Blaise Corvin served in the US Army in several roles. He has seen the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. He is a sucker for any hobby involving weapons, art, or improv.
He currently lives in Texas, in a house full of enough geeky memorabilia to start a museum.
He likes talking about himself in 3rd person and posting pictures of himself holding tarantulas. Sometimes, he pretends he is not an idiot with a terrible sense of humor.
It's all very eccentric.
Blaise currently writes mostly in the GameLit genre and LitRPG subgenre, exciting new classifications of fiction where characters either play a game (usually VR), or live in a world with game-like elements.
Delvers LLC is GameLit, lightly LitRPG, mostly a Fantasy/SciFi Adventure. Secret of the Old Ones is hard LitRPG, complete with XP and leveling...plus has Lovecraftian and steampunk elements (because why not?).
I tried reading Welcome to Ludus about 1 year ago and had to drop it 30% in. Feel free to look at my review at the time for the finer points, but in a nutshell the quality of writing was just too much of an impediment to me immersing in the story. Blaise Corvin is a prominent author in the LitRPG genre though, so I figured I'd give him another try with a newer offering.
Unfortunately, while this book may be a bit better, the same problems are present. About 90% of the first 7 pages are a brutally boring infodump. Trying to keep my eyes from skimming down the page was like an 8 year old trying to hold the leash on a rottweiler when a rabbit runs by. The economy of words is also very poor. The wording is very passive and bloated even during action scenes.
Example: "I'd been hoping she'd be crazy enough to grab my hair, but I wasn't that lucky. [...] Just like I'd expected, the beautiful killer darted in, her knife going for a killing strike to my heart while her other hand darted out to secure my knife hand."
The passive and overly long description interferes with what is supposed to be a fast-paced scene. I don't know why the character feels a need to note the beauty of her attacker for the 3rd time in the middle of the fight (this is 1st person pov so details should be specific to what the character pays attention to rather than just throwing random stuff in there). Also, I just tend to have a problem with repeating the same verb twice in a sentence in general, but even moreso in an overly long sentence (see 'darted').
As other negative reviews have mentioned, a character with multiple stab wounds who's doing the whole cliche dying speech goes on FOREVER in a scene that failed to be serious and only had me laughing at the levels of cliche that I rarely see outside of a parody.
I gave the book about 30 pages before concluding that there is no way I will be able to enjoy it. If there's a good story in there, unfortunately the quality of writing again is just getting in the way.
For some reason I am into this genre. A lot of the books though are kinda slop and this one was tough to read. Yet I read it all and quickly. Dialogue alone feels like every other sentence is a quip. The author has to explain the characters thought process and reasoning for anything ever that happens. If you took cocomelon and morphed it into a sci fi-fantasy novel, that’s a good way to describe this. A couple of my favorite quotes from the book: “Everything was all so senseless. Nothing made sense.” 3 separate instances (that I counted) of “I gained some respect for them”
I need to deliver a message to the people who add "ess" to the end of words: Wheness theess revolutioness comesess, youess willess beess firstess againstess theess walless.
"Burglaress" my arse...
I'd also like just ONE bloody book this year to have a female MC who ain't a rape vic, could that be possible? Getting to be that "stong female character" means something very specific.
Also "snarky AI" is used by one actual AI and one imprinted intelligence, maybe chill with the troping, esp when combined with the crazy not-quite-goddess.
Really bad, I did not make it through the first 2 chapters. The story might be great or whatever but the writing is bad. The Chapter 1 friends murdered while the MC is just standing there, not doing or saying anything really made me cringe. But then the 10 minute long speech from her friend with her lungs full of blood was just to much. That speech was just to long and was really stupid. She was shanked three times in the chest, blood in her lungs, if she talks that much she is dead if not bleeding out. You would be in to much pain to talk either way. Then when you think it is almost done, the girl goes on for another 5 minutes.
Weak ass main character, can't handle 1 or 2 people being killed in the first 2 chapters. No way you can call her a badass. If she was a badass, the crazy chick wouldn't of made it past killing the first girl.
