Music educators are in a prime position to help students become socially and emotionally competent while at the same time develop excellent musicianship. For every child to be successful in the music classroom, teachers need to be aware of the whole student. How do music educators create success when students every day struggle with social awareness, bullying, communication, problem solving, and other challenges? This pioneering book by Scott Edgar addresses how music educators can utilize Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to maximize learning in the choral, instrumental, and general music classroom at all levels, and at the same time support a student s social and emotional growth.
Definitely a must-read for any music teacher either wanting to gain further knowledge on SEL, or even someone completely new to SEL strategies. This book provides great tools and resources for music teachers wanting to increase their students' emotional output and social skills.
Really enjoyed this book! I love any topic of SEL because children learning to understand and manage their emotions is so important to their development.
I will say it felt very relevant to HS and MS band programs, and secondary general music (and a little choir as well) and not so much for elementary general music. Although, if you keep an open mind you will still find ways to apply these topics and suggested activities to your classroom! If you do the discussion questions you force yourself to think of ways to apply these methods and techniques to your class, so keep an open mind about it!
This book provides many examples of lessons and activities to help reinforce the SEL competencies. However, it is designed for secondary music educators and not as applicable for elementary general music teachers.
