The Dynasty of Samudragupta unfolds the murky loves and lies of one of the most illustrious clans in history.Rajat Pillai is a graduate from IMI Delhi. He is the author of two previous novels – Path of a Fallen DemiGod and The Dead Woman Writing.
The first time we heard about Rajat Pillai when we read the review of his debut book, "Chandragupta - Path of a Fallen Demigod", by Sheetal Maurya on Halo of Books. We were thoroughly impressed by the review. And that book is still part of my wishlist. So when we saw the author's post about the giveaway of "Yoddha: The Dynasty of Samudragupta" we participated that moment itself. (Due to book we are getting, we have not participated more than 4-5 giveaway in last one year). We were lucky enough to get the review copy. So here I am to present the review of the book.
The story started with Samudragupta. He was the emperor of Magadha, the biggest empire of Aryavarta (Ancient India). Due to security issues, he had sent his sons to undisclosed locations for upbringing. His elder son Ramagupta was raised in military camp as a normal soldier, where in his younger son Chandragupta was raised in a village as a farmer. Ramagupta was brought to the public by Samudragupta ceremoniously. He was announced as future king - Yuvaraj. But Chandragupta's entry was rather unplanned due to his foster mother's (guardian) death. King welcomed him well and decided to give the responsibility of the army and intelligence. Chandra also got engaged with two ladies. And when things were supposed to get good, it became sinister. Chandra started hallucinating and got insane. On the other hand, an assassin entered into Royal guards, his motive was to kill the king or Rama. Read the book to know more.
Good points about the book 1) A flawless and fast-paced story 2) Awesome characterization (Chandra, Samudragupta, and Ramagupta) 3) Light read (even though 330 pages long book didn't fell heavy) 4) A clear understanding of the plot 5) Awesome cover art 6) Easy to follow language usage 7) Good for beginners as well as experts 8) Fewer characters and concentration on the storyline
I would say a sure shot page turner. I don't mind reading other books by the author. Once again sorry for little bit late review.
👉Three words for the book: Gripping Well-researched Adventurous . . 👉I must say it's one of the amazingly written books. The storyline is just too engaging and superbly managed throughout the story. 👉The book has an element of suspense added to this wonderful story from the history, and that makes it very adventurous and gripping. 👉I loved the narration and the language used. It is easy to follow, but in the mid it seems a slow read to me. 👉However, this feeling doesn't last for long. It's an epic story with a beautiful message at the end. 👉I really liked that some life lessons are smartly embedded in this story from which many of the readers can learn a lot. 👉I totally recommend this book to all.
Blurb-It is the story of King of Magadh- King Samudragupta. Story starts when the King won a battle. People of the kingdom liked their king very much. Harishena wanted to write a biography on the life of great King. But there are few parts of the life of the King that he didn’t know, Only heard many rumours about that. But Tillabhatt advised him not to investigate about that. Samudragupta has two sons. Ramagupta and Chandragupta. Chandragupta was kept away from the palace for 25 years and when he returned strange things started to happen.
Nice plot. Very interesting story. Nice suspense and well written. It grabs your attention till the end. I felt like watching suspense movie. Incredible tale of politics and Karma. Must read !! Can’t wait to read other books from the same author as well as publisher!! Indeed loved it !!
Yoddha: The Dynasty Of Samudragupta is a historical fiction set in the Golden Era of Indian history. It is the story of king Samudragupta and his two sons Ramagupta and Chandragupta. It is the story of treachery, violence, love, deception, betrayal, and war. Author Rajat Pillai has woven a fascinating tale and I enjoyed reading it. Samudragupta, king of Rajagriha sent away both of his sons when they were very little and raise them separately without anyone knowing their whereabouts for their own safety. He was not safe in his own castle. When his Elder son Ramagupta comes of age he introduces him his younger brother Chandragupta to the public and both brothers started helping their father in running the kingdom. Ramagupta marries Agnieshka, daughter of Tilabhatta (Commander in chief of Rajagriha’s army) and Chandragupta is engaged to his other daughter but everything in the castle was not as normal as it seemed. There was an assassin imposing as a soldier in their army whose sole purpose was the death of Samudragupta and after several attempts on king’s life, he finally manages to land a fatal blow on king which leaves him very weak and unable to take care of his kingdom. He appoints Ramagupta as acting king and was waiting for his recovery when his younger son fell down from stairs and loses his mind and is sent to a mental asylum. Was Chandragupta really mad or was he also a victim of another conspiracy like his father? What happens to Samudragupta? How well did Ramagupta fulfill his duties as an acting king? The narration was good and captivating. The writing style of the author is simple yet gripping which did not allow me to put the book down before finishing. The cover was okay but I did not like the color schemes and it could have been better. The plot was mind-blowing as the twists and turns and suspense was well maintained throughout the book.
