Librarian's Note: This is an alternate cover for this title
Earth has finally colonized other planets and galaxies but can Team Vergate find one sustainable?
A bomb. A killer. Perfect. Three things that would change their lives or destroy them.
When a bomb is detonated and kills a Perfect leader on the planet Vindico, they need someone to blame. A bomb marker, Megan Berry, is just who they need to make Imperfect for their Perfect little plan.
Alvan Eatum, an engineer with a past, finds himself in a dangerous situation after asking the wrong questions.
Xenon Morgenstern, an astrophysics, is being torn apart while wanting to save his brother from the people he doesn't trust.
Skipp Flynn, a captain in the Perfect military, finds out he did less than perfect on his last mission. He has no choice but to pay the consequences for his actions.
Four people with nothing in common might be in the Perfect's plan more than they know.
Every hero has an origin story. Grace M. Morris traveled into a story one time, and no one has been able to pull her back ever sense. It happened kinda sudden, but she found out that she could also create worlds for others to walk in. Ever since that fateful day she has been hard at work creating her own speculative stories. Right now, she is working on a NA/adult epic fantasy series, “Blessings of the Fae”. She is also revamping her YA sci-fi dystopian series, “Team Vergate”, that has a Christian basis.
Grace never stops listening to music while writing. When she is not hard at work creating her next world, she is trying to figure out this thing called life. Currently she is helping her Dad repair the house and helping her Mom with their kids craft website. She also loves to bake (especially cakes), draw, read, spend time with her pets, spend time with her family, and watch movies. Now in her twenties she resides in the state of Washington.
So yep. That was hilarious and a wonderful kick off to a new series ( although it was gruesome.... sometimes. xD )
Any adventure, intense, sic fiction fans reading this?? Well if that's you I can promise you this is your book. I mean mix some humor, science, adventure, planets, and some pash guns together and you get, BAM! A good book. With some heart stopping characters... I mean who wouldn't like Xenon!?? *screeches* Or David??
*coughs* So the description was perfect, like otherworldly perfect. Sic Fiction perfect. It was intense, scary, and highly action packed. The words seemed to flow right into the next making the reader disappear into the adventure like any good book should. I did have a few discomforts... but they were minor. I tasted dystopian. I hate dystopian. Also there were some parts that could probably have used rewriting, but I could brush through it. And it made it to my 5 star marking, so good job. *gives high five*
The characters were awesome and I cried at Xenon's imperfect Perfect stupidity. I laughed at Alvin's sarcastic humor. I applauded Skipp's wonderful fighting skills. And I smiled at Megan's easy going destructive hobby. If you could call it that. xD
Megan : A bomb maker. I got to read about about a BOMB MAKER!! Who gets to read about bomb makers??? She was just completely amazing guys. I liked her thought out moves and calculated strategy. For example : "You want to kidnap a captain? No. Nu uh. Never."
Alvin : I didn't know what to think of him at first, because honestly I never liked these type of characters. But his usefulness and smart brain ( also his lovable humor ) won me over and Team Vergate wouldn't be a team without him!
Skipp : Okay. This is my favorite character, *heart eyes* When is he gonna get a girl.... because yeah. He needs a girl so I can ship him!! xD Can I just say this captain isn't just a captain because he can fly. Hello? He can FIGHT too. *reminisces* O.o
Xenon : Okay this guy is attractive in an alien sorta way. xD I mean he's smart, he's fast, he's powerful, he's a good leader. But he just don't got everything right in his head. Dude, your Imperfect. Like, duh....
Deker : *weak laugh* Uh, no. Nope. Naught. Never. Bye, bye. Thank you very much. ( in other words this guy freaked me out.... and his end? *shudders* )
Favorite Line(s) : "Captain there's a girl who wants to talk to you." "Send her away." "She says it's important." "Send. Her. Away." "She says it's about your wedding." Skipp spits out his coffee, "My what??" "Your wedding." "I'm not getting married!"
*dies laughing* That was the best! *squeals*
So yep. This book was awesome and Sic Fiction is growing on me, but still science and me don't mix... so we're on a tolerable level for now. xD I enjoyed the adventure, the thrill of danger, the "kidnapping", and most of all Skipp. xD But Team Vergate, is awesome and everyone needs to read about the Perfect Black Birds!! So yes... grab the book and finish it in a day.