I have read all of Blaise’s books. But first let me say that I rate books base on how much I enjoyed it and wether I would read it again. 3 stars I liked but wouldn’t read it again. 4 stars I might read it again and 5 stars I will read it more than twice at least.
I try not to write a review with a rating less than 3 because that just messed up.
I really fell into the Delvers LLC storyline from his first book. Nora is in the same universe. I really have been enjoys the real life issues she is struggling with. She grows and opens up as a character. What I really like is that she is a real person who has to struggle to make choices right for her and not let others dictate her life. She may make bad choices but she learns from them and seems to grow as a character. It also opened this universe much more with her view of it. She’s a native to Ludas so she has a much different outlook on things than I as an American male have. Which I think really comes into play and made me understand the world much more.
Blaise’s writing craft just keep getting better and better. Take a chance on this book and sit back and enjoy the ride. This book rate if may go up if or when I read it again.
I was a huge fan of Delvers LLC and was looking forward to this book as well. I waited to write this review until after I finished all three books so that I could make a fair comparison. It was fairly obvious that the author was attempting to write something from the perspective of a woman and was trying to flesh out some back story for his world. With that in mind, I cannot recommend this book.
If you like interesting magic systems, this book has it. It's not as intricate as one by Brandon Sanderson, but honestly, nobody's is that intricate. The universe around Ludus is legitimately interesting and his take on humans is quite funny. There is obviously a larger world that we only get glimpses of and that is intriguing. In spite of these strong points, the book suffers from issues of writing that will make your head spin. I mean, "why would I even like this character?" issues. I'll go into them below.
##### Spoiler Warning ###### The book suffers from 3 main problems:
1) Depth - There are places where the author could have given us depth early in the book by introducing us to characters that would matter to the main character. Instead he kills her best friends in literally the first chapter and while I'm sure that Nora felt it deeply, I just felt that random character number 4 needed to stop breathing so we could get on with the story. Also, the entire story suffers from this as it's obvious that the author is just using the world as a reason to talk about his magic system (which is legitimately cool). Do you remember when they killed Jory in ASOIAF? Yes, you do because you care about the character. This book doesn't have that.
2) Pacing - Dear God does this book suffer from dyslexia. We should have ended the book with Enheduanna giving her an orb and her getting her powers. Instead we get this in just the first few chapters after she takes on a group of 4 people (one of them orb bonded) by herself with no powers. Then she spends days learning to air skate. All of these things could have been done in interesting ways and simply were not. The bad pacing leaves you with no emotional connection to Nora.
3) Nora - Don't get me wrong, this could be a good character. All the pieces are there. She focuses on all the wrong things though. This is a woman who we find out later used to cut herself. She came up in an abusive relationship with a guardian who was quite evil. Her best friend helped her stay grounded through all of this. Turns out her guardian was involved in a evil god cult and was trying to bring demons into the world. When did we find this out? Book 3. All of this should have been forshadowed in the first book to give us some depth. As a result of these things, Nora comes across as shallow and unlikable.
Not sure If need a spoiler warning on this but I do describe some aspects of the way this book progresses.
Okay so I can give this 3 stars but if could have been so much better. This book tries to be to many things and ends up only being a 3 star book because of that. if the author had kept the story on one track it would have been so much better. The story starts out as a coming of age for the MC character but then goes into a lit RPG thing and before you know it we are in a dungeon type of book. That is not all, then we change again to a hero bet up the bad guys and skills book. I liked parts of the book for sure and the series shows potential but I just found the story all over the place, a more stream line plot would have been better in my option. I will continue with this series as I said I did like most of it and the story has gotten more interesting near the end. Hopefully the author can maintain the interest in the next book.
DNF @ 3%. Not for me. Didn't enjoy the self absorbed beginning from the male perspective. MC - Nora? goes on chatting for awhile on making a big deal about people's sexual attractions. And appearances like no one would ever be with MC because she is hideous. I should have know better (and had known better than to get the other ludus books) but I got the book and not a surprise. Thank goodness Audible has a return feature.
