him pick it out and put it on is hilarious. Franky not so much – he’s still not wearing any pants – but I do enjoy his pigtails. Usopp kinda has an Afro-ponytail going on now, which I like. Nami and Chopper are always cute, though I’m not sure why Nami is just perpetually in a bikini top unless it is snowing now. Many readers miss Nico Robin’s cowboy hat, but I think she also looks good in this puffy white one, which seems like it might be inspired by Law’s. And we get to see Law’s tattoos, which is neat; the one on his chest represents his crew, the Heart Pirates, which in turn was named after Corazon (such a sweet detail for someone who tries to present so tough!).

Fashion2
Sanji’s wearing what looks like his regular suit for most of this arc, but I really like this look when they first land…maybe because I’ve been experimenting with vests-over-untucked-shirts myself, LOL!

Then there’s my favorite steampunk duo, the most stylish revolutionaries you’re ever likely to see,

Among the new side characters, the most distinctive are Cavendish (left) and Bartolomeo (right). Cavendish is head of the Beautiful Pirates, the “white knight” who makes everyone (except Luffy) swoon…and just a gigantic drama queen. Bartolomeo initially looks a little scary with the sharp teeth and the tats…before turning out to be a goofball Luffy fanboy.

Even though I'm not done with this arc yet, I can definitely say that it's one of my favorites. I just love everything about it; the world, the characters, the villain... everything just works perfectly.

My favorite part is absolutely the characters. Doffy is an amazing villain, Traffy is amazing, Luffy is great as always, the supporting cast slaps and the crew has so many amazing moments.

These were some of the best volumes of One Piece so far. I am definitely giving them 5 stars and I can't wait to read the ending of Dressrosa.

Beware of SPOILERS from here on!

I need to talk about Law at this point... because we get my boy's backstory and now I understand why he's so emo. I mean... first he lost his entire family and all friends, then he travelled to Dressrosa in a pile of bodies to join Doflamingo and then he lost the only person who loved him there aka Corazon who was shot by Doffy who is his brother. And now I can totally see where Law's hate is coming from. Also my man shows Doflamingo a middle finger... what an icon. Doffy shoots him afterwards, but that is not important.

And let's talk about Doflamingo here because he is a menace. Also I just find it hilarious how his entire motivation for being evil is that he is a spoiled brat whose privilege has been taken away. And it's just an absurd fact of life that Doflamingo has traumas because he seems kinda heartless. There are so many good moments with him along with his shock at Law being a D and him cutting Law's arm off.

And now we have to talk about Corazon because he is one of the best characters in the entire One Piece. I was so happy when he started protecting Law and shocked when he started talking but man I love Cora so much. And then my man reveals that he is one of the marines but he doesn't admit it to Law because the child to hate him... I'm telling you, Corazon would be a great father. It's just something about the way he worries about Law and feels for his pain as he's trying to help him... and the desperation on his face when he sees that Law is in a very bad state... so good. And a cherry on top is him smiling and telling Law that he loves him. So heartwarming.

Now we also have Luffy, who uses gear 4 for the first time ever against Doffy and it's so good. And the way he hates fighting Bellamy and even calls him his friend... it's such a Luffy thing to do.

Another Luffy thing to do is when Zoro calls Pica's laugh stupid. And Zoro does have so many amazing moments here. He is so cocky and apparently he is not entirely stupid because he makes an excellent plan how to defeat Pica. And the flashback where Mihawk motivated Zoro with booze is just hilarious.

We also have Senor Pink, who has a very cool fight with Franky. We get his backstory and it's just so sad that he lost his kid and then his wife got unresponsive and he started to dress up as their baby to make her smile and that's wholesome and I respect that man.

We also get another amazing moment with God Usopp who triggers a trauma in Sugar by sniping through a tiny hole in the palace window. We get amazing moments with Bartholomeu and Cabbage who are hilarious, and at the end I just want to say that Robin becoming as bad with names as Luffy is just amazing.

Wow. Just… absolute wow. 😭 There is so much to unpack in these volumes that I’m still processing it all.

[SPOILERS]

Corazon & Law: That backstory is a masterclass in pain. Law was already a favorite, but the richness of his history is next level. From the genocide of Flevance to the tragic loss of his family, and then finding a flicker of hope in Corazon... only to lose him the moment he realized he would survive? I’m a wreck. Corazon’s sacrifice is easily one of the most beautiful moments in the series.

