Rate this book
Seirin High’s greatest basketball superstar was the one no one literally saw coming—the invisible Kuroko!

Tetsuya Kuroko doesn’t stand out much. In fact, he’s so plain that people hardly ever notice when he’s around. Though he’s just as unremarkable on the basketball court, that’s where his plainness gives him an unexpected edge—one that lets him execute awesome moves without others noticing!

It’s Seirin’s final match against Rakuzan in the Winter Cup, and Kuroko’s been…defeated?! In a cruel twist of fate, all of his breakthroughs have ended up robbing him of his defining talent—his invisibility! Seirin’s already at a crippling disadvantage when they encounter Rakuzan’s secret weapon— Mayuzumi, an upgraded version of the phantom sixth man! Can Seirin make one final push?!

“If they keep it up till the bitter end, as long as Seirin doesn’t have their wills completely crushed, basketball isn’t a sport where you can turn it around with just one blow, but even so, as long as they don’t give up, then the possibility will never be 0%”

This has certainly been an intense, emotional game.

While the start of this set of volumes was very low seeing the determination, courage, and persistence with which Seirin rose to the challenge was quite inspiring. Truly, we start to see the peak of everything they have worked so hard for, and the satisfaction is real.

Seirin's greatness is made all the more impressive when we take into account the stark contrast that Rakuzan, especially Akashi have with the way they do things. Making for quite an interesting and dynamic experience.

Even if there are low moments, the strong thread of fight and hope is refreshing and inspiring to see bloom.

Above all, seeing Kagami and Kuroko rise to the occasion and trust each other so much will always be a highlight for me.

“[…] Basketball players practice every day without rest. To carry out super plays. But before that, they shoot normally, and score normally for that very reason.”

“When one team’s running away with the game…there’s no sport more boring than basketball. It’s known as a sport of percentages. In other words, the score mostly reflects the skill gap between the opposing teams. … Yes, there’s no sport as boring as basketball. But only…if this were truly the end.”

Another painful volume to read - but only because Seirin is getting their butts kicked for 90% of it. And then Kuroko is crying on top of that. If the Teiko Arc was Kuroko’s “dark night of the soul” moment, then this whole volume is Seirin’s “darkest just before dawn” moment.

But there is a dawn to look forward to towards the end of the volume; the faintest trace of the sun rising. But Akashi definitely won’t make it easy. His expressions in the last few chapters fill me with dread, despite the progress Seirin is making. (The progress all of Seirin is making, by the way. It’s great to see that everyone is going to get a little moment in this final match, including the bench.)

And now, only one volume remains. Almost a quarter and a half of playing time to go. Will Kuroko’s basketball win over Akashi? My heart won’t be able to take it. But even so…. Seirin, fight!!

"It's a power battle!!" (pg 158)

This picks up directly after the last scene in the last volume. This is an intense battle between foes with unexpected twists. The tension in this one is the most memorable of them all.

But to help out with the relaxation, the author includes bloopers that are actually really funny. I rarely read this series's bloopers because I just fly from each chapter to the next. I had to take a break from that because this is a stressful game!! My favorite blooper is the one on 146.

This one features Kuroko as the main character more than the rest simply because of the event within that really shakes him up. That poor guy.

But each of the boys on the Seirin team gets their own little arc, just for this game, in this book. I'm so proud of all these people! They're doing so well.

Art style is top notch as always. I think the reason why people don't like the art style because of how the author draws Kuroko's eyes.

At the time of this LONG OVERDUE review, I have finished the entire series.

Imitators, Duplicators, and Originators
"We have seen imitators! We've also seen duplicators! But now...It's time for the originators!" -Drumline

The above line from the movie Drumline sums up what the bulk of this volume is all about. Originator vs. Imitator. Old vs. New. Experience vs. Talent. Will vs. Skill. That is all. This is also where my comment about Akashi comes into play. First, let's talk about the imitator as said by Akashi.

"The same...? Not exactly. Yes, he possesses the same lack of presence as Tetsuya. But his fundamentals are a cut above. His skill set also extends beyond passing. In other words, Tetsuya is the outdated model. WHILE CHIHIRO MAYUZUMI...IS THE NEW PHANTOM SIXTH MAN!" -Akashi Yeah, yeah, Akashi we hear the song and dance, but you TAUGHT him to be the phantom man. We see how Akashi approached Mayuzumi. We also see Akashi saying Mayuzumi could surpass Kuroko. There is one problem there, which I will let Kuroko explain.

"The Phantom Sixth Man Title...I'm sorry, But...I'm Not Ready To Give It Up." -Kuroko. You bet you are not ready to give it up! Kuroko IS the Phantom Sixth Man. Sure, Akashi scouted him and thought he could do the job, but Akashi didn't TEACH Kuroko. Akashi had inklings, but he did not know what it would take to create the style that would create a Phantom Sixth Man. That was all Kuroko. Kuroko built this style from the ground up from the influences of magic. He tried, rearrange, and discard things to get the product that Akashi saw. Akashi only knows the final product intimately. He doesn't have the knowledge to have the freedom to change up the final product. This is comparable to Thomas Edison. Edison tried many ways not to get to lightbulb. He invented then got rid of a lightbulb design that was longer lasting than what we know today.

Kuroko's style of play is like the lightbulb. To borrow from Aomine, the only one who can beat Kuroko's own style is himself. Sure, people can come close, but at the end of day it is up to Kuroko and his will to try to win for his team. He will try to provoke Mayuzumi to get us this line: "The Upgraded Version's Been Digging...HIS OWN GRAVE!" Yet, I will allow Murasakibara and Kise explain why it will be hard for Mayuzumi and Akashi (as he is the one pulling the strings) to defeat Kuroko:
Murasakibara: "He was probably thinking that too...But in the moment, instincts take over. Basically...He ain't all that."
Kise: "Sticking to the shadows...is easier said than done. It's crazy hard to pull off in practice. A player's gotta suppress all his natural instincts...with steel-cold rationality. This "New and Improved" Phantom Sixth Man...Chihiro Mayuzumi...He might have better fundamentals...But Kuroko's better in a different way. With his long career as the Sixth Man...And the will to fight for his team...In other words...THE WEIGHTY RESOLVE TO BE A SHADOW!"

Miscellaneous Moments
"I can overcome all the mental blocks in the world, but that can't change the gap in natural ability. I can't measure up to you. But stopping you? That's a different story. It's a good thing you're not as clever as me." -Izuki. Izuki had a good moment in the second half of this volume. This moment really show case what he can do even up against an Uncrowned General.

Hercules vs. Iron Will: This is entertaining matchup, but is far from over. The same applies to Hyuga and Mibuchi. It was interesting to see that Hyuga admired Mibuchi's style of play.

Verdict: If you want to know what happens in this volume then you have to read it.