'True love never had a purpose, nor does it require acknowledgement." - Rajat Pillai, Yoddha: The Dynasty of Samudragupta
Yoddha: The Dynasty of Samudragupta by Rajat Pillai is the story of a time when Samudragupta, the son of Chandragupta I ruled the Gupta Kingdom. The poor king, who is supposed to lead two (or rather, three lives) in order to maintain his kingdom and keep his sons safe.
The story begins at a time when the Gupta empire is at its peak and Samrat Samudragupta one of the leading ruling emperors. Because he takes such good care for his subjects and remembers about their welfare all the time, the people love him. Everyone loves him, but still... In the making of such a large empire, Samudragupta has made many enemies on his way. Could one of them come back to haunt his children when he is just retiring from his throne? What will happen when history repeats itself in the form of his sons? What will happen when the Gupta empire is broken from within? Will it emerge, once again, as the mighty empire that the people are used to seeing or will it be destroyed, leaving in its wake an empire that can neither be resurrected nor be saved?
Well, you need to pick up the book to know a lot of these answers, just the way I needed to!
The reason I picked up this book is because it is based on our land's history—a history not many are acquainted with. The history of the Gupta dynasty, but of a time when Chandragupta I had long deceased and only his son, Samudragupta remained. I particularly like historical ficitons, so this story was definitely meant to be a hit for me. In a way, it was; in a way, it wasn't.
What I loved about the book was the definite story-line. The author has taken the history of the Gupta dynasty and weaved a pretty nice story around it. The plot is captivating and most of the time, it encourages the reader to continue reading even when he/she wants to quit. (I know it did that with me!)
The author has a smooth writing style. What I think it lacked in was the dialogues. The dialogues between many of the characters were talking about things in a way that people wouldn't normally say. I mean, sure the idea is to get the read understand the exact scenario that is going on but there is still no point in saying somethings that one can explain through other ways. This resulted in a lot more of telling than showing.
Another thing that bothered me a lot was the sudden change in the point-of-views of the characters. I like my characters thinking from one mind at a time!
Yet, I found the plot enchanting (like I already mentioned). Most of the characters were pretty strongly developed and the book included a two to three strong female characters as well, especially Madhavasena who was one of my favorite characters throughout the story because of her strong-willed decisions as well as her human rationality. Honestly, she appeared more human to me than any other character.
I also particularly liked Chandragupta and Dhruvadevi's love story, although it disheartened me to see how he barely had any love for Madhavasena—the woman who loved him so selflessly. But well, we cannot do anything about his feelings.
In a nutshell, the book was a pretty good read and had it not been for the presence of the two things I dislike a lot in narratives, I would have given it a whole five star. Of course, that was merely my point of view. It is possible you love the book more (many readers have done so so far)! So really, if you like the plot, then do give it a try. There is a very high possibility that you won't be disappointed.

Yoddha: The Dynasty of Samudragupta unfolds the murky loves and lies of one of the most illustrious clans in history. • Book review:- This is the first book I have tried by the author and it impressed me. The story goes on very smoothly and gives you perfect vibes of Indian culture. The Tiltle and cover are not Impressive but all the quotes and plot are with zero grammatical or spelling error. The story will totally blow your mind! The mid twist will totally impress you. Don't judge the book by title or the cover as they stand nowhere in comparison to the beauty of this book. I took 5 days to read t but it was worth it! Looking forward to read more books by the same author.

