Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

The Straw Hats are definitely Straw-Hatting up a storm in this arc! Law - not to mention Doflamingo! – may be somewhat confused by the choices Luffy and the others are making. But those of us who have been sailing with them from the beginning know that they could never allow widespread suffering to stand, regardless of how much trouble it might get them in to oppose it! And, well, Dressrosa is ruled by a guy who just turned the whole island into a death game tournament, so…

There’s a lot of good fight moments in here, but one of my favorites is Sanji literally flying to the rescue of Nami, Chopper, and Brook, ready to take on a warlord way above his power level: “When my crew is crying, that’s your cue TO STAY THE HELL AWAY!”
(Glad to see you’re finally admitting that you include the lads in that sentiment, Sanji!)

We also learn here an interesting tidbit about the Celestial Dragons (those aristocratic assholes we met in Sabaody, buying slaves under the protection of the World Goverment even when that’s supposed to illegal): This will be expanded on later!

The other big reveal in this part of the arc is: It is great to see the tearful reunion between him and Luffy. He also makes a very cute pair with Koala (matching !), the human slave girl that Fisher Tiger returned home, who used to have a permanent-fixed-smile trauma response. Oda says of her: “…I was glad to see that many folks realized who she was. The people of the Revolutionary Army all have their own reasons for opposing how the world works. But if you look at her title of ‘Assistant Fish-Man Karate Master’…it brings a tear to your eye.” [Redacted] also gets a TERRIFIC line for a revolutionary: “My fingers are dragon claws*. (Grabs onto giant marine sword). Claws designed to tear down the accumulation of undue power! (Sword cracks apart)”
*Get it? If you’ve read to this point you will!

Viola’s point that she would rather put her trust in a bunch of pirates than the navy or the government, because she knows the government and the “elites” allowed Doflamingo to do whatever he likes to them is VERY real! We know it’s probably gonna turn out OK here, because Luffy absolutely does not want to conquer anyone or be a king in a normal sense. But that kind of “I will trust anyone who actually DOES something!” desperation happens in the real world, and can have less-than-ideal outcomes. In fact, we’ve seen that in the ‘One Piece’ world too…

The story of the Tontattas - the “fairies” of the island - definitely reads like Oda looked at the Oompah Loompahs in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and (correctly) went: “Wow, that’s real fucked up!” So, gotta love that!

I’m also quite enjoying the introduction of Bartolomeo, who is somewhere between a Luffy cultist and what you’d get if you inserted a ‘One Piece’ super fan into the story itself:
“Bartolomeo: That nose over there. It looks just like the nose of Mr. Sniper King, who shot through the heart o’ the flag atop the Tower of Law…(freaking out) OHMYGAWD! An’ together with Miss Robin, who was shot through the heart by her crew’s conscious act of turnin’ against the entire world for the sake of their mate!
[Redacted]: Uggh, what are you so excited about, nerd! SHUT UP!”

He could definitely get grating eventually, but for now that shit’s just hilarious. And at least he’s useful, with his devil fruit powers making a very effective shield.

Speaking of Usopp: Mugiwara no Goofy called his role in the story here ‘Pinocchio Jesus’…and I really don’t have a better description!

Dress Rosa just keeps delivering with the story, action and humor. It's a long arc so far but there isn't a dull moment with the straw hats running rampant at an insane pace. I'm torn between getting to the conclusion of Dress Rosa and not wanting it to end.

This omnibus has us full on in Dressrosa and I have to be honest, I don't love it. It feels a bit formulaic so far, following the same general plot events other arcs have (explore mystery in new place, meet new friends and potential enemies who will be friends, *gasp* someone is related to someone else, mystery revealed, sad flashback, oh no looks like the bad guys will win, big fight, and so on). The only exciting bit so far was the reveal of ~mystery people~ but even then I wasn't terribly surprised.

I'm interested to see how it all ties together in the end and to learn more about Law and Doflamingo and it's still One Piece so it's still fun and good but not my favorite so far.

Oh boy, this is getting interesting. I think Dressrosa is becoming one of my favorite arcs alongside Marineford and Enies Lobby. It's just so good and there are actual real stakes unlike in anything Fishman Island or Punk Hazard related (those arcs were fun too but just not on the same level of fun).

And I think that my enjoyment of Dressrosa is mostly thanks to Doflamingo who is just such a menace. He is probably the most evil One Piece villain and I love him for that reason. Like... I hate Akainu more but that's because he's a little bitch and his entire personality is just "your daddy" jokes.

But honestly... these volumes are very entertaining and fun and the cast of characters in them is very endearing and amusing. I can give this 5 stars without a doubt and I'm so excited for more.

The following part of this review will contain SPOILERS!

Okay, let's get to the juicy part. My guys... something amazing happened here... Sabo showed up and ate the mera mera no mi (I think that's the name of the devil fruit). Oh, I love Sabo and how he went into the tournament under the pretence of being Luffy. And then how he said that he hopes Ace is watching... literal chills. Also my man is the second in command in the revolutionary army so good for him... he gets to hang out with Luffy's old man all the time.

Speaking of Luffy... I love this man. I love how the entire fight against Doflamingo is based on how Rebecca bought him three lunches and now he has to help her. And the fact that he laughs at Pica's high voice is just such a Luffy thing to do... I mean... people die over the same thing but Luffy is just like, oh this is so funny, let's laugh at this giant man.

Now of course we have to talk about Doffy as well because he's the star of the show. He such an ass and I love that. He tells Law that he's pathetic for holding a grudge but I don't think that Law is the only one holding a grudge here. Also I love his irritation when he finds out that Luffy isn't the one fighting in the Colosseum anymore. And no I need Law's backstory because I want to hate Doffy even more and I need to know what made a child Law emo.