A token gay sidekick on the first page before any type of story is established... Pandering and exhausting. Sexuality does not substitute for good stories and characters. Not that it matters but I'm LGBT+.
The first fight sequence uses the word "beautiful" so many times it distracted me from the whole scene. Lots of run-on sentences and repeated notes.
Pretty good book. I have read some of the Delvers LLC. books, but it honestly never occurred to me that knowing backstory of any ox the characters would be interesting. However, I'm finding it very interesting, and I plan to follow Nora's adventures to their fullest.
This book takes you back to Ludus, a planet that is used as a testing ground to try out alien weapons. The "God" of the planet teleports unsuspecting alien races to the planet and researches what would happen if he gave some of them special powers.
This is definitely a new take on the LitRPG genre since it doesn't actually take place in a digital world. They are given their powers through orbs that you can swallow, and the orbs have AI built into them that allow you to "level up" after you gain experience, and find more orbs.
I originally stumbled upon this settings reading through the Delvers LLC series. The Nora Hazard series takes place in the same world, but instead of following two freshly teleported people it focuses on Nora Hazard. She was born on the planet, but of course is an orphan...because aren't they all? :)
Her parents were well off then they died. So she had to join a gang and lived a hard life until the day she was offered a special orb.
This book definitely follows the template, but It's fun.
Rating: 3.5 I would recommend to someone if they were running out of things to read in the LitRPG genre
Really enjoy the Delver's universe and the world of Ludas. Nora's powers were interesting and the set up was cool. It was nice to see small references to other characters from the author's books.
The reason I couldn't rate it as high as the Delvers LLC books, was Nora to me just felt like a female Henry. She was brash to the point it worked against her, most interactions being Nora telling someone to get to the point and that type of thing, and while Henry has been placed into a strange world I felt Nora didn't have the same excuse. Although in all fairness the author did try to offset this with her rough upbringing.
Henry usually has Jason and the rest of the gang to offset this behavior so it doesn't annoy the reader too much, but unfortunately Mitigating Risk was largely a solo affair for Nora. That being said hopefully with the conclusion of the first book the situation will change for the MC and allow things to seem more organic.
It really is a strange (in a good way) blend of fantasy, science fiction and game fiction. The MC has a sketch of a personal history, so even if the character grew and changed as a person, it would difficult to see it. That's when the sketchy background delivers its impact. It's hard to understand the context of the character's struggle or the impact of the background struggle on the character, when the relationships between or the identities of the factions is not clear.
That the MC is introspective seems whiney because of the above. The writing is fine, especially the combat and scene descriptions. Too bad about the background universe and the MC backstory.
Man, reviews are difficult. I had honest to goodness tears rolling down my face as I finished this book. The protagonist of this story, not a hero, is socially roughly awkward in every way, yet an absolute bad-a$$. Seeing someone snap and take care of business is magical. This was a wonderful read and Blaise Corvin has quickly risen to one of my favorite authors (after Delvers LLC's epic start popped by Corvin cherry). I am really looking forward to where Nora Hazards journey will lead and I thank you for this tale. Keep up the good work, your prose and style are wonderful exactly as is.
I love this book Nora is an amazing character she takes no crap and does what needs to be done. In the main series, Jason is my favorite but Nora gives Jason a run for his money I cant wait to see what her powers/abilities will grow into in the coming books. While this story is a bit shorter it packs a lot in there and it makes for an excellent origin story. The "drake" part had me rolling on the floor laughing my but off Blaise did a fantastic job with that it just kind of hits you with it what's up and you're just like dang wtf man it's so good. Look do your self the favor check this book out you won't regret it
This is another book that prequels his Delvers novels, but in reality needs to be read after those books as I don’t think this book does a good enough job of introducing the world and the particulars of the Gods and magic encountered to be read first. The story was well paced but I think the MC’s personality is still under development by the author as it seemed a bit inconsistent even though it is supposed to be evolving as she powers up and becomes who she needs to be. I will quickly move on to the next book as this one was fun if a bit gory.