"Life is a circle where your Karma will come back and stare you in the eyes sometime in the future. It may take long but it will."
I have never been good in history or anything related to the time period of the kings, but I've always been curious to know more about the lives of the kings who once ruled our nation and reading historical fiction is an adventurous way to discover different aspects and sights on these great rulers. This book shows how hard a King's life could lead, the decision a King has to make between the life he was given and the life he was destined for. While ruling a nation and people can never be easy; and for a single person to carry it makes it even more impossible when the lives of your dear ones are in danger because of the throne. The story leads through the time of Emperor Samudragupta's reign and about how Chandragupta Vikramaditya, the greatest emperor of Gupta dynasty in history, came to the throne following some unfortunate events that'd make the once unknown village prince to the time's greatest King. While the enemies hungry for the power and the throne are plotting to destroy the peace of the palace what happens when Chandra realizes that the true enemy isn't what lurks in the distant, but the one who's been there all along in sheep's clothing waiting for the moment to pounce at his weakest.
My Thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the plot of this book. The cover and the title of this book was what that first pulled in and after reading the blurb I was sure I'd enjoy it. I had a brief knowledge on the Gupta period before and about the great king Chandragupta Vikramaditya but reading through the journey of his life and becoming a king and mostly the history of Samrat Samudragupta, his father and the decision he had to make for the betterment of the nation was enthralling. I loved the characters and their different perspectives. The persona of Samudragupta was so descriptive and well versed, you can't stop but admire him and the character building was commendable but became gradually dull in the middle. However, it quickly changed its pace and came back on track around the ending and I couldn't read fast enough to the end, it was all so well represented.
The story starts with the victory speech of Samudragupta appreciating and encouraging his soldiers after winning the battle against the foreign territories of Sakas and Kushanas. The King, however due to his ageing senses and overcome by joy and love for his motherland, Aryabhatta, hadn't noticed the evil prowling on him. And as the enemies start to get closer and closer to their goal, an unexpected revelation resurfaces about the Old King's life and all the secrets he has kept in order to save his lineage. Chandragupta, a brave yet admiringly smart young villager, finds out the truth about his identity as the young prince and the son of Samudragupta who had been claimed to be dead years ago and the uncle who visits him is none other than his own father. Feeling betrayed and hurt, he enters the palace unknown of the royal enemies and is reunited with his older brother Ramagupta. Chandra is the quick-witted prince and for his morals is easily accepted and admired by the people and followers.
"The worst thing one can do the ourselves is to let other people evaluate one's capability. Every person is special; it is the opinion of others that makes them mediocre."
The real storyline is revolves around the arrival of a new threat to the palace and to the old King's life where the palace is full of hungry sharks and traitors plotting mind games and conspiracies from inside. While both brothers start to learn the reality and the fear of being a royal, a series of unfortunate organised events impels Chandra out of his senses and suddenly his whole existence is in question crowding his judgement and the realizing that he couldn't trust anyone in the palace after all and the people around him to be deceitful. Will Chandra give up on everything, much to his enemies' hopes or will he rise, marking the golden period in history and defeating the enemies whom he once called his own realizing what the need of power can really make a man do?
"Power is never given or bestowed upon. It is always acquired."
Final Verdict and Ratings: Finally, I want to thank the author for providing me with a copy, cause I really enjoyed reading this book. It was my first time reading a historical fiction based on the Gupta period and I have to say I'm so impressed by the author's writing styles and objectives. And so I'm giving this book an amazed 4⭐ for the remarkable work of the author and I'll definitely recommend this book if you want an interesting ride to the history and experience the new aspects of it.
[Thanks so much to the author for providing me with the book in exchange of an honest review]
All I would say is that the book has been superbly written.
After such a long time, I got to read such a good work regarding Indian history in a very adventurous manner.
The story starts with the victory of battles headed by King Samudragupta.
In one of the contests held in the kingdom, turns up Chandragupta who brings up the many chaos as well as strengthening up the competition of the throne.
The strong King Samudragupta has left many enemies lurking around, yet the long lost son surfaces and make things right. Friends seem like foe and foes seem to be friends. But does the true successor have what it takes to fight it all?