The supporting characters are also so good. I'm starting to like Bartholomeu a lot, especially after the scene where he helped Bellamy and called him a friend because they fought together in a ring. That was just wholesome. Also the soldier toy turned out to be Rebecca's father which, yeah, I was expecting it. But he had an enemies to lovers romance with her mom which is cool (if only she wasn't 16 at the time because he was like 25). I just found it annoying that when he was still a toy kept switching the subject. That was kinda annoying.

And we also have to talk about Usopp. Or rather God Usopp. My man turned from a hero to a liar and a coward to a literal god. And just when he thought this was over Doffy announced that his bounty is the highest because he pissed him off the most. Legendary.

[SPOILERS]

Rating: 100000/5

(Rating is 100% objective and has nothing to do with my husband being in this volume)

I am actually speechless. The "Toy" situation is genuinely diabolical!! Imagine spending years with your loved ones while they have no idea who you are. The PAIN. Kyros, you have my eternal respect, brother. 🫡

The Villainy:
Can we applaud Doflamingo's brilliant scheme? Was it evil? Absolutely. But was it genius? Definitely. The man is a literal mastermind. Best villain entry? Possibly.

The Hot Take:
Usopp running away while the Tontattas were being slaughtered felt so OOC. I was actually SHOOK. I love him because he’s a coward who steps up despite the fear, but to not even pause when they cried for help? That was a hard watch.

THE HUSBAND ENTRY 🎩🔥

Even though I know it’s him now, I’ll never forget the "week-to-week" struggle years ago... the "COULD IT BE? IT MUST BE! PLS!" vibes were real. I love seeing the snippets of Ace and Luffy in him—the recklessness, the "do things my way" attitude... they are 100% brothers.

And his STRENGTH? Coming from someone who plays Pirate Warriors 3, y’all know he’s the strongest of the three, and now with the Mera Mera no Mi? It’s over.

Seeing what he did to Bastille left me so conflicted. It makes you realize the Revolutionary Army and the World Government are two sides of the same coin. Both have families and a sense of duty. It puts "enemies" in war into perspective—you’re just the villain in someone else’s story. What is truly "good"? That panel gave me so many thoughts.

P.S. Luffy apologizing to Rebecca because he couldn’t give her the fruit was so kiyooooot

Series: One Piece #76-75
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

This is another action packed volume that continues the Dressrosa storyline. The Straw Hats have all been split up and are dealing with different aspects of the plan to bring down Doflamingo. Nami, Sanji, Brook, Chopper, and Momonoske have been tasked with sailing Sunny to Zou to keep Caesar and Momo safe from Doflamingo. The rest of the crew is creating havoc for Doflamingo and his family. They also find a new ally in a few Revolutionary Army officers, including Luffy’s brother Sabo who he thought was dead. I love that we finally get to see Sabo and Luffy briefly reunite and that they are able to rescue Ace’s Flame-Flame fruit. I really can’t wait to see a longer reunion in the future.

I had forgotten how action packed and kind of frantic this storyline was. Doflamingo really has a dangerous ability that he uses ruthlessly. This volume also gives us a brief glimpse of Law’s history and why he is so determined to bring down Doflamingo. I had also forgotten that Usopp is labeled a god and ends up with a higher bounty from Doflamingo than Luffy, which is just hilarious. Also, while Luffy may not be a revolutionary like his father, he still ends up leading a lot of revolutions to restore kingdoms.

Of the many siege stories in One Piece, this one has the reader most invested in its participants. The gladiators (particularly Bartolomeo), the Riku family, the Don Quixote family, the Navy, the Tontattas, the Straw Hat Pirates... There are so many players we are actually interested in seeing on the page because they each had some form of set up, and that really aids the epic scope of it all.

The toy storyline was masterful, as was the conclusion of the colosseum match. Doflamingo is deliciously villainous.

I'm more than halfway into the published story of One Piece so far. These volumes focus on Dressrosa and the hell created by Doflamingo.

It's good to see a couple of old characters being introduced at this point in the story. It seems like they'll play a big role in the future. But beyond that, I feel that the Dressrosa arc is starting to stretch. There are multiple plots running wild simultaneously but when a climb to the hill as a plot point is 4 to 5 chapters long, there are things that could have been better.

What I find different in one piece is the deep emotional level that is handled. Something i don't see in other shounen... And although is mostly humourous, it can be very sad at the same time. And that deep sad lift up the epicness of some moments that becomes unforgettable.

This arc of Dressrosa has everything about these points and more, and Luffy is becoming one of characters I like the most in any medium: nobody handle unjustice with the spirit he does.

This omnibus contains a lot of tension which ends up erupting in the chaos of battle this series has a way of shifting towards come the end of a massive arc. Luffy and the gang are spread around and working to try and work to take down DoFlamingo. There are some moments later in volume where Usopp truly lives up to his roll as comedic relief. To the point his antics are actually amusing instead of simply frustrating.

I'm so divided by this volume... First of all, it has a lot of amazing moments, twists and turns, and the plot is getting real serious now, with a lot of escalation that feels natural.

However, the execution is not exactly perfect. Some parts drag a bit too much, and I feel Oda might have spread the plot a bit too much, with so many threads that might not have needed to take as long as they do.

This is still a good volume, but maybe it should've had been cut a bit shorter.

The first half of this book is a convoluted mess in both story and art. I really couldn't tell what the heck was going on. Thankfully by the 2nd half of the book we have the heart and intense fight scenes we know and love from One Piece.
This time around Usop takes the limelight as the unintentional hero in this story arc.
If I could I would give this volume 3 1/2 stars.

I think my favorite thing about One Piece is that in a single chapter I can be crying at the emotional depths in one panel and then laughing at the absurdism humor in the very next.