Doffy is such a brilliant antagonist because he is inherently, unapologetically evil. The contrast between him and Corazon is fascinating. It’s the ultimate "Nature vs. Nurture" case study. They came from the same roots, but bore completely different fruits. It proves that while nature sets the stage, it’s the choices we make and the love we receive (or lack thereof) that truly define us.

Their bond is becoming one of my favorite things in the world. Law’s absolute trust in Luffy, and Luffy’s fierce, protective care for Law is just beautiful. They are the duo I didn’t know I needed.

Dressrosa is really hitting different right now.

Series: One Piece #76-78
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

This volume continues the battle against Doflamingo and the Don Quixote family. We have Franky vs Mr. Pink, Zolo vs Pica, Kyros vs Diamonte, Usopp defeats Sugar again, Bellamy vs Luffy, and Law and Luffy vs Doflamingo and Trebol. There were so many battles happening in these three volumes and a lot of injuries and death. I am really enjoying seeing how strong the Straw Hats have become in their two years apart. This is also the point where Luffy finally introduces Gear Four and shows how he has learned to utilize his Haki and rubber abilities.

We also learn about Law’s backstory and why he is determined to bring down Doflamingo. We learn about Corozan, who is Doflamingo’s little brother, and how far he went to save Law and stop Doflamingo’s rampages. Law has a very sad backstory but it has led him to fight for change and I loved seeing him fight for what he believes in. I can’t wait to see how Luffy defeats Doflamingo.

While I enjoy them a lot, the battles in One Piece are my least favourite part of the manga.

There are some good scenes and some blood-pumping moments but overall the end-of-arc battles are very formulaic: they follow the same pattern every time and that's a bit boring.

However, still an enjoyable time. The highlights for me:
- Bartolomeo who is terribly fun
- Usopp unlocking his haki
- 4th gear

And the crown goes to the back story of hard boiled baby guy. Impressed how in one chapter Oda built such a great backstory for him and made him an instant favourite.

Lastly, I'm way more interested in Doflamingo's backstory than in law. I think Oda could have spent more time on the former and less on the latter.

I've taken a few breaks while reading the Dressrosa arc so I can't quite remember what happens specifically in these volumes. Lots of fighting, we're basically delving into the main fights in this one and we get a lot of the meat of the Doflamingo fight(s). This omnibus includes some flashbacks for him as well as Law and introduces us to ~Corazon~ who I love. There are a lot of solid One Piece moments () but I'm very ready for Dressrosa to be over.

Did this saga drag a bit and spread itself too thin? Yes.

But still, here we are. When everything converged and we hit the climax, everything somehow paid off. While there were many separate plot threads here, they all had a central point, and I feel this focus worked really well to bring this volume together. It had sad stories, great fights, great humor... incredible recovery.

In my opinion, the only reason why this isn't a 5 star review is because the path here was rough, and not every plot thread really works even now.

Despite how many colourful characters are involved, Oda sacrifices a huge percentage of his trademark One Piece humour for 3 volumes of some of his most consistently dark and dramatic material yet. His artwork is also better than ever.

Considering just how many spinning plates there are in play, I think he did an exceptional job of tying up many of them in time for the great showdown everyone was waiting for.

definitely agree with my assessment of four years ago — this arc’s pacing and sequencing are bad. but my LORD luffy vs. doflamingo rocks.

09/04/21:

Notes: “He can use his springiness to fly!!” is a true all-timer random background character narration line. This arc’s pacing is kind of a disaster (it took 25 chapters for Franky to beat diaper man…), but Law’s flashback and the conclusions to both Zoro and Luffy’s fights are fun and satisfying. Though I think the final resolution gets dragged out a bit more. Perhaps one day soon we’ll find out what “treasure” the World Nobles have that the Ope Ope Fruit could be used in tandem with to take over the world.

Okay, this arc is kind of overstaying its welcome, by a bit. However, it was nice to get a really good backstory for both Law and Doflamingo. They are probably the most interesting new characters in One Piece for me, along with Bartolomeo for his comedic spirit. I miss the rest of the gang, they better get a lot of screentime next story arc! Otherwise, it is nice for Robin to get at least a few pages of doing anything since water 7, you go girl!