The characters are really strong. The plot is thick. The adventure starts right away from the first page itself👍 I specifically want to mention the character Vyom (the most engaging character in the book). His character build up is amazing👍 However, Chandragupta steals the show with his strong nature facing the inevitable truth and secrets that start surfacing as he realises his own identity.
The story telling is superb. The way the book has been written is like we are watching the characters and the battles in real. It is so surreal. The horses, the poison used, suicides, the sacred mask handed over to the rightful heir, the children with all their innocence : these moments really moved me. I love the way history in history itself opening up in the story.
The tender love scenes, the different intelligent spies involved, the court room discussions, the decisions taken, the stories of the past that has been dug up due to circumstances : everything has an importance in the story. And nothing in this book can be neglected. The main plot is the planned assassination of the king. But is the assassin a real enemy or the one the king trust the most? The love story between Chandragupta and Charulata is so endearing, heartbreaking yet sweet.
Ultimately it turns out as a war between families, killings and misunderstandings unbound with the enemies lurking just behind their backs. The most emotional parts were the ones where King Samudragupta spoke/written to Chandragupta. So many things can be learned from this book. Human nature at its best and worst forms can be seen depicted incredibly well.
Eventually the good triumphs the evil.
Overall, this was a very well thought, well researched book. Kudos to the author!
It is AD 379, Samudragupta is the king of Magadha. His army has just won a war against the Sakas and Kushanas. The king feels tired and dejected even though victory has been his. Harishena and Tilabhatt are his trusted advisors. An amber eyed stranger follows the king he has plans to assassinate Samudragupta. Inspite of the advice from his counselors, the king leaves for Prayag dressed as a commoner. In the village of Varunapura we meet Priyamvadha and her son Chandragupta.Chandra knows Samudragupta as his uncle , not as the king or as his father. The story takes us through the events that happened between the war and the Golden Age of the India under the Gupta Empire.
Why is Chandragupta living in a village?
Who wants to kill the King?
Will the Assassin be successful?
Read to find out.
I have always been a bad history student so I confused with the Chandragupta in the story with Chanakya’s Chandragupta. Finally Wikipedia told me that they belong to two different dynasties. This story is about the Gupta Dynasty, I do remember studying about the Golden age during the Gupta rule and of Samudragupta but don’t remember reading about his son , Chandragupta. I found the starting a bit slow, mostly because I wasn’t familiar with the names and was confused as mentioned above, but later the book became fast paced and interesting. I love thrillers so I enjoyed the thriller set in a historical environment. As i didn’t know the original story , I loved the edge of the seat suspense. The story talks about politics and the things people do for power. My favorite character was Madhavasena, Chandragupta’s childhood friend.
We all have heard about the Gupta dynasty and King Chandragupta especially and we had been in that era’s glory and beauty. All of us have loved the history so powerful and moreover set in our own land. This book is the history of the Gupta dynasty after Chandragupta in the hands of his only son, Samudragupta.
Samudragupta, being a kind and powerful king, had been into welfares and better of his people and kingdom. He was one of those selfless kings who gave priority to the kingdom. Everybody loved him for what he was. But the greed to steal that luxury and power has never gone in the drain. No matter how good a leader is, there will be people, always eyeing on the throne. So was the matter here. Samudragupta was not prone to these greedy foxes. Will the king retain or retire? What will happen to his enemies? How will he deal with everything and still do well for the kingdom?
The story moves forward and answers all the questions that appear in the reader’s mind. It is not only the war and power that the book talks about but there is the essence of love, loyalty, hardships. There are strong female characters with great roles to play on.
The book is written with a smooth yet fast-paced style keeping you hooked to find out “what happens next”. The narration keeps jumping here and there unexpectedly but you don’t really lose the track anytime.
Overall, it’s a good book with a strong story woven around the deeply analyzed and explored the history of the Gupta dynasty. If you’re a history or a mythology bud, this book is for you.
THE GUPTA DYNASTY IS STEPPING INTO ITS GOLDEN AGE BUT THE PAST HOLDS MANY DARK SECRETS...