I finished the first three Delvrs books, and was craving for more since the fourth isn’t out yet! So, I decided to give the Nora Hazard books a try.
Boy was I pleasantly surprised! I tore through this first book in less than a day. In fact, I read so fast that I did not expect to reach the ending so soon!
Nora is an amazing and extremely fleshed out character. The thought at getting to know her even more in the two other books in the series is exiting to me!
It's been a while since I've read a Ludus book. It did take me a while to get back into the flow of Corvin's story, The story was pretty good as Nora is an interesting character to follow, but her lack of someone to play off of through much of the book is somewhat of a hindrance. The dungeon section was my favorite part, of the story, and the bit with the drake at the end was quite good ;). I hope Nora runs into that orb bonded woman at some point.
TLDR: Book is good. Similar to Drivers series with different powers. Needs more banter.
After reading the first three Delvers books, I turned to the Nora series. I expected similar quality to Delvers and I wasn't disappointed. It is still the same world of Ludus and the same powers. The kicker is that Nora has some unique opportunities in what powers she gets. The book holds up well in comparing it to Drivers but it is missing some of the banter that Delvers has.
Great world building, Nora's temper issues make it hard to root for her at times, though. When faced with a serious challenge, some twist of fate makes it easy.
Non-spoiler: if there were a flood she would be carried off to safety by a giant hungry seagull. Freezing to death? no worries, there's probably a giant ton ton to curl up in. Scary Yeti finds her ton ton? - nah that's Jeff the Sasquatch, a professional skier who's looking for an apprentice!
I will continue with the series, but won't get too far unless Nora stops abusing everyone around her.
Very well written and engaging story. Strong female MC gets targeted by powerful enemies who lurk in the shadows, using catspaws to wreak their nefarious plans. But the gods intervene and upgrade Nora, yet she must figure out how best to use her upgrades with little help. Of course she immediately finds out that bounty killers are tracking her before falling into a dungeon. The path to becoming a hero is not an easy one, but Nora steps up.
All the indie authors call the genre differently, and BC gets away from some of the signature things like HUDs and XP and HP and all that. But I think it’s for the better. The story is good, the world is good, the magic system is good, and importantly BC is not a moral asshole like some of the Russian authors that think women are weak and the dream of every man is a harem at home and the power to do whatever they want.
Blaise really is at his best in this book. It’s gritty and violent. Yet touches on the darkness and anger that a life with violence can bring.
Much more in line with the heroes journey than Delvers LLC, and a bit more robust than Luck Stat Strategy. I’d recommend any fantasy lover to read this - as it’s lighter on the GameLit things and heavier on story and action
This is an installment from Ludus, a couple of years before the Delvers ever show up there. The MC is a native of the planet, and a tough bitch to boot. When an orb (granting her a choice of magic powers) falls into her lap, she makes some interesting choices and adventures. If you have read any of the others in this super in depth world, you know this will be good. If not, thats ok. Its still great. Be warned, you will soon be reading more stories from Ludus.
I have one big problem with the book, and that is book 2 is not out. I wanted it immediately after finishing book one. Oh well, will read the other books by the author.
It was a bit slow at the start, and it really was not easy or fast for the main character, but the slow burn at the start gets really fast after the initial slow kick off. Main character has some angst I thought was pretty well done. I really did like the book, and Im happy with it. It went fast, and really enjoyed it.
This is the first Blaise Corbin book that I've read but it certainly not the last! I love Nora Hazard. She's a strong personality who accepts herself, faults and all. She's all too human as well and needs people around her who she can one with. This is litRPG done well. Seeing how well Nora grows into her powers at such a low level makes you wonder how much stronger she'll get! Even if you are not into litRPG the story is still good SF. Definitely 5 stars for me.