**NOTE** I received this book in PDF form from the author for a review. The review is my own thoughts and opinions. ;)
Sadly, this one just wasn't quite my kind of story. I thought the characters had a lot of potential, but I didn't ever feel like I really got to know them except on a surface level. The prologue was definitely unique and compelling, but I never made the jump to how we had gotten from A to B. Had the planets been colonized before the "Perfect Children" arrived? Did everyone in the society start out as "Perfect," or were some considered "Imperfect" all along? Were all "Imperfects" supposed to be condemned by law, and if so, why the complicated plots to get rid of some of them? I'm not saying these questions didn't have good answers, just that I was left very confused about how things were supposed to work and what it all meant.
Also, there were a lot of editing issues, which really distracted me, especially the way the writing kept jumping from past to present tense. Sometimes I had a hard time telling who was speaking during a conversation, and things got a bit repetitive at points. Also, I had a hard time believing some of the plot points, which was probably magnified by how fast everything was moving.
Finally, I would probably have given this a half-star more if it hadn't been quite so...brutal? It wasn't all the time, but there were several scenes where people were killed in various ways, and I flinched a little at the starkness of it all. I know we're dealing with bad guys here, but it did bug me enough to knock off the extra half-star I would otherwise have given it.
Content--violence; people killed ; blood, wounds, and dead bodies; kidnapping and theft (debated)
What a unique and interesting read! The Exile, book one of the Team Vergate series, tells the story of Megan Berry, a bomb-maker and one of the "Perfects" of a planet called Vindico. I give this book a solid four stars for its intriguing storyline, fast pace, and fascinating worldbuilding, as well as its amazingly lovable characters.
The Characters:
Megan~ To my surprise, I actually liked her! Now I say that because I normally don't like female protagonists in most modern books-- too annoying and clichéd. But Megan here is a BOMB-MAKER, and even though I would have liked to see more of that, it was really cool.
Alvan~ He was fun! I liked his dry, sarcastic sense of humor, although I must say his personality could definitely have been expanded on. He acted so much like Xenon sometimes that I got confused more than once.
Xenon~ Haha, this guy made me laugh.
Skipp~ Oh my goodness Skipp!! He's undoubtedly my favorite character. Dry, down-to-earth, and practical-- but in a fun way. And wow, can he fight. xD
Plot:
It was good. A little fast, but I can keep up with that. :D
Worldbuilding:
Awesomely done! I'm not a fan of intergalactical sci-fi, but I am good with dystopian, and this system was done so well for a dystopian novel.
Writing:
Ah, here comes the part. Grace's writing is very descriptive and quite lovely, perfect for the genre, but it had lots of grammatical errors and choppy wording that caught my eye. The dialogue, too, felt awkward at times. Other than that, no problem.
Content:
*coughs* This is a dystopian novel, so expect some darkness and no small amount of bloodshed. I can handle violence of this level fine, but others may not feel the same way. There is little trace of romance and no language as far as I can recall.
Overall this was a great book. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. A positive review was not required; all opinions and views expressed are my own.*
At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to write reviews for my own books and to post them on Goodreads. At first it seemed kind of like a sin, because, well, I written the book. However, after watching so many other authors doing it, I thought that it would be fun to do it too.
So is this a review?
Nope! This is my book child, I brought into the world. It's also my first, and so dear to my heart.
Even though I updated it recently, this was my first book, so its not Perfect. It may still contain some grammar errors, it might not always be written in deep POV, but it did survive the Perfect's and it did begin a pretty good series (even if I'm a little bias.)
This was not my first book written.
But it is my first book published and is the beginning of many things.
The beginning of my writing career.
The beginning of the series.
The beginning of Perfect's.
The beginning of the Team Vergate fandom.
It is not Perfect, the next book gets better, then next better after that, and hopefully the next after that when I learn more about this writing business.
This book might not be for you. But if you do read it, the next one is a little better, I hope. It does have some violence and some other things that might be considered as content, but overall it is a pretty clean read.
Basically in the future there is two types of people, Perfect's and Imperfect's. Life and Death. But the line between the two is undetermined. And as Megan Berry, Xenon Morgenstern, Alvan Eatum, and Skipp Flynn find out there might be more about the Perfect's than flawless people. With action pack, space travel, and Perfect little lies is a story about faith, love, and betrayal.
Anyway, I hope that you will enjoy this space adventure in the future with Perfect's, Megan Berry, Alvan Eatum, Xenon Morgenstern, and Skipp Flynn. Read it near the stars as close as you can!
This is a great start to a series and quite well done for your age. I was impressed with your plot and character development, however the verbs change between present and past tense making it difficult to read. I think all you really need is a good proof reader and you will have a great book. Keep at it!
I received this book as part of a good reads giveaway but the opinions expressed are solely my own.
The Exile was a good mix of sci-fi adventure and human interaction. I liked that the characters drove the story and not the action. There is a lot of action, but dialogue keeps it personal.