History is the one thing that I find boring and I used to hate history in my school days but this book i.e. YODDHA by Rajat Pillai was very interesting I was gluex into the book. It's a Historical Fiction and I love it.
It is a story of Samudragupta who lives 2 lifes he is king for everyone but a comman man to his sons they don't know about their and Samudragupta's real identity. Things started changing when Ramagupta and Chandragupta came into the palace. Slowly Chandragupta becomes insane. What had happen to him? How everything changes for him? Is there someone who is responsible for Chandragupta's illness? What will happen to Samudragupta? To know more pick up the book and start reading.
The Cover and Title are good. Narration was flawless, editing was very well done one cannot find any mistake or error. Language was good.
Plot was slow and confusing at starting but slowly thing were getting clear and story was becoming interesting to read. I was curious to know what is going to happen, it was a page turner. There was mystery, thrill, suspense, dark secrets, love etc. In the book along with history.
Its is a nice read. I will recommend everyone to read this book.
In contrast to my expectation, Yoddha turned out less about Samundragupta whose power was in declining stage and more about the rise of Chandragupta.
So the author found his story in the last reigning years of Samundragupta's rule which was further spiced up by the repeated assassination attempts on Samundragupta's life and unstable mental health of young prince Chandragupta.
Despite of all the spices, the first half was comparatively less gripping than the latter half. I think, the not so formidable assassinator really took away the thrill factor from the storyline.
The story bounces back again in second half thanks to some real good depicted escape and rescue scenes. Also Madhavasena, the best friend of Chandragupta, springs into action which puts unprecedented energy into the plot. It was fun to read from there on.
But plaintive and convenient manner of secret and suspense revelation, again takes beating on sensation factor.
Overall it was a decent read. The plot was well thought out, but a good gripping narration would have made it a great read.
There are a few things for me that make the book worth every penny and then more than that: First, Authors narration style, it’s a story and the amount of research he has put in while the book, and it’s cover. And Rajat Pillai’s Yoddha: The Dynasty of Samudragupta is one such book that has all the above-mentioned qualities.
Yoddha: The Dynasty of Samudragupta has many shades that are woven smoothly into the story. The book is Thriller and Historical fiction, set in the AD 379. Though the story dragged in some places, it managed to keep in its hold until the end.
Author has done an excellent job crafting so many characters and each different from the other. Though the onslaught of so many characters became a task for me to remember.
If you love Historical fiction then I highly recommend it… This is a 3 star read for me
Initially The Book Seems Like an Old Fictional Version Of History But Because of Some Sensual & Horror Episodes It Keeps You Engaged But after That The Story Takes Miraculous Twist & Turns Which Makes You Fell In Love. Overall It's a Masterpiece Having Everything, From Suspense To Sensuality, Everything That Can Please A Reader. Also The Characters are Very Humane , They Aren't Like Godly Beings Who Can't Do anything Wrong. Every Character Excluding Madhavsena & Chandra Have Grey Shades. Also Few Assistant Like Harishena Are Also White. Overall It's a Great Enjoyable & Engaging Book. Everyone Should Read It At least Once.
A well fictionalized plot about Samudragupta and his dynasty. With the incredible plot, the twists and turn are well done. The plot is well paced. Characters are built aptly. The bravery of the clan is depicted with great importance. A well built dystopion fiction story reflecting the history of the Samudragupta dysnasty. By reading the narration I can definately tell that the research is done outstandingly.
After a long time I read a book from Historical genre and I must say that I loved the book. From the beginning the book seems interesting. The author narrated the whole story so beautifully that makes the.readers engaged. From beginning the readers can feel the action. The strong characterization made this book more engaging. The language is perfect. The cover is eyecatching. A highly recommend book.
One of the more passable historical fiction tales.
There's not enough time and thought spent to build the character.
The premise and the thought is great but what makes these underdog victory stories memorable is the way the protagonist's character is built , but here he just turns from a caged cat to a growling tiger without premise.
Very disappointed with the book. The character of Samudragupta and Chandragupta Vikramaditya reduced to carricature. A few hindi books do more justice to the same subject matter. Reader does not connect with the subject.

