魔王城でおやすみ [Maō-jō de Oyasumi] #3

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, Vol. 3

Rate this book
A captured princess just wants a good night’s sleep! Shhh…

Kidnapped by the Demon King and imprisoned in his castle, Princess Syalis is…bored.

Winter has come, and Princess Syalis will do anything to stay warm, including creating a DIY magical device (known as a “Ko-tatsu”), knitting woolen underwear and trying to convince the castle blacksmith to make her a window to keep out the drafts. When she accidentally dies yet again—along with Stamper Cat—curious resurrection complications ensue. Then it’s Christmas and New Year’s! Who will the Demon King designate as naughty or nice? And will all of the other demons let poor Syalis join in any demon games…? And now the Demon King has insomnia!

Still ridiculous, adorable fun. Particularly enjoyed the board game chapter although its sad that board games no longer exist in the human realm. Also loved that Stamper Cat returned and we got to see the princess fused with it.

Another enchanting volume! Less great than the last two, some of it seemed a little convoluted, or maybe just culturally over my head. Didn't love the Christmas story for instance, but some great moments in here also. Princess Cat was wonderful.

This is a nice improvement on volume 2. I felt things went Syalis's way a little too often, and made her a little less sympathetic. This one is better about that. She is still a relentless sleep-seeking fiend, but she also gets a good karmic kick every now and then. Also, her antics are more clearly due to misunderstandings or apathy instead of malice or manipulation.

One occasion of the former is during a Demon Castle Christmas party. Twilight arranges it to be kept a secret from Syalis and to take place late at night. It is a hush-hush event in darkness when the Princess should be asleep, and so they can have their "dark mass" in peace. Syalis finds out, of course, and infiltrates the party.

She does so because first prize in the Bingo Game of Darkness (I'm not kidding about the name) is a sleep aid she wants. By utilizing the social graces she developed as a princess (i.e. various methods of cheating), she rigs the game so that she is guaranteed to win. However, the Bingo Game of Darkness takes place after the Buffet of Darkness and the Oration of Darkness. The later of which takes so long that she falls asleep, is discovered, and thus does not win the Bingo Game of Darkness (that is actually fun to write!).

An example of the latter is when Princess Syalis knits a pair of woolen underwear for herself. The demons notice that she's up to something again, and she deliberately refrains from telling them that is just about knitting. This is because her mother the queen forbid her from talking about her underwear due to an incident in her childhood. So she uses other means of communication as a compromise: charades, Morse code, pictures etc. Due to different frames of reference, the demons think she is declaring her intent to massacre them with alien back-up.

Both of these events are fun to read, and well-constructed.

Furthermore, Syalis shows a willingness to include her nominal captors in her adventures in better sleep. This happens in the very first chapter of the volume, and involves a magical device with the power to subdue demons. It is a wooden device which can trap demons within its confines and inflict them with laziness, rendering them harmless. It is a kotatsu.

Like the previous two volumes, each chapter is a self-contained story, so I could go about all the stories in this volume. I won't because that would take too long.

Trickster Eric Novels gives "Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle volume 3" an A+

Still pretty adorable. Mixing in cosplay, crafting, gaming, and general nerdisms into on delightful package (and, how can you go wrong with a bump of a cosplaying princess changing class between every chapter?).

Will Syalis ever stop her streak of acting like a wrecking ball in Demon Castle? Doubtful. Will she do it adorably and inspire terror in all who gaze upon her? Assuredly.

One of the funniest manga series I've read and this volume is no exception! Highlights include a potato-filled Christmas, Syalis' accidental merger with Stamper Cat and her attempts to cure the Demon King's insomnia, but there are big laughs in every chapter. More people should read Sleepy Princess!

This series will always put me in a good mood. It's cute, sassy, absurd, and has a handful of nerdy references that I appreciated. There were a couple chapters in this volume that weren't as chuckle-worthy as the first two in the series, but it was still a fun time with adorably silly adventures.

This is hilarious! Syalis building a kotatsu, Christmas, all the potatoes, and the bingo! Probably the funniest volume so far. The poor volcano snake being forced to shed his skin. The underpants and princess cat are too cute!

3.5 overall; the premise is getting a little repetitive at this point, but the characters are always great.

I absolutely loved the anime ‘Sleepy princess in the demon castle’ so when i found out my library had the manga i HAD to read them. And they did not disappoint.

If the anime is funny, these books are 10 times better. The humour is perfect and I cannot stop laughing aloud whenever I read these. The art is beautiful, and I cannot get over how funny but interesting the concept of this series is.

1000000/10 recommend you read this, it's funny and such a good read!

It's winter, which means it's cold in the castle. This means that the Princess needs a better bed and underwear, and glass to cover that huge window in her cell. It also means that Christmas is coming. In the demon world, though, Santa is a very different thing, and you don't want him to visit. Syalis is determined to get her present, though.
Syalis is pretty much a terrible person. All of the creatures are terrified of her, and are too afraid to fight her or try to keep her trapped. When one demon tries to defend her, she's proven how very wrong she is. Syalis seems to think that all demons are immortal, and so it's okay to carve them up and take their body parts as needed. She's honestly horrible. If this weren't episodic and comedy-based, this could be a horrifying story.
Thankfully, it is a comedy. And it's a rather fun series to read.

I am loving this manga so much. It is just so nice and calming while also being chaotic.

Reread Sept 2023:
- The Stamper cat is just absolutely adorable for a demon. I love its attitude and powers, just so cool. And that princess stamper cat fusion was so totally cute.
- I also really enjoyed the holiday shenanigans. I feel like thought the series we end up doing Christmas a couple times so I suppose it could serve as a way to track time throughout the series. So let's count this as Christmas 1.
- The introduction of the demon council, they have no idea what is in store for them.
- Yay, more time with the Demon King! His and the princess's dynamics are just superb. I especially love it when he gets super flustered by her actions. He just doesn’t know what to do with her sometimes.
- The poor demon cleric, this really is only the start of his troubles.

I have really mixed feelings about this volume, and maybe it's because it has been a while since I read the last volume, but while I found the adventures fun, I had mixed feelings about the graphics. They felt very cluttered and busy. It was hard to focus on the story sometimes.
I think the concept of the story is cute, but it lacks consistency. Each chapter is a subsequent night, but clearly more than individual nights are passing between chapters sometimes.

I don't like the characters' spoiled brat attitude. And I don't like it when I haven't seen any character developments yet. But I am just reading it for the sake of it. It does kind of get dull and repetitive in the end. Wonder if Demon King Twilight-sama and Princesses Suyaris-chan are hinted as a romantic couple by the author?
