Joni and Friends is an organization that accelerates Christian outreach in the disability community. Founded in 1979, their mission is to communicate the gospel and equip Christ-honoring churches worldwide to evangelize and disciple people affected by disability. The organization authors numerous books including titles such as the Beyond Suffering Bible, Real Families, Real Needs, and a series of church resources entitled The Irresistible Church.
I’ve been a long- time supporter of Joni and Friends and her commitment to advancing disability ministry around the world. This amazing woman became a quadriplegic when she broke her neck after a diving accident fifty years ago. She was seventeen at that time. Joni is known especially for her Wheels for the World program that supplies reconditioned wheelchairs wherever they are needed. But that’s only one of her helpful ministries. She is also a writer and “mouth” artist. This latest release combines these talents in an over-sized book that helps readers understand something important. Simply stated it is this: The sufferings scratching at our doors are the very windows through which God wants to shine his brightest ways of hope.” I am not handicapped, nor am I dealing with any major struggles. Yet, this book so captivated me that I sat down last night to begin it…and I did not stop till the very end (much later than my normal bedtime!) The truths in this book will help that person who has given up on life no matter the reason. In addition to the encouragement in each of the four divisions of the book, there are “Prayer Starters” to help a novice begin praying, followed by a space to continue the prayer.