REVIEW
Reading it for around a week, I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I can’t start praising the Author for his amazing work on this book. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning. The narration builds the correct amount of thrill and inquisitiveness in the reading experience, the elements of romance also break the monotony of reading about the incidents of the kingdom. The character build up just adds an extra dimension in picturising the story. What I appreciate the most is the unpredictable nature of the plot. Even though the narration is easy to understand and gripping, it never lets you know what can happen on the next page. The randomness of the scenes makes the book stand out from a lot of historical fictions I have read as of now. And how can I not mention the richness of the plot?-when Chandragupta goes Insane. It is so beautifully described, I literally got goosebumps while reading those horrifying scenes. I, however, felt dragged when I reached the end of the book. I feel the book would have turned even better if the narration towards the end of the book wasn’t stretched. But, this little thing stays unnoticed when you read such a great book.
I can’t wait to read more from the Author! This is a highly recommended read.

IF I COULD REVIEW IT IN A SINGLE LINE:
Historical fiction worth the hype
THE REVIEW:The history, story and past of the emperor Samudragupta who's son was kept away for 25 years only to return with a vengeance greater than the empire. The past which only a few of us know and even fewer are right about. His sons Ramagupta and Chandragupta playing an important aspect in the Liege Lord's life.
With the death of the Majesty, the son Ramagupta who was in the kingdom from childhood and the wronged Chandragupta pledge their allegiance to the kingdom, but rather than staying together for the welfare end of destroying the very existence of the family. Was the King of Maghdha the rightful heir or was the destruction beyond grief worth the tone that it took?
For strong willed characters to a one that got away lovestory angle this book has everything written in a crisp yet not to be crumpled on wording and yet better presentation and flow that has the reader hooked for more. With appropriate use of adjectives and verbs and a even better form fitting story this book is a historical fiction worth reading.
Historical fiction has never been a favorite genre of mine for the reason that it is difficult to grasp and boring in the vernacular so going into the read I wasn't hoping anything really but the author has raised the bar so high with this it is going to be difficult for other authors to compete with this level of writing.
Looking forward to other novels of his.

Disclaimer: I was sent this book by the author for an honest review. The review is absolutely my own and hasn’t been influenced by anyone.
When facing a adversary who is more powerful than you, one should not allow the enemy to be prepared, one must srtike at the place where it brings down the enemy’s morale the most and must use tactics which surprise him.’
Being a history lover, I was really excited to read this book. I love reading historical fictions, as it delights me in an unusual way, from the point of view of the author. Read my full review to know about this book…..
Yoddha the dynasty of Samudragupta is set during the Gupta Empire and revolves primarily around the King of Magadh Samrat Samudragupta and his two sons Ramagupta and Chandragupta.
Samrat Samudragupta as he was lovingly called by his people, the most powerful man in the whole of Aryavrat, was winning all battles in battlefield, but battles of life worries him all times. The beloved king has kept big secrets, really big… and what will happen when they are brought in front of everyone? That you will know only after reading this book.
Samdragupta kept is sons away from him, to protect them from his enemies. Years after when they came back to their kingdom, ofcourse after lots of twists, Samudragupta finally felt happiness for his complete family, but with a fear always lingering in is heart of history to repeat itself and history did repeated itself and his happiness didn’t last forever.
While Samudragupta along with his sons was planning to destroy his enemies and protect their kingdom, enemies from past were at his palace to destroy him. His enemies continouslly tried to kill him but his fate saved him, but not for long.
When all this and lots more planning was happening in palace against Chandra, he was busy in his love story with Dhruvadevi, to be kanyadevi of the palace. His dearones were against him, to subside him from their path. Will he manage to escape from all this?
This book is full of suspense, and will keep you hooked, and you must read it to know how, what and when happened with whom.
Author wrote this story with all historical characters and many events with a twist of his own imagination, which came out really well. It has all factors of a historical fiction, War; Politics; Romance; Drama; Revenge; Secrets; Ambitions; Enemity; Plannings and Plotting, and all you can think about. What I liked most is Characterization, author gave a good detailing about every Character and did justice to all characters.
I really enjoyed this book but it failed to left a mark on me. I felt lack of strong impression at many places specially at those high points. And i found it’s ending really fast, it could have been more detailed like the rest of the book, and thus would be more satisfying .
Else it’s a good read and history lovers should definitely pick this book.
"The thing that most attracts me to a historical fiction is taking the factual records as far as it is known, using that as scaffolding, and then letting imagination build the structure that fills in those things we can never find out for sure." - Geraldine Brooks

We all know that Historical Fiction is the most difficult genre to write on. As mentioned in the above quote, scaffolding the actual facts and feeling the voids with imagination is quite a difficult job.
What I loved the most about this book is all the facts written are true. The author didn't sugar-coat any real character and wrote the exact things that happened in the history. And the imagination which filled the in-betweens was really heart warming and heart wrenching at the same time.
I'm glad that the author did a brilliant job in juxtaposing facts with imagination. To be very honest, I didn't have much expectations with this book as I have previously read many historical fictions in an aweful manner. But after starting this book, my notion started changing. The writing is so lucid, that I could even imagine myself in the scenes happening in the book.
All the characters and their backstories are built with perfection. We all read about Samrat Samudragupta, Chandragupta in school. But reading them as characters of a book is truly a bliss. Their love, hatred, feeling of betrayal, helplessness, anger, killing spree each and everything is described with equal precision and I felt the same way as the characters felt throughout.
The book also has a lightning pace which justified the storyline. The storyline never turned melodramatic or over the top for a single time. It felt absolutely real and raw.
I'm keeping a very high hope for the author's upcoming books. Thankyou so much @pillairajat for the review copy.
This book is a retelling of an episode from the Gupta reign which is known as the Golden era of Indian history. The entire novel is weaved intricately in such a gripping manner. And that it grabs the reader’s attention- a total page-turner is how I would describe it.
I am not a fan of historical fiction, but I enjoyed this book and felt glued to it till the last page. The author ‘Rajat Pillai’ has done a fabulous job with the characters and storyline.
The language is simple yet proficient in places that dim fit. All the words and dialogues are so apt as if they were the exact words said. The author has flawlessly achieved the flow, structure, and depth that he envisioned.
Most historical fiction is a retelling that lacks a sense of surprise and mystery. But this book has been written and executed in such a manner. That it pays justice to the historical events that took place at the same time builds a sense of curiosity. And a mystery to every chapter with unique, well-developed characters like ‘Vyom’ and ‘Jaidev’.
Vyom actually was a witty character that I enjoyed. And wished to read more about his different nature and behavior. As usual, I am a sucker for romance and indeed rooted for Chandra and Dhruvadevi. At the same time feeling emphatic towards Mhadavasena. Also, I felt extremely sad for Chandra’s foster mother for how things turned out for her.
The author has brought various deeming societal issues to light throughout the novel. Of the likes domestics violence, infidelity, and abandonment of children. This book also conveys strong lessons of how greed can turn you against your own blood. And how karma comes biting you back. And varied more that showed how loyalty towards loved ones is prime regardless of the consequences.
One of the quotes that is stuck in my mind is “The first half of my life was spent grabbing things and in the second half I am learning the art of letting go.”
And finally, I am motivated and intrigued to read more historical fiction that is realistic as this book. I recommend this book for young readers, historical fiction lovers. And to Indian history enthusiasts to read. To enjoy this gripping retelling and insight into the dynasty of Samudragupta.

MY REVIEW:- ⚒The book cover is veiling out beauty of imperialism. ⚒This books lift my intrest toward mythological fiction into another level. ⚒Storyline :- This book talks about great gupta ruler Samudragupta, and some of his hidden secrets. First chapter describes well about terrific war organization. Second chapter introduces the reader about his Secret double life, in Varunapura village. A bullock race called Rekala had been arranged in the village by village council. There 3 new characters were displayed - Madhavasena, Chandra and Priyamvada. Ramagupta ( elder son of Samudragupta)marries Agnieshka, daughter of Tilabhatta (Commander in chief of Rajagriha’s army) and Chandragupta is engaged to his other daughter. Behind the scenes Samudragupta's enemies were planning to kill him. ⚒Even though lot of characters were there but it never let the reader feel messy, rather it was gripping and connecting. ⚒Language is kept as simple as it can. ⚒ The author might have done a fine research to present the plot magnificently. ⚒Its gives me film like experience. ⚒Highly recommended book Rating:- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
India is one of the oldest civilisation in the world and the Guptas were the most important dynasty of Indian history. The Gupta period has been described as the Golden Age of Indian history. The first famous king of Gupta dynasty was Chandragupta 1 who was succeeded by Samudragupta. "Yoddha: The Dynasty of Samudragupta" aspires to retell the sophisticated event of Gupta period in an interesting and pragmatic manner.
Samrat Samudragupta was a great military genius and above that, he was a person with a golden heart for whom his kingdom and subjects come first. Samudragupta had two sons - Ramagupta and Chandragupta but to protect his sons from adversaries he kept them away from the kingdom and royal life. The elder son, Ramagupta, was sent to a military cantonment while the younger son, Chandragupta, was given to one of his loyal to be brought up as a villager. But after 25 years the truth is unveiled and both the sons get what was their. But does the story ends here? Who will succeed Samrat Samudragupta? Read the books to find more.
The story is captivating. It always felt good to read about Indian history that too in fiction form. The author has given importance even to the minor details which are proof of the hard work and in-depth research done by the author.
The book is written in an easy language, all the characters are well elucidated even the narration is impressive but I found the book a little bit dragged at some points.
The detailed description of each and every scene is what I liked the most.
The book is surely a page-turner, full of suspense where you are bound to ask questions before turning the page.
But the title and the cover both disappointed me and I think more could have been done with them.
Overall it was an amazing experience to know about the Gupta dynasty.
Here I call all the history lovers to read and adore this beauty.
One of the good fictional books I've read. First few chapters were very slow and sometimes it made me cofnused. Because I know the story of chandra gupta and Magadha dynasty.

The next chapter Vyom, who is a stranger came to Rajgirha. Later with some helping hand he got a job in Rajgirha. He entered when rituals were goiing on there.
Another side Priyamvada faced her death. So she told all the truth to his son Chandra. Chandra was very shocked after hearing the truth.
He went to Rajgirha to ask the truth to King Samudra gupta. Chandra made Samudra gupta angry and he wanted to speak the truth infront of everyone.
Samudra gupta, in anger, told everyone that Chandra is his son. Chandra was asked why he hide everything from everyone. Everyone was in a confused state.
Now what will happen next ?? samudra gupta was also facing the death. At that time he oredered Ramagupt to take care of the Rajgirha and people and Younger son Chandra gupta will take care of the army. Samudra was in dead bed and someone mixed poision in his meals. But Pradnya's ate it and the next instant she found death.

Chandragupta Vikramaditya of the Gupta dynasty of course is one of the greatest kings in Indian history. The story begins showing Samudragupta, Chandragupta’s father at the peak of power and slowly beginning to show the signs of old age. Chandragupta has been raised in a village by a foster mother and does not know who Samurdragupta really is. He only knows Samudragupta as a benevolent relative who visits him and his mother from time to time. It is only when his foster mother is on her deathbed that Chandragupta comes to know that he is actually Samudragupta’s son and a prince of Magadha. Chandragupta arrives in the capital, meets his father and assumes his rightful place as a member of the royal family. He is soon engaged twice, once as a political match and once out of love. He is also reunited with his brother Ramagupta. Life in the royal palace is not what it appears to be as there is a deadly assassin on the loose as well as numerous conspiracies and rivalries afoot. Chandragupta finds himself in an asylum weak and in ill health, branded mentally unstable after a series of events. Will Chandragupta be able to get himself out of this mess and will he stake a claim on the throne of Magadha? Will the assassin be caught? Who has hired the assassin? Who is the mysterious prisoner who is being held in the dungeons of the palace? The reader will have to read the story to find out. It will remain to be seen whether the author will take the story forward in a sequel. I highly recommend “Yoddha”, as an extremely interesting story that will leave the reader hooked to the very end!
